The Fujifilm X-T100 - The Best Kept Secret in Fujifilm X Cameras?

  • With its Fujifilm colour science and fantastic JPEG film simulations, the Fujifilm X-T100 can make some extraordinary images, and at 24 megapixels they're high resolution too!
Its price of about £200 makes it quite a contender in the used mirrorless market. Whether you're looking for your looking for your first mirrorless camera, or you're a more experienced photographer, this camera could make a lot of sense.
But how does it compare against its better known rivals, the X-T10, and the X-T1? And how does its conventional Bayer sensor compare to their renowned X-Trans sensors?
Will it stand proud, or fall flat on its face?

You could customize the left wheel to change the ISO instead of the film simulations. I use it this way and find it convenient.

Great in-depth review here of the pros and cons. I have an X-T100 and have had it since it came out all those years ago. On my travels it has been dropped countless times (I am clumsy) on tarmac, tile, concrete and still works perfectly. Let's just say the scratches and dings added when I've dropped the camera while getting in and out of Jeeps, or knocking it on rocks while hiking, or falling over while chasing after a cab in a dark street of a tropical island are "characterful". The LCD still works. In addition to the decent build quality, the viewfinder is literally the one in the X-T20, so comments by one person in the audience about it being a "toy" are ludicrous. It's not an X-T4 or X-Pro but that doesn't mean it's rubbish either.

    • @zenography7923

'Toy' is not accurate at all - this is a very nice mirrorless camera. Sounds like yours has plenty of patina too!

This is the first serious digital camera that I bought. Yes, sometimes is really slow but it doesn't matter, I've leaned to take the best I could from it. The customization isn't great but I could manage to have the Iso on the left knob and the type of light measurement on the only customizable button. I love the fact that is so small so I can take with me also a film camera without problems.

I love the zero-grip clean classic body shape, and it can print directly onto an Instax printer. With a speed booster it is quite decent for classic manual focus AI, FD, MD, OM and other lenses.

Of all Fuji cameras, I like the X-10, X-100 compact series the most.

26:21 What is even better is that the X-T100 is the only camera that has two hinged screen: it tilts and flips - better than any other cameras. I love the zero-grip clean classic body shape, and it can print directly onto an Instax printer. With a speed booster it is quite decent for classic manual focus AI, FD, MD, OM and other lenses. If only, the X-T200 had kept the minimalist, no-grip body shape and the two-hinge design with the 3.5" screen, in this case X-T200 could be the best camera for classic camera design lovers.

Slight correction, sir. ISO can be assigned to the top left control dial in settings. It then functions as an ISO dial in all but special modes (adv. filter, auto, etc.). You're then left with the rear wheel dial to use as either aperture or shutter adjustment, depending on what priority mode you're in. Cheers for the video.

Interesting to hear your thoughts on the X-T100, Nigel.
I bought, for my wife, the X-A5 with the same sensor as your T100. I can definitely see the difference between the X-Trans range and the Beyer sensors, IMO there is no better sensor than the X-Trans III, couple that with the X-E3 body and you have the best of all worlds, great sensor, compact and unobtrusive body, with the controls back on dials (except of course the ISO, which I designate the front control wheel to ISO on my E3).
My experience of video using the X-A5 is limited, but I don't think that that is what these cameras are for, quite frankly. There are much better cameras for video work, and at times I wish that Fuji had just omitted video entirely from the consumer range of cameras. Still, for the market it is aimed at 1080p 60 fps is more than adequate, if you want top quality 4k you wouldn't be shooting a consumer camera anyway, you'd be going for a top end Black Magic or similar.
Great video, though, and please, give the little X-T100 time to worm its way into your affections, I'm sure that you'll come to appreciate it.
    George

It's a nice little camera for sure, and I think anyone who comes to it from an entry level camera from another manufacturer might well be pleasantly surprised - I'm sure I would be! But its images aren't quite as nice as those from x-trans sensors which, I think, have spoiled me a bit!

I have the top little fn button for changing iso. To me this is a great camera and I mostly shoot and focus manually. I never use the flipscreen and I use a kiwi eye viewfinder thing in my hotshoe. I also bought myself an L plate to have a good grip. As for using in m mode , you use the little wheel to change aperture and the round dial on the top right to change shutterspeed. Okay it does not have the xtrans sensor but the images it takes are great imo. With the xc35mmf2 it works very fast in terms of focus and I recommend using a SanDisk extreme pro 64gb sdcard. That gives a very fast writing reading speed. Peaking depends on the lenses attached to the camera. I never use the lcd screen , always the viewfinder, with the kiwi eye viewfinder to have the best view, even with glasses on. For focusing I always use the peaking in combination with the focuszoom to nail the focus.

Nice how mother nature left a random but very fitting Hipster-Filter on the last minutes of your video, that's how we did it before Instagram and Hipstamatic! :)
As for the X-T100, I really like the body, I find it's design and proportions much more pleasing and old-school than the X-T10/20 body style... it's just that the one reason I bought into the Fuji system is really the dedicated dials and I just don't enjoy PASM-cameras, otherwise this would be all I need.

I wonder if that rotating vertical "wheel" on the back can be pressed down to get a digital zoom on the back screen. The thing about exposure compensation dials on digital is you don't know if It's changing the gain on the sensor only, or speed of the exposure, or aperture. I believe It's just gain, really, but I don't like them on digital cameras that emulate the film experience because you're no longer specifically in control of those parameters. Always enjoy your relaxing uploads. The reel to reel was a nice throw back. I've owned a few.

    • @Domin0ss
      @Domin0ss 2 роки тому

yup, it does zoom if pressed. also the left top dial can set to change iso.
the exp comp dial changes shutter speed except shutter priority when it changes aperture (actually like in almost every other digital camera i ever had. never heard it has anything to do with gain tbh)

I could have biought this new for 179 EUR last November, but i didn't. Instead, i bought a new manual focus Lens. The good thing is for real it's looks, apperance. The bad thing is no lossless compressed RAW, and especially the small EVF, eyecup and magnification factor of this EVF. It does have a ordinary Bayer CFA, so no X-Trans Sensor. Some people are mean, trying to charge sometimes >300 EUR for just a entry level body.

Got this camera specially because I’m tired of the issues with x-trans sensors. But it’s so slow and annoying to use, and it lacks two card slots, so I don’t actually use it much. But in terms of sensor, I think it has a better sensor than the X-T2. It’s even better than the X-T200. That one gives shadow areas a green tint that is very ugly at high ISO.
Honestly I would love it if they stopped using x-trans. An X-T5 with a bayer sensor and the floppy screen of an X-T3 would be perfect! I mean that literally, for me that would be a perfect camera for me. Meaning the X-T2 and the X-T3 (which I use almost daily) are super close to being perfect. It’s just the sensor that holds it back a LITTLE bit.

This camera is nice step in to the Fuji system, although image quality and feature wise it is lacking behind of X-T and certainly X-pro line. Not to mention that using top line Fujifilm lenses will not get you there in IQ department due to a sensor (non) rendition. Xtrans sensor will always render colors from the Fujifiilm lenses better due to a wider green pixel bandwidth.

I bought one, used it sporadically for about two years, but now the LCD screen on the back no longer works. All repair costs for this camera are fixed and are about 300 Euro (no matter how small the problem). Great picture quality but the camera itself is a toy. Instead of a new screen, I would prefer to buy another X-T1. You're right, the film simulations of the X-T100 are more saturated or contrasty (even Provia). I do not agree with your positive stance on the viewfinder. It's a toy viewfinder.
