    I played Sterling for 4 years. What I found was my distance increased as I warmed up to the single length concept. I found the Sterlings were comparable to my traditional clubs. Recently, I switched to the new EQ1-NX from Wishon. They're 1/2 club longer. The lower-loft irons fly higher, the higher-loft irons and wedges fly lower, and the offset is both reduced (2 degrees) and standardized through the set.
    I will NEVER return to traditional clubs. Ever.

  • @EDTHEWATERGUY
    @EDTHEWATERGUY 8 років тому +37

    You can't compare the distances in these to your set.You have to reset your yardages.
    All that matters is the gapping.
    Also the looks cannot be manipulated too much because the weights are the same as well as the higher lofted irons being forged and the lower lofted irons are high cor.

      EDTHEWATERGUY I agree, definitely have to make some minor concessions here. I think what he meant by "looks" though is more cosmetic than anything. They do look a bit cheesy like something you'd maybe find at Walmart especially when compared to Cobras single head design lol. In the end all that matters (or at least should matter) are results.

      Also Rick, what my club fitter did for me (just got them this week) I got the Cobra's in 2 tiers. 4-7i in single length, 8-G in Variable length. Good compromise I'm hoping!

    Ive been gaming the SI since last september and these clubs are incredible and consistent. Wishon truly did a great job with the material and design to give off a consistent feel. The gap wedge was the hardest club to get used to but once it was dialed in it's been a confidence builder. Im a 2 HNDP by the way

    I play off a 5 hcp and went to these last year. Absolutely love them! I hit greens from 215 out all day long. Only down side is I had to find a new ball. The 8,9, &P would balloon with the ProV1. However, I have a very high ball flight. Between ball and shaft changes you can get your desired flight. I would recommend these irons to any caliber player.

    Rick review Ping i200: Carry 7 iron "great numbers" "further than I expected" = 168 yards!! Rick review Sterling: Carry 7 iron "...closer to an 8 iron distance" "still slightly short of that 7 mark carry" =170 yards. Come on Rick...be the same in your opinion of the clubs performance! These Sterling irons have gone about the tech differently than what cobra has done. That’s why Rick said he felt like it was springy in the face. Where cobra plays with the swing weights in their one length irons to keep the distances consistent with normal length iron distances, the method used with the sterling irons was to change the springiness of the faces. So instead of all the faces being the same, they make the lower lofted clubs more springy and gradually get less springy as you go up in loft. That’s why the first thing rick said was something about how springy it felt off the face when he started hitting them. This is the method they went with to try to keep the consistent distances you would have if you used normal length irons instead of messing with the swing weights like what cobra does. I’ve seen a couple different guys review these and they all mentioned the springiness felt in the lower lofted irons and also some really liked the sound they give as a result of this springiness. Sounds almost like a bit of a hybrid sound. Either way though I guess this method worked pretty well because even though he didn’t really get the ball flight he wants with the 5 iron, all his distances were very consistent. Rick couldn’t get the height out of the longer irons that he would normally like to see with his own normal length irons, but I guess you’d expect that when you’re hitting a club that’s 5 iron loft but the shaft is from an 8 iron. It’s not gonna go as high with the much shorter shaft.

    Bought a set of Pine Meadow Single Length Irons after getting back into golf very recently (3 weeks) after an 11 year layoff. Was never more than a 10 handicapper. After working on a stack tilt swing with these irons these last 3 weeks, I shot an even par 36 on the back 9 of my local. I had 5 birdie putts.

    Lol Richard! Stop fighting the results bubba. That's the most consistent I've ever seen you hit any irons. I bet you would beat your score on your challenge program with those irons. You're like the person who goes into a golf store looking for a driver and finds one that they hit amazing. The best they've ever hit it, but then doesn't buy it because it's a much higher loft and they are much too macho for such a high lofted club. Get out of your head mate. Cheers Rick. Another great vlog

      I often play in Europe in windy conditions with these very clubs. My solution? I use a Nippon 125 Modus 3 Pro Shafts. I get the mid high trajectory that I need and the distances and dispersion are just perfect for me. On super windy days, go up one club and swing easy. Just like with any other iron a golfer ever owned.

    So how high do your "normal" 5 iron and gap wedge go. Didn't even try to hit a knock down wedge. Said the same thing about height of 5 iron in cobra review and there was a 2 yard difference in heights of the variable length and one length. Look at the numbers??? Get rob on these babies too. And the F7 cobras??

