My math teacher in high school was from Trinidad/Tobago he didn't eat American bananas and was adamant that we shouldn't either. He said they tasted like wet paper.
I think a lot of it has to do with we prefer the taste of what we grew up on but yeah she's right, most of the bananas we consume are flavorless.

I've been telling people for years many foods tasted better when I was younger. "Yeah but Dad, you're old and your taste buds change". While there may be SOME truth to that, beer still tastes like beer, vienna sausage still tastes like vienna sausage but I'll be damned if I can find fruits and vegetables that were as good as they used to be. Every now and again an orange is good and some local tomatoes and onions. There is also a farm in Cali (can't recall the name) that when I see their nectarines at the store, I buy them. Superb!
Yeah, definitely a real thing. About 3 years ago I asked the owner of the pizza place I grew up on how his food still tastes the same. With suppliers going out of business and being bought out and stuff I figured he'd have changes to his ingredients. he told me it's his biggest challenge. In fact he makes a 4 hour round trip once a week to one of the few suppliers left that stocks what his family has been buying for 60 years.
I can't agree on the Vienna Sausage thing. They definitely tasted different when I was a kid because I tried some for the first time in years and they were horrible. But I don't like chicken sausage/hotdogs and I swear they were made with pork or at least more pork when I was younger and now they're straight chicken. Only ones I could eat were the BBQ because the taste was masked by the sauce. Vienna Sausages are not the same, and its probably because of inflation they have to change the recipe to keep them cheap.
Another is corn. They kept breeding for "sweetness" and now it's just cloyingly sweet. I don't want Kandy Korn, I want Corn!
I heard there used to be hundreds of varieties of Apples in the USA until big corporations forced the orchards to grow about 5 varieties

True story. I live on the coast of California and received a shipment of avocados from GuacFarm and they arrived in perfect shape. In fact, I had to wait 4 days for them to ripen. It was so worth the wait though. My neighbors still talk about the size of those avocados. haha It's true what you say about vine ripened strawberries and tomatoes. Local farmer's markets are the best if you can't grow your own.

Toh-om! Stoooooop! [whimpers] Ever since your video four or five years ago first mentioning the Gros Michel banana my desire to eat one has become an obsession (my offer of $20 just for one Gros Michel still stands). When I was in hiking near the upper Manatee River in Parish Florida I cam across an orange tree and it’s fruit was in season. I had never tasted such a delicious, tree ripened orange in my life. We really need to become more of an agrarian society. There is nothing that compares to FRESH! Thanks for the tease! 😂

Hey Brian! Gross Michael is nothing in comparison to apple bananas and mysore and improved mysore bananas! They are absolutely incredible!
My Dad was stationed at Fort Clayton, Panama Canal Zone. There were many gardens there. We would stop and buy fresh, ready to eat vegetables and fruit. The bananas were the best I have ever had

I live on the Portuguese island of Madeira, east atlantic, off the coast of Morocco. Our main Banana is the Dwarf Cavendish, Followed by Robusta and Grand Nain (Chiquita). Thankfully both Manzano and Prata readily available here. The Prata or Silver usually commands a higher price due to the tall plants that quite often get damaged by strong winds. I also love that Monstera Delisiosa grows semi wild all over the island, taking over abandoned gardens and wasteground. I have several plants which produce fruit within a short walk from me and a neighbour who regularly gives us its fruit.
I'll be doubling my Monstera Deleciosa output in the coming years.

All im getting from this is that small scale farming globally would be more beneficial, you could then produce better tasting good healthy food and still ship it without as much issue
but we wouldn't produce nearly enough food for the planet's 8 billion hungry mouths. our system has tradeoffs but to feed 8 billion people require requires efficiency and economies of scale
Hi Tom: Just saw the Banana video! That is absolutely a true statement. I know that as a fact. Coming from Jamaica, I do vividly recall eating the Gros Michel bananas. The best tasting banana in my opinion. We had other varieties also such as he locally named "Honey Banana". It is smaller and more rotund, but you can guess from the name, it is really sweet! My wife says you cannot eat only one of those, 3 to 4 is the obligatory minimum! As usual, a well crafted and presented video! BTW, I just finished eating my Hall Avocados I got at the Farm. They were superb!! Also saw Fruitful Trees eating his Hall, Monroe and Choquette on his video!

