42 seconds in I already knew I like your commentary, I've been fishing from inexpensive watercraft bought second, third, and even 4th hand, right along with my unique array of rod and reels I've put together over the years buying them at garage sales and flea markets, about all I buy new is my tackle/bait setups, I even go after my own bait when using live bait, snorkel for lures spring summer and fall, all of this is part of the whole fishing/boating/bait catching experience. It is always rewarding to me to catch bait with a rod and reel. When I was a kid..my dad would put me on shiner duty for him and his friend to bass fish...my dad's friend had them in his pond..would chum them with bread..and catch them on a tiny hook. On a 12ft fiberglass bream buster. When I was about 10. I was catching them and pulled one out of the water and a bass jumped out of the water after it..I put it back down and caught a solid 4lb bass much to the surprise of my dad and his friend...lol..memories catching bait

Awesome videos. I’ve been freshwater fishing once, caught two water moccasins. I live on the Gulf coast (Pensacola) I do a lot of surf fishing. I love those catfish.
I would not be keen on reeling in water moccasins. Pensacola is an awesome area. Trying to talk my wife into moving there.

Man watching these catfishing videos reminds me of how much fun it is I need to move back to where they live and get out of Alaska. And as far as cricket cubs go I've gotten a 14" one with horns on his head I can't remember what the horns mean but they got like 3 spikes on each eyebrow.
Yeah I think it's around spawning time, the males grow the horns on their eyebrows.

For whatever reason I really enjoy the bait catching videos. I need to adopt your castnet throwing strategy. I've been using a castnet for about a year now and I taco more often than pancaking. Luckily I have a good bait spot so I still end up successful.
As long as you have some bait, that's all that matters!
Those nets must be heavy and there seems to be a Art Form to catching those things. I was told I'm too old and weak to learn how by my 40 Y.O. Brother who does just like you and catches all his baits. 58, you still make it look so seamless. Great job, hope you catch some giants with all those things.

Bro. This was my job as a kid. Fishing the mighty Mississippi. Get rid of the bobber. Catch those wary sunfish. Use just a long straight hook. The worm is the weight. That way easy to remove. Love the videos!
I caught some creek chub by accident last fall trying for channel cats in a small river in central iowa, majority of them were about 8-9" one was about 11". They were pretty fun to catch. Im gonna go back there this spring and use them for bait!

My biggest crick chub was around 16 inches but I literally grew up in a crick catching them and I still go back to the spots I fished when I was 7
Now they come back as bait and not pets 🤣🤣 never have much luck off them kind of a last ditch effort to get bait

I actually caught a few 22in chub (right around 2 lbs each) in my local river (the Connecticut River, between VT and NH) last month. It's wild to see the difference between adolescents and adults in a fish species.

The hardest part is the fear of losing it. The nicest net I've ever tossed, and reasonably priced. Glad ya enjoyed it sir!
Other then shad, because any real catfisherman knows shad is, "the 1"... chubs are absolutely one of my favorite baits. Also love warmouth or greenies from the river/ creek cause they are softer bodied baits then any pond or lake fish. For beginners I would say get some creek baits and try them, at a minimum it should about double your success rate. Good luck, tight lines!
I'd debate that one. Shad are tough to beat, and geographically are probably the best all around bait, but depending on season and region, I give the nod to white bass, skipjack, suckers, and even the creek chub, over shad.
@@RiverCertified I must admit, seasonal baits are my preferred choice too. There's just never a time where I go river fishing and shad are not present. I live and fish out of cincy though and for me I will never only have shad but I will always have shad, if that makes sense lol.

Any catch is fishing to me .. I enjoy bait fishing more than monster fishing because there are more actions although catching a sturgeon sometimes is a blast. Your videos are awesome bro. Please continue to bring us fans your awesome adventures.
Hey man I just want to say I personally love your videos. I'm in Ohio and fished a tournament on the muskingum river yesterday. We won with 55.2 pounds. Ended up taking the whole pot because only 5 boats competed but it was awesome! We got our 3 fish limit and all 3 flatheads from one spot. Anyways the bait that did it was cut quillback sucker that I bled out then fileted. Green sunfish, suckers, shiners. Cut shad, and bullheads barely got touched. Got 2 of the flatheads on the cut quillback and then the biggest a 27.6 # on a flapper bluegill at 6:38. The tourney ended at 7!
Just curious but why bleed out if you're using it for bait? Blood = scent. congrats on the tournament!

