TASTING THE MANY BANANA VARIETIES IN TROPICAL CAIRNS AUSTRALIA

  • FREE EBOOKLET www.sweetnaturalliving.com Here in Cairns, Australia there is a plethora of different varieties of bananas for you to enjoy! Not just your average Cavendish, that's for sure.
Bananas can be seriously awesome. If you're used to the normal variety you get all over the world, you would be amazed at the difference in taste and texture you can find in different types of bananas.
Here I go through most of the types you can find in Cairns. The Cavendish is the most prevalent, but you definitely see a lot of Monkey- and Sugar bananas (also known as Nam Wah in Thailand). Then we have the red bananas, possibly named "Red Decca", with a yoghurty, mild taste with a backdrop of coffee! The lady-finger bananas are also pretty cool; they are pretty similar to Cavendish, but feels like it's been influenced by Sugar banana. Last we also have the creamy Ducasse bananas that are also similar to the sugar bananas, but different still!
Other than the normal bananas, you have the so-called "cooking bananas". Most people think you can't eat them raw, but you definitely can. Just leave them in a place with a lot of airflow so they don't mold. They, like all bananas, need to be soft to be edible. The plantains/cooking bananas are usually a lot sweeter than other bananas. Pretty awesome.
PNG (Papua New Guinea) bananas is something I've only seen in Cairns. They are actually really awesome! A little bit like a drier version of Cavendish. They are sweeter, if you let them ripen, but eaten too early, they have a strange cabbage taste to them!
The point is, the world is FULL of awesome bananas. If you've only tried Cavendish, the normal one, you need to get out there and travel to some cool places with good bananas. Cairns is a great place, but Costa Rica might be the best place if you want to try even better bananas.
Good source of calories, easy to find, easy to eat and stay satisfied. Bananas are seriously awesome as a fuel source for fruit-hungry individuals. Go for it!

Look up Asian or Indian grocery stories in your area. Even smaller towns often have at least one now and you can find a wider variety of fruit in them. Also, if you live in the US or Canada and have a Whole Foods in your area they often carry apple bananas and red bananas. Both are very good.

@@dacypher22 this is really good to know. I was actually thinking the same thing but unsure. Hopefully can find some I like again. Don't like the cavondish bananas at all.

@@billybobscat6233 I would say you may or may not like other banana varieties depending on why you don't like the cavendish variety. If you don't like that banana-ish flavor in cavendish, you may not like most other varieties (except manzano or "apple bananas", which can be found fairly easily now). Cavendish are considered one of the most bland bananas out there. Red bananas pump the banana flavor up to an 11. But if you don't like the texture of cavendishes, you may like some of the others. Cavendishes are very dry and I feel like they have a pretty unpleasant texture compared to a lot of the other varieties which can range from juicier to almost pudding-like. Best of luck with it!

@@dacypher22 Well I actually really appreciate the input, I searched today but had no luck. However I am hoping to find some red bananas the week at least. The flavor is what I like but I Can't Stand the gritty chalky texture and bland flavor the Cavendish have. When they become more like pudding I do like them slightly more however as I'm sure you know, they tend to get bitter as much as sweet when they age. Unfortunately. If you have any suggestions on a place to buy variety of bananas breeds whether it's online or a chain store I'm definitely interested. Thanks again this does help me. Now I'm definitely interested in trying red bananas more.

@@billybobscat6233 There are a few online retailers but they are mostly insanely expensive. They are mostly independent, small, exotic fruit growers who set up an online storefront . I consider myself an amateur exotic fruit hunter and honestly even I won't order from those places (even if their wares are always tempting). You will end up paying $5 per piece of fruit or even more. You can see these high prices if you look at a place like www.melissas.com. At first glance the prices don't seem absolutely terrible ($28 for 8 pounds for a banana sampler). But where you take a bad hit is on shipping, which for produce they recommend shipping plans that cost as high as $50. As nice as their stock can look, I don't recommend it and I am sure you can see why. As far as national chains to try, do you have a Whole Foods, Sprouts or any of the other competing organic grocery stores in your area? The Whole Foods by my office is my go-to red banana supplier. You could try calling and asking so you don't have to waste the time to drive out and be disappointed. If you do find some, you may want to read some articles on how to pick them out as you can't tell their ripeness by their color. I personally pick them when they are solid on the ends and a little squishy in the middle, but my mother loves them when they are fairly squishy all over (they are even sweeter when they are squishy all over). But probably somewhere between those 2 you will find the type you like. If they are completely solid feeling all over, they are not ripe yet but you can still buy them and put them in a paper sack. Check on them twice a day to see if they are getting squishy because they will ripen fast. I hope you find some!

I ate what I thought was a cavendish banana, but it tasted like and had the consistency of marshmello; it was delicious. In other banana news, if you peel and freeze the baby bananas or the sugar bananas, and then let them thaw in a mason jar the ice inside the fruit will melt away with the sugars and form a super sweet banana syrup at the bottom of the jar. Eat the thawed bananas with a fork and dip it in the syrup; it's so good.

The Cavendish was created in the UK; It was perfect to be marketed and mass produced, no seeds and mediocre taste but very resistant to disease, various temperatures and humidity levels. Ultimately though, they are vulnerable to Panama Disease and many botanists are trying to create a new type of banana that can be as easily marketed.

