ARE GREEN LEAFY VEGETABLES PART OF THE OPTIMAL RAW FOOD DIET?

  • FREE EBOOKLET www.sweetnaturalliving.com Almost everyone on the low fat raw vegan diet seems to be very adamant about consuming greens - but is it really necessary?
    Looking at the matter from a scientific point of view, a diet of fruits, occasionally some nuts, as well as plenty of coconut water - there's not a single nutrient missing. As long as you're eating enough calories from TROPICAL and SUBTROPICAL fruits there's really no issue. There's plenty of minerals in fruits even though people usually think of greens when talking about minerals.
    The other way to look at the matter is from a more instinctive, intuitive point of view. In this sense, greens fail to appeal to my senses the way fruit does. I very rarely, if ever, crave greens, they are not appealing to my eyes, smell or taste. They often have a bitter taste to them, making them disgusting or boring at best. This is why people eat greens and vegetables with dressings!
    If you can't, or don't prefer, to eat the food by itself in its raw natural state, you've got to question that food as an optimal food for humans. Why would we be designed to eat a food that does not appeal to us?
    People tell me I'll change over time and slowly start enjoying greens, I doubt it but I am open to the idea. Nevertheless, I can't see why something that's necessary for our health would have to be an acquired taste! No one needs to learn how to eat sweet fruit! Even breast milk is sweet!
    If you're not eating high quality fruit grown in ideal conditions, greens may or may not work as a "supplement" in order to keep you nourished to some degree, but ideally speaking, I see fruit (including seasonal nuts to a small degree and coconuts to a large degree) as the only viable source of food for humans!

    Nature provides all the nutrition we need. What do you think people did before grocery stores ? Don't you think your body knows what it needs?! We give way too much credit to the established norms and not enough to our natural instincts. I like how this youtubers emphasizes the body's natural desires and cravings and what we would eat if we were in nature. People discount and ignore what their bodies are telling them!

    I grew up on a farm and loved eating greens and vegetables raw off the vine so to say. To this day, I am drawn to veggies, esp. living butter lettuce, kale, peas, avocados, cucumbers, cilantro, broccoli, etc. So I think everyone is different. I also eat fruit. I find an all fruit diet too sweet for my taste, but agree that raw food always makes me feel the best.

    Of course a bunch of kale or whatever doesn't appeal to most people its not sweet. Sweet mangoes etc are way easier on the taste buds and receptors in the brain than a bunch of greens. There is an addictive aspect to sweet things in the brain. But damn I feel so alive having just one green smoothie a day. And I'm not thinking about nutrients etc when eating greens, I'm noticing how my eyes glow, and how how my body energy just soars. Don't eat things just because it's easier to eat. Eat because food is medicine.

    There are so many voices telling us all what to eat, but it always comes back to: "What is my body telling me?" What do I crave in it's raw natural state? and the answer for me is always fruit. I cannot find a flaw to that logic. Great video brother, keep up the good work.

    I found this perspective really interesting and thought provoking. I will have to start paying attention to if I'm drawn to a food because I naturally want to eat it or if there's a voice inside me saying I "should". I also really like the point about seeing a cow in it's natural state and not wanting to eat it at all! So much food these days is completely masked (especially packaged stuff from the store) it's like we have no idea what we're even eating, its so unrecognizable. P.S. I'm watching this video while eating broccoli and kale LOL.

    you have trained your palate to only want sugary fruits it seems. I can eat plain greens all day because I switch them up and eat alot of them. people get bored of them because they do not switch them up. we have to because the alkaloids in the plants. also people do not chew food the easy they are support to in order for proper absorption. my energy levels are way higher and my body regains energy quicker after long workouts. they contain chlorophyll, carbohydrates, are low in sugar and have easily absorbable proteins. I eat more greens then I do fruit and my body thrives amazingly better than any other diet I have encountered.

    Thank you for this video! I have been raw vegan for a few years and recently I have been questioning why I am spending so much money on making sauces to try and make my salad taste better. I have been really struggling to eat salads and certainly cannot bare eating them without a delicious fruit dressing poured over the top. So I came to the conclusion that something must be going on as I only prefer to eat fruit and I’m forcing myself to eat vegetables just to be “healthy”. Then fruitarianism popped into my head. I am really grateful for your videos as it makes complete sense to me and I am going to start eating mono meals of tropical fruit/fruit when I do my food shop. I was also wondering do you eat nuts and seeds? Thank you 🌈

    it's very relieving to hear another "raw fooder" say what I've been feeling lately. the only time I "enjoy" greens is blended in a smoothie with fruit. I know I'm not eating the absolute best quality fruit so I feel as if it is my supplementation for certain nutrients. but I have NEVER enjoyed salads without some type of dressing to enhance flavor. I'm glad your channel exists. cheers

      Simone Weber It's likely that we can convert vitamin K to K2 in our bodies. Another interesting thing to note is that, just like vitamin b12, its produced by bacteria and therefore a healthy intestinal flora may contribute to our k2 intake.