@@adamhilliard7722 yupp! If you bleed out a larger fish like a carp and soak the pieces of cut bait in it it soaks it up and adds more of a scent trail. Thank you btw it was my 2 other buddies first wins and we competed against some really good anglers. They are all mostly local as well so we feel pretty accomplished. We fished the same spot the entire tourney and it was the spot we caught a 35 from 2 weeks prior.
@@RiverCertified I have to get camera gear man! The last fish we caught caused shere pandemonium on our boat. All 3 of us were shaking like a leaf and acting crazy. Would have made for great content. Our nerves were absolutely shot because as one of the other boats passed us around 6:30 they said "if you dont have 60 go ahead and go home" and we currently only had a 10 and a 18 in the livewell so we thought the 27 we caught like 5 minutes later was the clutch fish. Turns out the very first fish that we caught would have been plenty because only 2 other boats caught fish. The one guys caught 2 channels and the other guys only caught 1 channel. We were extremely fortunate and made the right call to sit on the spot we found. It was a sandbar that jutted into the river that was about 3 foot dropping into 9. There was submerged cover all over the bottom of the river and we focused on the inside current break and just got lucky and found the feeding lane and put what they wanted to eat that night in the right spot
I got about 100 8 to 12 ich suckers and creek chubs for winter frozen sadly cant use live lol in Canada, another awesome video thanks again

In southwest Virginia some people call a Fall fish a creek chub...actually in the minnow family....they get up to 22 inches....my dad caught a 20 incher couple years ago...we mostly catch them when fishing for trout! Love the vids...keep them up!
If I caught something that looked like a creek chub that was 20 inches, I'd lose my mind. Even if it wasn't a creek chub haha

theres a county park outside of Altoona that when we come back, we catch the 8-10 inch chubs and decent suckers. biggest we caught was 13".
I've heard good things about that area, just a long ways to drive for bait.
I’ve caught them in local creeks as a kid 9-12 inches long ! Horney head chubs were my go to fish as a kid..
Gotta love creek chubs. Best live bait for channels, smallies and walleye here in the north east. Carolina, or 3 way rigs off the bottom, or jigheads for walleye topped off with chubs. Thanks for the video.

I've caught chubbs close to a pound id say around 12 inches maybe bigger. Had something tear a 10 or a 11 incher in half last night I guess to small to get it all . Awesome bait video .

I've thrown my net on a couple of large mouths 3 and 4 lbs. They tore the hell out of it, but managed to get them in. Wasnt expecting them
It is definitely fun to see what comes up in those nets. I've even caught a few small flatheads in mine this year.

I like bait fishing. Always look at it as a little warm up before I fish for the cats. Plus I never know what Im gonna catch when bait fishing. Sometimes you'll pull in a nice bass or a 2# cat. Always a fun surprise on light tackle.
Creek chubs up here in Rhode Island get about the size of stocker Trout. I want to say my biggest creek chub was 2 pounds or so

Not sure how much it costs to treat your tap water, but I stop at those water condenser ice stations outside of family videos/ dollar generals now. 25 cents for 1 gallon of reverse osmosis water or 1 buck for 5 gallons

I literally do the same thing. I’ve caught some huge creek chubs maybe half pound but idk. Atleast 10-12 inches. It seems like the spots get fished out to me though. One time you go there and it’s fire and then it’s not the same again. Especially with the big ones.

I have caught more species of fish bait fishing than anywhere else. I fish the tributaries of the fox river. The first time I ever caught I creek chub it was a monster, and it was very colorful with those huge mating warts on its nose. Those spots are secret excluding the information provided.

The Michigan State Record for Creek Chub is 13 inches. My largest is 11 1/4 and i thought i had a small trout on the line haha.

I must be pretty fortunate I have a pond 8 miles from my house that's full of bullheads and a creek about the same full of chubs. Gotta love NE Iowa! And the Mississippi is a 25 minute drive

Good video. I live in East TN and it completely different hear. I catch more creek chubs/slick guts(that's what there called around here) in throw net then suckers. But I don't have the best throw net either. It has those crappy plastic covers over the lead weights. I don't like it no where near as good as the pure lead weights. But thanks good luck. Saty safe.

They work, but I honestly like a little more length for casting.
The tag pole, I would’ve used for big bass fishing, they love (tag poles) or as they would call them babyfrogs.

