In terms of influence, I would say John, along with Dylan, were the most influential Lyricists, but Paul has a shout in terms of masterfful musicianship, but in this respect difficullt to isolate anyone within the Beatles, for important musicianship, and you would have to include George Martin in that.If you would pick anyone except Martin, Paul was definitely the best musician in natural talent, therefore probably the most influential "instrumental musician" of all time, With Martin perhaps being the most influential non-instrumental musician. @@Kieop bingo...got to get you into my life as well...it was the bicentennial year in 1976 so where I lived in the city, that whole summer was block parties...I remember those songs being on all the time...my father was a bass player in a 60s band that had a few minor hits in the early 60s...so he always had guys over to jam or music going etc...silly love songs grabbed my attention and I loved when it came on....I actually liked coming up alot to when it came out...his songs are just melody central

I love how Paul sings, " How can I tell you about my loved one" while in the background at the same moment, Linda shows him how to do just that with "I. Love. You."
My favorite thing about Paul and Linda is that when they formed Wings, and started to tour, they didn't want to be separated from their kids and just took them with them on the road. It wasn't common to do that in the early 70's.
It's funny how this song opens with the sound of a machine cranking out love songs, and then launches into a melodic bass line, before bringing in Paul's voice. It's like an amused, "challenge accepted" type response to Lennon's criticism of Paul. I hope John got a laugh out of it. :)
Right on Sg, even though Paul and John were not working together any longer, John criticizing Paul for writing stupid love songs totally inspired Paul to respond. So in a way, they did work together on this. Their chemistry and influence upon each other was unmatched and magical! Even 1000s of miles away.

I understand your point that Paul became more dominant after Rubber Soul, but even when they did not write songs together anymore, they might still contribute a line or edit, and they had a sense of what Beatles song should be. This kept them honest no matter who the main songwriter was. Paul knew that he had John and Paul looking over his shoulder. The songs that Paul wrote for Peter and Gordon were good songs, but not good enough for the Beatles. However, songs like Why Don't We Do It In The Road, Martha My Dear and Rocky Raccoon are almost simple minded, even if they are fun. This is the case with a lot of Paul's songs which have a taste of the British music hall tradition. And some songs are just stupid, like Maxwell's Silver Hammer. Some of Paul's best songs are profoundly sad and melodically beautiful: Eleanor Rigby, Yesterday and Blackbird. They are also essentially solo works or have minimal participation of the other Beatles. But they are still Beatles songs. As a solo artist Paul confirms that he is a brilliant musician, but he doesn't have anyone to caution him from over indulging in twee and simplistic lyrics.

I have to say in my favorite album is revolver and my favorite tracks on revolver are here there and everywhere for no one and Eleanor Rigby. Those are the most dominant tracks on the album, hands down along with George's tax man. I really liked she said she said and Tomorrow never knows especially Ringo's drumming but those songs don't compare to what Paul wrote. Paul's dancehall music influence comes from his old man, but I like that stuff a lot I love when I'm 64,I love honey pie and my favorite ,your mother should know. Also their musical contributions to each other's songs was magic. Between his work as a member of the Beatles and the prolific songwriting team of Lennon/McCartney, his work as a solo artist and with his band Wings, Sir Paul McCartney is going to leave behind a body of work that can be rivaled by no one. My favorite song from Paul's Wings era. Makes me sad to see all the shots of him and his late wife Linda in that video. We saw Paul live at Lambeau Field in Green Bay, Wisconsin, a few summers ago and it was awesome. He played for 3 hours without a break.

Just think - it was a chance to see a BEATLE in a live show, the first chance for many since the Beatles stopped touring 10 years before in 1966 and the first chance for all the new fans that came along in the 70s and inherited a love for the Beatles and embraced Wings as well. This was the big hit song that summer, and the live album they made from this tour - Wings over America - is a classic!
This was the FIRST song request I ever made to the local radio station way back when. . . I think I was 8. I requested it for a girl in my class at school. She heard it on the radio and the next day at school she slugged me in the arm and followed me around for a month. She was also my first kiss. Thank You for the memories !!
Wings had some good songs, but never an album that could touch a Beatles album from "Rubber Soul" to Abbey Road" (start to finish, no filler, no 'average'). Even my friends who love Wings refer to their run as "Paul's pothead phase." There was some genius and some "Meh!" on every Wings album.
This songs demonstrates exactly what Paul's genius was. He was always a master of the lovely melody add some nice noncontroversial lyrics, and the some brilliant arrangement that puts it all together into an infectious song thats hard not to like.
I'm amazed how they almost never comment on Bass lines of songs! The Bass is incredible in this song! I've seen them react to ZEPPELIN, RUSH, THE POLICE, THE KNACK, MOTOWN and especially YES without one word mentioned.
the concert footage is from Wings concert in the old Seattle Kingdome. I was there and it was a great show. You can catch it on AXS TV from time to time. It's on UA-cam. He also made a live album there also called "Wings Over America."
I was in elementary school when this came out. My older sister and I were obsessed with it. We had an old jug, or bottle for the whistle sound, a chain, and some other object that I can’t recall - and we recreated that rhythmic sound at the beginning, lol.

