It's great seeing one Gary's videos again! This is a real neat idea, and we have everything except the cardboard to make it, but we have a huge roll of thick brown paper we could use. Thanks Gary, great timing again. I'm growing sweet potato slips for my favorite sweet potatoes (the light tan ones). I use steamed sweet potatoes instead of flour in my sweet potato waffle recipe. The light tan sweet potatoes are not always available and the deep orange/red sweet potatoes don't work for this recipe. Anyway, I've been trying to figure out where to plant all the slips I'm rooting. Now I know! Thanks again for the detailed instructions, so helpful.
Sounds great! Thanks Barbara. Over the years most of my sweet potato varieties got lost in the jungle. This year after the "snow event" I had a lot of clearing to do. I was able to find my lost favorite Okinawa purple. To me it tastes like biscotti. Now I'm setting them up so the won't get lost again.

I could see that working. The plastic would be thick enough to protect the cardboard and the cardboard would shield the plastic from UV rays. Thank you.

Thank you. I always say do what works best for you. I add to the top when the soil drops or when the tubers breach the surface to protect them from the sunlight.

Ooooo you could make this into a strawberry tower. You would need holes in the cardboard but it should be doable. I lost a lot of strawberries this past winter due to the cold I imagine, so I am thinking about order bare root strawberries. I will need to make something for them, since I already planted other things where the dead strawberries used to be. I think maybe a strawberry tower could work. I never could get the watering right on the strawberry pot I have.
I love your pots! I have tons of hardware cloth I haven't used. I had been thinking they would be a good side for some raised beds and here you are, showing me. My hardware cloth was bought to keep out squirrels, which as far as I can tell, no longer come steal my stuff, so I have unused rolls. I love using what I have and improvising what works.

To get cardboard, i once went yo Costco and pulled the large square pieces that they use between rows in their priducts. I was going to kill lawn eith them - like 6 ft by 6 ft or there about. They come in different thicknesses, and Cistco staff was happy to give them to me.

The only change I would make would be to either use a cotton duck painters drop cloth instead of the black plastic. Or put the black or clear plastic on the outside. My concern is the roots coming in contact with a non food grade plastic.
I really like the tower idea too. So inexpensive and easy to make.

Thanks Sue. With our low humidity an issue that I have is maintaining a consistent soil moisture level. I started with cardboard but the water was wicking out the side walls so I had to water more often. The plastic should solve that. If placed on the outside it would break down faster. I will be doing an update on the Guinea fowl, they have settled in and are doing well.

Goodness - another fantastic idea. Portable, adjustable - love it!!! ❤. Since I am in the Pacific Northwest with so much precipitation, I might be inclined to put the plastic on the outside. And cardboard or nothing on the inside if composting the cardboard while growing plants might cause a nutrient deficiency. In an effort to use what I already have at home, might try old tarps on the outside and cardboard inside. Thanks for the idea. With the fencing wire, there could be a whole number of fabrics or whatever to line The wire fencing.

Oh! And you can wrap those dog enclosure panels in that plastic stretch wrap they have for wrapping pallets? Narrow plastic wrap on a roll with a handle? And then you can zip tie them together and you have a little greenhouse! Or a big greenhouse, depending on how many panels you use...

Saw a video similar to your technique. They used chicken wire and layered straw then compost/soil then put the seed potatoes, then straw, compost/soil, seed potatoes all the way to the top. They just kept layering and planting. When the potatoes started vining, the vines grew through the chicken wire . Harvest time they just un hooked the wire and got the potatoes. Not sure what type of potatoes. And I think they only had to hill the top layer as they grew since they mainly kept the seed potatoes in all layers away from the edges to prevent sunlight from hitting them. It amazes me the way you and others think of these different ways to grow things. Thank you for sharing.

Awesome! I have the panels from several outdoor pet enclosures and have a couple of compost "baskets" made of 3 panels zip--tied together with cardboard around the inside for composting leaves, sticks and twigs that come down in the wind, year round. Have you tried potatoes in wood chips? Apparently they love just wood chips for some reason. I forget whose video that was...but thanks to you and Robbie both for sharing your makes - They're all brilliant and we really appreciate them!

These potatoes grow up, you need to plant the seed potatoes Four inches from the bottom
Sweet potatoes grow down so those are planted on the top of the Planter. Good luck
Thanks Jackie. I've tried many depths. I know a lot people "hill" them but most tubers form at the same level. Next time you grow some, as an experiment try planting a couple 4 to 6 inches from the surface. I add sifted woodchips or soil on top if the tubers start to breach the surface to prevent them going green from the sunlight.

You're welcome. I water when the soil is dry just below the surface. I didn't show it, but I cover the top with fine woodchips/mulch to help keep the soil moist. In my garden potatoes rarely flower which is when most sources recommend they're ready to harvest. I wait until the foliage dies back.

Thanks Peggy, you're welcome. I plant my potatoes 4 to 6 inches down. I don't mound or hill them as they grow, just cover any that breach the surface. Most of the tubers produced will be at the same level.

Most of my original garden is in dappled shade. In the past that's where I grew most of my potatoes. It worked well in that situation.