    Thank You Brother for another very interesting and inspiring video. I used to live in Miami, Florida, but now I've been living in Chile for over 1 year. Only almost 4 years ago I went vegetarian. And for over a year now I've been more & more of a Raw Vegan. I eat and totally enjoy vegetable salads now days ( some from my own garden ). I do use Olive Oil & sometimes Sea Salt on them. I eat a great variety of vegetables ( of which I enjoy most of them without the Olive Oil ), but of which I am eating primarily for health ( of which of course I hear about from the experience & knowledge of other human beings but also from my instinctual attraction to them ). Instinctually I feel I am in the right path because I feel better than in my past. I also come across edible plants in my near environment that I feel attracted to because there are not many fruit trees ( and less tropical fruit trees ) around me here in Chile. I eat two meals a day & aside from those meals I drink water or herbal teas ( sometimes with a bit of home-made nut milks ) and sometimes with honey . I care primarily about longevity & health ( which is also peace & happiness ). What do you think about my state of diet & process so far? And what do you think about the Human Being evolving itself to needing less food ? What do you think about Breatherianism ? Much Love Brother. Thanks again

    • @sweetnaturalliving
      @sweetnaturalliving  8 років тому +5

      +Ete Bliss Thanks for sharing your story brother! It's a complex, yet simple journey with regards to what you are speaking about and I am sure we would enjoy talking in person about it in depth if we ever have the chance, but for now, in simple terms:
      1. I think your diet sounds MUCH better than the standard diet people are eating and as you say, you feel much better than before, that makes sense as you have increased the amount of whole, fresh, living foods in your diet.
      2. I personally think you would feel even better on a fruit diet, without any refined products like oil, on a lower fat intake and higher intake of sugars from fruit. I see us as frugivores not herbivores.
      3. I don't think we are evolving to eating less food, and I don't see the value in eating less either. "Less" is simply an arbitrary word. I believe "eating less" is no better than "breathing less". It's a natural physiological function.
      4. Breatharianism being the end point of eating less, I don't personally see the value, or validity of it. Our spiritual nature is just that, and I don't believe our physical nature "affects" our spiritual nature. I see it the other way around. Our physical body is a manifestation of our spiritual body, and whatever we do in the physical realm is just a "game" we play. If we wanna play the "eat less game" as a kind of spiritual practice, then sure, just like playing the "meditation" game or the "hold my hand up in the air for 20 years" game or "sing songs" game or the "go to church" game, so many games, and that's awesome. So let's play our games, our permission slips for higher evolution, but I don't see the breatharianism as absolutely something that has anything to do with "improved" physical health, if anything it's very unhealthy.
      Those are some of my thoughts on the subject, but I mean no disrespect and I find everyones story and experiences valid and valuable in the grand scheme of things. Life is mysterious and fascinating for sure. It sounds like you are on a very rewarding and interesting journey, keep it up :)
      Blessed Love brother!

    • @etebliss
      @etebliss 8 років тому +2

      :D Thank YOU. And thank you for your reply. I think it would be awesome meeting in person with you some day :) Thank you for your advice.
      Indeed we are all playing games within this one huge Game we call Life & Existence. As I said before I want my body to live long & happy, so that I can play with it more, & help others to play & be happy as well.
      Maybe because of my present natural surroundings & conditions I am not eating just fruits ( although one of my meals consists of just fruits ). Or maybe because I have not yet chosen to eat just fruits and experiencing that, although I sure feel inspired & attracted to doing so as I see you & others talking & having the same great ( or similar ) experiences with it.
      When I envision this world as I wish it to be ( A Conscious Paradise ), with every Human living in peace & in love with one another & with the rest of the planet, I see us eating what ever is around in nature. I see us using our unique human abilities & potentials to assist our lives & the lives of all. I see us eating less simply because our whole planetary ecology would be in a healthier & purer state. Our food would be more nutritious. Our air. Our water. Our whole environment would be less in the contaminated state that it is now. Our thoughts & our actions would also be more pure & creative. And this over-all state of purity I feel would support needing & wanting less but at the same time living & doing more.
      As I'm sure you know, this isn't the state of our world now days. But sure I am that happiness & peace are things you look forward to as well. For this reason I am happy & grateful of your videos & your sharings, as this is creating consciousness & awareness in others, not just from what you share, but also from the portal that you open for others to share too. Thank you for reading my words & sharing with me yours. With great honor & joy I end this message looking forward to more of your sharings & mines!

