    Hello ! I'm a french clubfitter & clubmaker. i have built lots of STERLING irons for very different players, from low single digit to beginners. RH and LH. Men and women alike.
    I just wanted to inform the golfers on something that they are never been told about the STERLINGs in particular, and the clubmakers in general.
    STERLINGs (Tom WISHON) are a component brand, meaning : as a clubmaker, when I fit for these clubs, I am going to order ONLY the heads at a specific weight, loft, lie angle. I can fit the golfer with ANY shaft in the world (endless possibilities !). I will make sure these shafts are the BEST FIT for him/her. And I will also order ANY grip he/she wants to complement the set.
    Also, I have advised some golfers to just go with the longer irons : 4,5,6 and 7. This is possible because I can order EACH HEAD separately.
    Thirdly, I can fine tune the length of the clubs : it is not "8 iron length" fits for all. It is just the most common sense.
    For example, I have built a STERLINGs set for a tall man who wanted all his irons the length of a 6 iron (that was HIS choice) : to do so, I had to ask the guys @ WISHON in the UK to HAND PICK the heads to a specific weight to be able to build a set like that.
    I hope this helps.
    Regards from France

      Think of this, have you fitted the tall man with an all 6 iron length set or an 8 iron length set that +1", its the same.

      To the club maker
      I have the Streling iron and I've been fitted by a club maker
      They are great clubs best I ever hit
      I have problems with the 4 iron and told the club maker about this
      He put a flat edge on the 4 iron and it's not flat could you check this out to see if your 4 iron is the same
      Thanks
      Steve

      This is interesting Arnaud. I'm pretty OK with my W to 8i but i start having consistency issues with the 7, 6, 5 and 4. Maybe it would be a good thing to try these four clubs and see if they will work for me. Thanks for the heads up.

    I switched to 1 length irons a couple of months ago. Mine are from 1 Iron Golf who have been making these for the past 20 years. From 3 iron to Lob wedge, all the same length. I wish I had done this years ago. I am much more consistent in hitting center of club face and my distances have increased about 10 yds over my old set of Apex irons.

    I really like your idea of LW-9i being the same length. I often feel out of the groove trying to hit full swings with the short wedges.

    I switched to one length irons from Cobra at the beginning of this season. It has revolutionized my iron play. I really am enjoying the same set-up and stance with all the irons in my bag. I am now waiting for Cobra to come out with one length hybrids and woods. haha

  • @per_growth
    @per_growth 6 років тому

    I've already purchased my Sterling One Length irons and am waiting for them to arrive. After all the reviews - I'm convinced enough to invest some cash in order to answer "WHAT IF??". I do wonder though, if there is really a significant improvement in ease of use and consistency - why aren't the people who play for a living, actually switch to these (save for Bryson D)? I understand they are already consistent enough with VLIs, but why not increase your advantage? Anyway, thanks for the review Shawn - you are one of the few people I really listen to in UA-cam. Great content and great insight as always. More power!

      The reason the pros don't use them is that they have decades of practice / 20,000+ hours of practice with variable length. For them to switch to one length would take months, and seriously risk their income and rankings.

    This is awesome I'm glad you got your hands on a set. I've been playing them for over a year and even though I'm a scratch golfer it's improved my game even more. Especially as I'm becoming more and more busy it's hard to find time to practice. I don't have to practice nearly as much and I'm enjoying the game even more. Great review.

      Btw, what has your experience been with the long irons Kourtney?

    • @kourt2469
      @kourt2469 7 років тому

      Shawn Clement I saw immediate improvement in my long irons. My miss used be a a big draw or hook with my 4 and 5 irons or an overcorrected block. In a year of playing these I've actually never hooked a long iron yet. I only play the 5-gw. I don't elevate their 19 degree 4 iron enough to be playable for me but I keep it incase I play windy conditions and need a low stinger off the tee. I prefer the looks of my traditional sw and lw but I play those at 36 inches and the sterling sat 36.5 so there isn't a big change in length. I basically look at my irons as a bunch of 8 irons that go different distances. I actually hit these longer than my titleist ap2s in a club to club comparison but the sterling do have stronger lofts so I'd say loft for loft comparison they are very similar in distance.