So far where I live, I've been able to try the conventional cavendish (they're all right... a little bit "potent" for me when they're fully ripe), red bananas (my second favorite), burro bananas (not very sweet or potent, but oddly very creamy-- I'd eat them again), and manzano bananas (my no. 1 favorite thus far-- so sweet and bright-tasting, but without that odd, potent aroma of a ripe cavendish).

Yes, mon. Blessings from Jamaica. Interesting video. One thing I'd like to share with you is that where you refer to the flowers that come off the ends of bananas as the 'bottom' of the fruit - that is actually the top. As gravity-defying as it seems, bananas don't hang down on the tree, they grow up, reaching for the sun. So the flowers are at the top, catching the rays - and also attracting the pollinators that buzz or hum around. And finally, because I see that you (correctly) consider how primates do it (and have been doing it for millennia) when you think about how we ourselves should be doing it (naturally) today in our modern society (I wouldn't call what we have now 'progress', but that's another topic all together) and doing whatever, whether diet and eating or what have you, a primate (usually always) will peal a banana from the flower end first - not the stem (or the 'handle' as I used to think of it as a kid). I'm not saying your way is wrong, but being a banana lover myself, I too have studied this amazing food for a long time. And I recall quite vividly that my first big "banana-revelation" was seeing that bananas actually do not hang on the tree, but grow up towards the sun instead. This blew my mind when I first saw it. (Isaac Newton has my/our thinking conditioned quite effectively - 'conditioned' being the nice way of saying it.) The second big revelation was that primates in the wild, especially chimpanzees and bonobos, when eating this awesome food, peal the fruit from the "top" and eat it top-first, even discarding the black and hard little thing that is right at the tip of the fruit where the flower was before removing the peal. It makes sense when you think about it, no?I don't know if it is just in my head (I don't think so) but since I began exclusively eating the fruit this way - both pealing and eating - I seem to get more enjoyment from it. Besides, if it's good enough for my brothers the chimp and bonobo - and other primates as well - then it is good enough for me.Cheers.

@@dianesamson22 I find myself outside of the U.S., and in Taiwan. They have your standard bananas, but also many other varieties that are far more satisfying to the hunger and palate.
When I was in India, I used to buy wild bananas up in the north rural country off of an old wood buggy.
The monkeys used to hang around the cart to steal bananas. The guy had a stick. When I used to buy my bananas for breakfast, and sit on a rock to eat, the monkeys would surround me, looking pitiful, copying my every gesture of eating, and it seemed like they were mocking me.
I was told to throw them the banana peels and they would eat them. If they didn’t eat them, throw the peels on the ground, and the passing cows would eat them.
The peels of organic bananas are not rubbery, thin, almost sticking to the fruit.
The bananas sit on the cart all day and get baked under the sun. They taste like a creamy banana cream pie. Some have an orange hue inside. Very hearty bananas.
The monkeys start to get closer and closer to me eating the peels as they reach their hands out and touch my body, meaning they are no longer satisfied with the peels, they want the fruit.

From what I’ve seen of those who grow and harvest their own bananas in a farm, they too cut them off in large bunches while fully grown but still green and let them ripen.
I believe it would be difficult to harvest if you waited till the bunch was ripe - in handling as well as inconsistencies.

My fave is the Williams Banana, in Hawaii. If you guys haven't yet purchased your tix to Thailand, you might consider stopping off in Sulawesi -- the Bananas are indescribably delish, and so incredibly inexpensive. Also, the Coconuts are *enormous*. It's Durian season right now, too...

In Queensland, we called the same fruit lady fingers or sugar bananas. So I think you are right. We do have a large variety of fruit. Enjoy your time here!

+Gregory Toomey Yesh there's some confusion going around, but lady fingers are different from sugar bananas - in queensland!

I'm feeling hungry for some bananas right now. Sweet and not too soft ones. I really want to buy some Thai bananas right now but I only go to the store once a month. I also want to try plantains. Though it would be hard to try and keep the mold off for that long.

We have apple trees, and the neighbor has plums! This year I'll try and eat it off of the trees!! There are Rainer cherries you can do that with here and it is so much better fresh off a branch!

Cavendish are actually sub par cheap cloned bananas, they are easily grown and they are picked while they are not even ripe so they can survive being shipped around the world. They are the "typical banana". I think the best banana is the Blue Java banana, they have a beautiful blue peel, white flesh and taste like vanilla ice cream which is out of this world, as the are know as ice cream bananas. They do grow and sell them around Northern Australia.

Do ripe banana's on the tree taste better and are more nutritious than the ripe banana's that you have to wait days for it to ripen before eating?

@Alpha Centauri Dude the bio-electricity of a plant leaf or fruit immediately dies down after a few hours once picked, there is proof everywhere

    • @Elias-iq2mn
      @Elias-iq2mn 5 років тому +1

@Alpha Centauri citations don't prove anything, its like asking for proof that a apple will rot once off the tree, its simply only a matter of time after the ripening process, that all things eventually die once their source of sustenance , in this case the tree, is removed, if you live your life waiting for words from a so called professional instead of doing the research yourself you will be very disappointing, im not here to argue or give you answers, everyone must look for the truth themselves, not simply trust scientific professionals, but since you asked so kindly i will tell you where to start, - search Kirlian photogrphy

Favorite is Cavendish. All other never ripen properly. Red bananas are hit or miss. Picked way too early I agree. Same with nam doc ma.i (honey) mangoes. Most grocery store fruit is low quality picked immature. But Cavendish are at least solid to provide sugar/carbohydrate calories.
