I grew up listening to this music. Car trips for hours, drying out in the sun at the neighborhood pool, cleaning the whole house with the family on Saturday mornings. Picnics in the park, building sandcastles at the beach. Neighbors looked out for each other, and we all listened to the same music. It was such a wonderful time period to live in. These songs feel like my childhood.
Wasn't Sail On inspired by Kenny Roger's coming to vist the Commodores while they were in rehearsal? Kenny told them they should make a country western song

I discovered this song about 5 years ago when it played on a "Oldies" radio station. Few songs stop me in my tracks, but I had to tell everyone in the car to be quiet until the song stopped playing. it is a remarkable piece of musicianship! I still listen to it often. I strongly suggest listening to NIGHT SHIFT by the Commodores. Amazing tune!
So true. Even if I do, (sing it alone), it's a tiny little whisper. I'm a lousy singer anyways - but sometimes, just sometimes, I like to think I'm a rockstar.😂✌❤
When I was 16 living in Newport Maine, there was a family from Mass who had a vacation home three houses down. She was 17 and I had never really been with a girl before. I loved the Commodores and we kinda hung out together, kissing, touching and otherwise having fun and the music we were listening to was the Commodores and Foreigner... I haven't heard this for 40 years but if I close my eyes and get a word or two prompt I can sing the lyric.
That's funny. Around that same time I was a kid who was born in Massachusetts and moved up to Dexter and became a life long musician. There was some amazing musical talent in the high schools of a four town area of central Maine. Many you've heard on the radio playing with major acts. I was in Jazz band with Jeff Coffin of Dave Mathews and Bela Fleck. Also a kid who went on to be Buddy Guy's bassist. The Mower brothers of Saint Albans are pro horn players. Crazy.
Commodores are just fantastic! Lionel has such a smooth voice and such a great song writer! My only complaint about this song is, it's not long enough 😎
Lionel had a duet with Country supergroup Alabama called Sweet River Woman in the mid 80s. It was a big hit on both the Country and Pop charts. He was also the first artist to have a hit song on the Country, Pop and Soul charts at the same time.
1979 in the house! Lionel Richie was born & raised in Alabama. Like Ray Charles, Lionel never was afraid to embrace his country roots. He actually appeared on CMT Crossroads, I just can't remember who with.
The Pointer Sisters won a Grammy for country music in the 1970s for their song "Fairytale". Zydeco music is also popular with some of the country audience. Some country artists in the 1970s even did songs with funk, R&B, & disco elements like Ronnie Milsap & Barbara Mandrell. "Lady" by Kenny Rogers and "Southern Nights" by Glenn Campbell got R&B radio airplay.

Thanks for playing this awesome song, I forgot all about it. One of my favorite by the Commodores is a song called "night shift". You should give it a listen when you have the time.
Lionel Ritchie has some country creds, having written the Kenny Rogers' hit "Lady" and his own twangy "Stuck on You." He also released an album called "Tuskegee," which was country-inspired remakes of his own songs with artists like Shania Twain, Willie Nelson, the Rascal Flatts, etc.
Lol. Lionel is from the South. Alabama. He's def country. Lot of his music has country music influences, especially in his solo career.. This song brings such a great feeling. Country and blues are similar in many ways, so the description of the song as a crossroads of the two genres is spot on. I also think it sounds country because of how genuine and chill the performance is. Such a great song and reaction.
I’m well into my 40’s and have been listening to Lionel Richie since I was 6 yrs old (and totally familiar with 70’s music). But I never heard this song until about 6 months ago. And oh yeah, we were surprised back then that a funky soul group like them was actually doing a country song, but it was good! Lionel wrote the song “Lady” for country pop superstar Kenny Rodgers also …
I saw the Commodores sing this song somewhere around 1980. I could immediately see the Lionel Richie was the most talented in the band. He sand this song and Diana Ross came on as a secret guest and they sand "Endless Love." I'll never forget it and you just took me back there, thanks.
I'm so so confused. What did you think Lionel Ritchie did?? Growing up I couldn't go an hour without hearing him on the radio. One of the greatest singers and songwriters ever.
Maybe they just thought that he is Nicole Ritchie's dad. Just a guess. I'm confused also. As you know, we all start with a tabula rasa and Brad and Lex were born too late to have learned about Lionel when they were young, they just know Nicole. At least that's my hypothesis.
Lionel Richie has one of the smoothest singing voices of all time. He has written so many great songs, and many that defy genre. He does have a little twang in his voice at times, being from a small town in Alabama (as I am, also). He soaked up so many musical influences when he was young, and this led to his ability to create music that often crossed genres.
Lionel attended Tuskegee Institute and graduated with a degree in Economics. With The Commodores, he was their primary vocalist and played saxophone (he was in the Tuskegee marching band and is a member of Kappa Kappa Psi).
I love the Commodores, the are fellow Alabamians, being from Tuskegee, Alabama…they met at Tuskegee University! They were funky, r&b, country, etc! Lionel wrote songs for many artists including Kenny Rogers! (I’m from Huntsville, Alabama)!❤❤

'Splice the mainbrace! Baton down the hatches!' While all around the sailors under his command would sing in glorious harmony.

A few years ago at a music ceremony that aired on TV, they had a Commodores/ Lionel Richie tribute played by a country music singer. You guys hit the nail on the head hearing the country music in this song.