After the Beatles split, Paul & John kinda a feud, where they wrote songs about each other… John had commented that since the split all McCartney wrote was drivel & silly love songs. So Paul wrote this song in response

Great song. The young man playing electric guitar, Jimmy McCulloch, passed away at aged 26...just a few short years after this concert. A real talent that helped make up Wings.

I always thought that this represents some of Sir Paul's best work. It stands on it's own. And that he plays that insane bass line effortlessly while singing lead is a a real testament to his incredible talent!

Give drummer Ringo Starr some love Check out his songs "Photograph", Your Sixteen" and "The No No Song" which is a really, really fun song. These were all big hits back in the early seventies. To a large extent, The Beatles collectively and individually wrote the soundtrack to my life. They do share that with Pink Floyd and Led Zepplin. This was a response to John telling Paul he only wrote silly love songs.
That big tire on the freeway you see is near Detroit MI, about a hour or so from my house.....they took a photo of the group standing right in front of it, in 1976 while on the big USA tour called Wings Over America. a live album of some of those performances was done with same title. And a movie. Paul McCartney and Wings was a big group of the 1970's that started in about 1971-72 and evolved over 2 years or so into a big selling act and hit singles record. Denny Laine, formerly of the original Moody Blues stayed with them to the end when others kept coming and going. He deserves more credit than he gets for his loyalty and musicianship and singing. Paul's Wife also was an asset as background singer for the wings sound, and steady simple keyboard playing. She was a non musician before she met and a married Paul. I never understood the negative bull crap from critics about her knowing full well she had no background in playing and singing and stepped up the the plate, learned from Paul, and did what she could and it didn't hurt anybody but the meathead critics.
A lot of younger people have no idea how huge Wings was. I was young & I remember that they were the biggest band in the world. The Wings Over America tour was so huge it changed the way concert tickets were printed & sold because of the massive forging due to high demand. Every show sold out 2-3 times. This and Band on the Run are my fav Wings songs. I loved an interview with Sir Paul about 10 years ago where he said Wings was the band he always wanted & he was grateful to The Beatles for giving him the freedom to make the music he wanted to make.

This album spent 6 months in my cars tape deck. Wings had 10 number 1 songs over their time together. This was one of them. Let Em in, Wino Junko, and Beware my Love are also songs to check out from this album. Great Reaction!
In the mid 70s Paul McCartney made wings hugely successful. In the 70s there was zeppelin, the stones, and wings was very close behind them. Paul McCartney is an absolute musical genius. He can actually play pretty much every instrument and on some wings albums play drums guitar piano bass etc. McCartney was far more critical to the Beatles success than John Lennon because he was also heavily involved in the arrangements and the studio genius of their music. They made wings hugely successful and then of course had a huge solo career.

The video was scenes from Paul's "Wings Over America" tour from 1976. It had been 10 years since Paul had played in America with The Beatles. He was nervous as to how he would be accepted. He sold out everywhere they played. I was at the second leg of this tour, in Houston, and it was a night I will remember the rest of my life.

I think that both your interpretations are exactly right. Some people love being in love and want to tell the whole world about it. And no matter how disappointed they might be by past bad relationships, people don't lose hope that they might find love again. Paul McCartney wrote a silly love song. He was quite good at that. But the whimsy is also beautifully expressed.
Paul & the Beatles always ended their song, & did not just fade out. I love that about them. “That girl” was his wife Linda Eastman, from the Eastman-Kodak family.
Paul wrote this specifically for the bass and said it had been a while since he had a strong bass dominant song. The lady on stage was his wife he survived, Linda McCartney (nee Eastman) whom were never apart much. It was said the time apart added up to merely a week's time in their 25 plus years of marriage until she succumbed to cancer. That's worthy of a Silly Love Song :)

The history of The Beatles is full of interesting trivia. This is one of my favorites. I smile every time Paul hits the chorus.
It was also meant as a stab at music critics who said the same things. Paul was starting being considered anti-hip by that time.

My favorite song from Paul's Wings era. Makes me sad to see all the shots of him and his late wife Linda in that video. We saw Paul live at Lambeau Field in Green Bay, Wisconsin, a few summers ago and it was awesome. He played for 3 hours without a break.
It made me happy to see them make more lasting memories in the video. Paul and Linda had something extremely special. They make me smile.
How on earth do you manage to listen to this song and not mention that AWESOME bassline?!?!

when this song first came out I didn't really like it... but now that several decades have passed, I have come to think of it as the ultimate song of defiance against people who want to drag us into a world of never ending political and social negativity...."here I go again!!!".. he's basically telling the naysayers to f-off.

Paul and Wings toured all over the United States in 1976, the bicentennial year, and the tour was HUGE! Just think - it was a chance to see a BEATLE in a live show, the first chance for many since the Beatles stopped touring 10 years before in 1966 and the first chance for all the new fans that came along in the 70s and inherited a love for the Beatles and embraced Wings as well. This was the big hit song that summer, and the live album they made from this tour - Wings over America - is a classic!