Cavendish just aren't worth eating. They hurt my stomach. Lady finger hurt less, but still. I hate what mass production has done to flavour. I've relied on your expertise to make sure I'll get avocado one day. I dread to think if they start messing with our avocados!! Great info, thanks for sharing. 🤯💖🥑

A homegrown cavendish banana, picked when it's actually ripe, tastes a lot better than the ones picked green for the stores, but it doesn't compare to just about any other variety picked at peak ripeness.
Mysore bananas are the best, though. So good that I go through the trouble of growing a couple mysore plants up here in northern Illinois, zone 5b. I grow those 'Truly Tiny' bananas, too, but those 4 footers are the only variety that people will buy up here with winter and all. I get it, though. 4ft is a lot easier to manage indoors, than say the 16ft Mysores eventually reach... lucky for me, mine are only 8ft at the moment. lol
I've heard a lot about the Mysore. I'll have to try that. And yes I agree with you a properly ripened cavendish tastes way better when picked at the right time.
Manzana Bananas are really tasty. I first saw them in Cuba. Now you can pick up the mini version at Publix once in awhile.
yep and the trick is to let them ripen till the skin is almost peeling off...that's heaven.

Thank you Kay. I don't think I'll be going back to selling the trees. I've learned I'm too small to jump through each states importation requirement hoops regarding sale of live plants. I can only sell them in person.
Gross Michel are my favorite ripe bananas to eat. I grow a few trees in my backyard. They are still plentiful in my community. Love your inspirational video. God bless.

yep, if you prefer the Cavendish then something resembling the Gros Michel can definitely be overpowering.

I really dislike that tart "apple-ish" flavor that most banana varieties have. What I like about Cavendish is that it doesn't have that tartness. Are there any other varieties that aren't tart?
The Gros Michel I describe in this vid lacks the tartness. It's pure banana flavor.
One important fact most poorer people don't buy food from logistics they buy at local communities for dirt cheap or stick to basic refine grains etc. So why food is distributed the way it is, is mostly due to profit.
Where do poorer people get their food in the winter?

I have 5 bunches of bananas just about ready to eat. I will never buy a store banana again. I think papaya is the greatest taste difference of all fruits.

Max, too cold in NYC you'd have to keep it indoors in the cold weather and I don't know if a banana will give fruit indoors. We don't grow them from seeds we use "pups". Pups are little shoots that develop at the base of mature trees. You might look up a farm called "going bananas" and see if they will ship you one. good luck!

I just thought to ask you for a little advice...i live in central europe,and because of that we get tropical fruit only that has been picked off the tree/plant when it is unripe. And i wanted to ask you for a small tip,that how should i choose a mango that will be somewhat close to a ripe one? I love mangoes,but almost every piece that i had was not soo good tasting. Almost all tasted like turpentine for some reason.
Emma, I know that chemical flavor you're talking about, so frustrating. It's tough with mangos because for you they'll all be imports so you'll need to get lucky. There's not really a trick to picking a good one, they'll all have been picked at the same time and gone through the identical procedure to get to your kitchen. Those of us who live here in mango territory are so grateful we get to pick our own and enjoy them.

I was born in Guam. We had a starfruit tree and it was my most favorite thing to eat. Fast forward 30+ years on the mainland, imagine my glee when I started to see starfruit in local groceries. I was apprehensive about them for a while. I knew they didn't look the right color and certainly didn't have the proper fragrance. But dangit if I didn't miss them. Finally tried one and haven't bought another since.
I really, really miss fresh and ripe starfruit.

My husband was born in Guam as well and his main complaint is the availability of good fruit.
He said he used to get mango for free and now he has to pay for worse quality 😂 I never liked mango and he said it’s because the mango we get here is trash. It’s fibrous and tough. One time out of state I had a smaller yellow one and it was great.
we live in the Appalachian mountains, so not a great selection even as far as the mainland goes.

Hi Skipadd, I don't sell cuttings but I've seen them online from time to time. Depends on the time of year.

What kind of climate do you need to grow Gros Michel bananas? I live in southwest Pennsylvania, would it be possible? I have a green house but it’s not big enough for a whole banana tree…
Ry, Banana requires a pretty warm climate, USDA Hardiness zone 9a and above. definitely a tad too cold in PA but I don't know much about greenhouses so I suppose if you manage the climate in there you might get a banana. the Gros Michel gets about 9 ft high

Uncle, are loquat an invasive species on your ranch? Here in San Francisco, in the tiny back yard of my little house, with year round fog, overcast days, & 55 degree temps - the loquat tree drops seed - and every year, I have to weed out dozens of seedlings. I just pulled out 6 more today. If I left them, they would take over the yard, and their roots would ruin my foundation and plumbing. I've tried potting the seedlings to give away. Nobody wants them.
They are not invasive but as you said they are prolific. I get hundreds of seedlings sprouting up that I have to mow every year.

I am from a tropical place in India. I have six varieties of bananas grown in our backyard...... Long ones, short ones, fragrant ones, red coloured ones...and such....each have their own names as well. Back in 2016 I was in the UK for a few months and I had a colleague from Finland when I said we have many variety of bananas and each tasted different she couldn't believe that........ she was asking how one banana tastes different from another one....all are bananas!!!
People know only a limited number of commercial breeds such as the Cavendish or Grand Naine.