    • @per_growth
      @per_growth 6 років тому

      Kourtney are you still using them a year after this post? I recently purchased a set and waiting to try them out. I'm really curious to see if it will improve my game (7 hcap). I'm currently playing PXG0311 first gen and I spent a fortune on them. If the Sterlings really do give me that much more consistency and confidence - then it would be a shame to let my PXG's go - but I guess that's a good problem to have. :-)
      Do you find you have to swing harder or manipulate with your hands as you move to the 6 and 5 irons (w/ that 8i shaft length)? This is the one area that is concerning to me. Thanks

      @@per_growth How did you get along with the single length?

  • @MMcG25
    @MMcG25 5 років тому

    I have a set of these in Lefty - 5 through PW. The 9 iron and PW go so HIGH when struck well. I kind of like that for me as I can get the ball to stop on the greens when struck well. 8 iron is a high ball flight too which I like. Where I'm struggling a little is the 5 through 7 Iron - I think it is a mental thing where I'm trying to swing too hard vs. letting the club head design Mr. Wishon built into these irons do the work for me. With Practice I hope I can get them dialed in a bit more. It also take a little getting used to the "ping" sound of the 5,6,7 irons.
    It may be possible that I'll keep 8 through PW (my set came used without a gap wedge) in my bag, but use more traditional 5,6,7 Irons, along with a 52 degree wedge and a 60 degree wedge for lofted shots and bunker shots.
    When struck well - the Wishon Sterlings do feel good I have to admit! And the one length takes out one less thing to worry about and that's ball position (for the most part).

    • @ircunning2697
      @ircunning2697 4 роки тому

      Hey Mark. I have them too and love them. I swing everything like a PW and have had good results with the long irons, though I don't use a 4 iron. When I practice, I take all the clubs out of the bag and stand them up in a mixed order. Then I purposely don't look at the number when I hit them. This way I don't swing them differently. Sure, you can tell there is a difference between the lofts, but it helps to avoid swinging hard with the "long irons." Give it a shot, it certainly can't hurt.

    I'm beginner, I've started playing golf for 5 months.I have been using Sterling SLI for about 1 month, fitting done with Golfnswing (Paris, France). I play with irons 6-PW-GA-SW and wood 5. And this is definitely easier, I have to deal with only 2 swing plans. Bottom line ? I think I would be no more able to go back to variable length clubs !

      You can thank Bryson Deschambeau for opening that door! I actually played with a set of Tommy Armour EQLs in 1989 where they were all 6 iron length; that was a bit too long and there were no tour players playing with them...

      Thanks Mike! Always try the clubs before you buy; I had no trouble finding the sweet spot on them; so that is why I asked Jaacob to offer you to purchase one club to your specs and then try it; then if it feels good and you like the look and all, you can take the plunge! Very sound system!

  • @jordy46682
    @jordy46682 7 років тому +3

    Surely the point here is to try the "difficult" club option? You already know you like your 8 / 7 iron and feel comfortable with those - so the comparison to try the club should be on the club you find most difficult to hit - 4 / 5 iron? That way you have the option to really see and feel the difference? I can pick up literally any standard 8 iron and hit them the same and so can most average golfers, BUT, I would be very interested to see how it compares to my 4 iron! :) Just a thought...

    • @caymanking1842

    I game the Mizuno MP-5 blades but could struggle with the 4 iron (I'm kinda opposite to you - I have a long body and arms and short legs) so I have blended in the Cobra Forged One 4, 5 and 6 irons into the Mizunos. Quite a similar look and feel so I don't feel like I'm hitting a different set but I feel much more confident with my setup over the ball which has translated into much better results with my long irons.

    since you know Jaacob, have you ever thought about comparing your swing to Mike Austins? I know he was using different terminology than you but checking his videos with the skeleton suit his movements resemble yours a lot (from my amateur point of view).