This was the FIRST song request I ever made to the local radio station way back when. . . I think I was 8.
I requested it for a girl in my class at school. She heard it on the radio and the next day at school she slugged me in the arm and followed me around for a month. She was also my first kiss.

Being a bass player this is one of my favorite basslines so melodic.
I don't know if there is such a thing as a happy bass but Paul seems to find a way to make his bass guitar play happy notes.

I almost love Wings more than The Beatles!
I thought I was the only one who felt that way.
Wings had some good songs, but never an album that could touch a Beatles album from "Rubber Soul" to Abbey Road" (start to finish, no filler, no 'average'). Even my friends who love Wings refer to their run as "Paul's pothead phase." There was some genius and some "Meh!" on every Wings album.
WINGS were only about 1/4 as good as the Beatles! 🤩

This songs demonstrates exactly what Paul's genius was. He was always a master of the lovely melody add some nice noncontroversial lyrics, and the some brilliant arrangement that puts it all together into an infectious song thats hard not to like.

The Bass is incredible in this song! I've seen them react to ZEPPELIN, RUSH, THE POLICE, THE KNACK, MOTOWN and especially YES without one word mentioned.

the concert footage is from Wings concert in the old Seattle Kingdome. I was there and it was a great show. You can catch it on AXS TV from time to time. It's on UA-cam. He also made a live album there also called "Wings Over America."

I was in elementary school when this came out. My older sister and I were obsessed with it. We had an old jug, or bottle for the whistle sound, a chain, and some other object that I can’t recall - and we recreated that rhythmic sound at the beginning, lol.

After the Beatles split, Paul & John kinda a feud, where they wrote songs about each other… John had commented that since the split all McCartney wrote was drivel & silly love songs. So Paul wrote this song in response

The blonde haired woman in the video is his wife and the kids, their children. Linda was also a musical collaborator and member of his band. Next you should check out My Love.
Great song. The young man playing electric guitar, Jimmy McCulloch, passed away at aged 26...just a few short years after this concert. A real talent that helped make up Wings.

That big tire on the freeway you see is near Detroit MI, about a hour or so from my house.....they took a photo of the group standing right in front of it, in 1976 while on the big USA tour called Wings Over America. a live album of some of those performances was done with same title. And a movie. Paul McCartney and Wings was a big group of the 1970's that started in about 1971-72 and evolved over 2 years or so into a big selling act and hit singles record. Denny Laine, formerly of the original Moody Blues stayed with them to the end when others kept coming and going. He deserves more credit than he gets for his loyalty and musicianship and singing. Paul's Wife also was an asset as background singer for the wings sound, and steady simple keyboard playing. She was a non musician before she met and a married Paul. I never understood the negative bull crap from critics about her knowing full well she had no background in playing and singing and stepped up the the plate, learned from Paul, and did what she could and it didn't hurt anybody but the meathead critics.

A lot of younger people have no idea how huge Wings was. I was young & I remember that they were the biggest band in the world. The Wings Over America tour was so huge it changed the way concert tickets were printed & sold because of the massive forging due to high demand. Every show sold out 2-3 times. This and Band on the Run are my fav Wings songs. I loved an interview with Sir Paul about 10 years ago where he said Wings was the band he always wanted & he was grateful to The Beatles for giving him the freedom to make the music he wanted to make.

I think that one of the simplest yet most profound lyrical lines in a pop song is found in the song’s Bridge: “Love doesn’t come in a minute, sometimes it doesn’t come at all, I only know that when I’m in it…it isn’t silly, love isn’t silly, love isn’t silly at all”.
This album spent 6 months in my cars tape deck. Wings had 10 number 1 songs over their time together. This was one of them. Let Em in, Wino Junko, and Beware my Love are also songs to check out from this album. Great Reaction!

In the mid 70s Paul McCartney made wings hugely successful. In the 70s there was zeppelin, the stones, and wings was very close behind them. Paul McCartney is an absolute musical genius. He can actually play pretty much every instrument and on some wings albums play drums guitar piano bass etc. McCartney was far more critical to the Beatles success than John Lennon because he was also heavily involved in the arrangements and the studio genius of their music. They made wings hugely successful and then of course had a huge solo career.

The video was scenes from Paul's "Wings Over America" tour from 1976. It had been 10 years since Paul had played in America with The Beatles. He was nervous as to how he would be accepted. He sold out everywhere they played. I was at the second leg of this tour, in Houston, and it was a night I will remember the rest of my life.

It’s like your listening to the song in The Upside Down. And that’s never more abudently clear than the quirky almost five minute guitar solo before the first note is sung. I think that both your interpretations are exactly right. Some people love being in love and want to tell the whole world about it. And no matter how disappointed they might be by past bad relationships, people don't lose hope that they might find love again. Paul McCartney wrote a silly love song. He was quite good at that. But the whimsy is also beautifully expressed.

Paul wrote this specifically for the bass and said it had been a while since he had a strong bass dominant song. The lady on stage was his wife he survived, Linda McCartney (nee Eastman) whom were never apart much. It was said the time apart added up to merely a week's time in their 25 plus years of marriage until she succumbed to cancer. That's worthy of a Silly Love Song :)