He's right, the lyrics are like hey we tried, here's your name back, see ya sugar, I'm lookin for a good time and you. are. not. it. This song brings back so many childhood memories I got chills up and down my arms hearing it just now. Reminds me of when my cousin was a young teen and danced and lip synced to this song using the fireplace hearth as a stage and she had us all cracking up! omg you guys thank you!!
Yeah Lionel Ritchie is a country boy. This song hit #1 on the R&B, Country, and Disco chats. The only group ever to do it. The Commodores were in my top three bands as a boy along with Earth Wind and Fire and The Isleys Brothers. Yeah... I'm old. Well... I'll say blessed enough to have been around to learn for 53 years. Love what you're doing. Keep growing.
There are so many great Commodores and Lionel songs. But I really recommend 'Nightshift' which was their great song after Lionel left the band to go solo.
I’m with you! As an old white dude from the Canadian mountains, I’m thinking, “Listen to these hillbillies!” Ahhhh, but the end…. pulls it up into the sky…♥️. Damn…. I might be buying a Commodores album!
Lionel Ritchie is, IMO, the greatest writer of love songs in the modern pop era. He is tied for first for most number one hits by a singer/songwriter with 8. Among them are "Three Times A Lady", "Still", "Lady", "Endless Love", "Truly", "All Night Long", "Say You, Say Me", and "Hello". Other very big hits for him were "Sail On", "You Are", "My Love", "Easy", "Stuck On You", "Penny Lover", "Ballerina Girl", and "Just To Be Close To You"
The boys from Alabama! I got to meet them and hang out back stage with them in 1980. That country twang is real. When not singing lead Lionel was the saxophone player and also played keyboards. The other main songwriter who deserves a lot of credit for the bands success was the guy on drums Walter Orange. Walter sang a bunch of their songs including Brick House
I love this song because it shows how great The Commodores were. They could do multiple styles of music and it was all fantastic.
Yessss!
I mean they wore from Alabama lol so then doing country isn't a shock
the commodores were the BAND in the 70's and early 1980 the Lionel Richie went solo and blew up even bigger.

Commodores really did play a lot of FUNK. You might like "FANCY DANCER" "SLIPPERY WHEN WET" "CEBU" just to name a few.
Ahh yes.. back when songs with meaningful lyrics combined with slow, gentle, and easy listening.. music were not only acceptable but often became some of The biggest hits!❣😁👍 (and this is coming from a die hard Led Zep fan!) Lol! 😉😄
Lionel Ritchie has been one of my favorite singers since I was a kid. I am pretty close to having every bit of his music.
"I'll build the boat, just leave!!" I laughed so hard I spit my tea everywhere. I didn't see that coming. Thanks for posting and sharing. I love your reactions.😃😂😂😃🤗
A few years ago at a music ceremony that aired on TV, they had a Commodores/ Lionel Richie tribute played by a country music singer. You guys hit the nail on the head hearing the country music in this song.
haha I love this reaction. I've known the song for SOOO long that it shocked me to hear Brad's opinion, it's so spot on!!
You gotta do “Oh No” by them. An absolute timeless classic.
Thank you. I have not heard this one in a long long time . Great song
This song is fantastic 👍🏼 the melody and the harmonies are great🔥
There are so many great Commodores and Lionel songs. But I really recommend 'Nightshift' which was their great song after Lionel left the band to go solo.
The LEGENDARY Commodores ❤❤❤❤❤❤
I’m with you! As an old white dude from the Canadian mountains, I’m thinking, “Listen to these hillbillies!”
Ahhhh, but the end…. pulls it up into the sky…♥️. Damn…. I might be buying a Commodores album!
Do!!! 🔥🔥
This does have a country twang to it ....Lionel does have another country music connection ....he wrote lady for Kenny Rogers
I grew up listening to the Commodores on vinyl... this has always been one of my favorites.
Other very big hits for him were "Sail On", "You Are", "My Love", "Easy", "Stuck On You", "Penny Lover", "Ballerina Girl", and "Just To Be Close To You"
Well, do keep in mind, Lionel Richie did write the big hit for Kenny Rogers' "Lady".
Tim McGraw and Lionel Ritchie performed a great duet with "Sail On".
I love seeing Brad rocking with the song he’s feeling it! One my fav artist ever Lionel, smooth operator! 😊
This was the ultimate kick rocks song back in the day.
Their song Stuck on you, also sounded country. Plus Lionel wrote songs for Kenny Rogers.
that outro tho.... goosebumps .... amazing song from the commodores
It sounds country possibly because Lionel Ritchie is from Alabama and grew up listening to country. He did write Lady for Kenny Rogers
My first BIG concert I ever went to was The Commodores in Birmingham, Alabama...with my Mom.
LOL!
Now you’re talkin! Man I love the Commodores! So damn good! Man I miss music like this…
LOL. Lionel was one of the top male singers of the 80s.
First time I heard this song I thought it was a country band. You are not alone Brad.
Song went from country to R&B Easy listening on a dime, great tune!
"this song makes me feel like Texas Roadhouse" 🤣🤣🤣 literally just made my week!
I'm subbing to everything - ya'll are awesome! 🙏🏾
The Commodores were SOOO good.
One of my favorite Commodores songs. It starts out country and evolves into Christopher Cross-like yacht rock. Love the trumpets in that section.