      +Sweet Natural Living While travelling I've met many healthy people mostly vegetarian and some vegans like me that are food conscious since 5 years+ (I'm just a HCLF vegan since nearly one year). Nearly all of them saw eating less or just the amount you need as a very important health factor and for longevity. The idea is that if you eat healthy for a long time your body becomes more efficient in absorbing the food. So a totally different idea than the normal HCLF carb abundance (more is less). I saw for example a 8 year raw food vegan girl of the age of 31 that looked like 21 (really). When I saw her eat maybe 200 kcal of fruit and alot of greens and veggies I told her that from what I know that should be undereating but she seems to do fine. She just answered: I don't believe in calories. I believe in minerals, vitamins but mostly energy and information in the food that we eat.
      Very interesting.
      Than I met some people who put a lot of attention into sun gazing/bathing, breathing and and drinking high quality water (from sources and good filters). The idea behind that is also that we basically only need energy (which can come from food, meditation, water, social contacts, walking barefoot in nature etc. etc.)
      When I started traveling I really understood the diversity of life and how important it is to always be open minded and flow/adapt like everything in nature. This is why I'm happy that I stayed open even after the amazing proofs I indoctrinated myself with via youtube and books one year ago that made me so healthy and euphoric.
      There is more of course like many people talking about the amazing benefits from drinking kefir or raw milk from free range respectfully treated animals this is why I told myself that I would try 1 glass of raw goat or cow milk (even if I never liked that all my life) or an egg after all those months just to check how my body will react IF I find a farm that treats the animals with respect so work with them in a symbiosis and not with slaves (which I sadly haven't seen yet).
      I could go on about releasing dogmas that are often too tight into our heads but this post is already too long. I hope this was somehow interesting :D
      Keep on the nice videos but don't pay too much attention to the rules of 80/10/10 for example because it seems to be more complex than that most of the time (maybe the most important part here is really like you often say eating tropical tree ripened fruit).

    • @sweetnaturalliving
      @sweetnaturalliving  8 років тому +4

      JobbaMoscha Thanks for sharing that! However, the point is not to eat MORE than you need, or LESS, but just enough. I trust the body in knowing how to regulate eating, just like it regulates breathing an everything else. Go for a run and you'll start breathing heavier, effortlessly regulated. That same run will also make you hungrier, for fuel. That fuel can be measured in calories. It's simply a unit of measurement.
      "Not believing in calories" is kind of like saying "I don't believe in kilometers"...you know what I mean?
      The essence though, is probably to trust the body more than predetermined ideas. Don't just eat 3000 calories because some theory says you need it, eat according to hunger. But there are so many people that hold on too tightly to ideas regarding eating. Either ideas about eating MORE or LESS. Having ANY such idea in mind when eating can interfere with that natural process of eating.
      I don't believe in eating LESS. Neither do I believe in eating MORE. Let's just EAT - the way nature intended!
      Blessed Love!

But, it's tough living in canada, so, I go the way of high fruit, and cooked starches when I have too, but I find I keep thinking about the summer coming up and all the ripe fruit on trees around here that goes unpicked....I think I'm going to just try to forage as much as possible.
    Also been seriously researching about making a greenhouse to grow some of my own tropical trees.....I know that it wouldn't be practical, unless I went really large scale. I'd love to have our family maybe move to a tropical country once my kids are a little bit older (still have our 2nd on the way this september) Maybe a vacation or two to costa rica or another tropical place is in our future in the next couple years. Kinda wish I would have discovered this lifestyle much earlier in life, but I'm still thankful that I found it at 33 years of age.
    Anyways, thanks for sharing these great videos of yours, I've learned a fair bit, thank you.

    I've watched a few of your videos so far and I have to say that it was by far the most useful info ever! I've had the same thoughts about this stuff and forced myself to eat a ton of greens and it allways backfired cause ofcourse, not enough calories. Thank you for sharing!
    But I do have a question. What are the best fruits for dinner? Does it matter at all?

