- Watch as joe from 812 CATFISHING and myself catch some nice gizzard shad and prepare them for the freezer. I have had great success on frozen bait throughout the winter months for trophy blue catfish. But it all depends on how you prepare them before they go in the freezer. In this video we show you all you need to know. After you get them home remove the majority of the slime and vacuum seal them and they will be quality bait throughout the winter. I use the exact same technique on all types of bait fish. Thanks for watching.. feel free to ask any questions you may have. #catfishbait #shad #howtothrowacastnet

Thank you
You’re very Welcome, Thank you for sharing your videos with all of us 👍
Good info
Wow like this 👍 👍 👍 good job
Great video buddy thanks for sharing what name brand salt was that you used
Do you ever freeze blue Gill ? Lower Alabama we do not have skip jack and I don't think our gizzard shad gets that big.
I never have but I’m Sure it would work the same. Thanks for watching
Just stumbled upon this channel another badass catfisherman hell yeah!
Thank you for watching
how do you throw your net
Like a pro he has that technique down pat.
Video coming soon
How do you thaw out your frozen bait before using it?
Very slowly. I normally put it in cooler the night before. If I thaw it fast it seems to make it mushy. Hope this helps. Thanks for watching.
Glad your on the Ohio so hard to find videos on fishing the Ohio
This is the best fishing channel I've found yet. Keep up the good work!
What is your insight into catching shad on boat ramp? Does the water temp have to be elevated or certain times of the year. I been trying to catch them in mississippi but that water is barely 70 degrees and i'm about out from last years catch, thanks
Just go to backwaters I've never had luck netting them in the main river
Here in Mo. i like using Asian or Silver Carp for a cut bait for Channels and Blues, i let it go thru a stage of fermentation in the jars ,then freeze it, they eat it like candy, but i know i am fishin in colder water here in Mo.too, will try some fresh-frozen like yours, great info............
Nice video, really enjoyed...
Great Tips About Bait Thanks For Sharing 👍👍
Hey Brother, add some garlic and onion! Works great! Thanks for the awesome video! God Bless!🙏🇺🇸
Aaesome video
Tuesday cant wait
10 degrees???? I'll be sippin' coffee all day in a recliner.
great video... can you show the depth finder with image of shad before you throw the net, if you make another vid.....thanks
Ronald Brannan yes.one of my last few videos “winter blue cat tactics” shows that at the beginning if you want to check it out. Thanks for watching.
Beast with that net joe was not joking. I gotta get that trick down.yeah you should have used the tote or bucket lol good video
I buy chicken breast then salt it for later. I use a 7/0 circle hook and a #2 to catch bait fish. I caught a 38” striper on a 6” pike minnow. My river in Northern California doesn’t allow cast nets other rivers do, though. This year I’ll target shad when they’re running. I’ve even used frozen Tilapia from Walmart.
California gets more restrictive as the fishing gets worse. River flow is a big issue. Department of Water Resources is in the business of selling water to farmers at subsidized rates, while our river habitat declines.
The end of the video. I need that spot!
Great video!
If you haven’t, you should do a cast net video showing how you get a full spread with seemingly minimum effort.
Here’s a video of how I throw a 8’ and up net. Thank you
Way underestimated chAnnel
Thank you
@@hagengrubbsfishing I'm an idiot I meant Way underrated.., not underestimated
Great video, sometimes in the winter frozen is all I got.
Do yall have white bass or aka sand bass in big schools cause we do here in S.E. Texas and they destroy shad once they key in on your baits???