    • @golflessons
      @golflessons  7 років тому +1

      Some very good nuggets in the Austin System; the thing that really makes the difference is what task do we put ourselves on to have the moves and positions find us?? too many sports scientists; 2 of which are coming to our facility in early August, Gabriele Wulf and Rebecca Lewthwaite, have proven that us thinking about our positions and body parts is very counter productive! If Mike Austin would have had access to this information, many of his teachings would have been different.

    • @thomasgolft
      @thomasgolft 7 років тому

      so you are saying, he was focusing more on shifting his weight rather than what you call "swinging to the target"? what I remember was he emphasised on the importance of using the momentum and an effortless movement, that's why I was comparing it to you. after all, maybe skully is Mike without his suit :)))

  • @DrMacCandless
    @DrMacCandless 7 років тому +1

    I'll try to ask a simple question on a complex subject. If you choke down on you longer irons (lower lofts) à la Sergio García, would you achieve better contact or just lose distance?

    • @golflessons
      @golflessons  7 років тому

      All depends on the person! Several players grip down with increase of distance; I am not one of them; what feels best and gets you the right feel is what you want. Taller with short arms-me- is very different than shorter with longer arms; Anthony Kim was one who could smash it like the best of them and gripped down.

    • @kourt2469
      @kourt2469 7 років тому

      Ian MacCandless it depends. If right now you miss hit the club at full length, then choke up and hit them solid, you most likely will hit it further but also more accurate. But if you already hit it solid and then choke up 1/2 inch and hit it solid, you may lose 1-3 yards but not much more.

Il y a encore moins d'efforts à fournir qu'avec des fers traditionnels. Les plans de swing sont simplifiés. La régularité vient rapidement même pour les joueurs du dimanche que nous sommes. As a hybrid user from 5 to 3 "iron" I have managed to achieve a fairly consistent 12 yard gap between clubs. If I go the single length route from 6 to pitching wedge will I be able to maintain that gapping. Whist I can grip down on my 5 hybrid to reduce the carry from 175 to 168 yards I struggle to reduce the carry any further. Your thoughts would be welcome. I like the concept of single length and lie as it reduces the number of variables in the swing however I would find it burdensome if my gapping was thrown out by using them.

    • @golflessons
      @golflessons  7 років тому

      How far do you hit the 6 iron? Check the specs as you may want to put your 5 iron in the bag as the specs of the hybrids may be stronger than you think or the irons weaker...

    Question - with the same length shaft - did that impact your distances throughout your set let’s say your PW to 3 it

    • @golflessons
      @golflessons  6 років тому

      Hey Peter;
      Wedges gain a bit too much height because of the extra length and I do lose some on the long irons; but this is me! It can be that the once a week player who also practices just once per week will gain a bit of consistency by setting up more consistently throughout the set;

      There is the law of fulcrum and moment in physics that determines the force to propel the distance of the ball. A short length iron will also reduce the force that drives the distance of the ball. For the pros, that reduction of force due to short fulcrum and moment will matter most.

      OK, but what matters is not the head speed, but the ball speed. Agreed ? And you forget that, on the Sterling sinle length irons sets, the low lofted irons club face have a higher COR face than the the high lofted ones. This COR difference is about 5 %, and the lenght difference between a traditional 5 iron, for instance, and an 8 iron is 1.5 inch, i.e, 4.11 %. So, the ball speed is close to the same with a traditional 35" length 5 iron and a 36.5"one. And when you consider that an average golfer will strike a 36.5" iron much better than a 38", the shorter one will very often go farther than the longer one.