    • @sweetnaturalliving
      @sweetnaturalliving  8 років тому +1

      I would say it doesn't matter really, as long as you're enjoying it and eat enough calories for the day. Personally I find that bananas work very poorly for me at dinner, they are just not stimulating enough and for dinner I like to have something a little bit more exciting. Mangoes are the best for me. I'll often finish off with an avocado after the mangoes too. Nectarines work allright. I've never had watermelon for dinner, that's more of a breakfast fruit for me, while bananas are more of a lunch fruit. I guess everyone has their own preferences :)

    Hey sweet natural (I haven't watched enough of your videos to know your name yet) I really enjoy your channel. your perspective is refreshing and I have thought the same points you have made on this topic for a while now. I think it makes a lot of sense as well and nature is perfect by design. it is only when we stray from the natural order of things that problems arise. what's your take on phytonutrients in regards to fruit? I eat greens mostly for the phytochemicals and I haven't really done any research on phytonutrients in fruits. do you think they are necessary for maintaining health and eliminating toxins even though vitamins do the same thing? also, I'm attempting to gain weight on my plant based diet and I've never had a strictly fruit based diet. any insights on that?

    I've personally cut my greens consumption down quite a lot in the past few months and have felt a lot better. I have felt more drawn to tropical fruits and fruit fats in this time which I have honoured and really felt better energy and healing. living in Scotland I do feel every week or two I want to eat a big tender mixed leafy green salad which I do actually enjoy without dressing. you are right about the chard, there have been times I've ate chard kale and beets in the past and my tongue and throat have started to burn and slightly swell leaving me unable to eat for a while. I stay well away from them now and enjoy better digestion too

    • @memz5028
      @memz5028 7 років тому

      It would depend on where you live. If you have access to free fruit (like fruit trees all over) or you can shop at co-ops or farmers markets year-round it would be doable. If you live in a rural and/or colder climate it would be terribly expensive. I can't do a fruitarian diet where I live bc the fruit is really expensive and it's only decent at the supermarket 3-4 months out of the year.

    Thank you for this information. This is the first of your videos that got my attention about the way you rationalize eating fruits over other foods so thank you. Are there any specific foods that you would recommend to help with improving symptoms of anxiety. Any information would be appreciated even it it isn't food related. Thank you :)

    • @sweetnaturalliving
      @sweetnaturalliving  8 років тому +2

      +SongnFeeling A proper diet, which in simple terms is one based around whole, fresh, quality, raw, ripe fruits eaten in sufficient quantity, is part of what makes us healthy. There are many other factors as well of course, like sunshine, sleep, rest, activity etc. When healthy, we are less likely to experience unhealthy psychological issues, but that doesn't mean they can't occur.
      "Anxiety" is a very broad definition, and there are so many nuances, but what I would recommend would probably be to investigate (with your mind) what exactly lies at the root of the problem. Why do you hold the belief that causes you anxiety, and when you find it, ask why it's there and see if you could possibly eradicate it by logic! That's one way I guess...You'll find your way if you want it. It's OK. We all have some degree of anxiety and fear, it's part of our life journey! Be there with the fear and observe it! Then realize that if you are observing it - it's not fundamental to YOU! Anything observed is external. Let it go :)

    Good points Mikkel. I did have greens for dinner tonight but...I added chopped tomatoes, jalapeno peppers (oh oh), lime juice and half of an avocado. Would not have been able to sit there and munch the greens on their own and I ate several mangoes before this grand salad. I think eating greens for humans is definitely learned behavior and not automatic, just as you may have observed with children not wanting to eat greens. This goes for zucchini squash also, as I'm not drawn to eating it raw unless it has some dressing on it. I did enjoy my salad, but I've had to wean myself from pouring some sort of dressing over it. Hey man like the channel, just want to know how do fruitarians get there protein? If you are eating mangos and papayas and and bananas and avocados all day, where do you get your protein from? Do you feel that protein is a necessary macronutrient?

    • @sweetnaturalliving
      @sweetnaturalliving  8 років тому +2

      +MikeLive1285 Protein is an absolute essential part of a healthy diet, and there is no whole food on the planet that does not contain protein. All fruits contain protein. Most fruits are predominately carbohydrate based, but there is both essential fats and all essential amino acids, present in pretty much every single fruit there is. Tropical fruits are especially good for humans in that regard.
      On an all fruit diet, protein usually comes out at about 5-7 % of total calories. People on a standard diet eat about 15% protein. There's clear scientific evidence that most people are getting way too much protein and that 5-10% should be plenty enough. Breast milk is about 4-6% of calories, and babies need more protein than anyone else - as a percentage of total calories!
      Another fact is that by eating raw, you are consuming raw protein which is not denatured by heat and therefore digestible. Hence, chances are that someone eating cooked proteins will need more than someone eating raw!
      Hope that helps!

    awesome topic! 2 weeks on my fully raw journey so far! I've been raw till 4 for a year! I'm leaning towards 801010 and was wondering about nuts; what are your take on them? do I need to soak or just chop up some raw almonds in my fruit salad is ok? Raisins and dried fruits? Also, avocados? What's ur take? usually eat one with my salad (that I'm not super drawn to like you mention! as I'm thinking about it I'm not necessarily super drawn to eating avo on it own either! hmmmm