Willis Jones we have them but it doesn’t sound like we have as many as you all. Here in Kentucky it’s channel cats that destroy your bait.makes it hard to fish at times. Especially when using skipjack. Thanks for watching
That was a great video buddy , no wonder your growing so fast , I saw you on patriot James catfishing FB page . He's a friend of mine . That's really great info . But I did have a question what's your bribe mixture I mean how much ice to salt to water ratio
Thanks for the kind words. I’m a huge fan of your channel. Good stuff man. As far as the brine it really depends on what I’m trying to do. If I know It’s going to be a while before I can get them vacuum sealed and in the freezer I will just use a handful or 2 with 2 bags of ice. That way they don’t freeze and thaw out then refreeze and temperature will still be lower than just ice.But if I know I will be home before they have a chance to thaw I will salt pretty heavy with just enough water to get my bait down in the mixture with 2 bags of ice. I don’t measure it out exactly. I normally use a full box of the ice cream salt with 2 bags of ice and probably 2-3 gallon of water.. that will freeze them very quickly...I hope this makes some sense and I apologize for the book. Tight lines brother👍👍
@@hagengrubbsfishing it makes perfect sense, I'm like you I love fresh bait but that's not always possible , I'm not big on freezing bait but the things you said makes good sense, I've thought about freezing some blue gill , white perch or crappie for the winter when it's hard to catch bait . You think it would work as good if I vacuum sealed em fresh . I use frozen bait that ppl give me mostly skipjack, but I've never tried it on something like bluegill
Ol yeah by the way thank you for watching my channel too . I watch a lot of people but don't always have time too comment, but that was a really good tutorial on freezing bait . You explained everything very well . And when I say it was very good remember what I said I watch a lot of videos lol. Your doing good , never let UA-cam get you down you'll do good 1 Minn then bad . . But your doing good buddy
Fishin N Stuff I’ve never tried bluegill but I’m sure it would be fine. Catfish won’t eat my bluegill lol I can’t catch anything on them but seems everyone else does. Thanks man.
Thanks for all the tips Hagen, great video!!!
Great catch at the end!!
Glad to hear frozen works. I’ve got a bunch given to me by a company.👍🏼
Fantastic video man! Great info! Joe's awesome!!!
😁
What state are you in ?
Kentucky
Hagen Grubbs Fishing I am a 20 year guide and here in NC back to watts Barr there is a regional problem with the gizzard shad ,, only shad below four inches can be found for two years now , no one knows what is wrong but I suspect pollution from all the recent floods washing sewer from the cities in to the Catawba and Yadkin rivers. Glad to see y’all have some left.
What part of the world do you all live, you fishing the Tennessee?
Richard Laurent Ohio River in Kentucky
That's how it's done. Thanks
Excellent video!!!! I love a damn good bait catching video...with the 812 theme on a mission to put the big ones in the boat lol GREAT VIDEO
Great videos and great tips. I’ve been trying to do more catfish content so it isn’t all Bass. Trying to learn as I go
👍
Heck yeah Hagen that is some fine catfish candy for sure buddy. Joe is a good friend and hopefully you will be too. I will be seeing you again.
Good video, Hagen. I need to get better at throwing my net. I try to catch on to how you do it but I can't quite get it.
Video coming this week on how I throw a 10 foot net
Cool man.
Great video Hagan. My wife got me a vacuum sealer for Christmas and I’ve already used it a few times. I’ve never heard of using the rocksalt method to freeze them quickly... I will definitely be doing that. Thanks for the info✌🏻
Heck yeah had a blast man thx ! Great video man !
Cool. Channel, man. I just found it a couple days ago and subbed for sure. If you haven't already can you do a video on how to find shad?
I plan on doing one in the near future.thanks for watching
@@hagengrubbsfishing Thanks, man. The thing I really struggle with is seeing shad on my fish finder and then not knowing how to land on top of them.
Great video, everything was SPOT-ON!!! If you take care of your frozen bait, it will work just as well, in the Winter.
Some solid tips dude. Definitely saving this video for when I get to the area
Awsome video! Man that's a big net. We're only allowed 5' here. Those are some jumbo shad!
What's the name of Joe's channel?
812 CATFISHING. There’s a link in the description
Where do you get your 1" mesh nets from?
missile150 I order them on amazon. Thanks for watching
Dude kinda looks like joe exotic lol
I caught a 19lb flathead on the neuse river with a flash frozen bluegill head so it is possible but fresh is better in the summer.....Great Video!!!
Getcha a big old 12" sheetrock mud knife, cleans those shad up inna hurry! Plus you made me watch to the end again, I was waiting for the cast net and the trolling motor to get involved. Good video Hagen.
Man I'm gonna have to come down to the your neck of the woods and bring a big enough cooler. It's getting hard to find shad and specially shad that big this time of year. Great video, keep them line right and wet.
That was a hunk of a gizzard shad
Fresh or frozen they all stink😎👍
Don't Bogart that gizzard shad my friend pass some over to me
I know that spot, that's where i fish
I shot you a friend request on Facebook dude.
Have either one of you guys ever use cut carpet?
Sorry carp
Absolutely I love them. I’ve caught nice fish on carp.
All the time !
Great video, do a video on where and how to find the shad and skipjaack
👍🏻