Though I've never got to try a Gros Michel. The fact that bananas don't taste like bananas anymore and I never knew it. Also its been said the song "Yes, we have no Bananas!" dates back to the time between the two varieties, when none of the stores had them.
And so says The History Guy, apparently there are hundreds of banana varieties in the tropics but only one that gets exported to the continental U.S.
Including a blue banana I discovered later called a Blue Java that allegedly tastes like ice cream. Haven't tried that either!
I grow Blue Java and they are beautiful and delicious.

@@c.rutherford they've got a fruity flavor and for me a little bit like citrus. It's the kind of fruit where you take a bite and you want to keep eating more and more.
Artificial banana flavor doesn't taste like banana, not because it's Gros Michel flavor but because artificial flavors suck. Artificial grape and apple don't taste anything like the actual fruit either. Fake cherry and strawberry are absolutely disgusting. Citrus flavors come closest because citric acid contributes a lot to the flavor of citrus.
The bananas your grandmother bought in the 70s were Cavendish. Gros Michel had already been gone for twenty years.
It is a shame that commercial bananas are such a monoculture. There are so many varieties and the flavors are all over the place and yet, I have never found any banana to taste anything like artificial banana flavor.

Another one people are experiencing the true flavor of is dragon fruit.

Please help me. 🙏 I bought 2 Gros Michel banana trees..they are small plants right now but I live in the high desert near Mojave can you tell me what I need to make these banana tree thrive here? A greenhouse? Vaporizer? We get 105-110 degrees in the summer sometimes
April, I'm so sorry but I don't know what they'd need to grow out where you are. it looks like you are in the right USDA hardiness zone so give them a lot of water and fertilizer and you should be good.

Here in the Philippines, our supermarkets offer different varieties of bananas commercially. We have the Lakatan, Latundan, Señorita, Saba, and the Cavendish. The Cavendish is the most grown cultivar in the Philippines for commercial purposes but are not preferred by the taste of Filipinos and are only grown for export. The best tasting and widely bought cultivar here is the Lakatan. You should try it too.

Yes Gros Michel is natural. I don't know if they produce seeds. I'll take a close look in my next batch but we don't grow them from seed. The plant itself puts out little shoots we call pups and a new stalk grows from there.

once I see one or two turn yellow on the bunch I just cut the whole bunch off. I'd rather they turn yellow in my kitchen than outside where critters can get to them. but is usually wait until I see at least 1 yellow banana on there.

Cavendish banana has been the commercial variety since the 1950s. So your memory of 1970s bananas was almost certainly a Cavendish and not a Gros Michel. 🤷♂️ You are old, but not so old that you were buying Gros Michel bananas as a kid.

I'm not sure. I'll take a closer look next time I eat one. we don't plant them from seed we use the shoots the plant produces prior to fruiting
whenever I get a chance to visit South East Asia, I eat banana almost everyday like I have never eaten banana before. Banana(and other fruits) in SEA tasted so much better than fruit in the US. While in the US, Chiquita Banana is better than Dole however, not sure why but Doles Banana taste bland.

Guavas in India are so good and we grow them fresh in our garden but the ones in Canada taste like nothing.
Kat, we lost our guava tree in hurricane Irma in 2017. Those fruit were so delicious and made our yard smell so nice.
I just bought some super large grapes at the grocery store they have no sweetness to them, kinda gross, and it cost more than the sweeter cheaper grapes

it's hard to directly answer your question because the premise is incorrect. The Cavendish is not genetically modified. Also seeded vs non seeded has nothing to do with whether a fruit is genetically modified. Thank you I know how they propagate a banana plant from the sucker aka the pup of the mother tree the reason I said the cavendish is genetically modified because the seeds are sterile you can't grow a banana plant from the cavendish using a banana or maybe that only applies to store bought bananas which are all cavendish

I haven't looked at what you suggested but I have been doing a lot of research on bananas since I found out the cavendish banana we eat is sterile it's claimed to be a natural hybrid a cross between Musa acuminata and Musa balbisiana
A ton of stuff is like this. My dad, granddad and great grandfather planted an orchard in 1954. They grew Gravensteins, Macantosh and a couple other varities. They planted 18000 or so trees from seed from apples bought from stores. They got 17000 trees of the correct type. You can't do that now with store bought apples. How much genetice engineering has gone on in our food we have never been told about.
Jayman, thank you for your comment. I'm not 100% certain the information you've been given is correct. Apples do not grow from seed. It's not a result of genetic engineering, it's just the way mother nature made apples. There's only ever been one Macintosh tree grown from seed all the rest are the result of grafting. I can't imagine your family ran an orchard of that size with seed grown trees.
The first genetically engineered apples to make it to market happened only about a decade ago.
There's no way your dad, granddad and great grandfather got 17000 trees of the correct type from seed. Most would be junk fruit, only fit for hard cider. Alcohol was the main purpose of apple production for a long time. Still would be, too, had grafting never been figured our.