    • @sweetnaturalliving
      @sweetnaturalliving  8 років тому +2

      +TheJossan84 I recommend experimenting to learn. My personal experience as well as the science points to keeping the fat below 15 % of calories at most for optimal results.
      I rarely eat nuts as they are difficult to digest usually. If I can get them fairly fresh, I'd eat a little bit. A small handful a week maybe?
      I don't bother with soaking them. We wouldn't do that in the wild. But who knows, it might be better that way.
      I don't enjoy dried fruits, but I eat them now and then in a pinch!
      I love avocados, probably the easiest of all the fatty foods to digest. I probably eat a small one per day on average, landing on about 10-12 % from fat for the day. I eat them by themselves together with a meal of mangoes for example.

    Excellent video! I ate nothing but apples for a few months and greens were something I needed, and enjoyed the taste of, after that period. However I still have some intolerances to them and would much prefer to have a greater variety of fruits in my diet than greens. We do get imported fruit here but my body reacts badly to it. If I lived in the tropics with access to organic tropical foods year round, I think greens and apples would barely exist in my diet. Ultimately, I agree with your sentiment - we need to listen to our bodies and do what's best for us in our climate, and if we can go for tropical fruits then that is ideal, but if not, we can supplement with other foods as needed.

I was wondering what your perspective is on eating 3 meals a day, I personally desire to eat in an unplanned way, in a way where I am listening to my body, so I might eat several times a day with no specific set times of eating. Perhaps I am just not eating enough fruits all in one sitting/meal, but I was wondering if you listen to your body and that's when you decide to eat, and it just so happens to be 3 meals a day with a snack(like I have seen in another one of your videos)? Thanks!

      @sweetnaturalliving  8 років тому

      +Kristin xox When I get hungry, I eat until I'm satisfied...that usually holds me for 3-5 hours, then I eat again. It usually turns out to about 3 meals a day with the occasional snack yes. That being said, I do enjoy at least dinner to be a planned meal for cultural reasons.
      If you're listening to your body, you must find that when you eat, you eat until satisfied no? If you stop before you're full, then there's surely a "mental" reason why?

    From what ive read (and to a certain extent, experienced) with green leafy vegetables, is that they are beneficial for human consumption when used as a mechanical intestinal cleanser. I totally agree with you that fruits are the most perfect food source for humans in terms of raw nutrients and ability to sustain, however, I also believe that before you can make the full transition to frutarianism, using raw leafy vegetables to help better absorb the nutrients from the actual fruits is definitely a plus. I dont know if this is everyones case, but when i eat salads i can look at my poop and see that i dont digest greens fully, but rather they stay somewhat in tact, leading me to believe that they do in fact work as a 'broom' of sorts to help clear out the intestines and colon.

We have found garlic hummus to be a good veggie dip but it's really difficult finding enough creative ways to push raw whole veggies on kids under ten! From what I've been experiencing, depending on the medium/minerals used to grow the greens in, they will most certainly taste appealing when in their raw, original form. There's many vegetables that look very appealing to the eye, however, probably not as lovely as fruit, but, balance yeah? As far as folate, fiber, calcium, iron, and various trace minerals goes... vegetables are superior. Balance. Balance. Balance.
    Nice video, spark the minds.

    • @sweetnaturalliving
      @sweetnaturalliving  8 років тому +2

      +smrfox99 With due respect, but you talk about balance, but yet you seem to be under the impression that MORE of a nutrient is BETTER, whereas we actually just need ENOUGH. Even though vegetables have more minerals per calorie than fruits do, doesn't mean we actually NEED more. That being said, fruit ALONE hits all the official recommendations for folate, calcium, iron and ALL the other minerals actually...

  • @force1164
    @force1164 7 років тому

    I know exactly what you talk about. I am on LFRV for 4th month and everything goes quite well, except the salad thing. Sometimes I feel like chewing grass.. just like a cow. When I eat it with mangoes or grind it with tomatoes, its much better but still it is not something I enjoy very much. What I am wondering about, however, how much are the leafy greens helping our gut flora to thrive. When I started this diet, my digestion went wild. Lot of smelly gas and bloated belly. It was getting better and by the time my gut was cleaning up. Anyway, I sort of felt all this to be better when I ate a head of lettuce a day and even-though my gut and digestion is okay for a while now, I still feel that it works better if I eat lettuce. I wonder whether it is just a feeling, or whether it is just better for detox or what it is.