We have a lot of creeks along bike trails that aren’t very deep. 4-6 inches and a couple of deep places. How do find the deeper creeks. Always enjoy the videos. 5ft max in Iowa?
You just keep looking. When you find a hole in a creek like that, it's generally loaded.
I will say I have used creek chubs my whole life. They are good all year round up here in Illinois. Blast to catch and the big channels love them. Better then shad if you ask me.... I typically fish the Rock River & Mississippi River using them. Now that the cat is out of the bag haha.... :)
I don't know if I like em better than shad, but I like how I can get em more consistently. I'll take either most days.
In Croatia we have 2species of chubs:chub(we call it klen) and a litle chub(klenič) they are a simmilar spicies, we alsso hawe a sunfish and blugilld which where brought from USA and they are wery invasive fish but great wells catfish bait(sory on spelling)

Awesome video brother.. those rods are the best, got a bargain bin with a 50+ dollar pflueger reel. Works like a champ. Oh, the creek chubs get pretty big. Well they do where I live, and I can catch them on foxtail or mepps. Can't wait to see the video staring these bad boys. Maybe a Walter will be in a lucky ones future.
I'm always cheap and looking for a deal too man. Never tried to catch chubs on spinners, but that would be pretty fun. I'm looking for walter all weekend and stoked!

I got a 15-16 inch creek chub on a Mr.Twister I was going for smallmouth. The thing fought like a decent smallmouth so I was excited just to be sad.

I catch pounders in Illinois out of the senachawine creek by chillicothe not to mention how incredible the small mouth are all you need to find is a deep hole

I swear I wish I could spend half as much time flathead fishing as I do bait fishing. Unfortunately its easier to get blue gills ( yet a slower process ) down here than cubs in south east Texas. Although suckers and cubs are easiest to get in my area with a 6ft heavy weight cast net in the right creeks/bayous. Thats for the informative video bud. Greatly appreciated.
I understand. I do a lot of poking around for bait spots in the summer. Try to check out one new spot a week. Been fortunate to find some real good places and that speeds things up.
I do 1 to 2 spot poking a week. But had several spots killed by all the hurricanes and tropical storms lately in the Houston area. Down here its find a good spot and next time its dead. Lol. And the woman and kids get mad when I just pull over on the highway and baitfish for a hour. Ha ha ha. But thanks again for all the great content bud. It is very appreciated.

I have had that same rod for years. It’s my lucky rod. Numerous 15lb+ carp and a lot of channels, crappie, and goldeyes . I now use it for my bait rod lol

Don't know Iowa Laws but if I find a spot like that here in Missouri I put out a wire, bread baited minnow trap in the evening and run it the next morning. That is quite successful
I'm probably gonna start doing that more next year.

I just caught a ton of pounder hybrid sunfish for bait, and if they pull drag, that's fishing. And they pulled drag
I live in Cedar Rapids Iowa and fish the Indian Creek for Chub's I've caught them up to a pound... Good for cut bait at that size
I only seem to find big fallfish in southern Pa, creek chub usually get 4-8 inches but are much more rare than fallfish

@@RiverCertified you’re prolly right, I thought creek chubs were the weird scales and random black dots. But the fallfish get massive, I’ve caught one 16-17in and nice and heavy (maybe 1.5-2 lbs)

And he had me take him down to lake ahquabi and he caught a few bluegills and we took them home and fried em up and he ate them. Catching bait is definitely fishing. Especially when using 1" plastic minnows catching everything from bluegill to perch to largemouths and everything in between out of a creek 1/2 mile back in the woods

People up north catch up 16 in Long great Pike and musky bait but some folks call it a Hoosier trout they are very good eating if you get some big enough to fillet must remember if fish are particular about their baits what they like to eat then that must be a good eating fish.
I see you are using the 2 for 1.00 bobbers from wallyworld. Slip or clip. If you pull the peg out and thread the line thru the bobber to a treble hook you can top water fish for bass.
Put a small splitshot inside for a little weight

Have always enjoyed catching bait and can use bluegills here, though anything over 4” has to be caught on a pole first. Just realized you’re in Iowa, thought it was Illinois for some reason (probably the Cubs fan notes and never realized they had fans out o state, ha!) Have a daughter in Davenport that insists on catfishing every time she comes home. Will tell her there are normal people there as well, now. 😉

I've lived in IA since I was 4.5 years old and until I found your chan I didn't know we had suckers here. I don't even know if we even have them in the area I live lol (along I-80 between Jasper and Johnson county). Now crick chubs we have, (my buddy showed me). If you have any tips on how to freeze them without them turning to mush I'd be eternally grateful lol :D
You definitely have them there. The bigger chubs freeze best. Vaccum sealing them is the best option I've found.