    Shawn can you test the Wishon EQ1-NX single length clubs please ( hollow body irons).
    "Try before you buy" with single length concept is difficult to achieve. One club doesn't give you a feel for the concept of all your irons being exactly the same. You might be able to pick up an older cheap set second hand to try for a few months before you purchase new Sterlings, Cobras etc. If you are in OZ or N.Z. have a look at www.milfordgolf.com.au SL-7 irons. I have used Cobra F7 and F9 for 2 years, but now use the SL-7 with graphite shafts and I am scoring even better. Best part is they cost $580 Au, about 50 % the price of Cobras. Buy a set and use them for 3 months, if you don't like them they sell easily on Facebook/ Ebay.
    For lower swing speed players ( like me/ mid 70 mph with irons) be aware of the strong loft on the Cobra clubs. You may be better served using the Cobra SL hybrids 19, 21/22, 24/ 25 ( they changed loft F to .F9 models) instead of the 4,5,6 irons to get decent gapping distances. The hybrids are very good as iron replacements.

      I've been a Sterling user for the past 2y and I've also purchased the EQ1NX hoping that this will be an upgrade. My Sterlings have reduced my handicap by 2 strokes (I am now at 5.2 index).
      I got them in the exact same shaft and grip.
      SADLY, the look of the irons are just horrendous. Calling them chunky would be an understatement. The feel of the Sterlings is a hundred times better. The EQ1s are heavier (so maybe best to have your fitter consider this for swing weight issues). If you are an above ave golfer - the EQ1s might feel off as they really look like SGIs. I got them on line and have never actually seen the clubs prior to their arrival.
      I've only used them a few times on the range and have since kept them in storage - they never even got to experience a fairway round.

The longest iron they had was a 5 iron and for me I did not notice the Cobra SL 5 going any less then my current 5....I just felt as though my set up was the same so I was hitting the sweet spot....It does take a little time hitting the wedges to get use to the 7 iron length, but after 10-15 balls I liked them. Going to switch to SL probably next season. My current irons are only two years old.

      I just had a hit with the cobra's This is what I found. carbon is 5-8y longer than steel.
      Carbon feels softer, is lighter and give 2+mph more than steel. A lot to like about carbon, that's what I'm getting .
      I compared my old taylormade R7'.
      my swing speed was 85mph on steel and 88pmh on carbon.
      TM R7= 5iron ave carry is 180y
      Cobra F7= 5iron ave carry was 188y.
      I was very interested in the cobra because I also have a single length set called the 1iron clubs. had them for 3-4yrs now, and found I lose
      7y on my 6iron, (compared to my R7')
      8y on my 5 iron
      10y on my 4 iron .
      So I'm super happy Cobra's are even longer than my TM'.
      my PW is 122y, cobra PW is 150+ Crazy long. carry more wedges and ditch the 4 iron is the way to go. Try the Cobra's Mate. you'll b impressed.( and that's not the forged set, which I didn't like because is was the smaller head)

    Come on now Shawn. You get up there and hit a 4 iron. The ball cones right back to the exact spot you started from. Then you hit a sand wedge and the ball comes right back to where you started from? Did you think we didn't notice that. LOL.

    • @FredCDobbs-er4qd
      @FredCDobbs-er4qd 6 років тому

      Happens all the time when hitting into a net or fabric mesh. Think of it like this. If the ball hits near the top of the fabric, that fabric doesn't give much because it is fastened up there. The 4 iron hits much lower and the cloth does give there. So the wedge comes off hot and the 4 iron comes off soft. Then there is spin and at what angles the different shots come off of the net. Besides, he doesn't need to use any silliness. He is very accurate on the videos where you are watching behind and on the target line. He hits within inches of where he is aiming and that net is about 30 feet away.

      if you have built up muscle memory over many years of playing it may be a psychological drawback to try to tell your body to use a 8iron swing when you know the club you pulled from the bag is not an 8 iron. For a highhandycap golfer like myself i see it as a chance to concentrate on getting good at one swing not many.