    I love your reviews Rick but this was an odd one to be honest. First off you're really criticizing the looks of these irons yet call the TM M2 irons "sexy"?! No these aren't the best looking irons ever made but I've seen these in person and they look great. Second, the results don't lie. You were crazy consistent with the yardages, which I think delivers exactly what every golfer wants from their irons. I get it that the longer irons are lower flighted for you but I'd love to see you test these on the course for a more comprehensive review. Don't get me wrong, I'm not 100% convinced that the single length irons are for everyone but it felt like you were sort of against these from the start of the video.

      He's been gaming the Ping iBlades for a while now but I get what you're saying. Both those and the Hogans are sharp looking irons. But, like you said, if you'd spend more than 15 minutes with the Sterlings and pay more attention to the results than the topline of the golf club I think most people would change their perspective.

    Rick you're hitting these as straight and consistent as I've ever seen you hit irons. I think you should definitely consider putting these in the bag. What's stopping you having the 5-PW, then having standard wedges and a normal top of the bag? Consistency is the number one thing for irons in my book.

  • @halconnen1483
    @halconnen1483 4 роки тому +1

    I really like these reviews. Normally it would seem a single length set would, for every loss with lower lofted faces matched with mid-length shafts or higher lofted faces matched with mid-length shafts, come with gains to trade off with. The lower lofted faces would be outperform in headwinds and the higher lofted clubs would out perform in tailwinds. However as they seem to maintain differentiation of distance using swing weighting, the gains I am referring to might be attenuated though the weaknesses would be as well. A weakness that is augmented is what Rick points out with the GW if he had a headwind (and conversely longer clubs with tailwind).
    At any rate, it seems their PW, GW, SW, and LB are great for minumum roll when faced with a tight pin position 80-130 yards away.

      Andy Bibby that is true for traditional clubs, but isnt the point of single length clubs is so that theres not many variables with setup? Theyre all the same length for a reason, one reason is to set up the same for all clubs?

      @andybibby4091 8 років тому +1

      Bryan Trinh Hi Bryan whilst i dont disagree with your comment and having tested these myself i could only come to the conclusion that ball position definitely needed to be altered in the longer irons to maximise AOA and launch angle for my impact conditions, i found no negativety in moving ball position at all in longer irons, it is my opinion that the majority of club golfers wont benefit from having ball in the same position

    Good review, to be fair these irons aren't really meant for a player of your ability. I think most of us would be very happy with the results we would get with these irons. In addition Wishon offers you a few choices of length and more importantly also lets you choose the swing weight which is a really nice custom fitting option that I don't think I've ever seen offered. There is some real thought and innovation here to make up for the single length. Yes the Gap Wedge spin is very high because it has to be to offset the longer shaft and create an appropriate distance Gap just like the 5 iron flights a bit lower to again make up for the shorter shaft.
    The real hurdle for all single length irons is getting over the look and feel at address, this would be a really great set for someone just starting golf for sure but i also believe after some time anyone could get used to these. Keep up the good work Rick.

  • @bettendorfjordan
    @bettendorfjordan 8 років тому +1

    I wonder if one-length irons would be great for a mid to upper handicap player? I personally struggle big time hitting 4/5 irons (tend to hit very fat shots) but 7 on down is more my sweet spot with clubs. So having all my irons be the length of say a 7 or 8 iron, might be something that could really benefit me. I can understand the higher iron clubs (4/5) coming out without much height and causing issues stopping on greens, but the benefits of having 1 swing and being a more consistent striker because of the length would outweigh the flight I would think.

    looking forward to the comparison of these to the cobras!
    also - not sure Rick is the target market for these clubs. I think Rob is more of their audience. Rick is a really good player who can do loads of stuff with the golf ball. Rob is a good player but he struggles both with consistency and accuracy; I think that is what these are meant to help with.
    When are you going to get some Edel one length in? Those are at the very top range of the one length sets and I'm very curious how they've manage to overcome the "height" issues...

  • @brianwright5466
    @brianwright5466 8 років тому

    Loved the review Rick! You hit these clubs amazingly well! I have two questions though:
    You seemed to not like the flight of the five iron. I hear what you're saying, but when hitting a 200 yard shot it's going to be tough for any club to stop the ball on a dime. You still spun it at 4000 rpm, which isn't far off from what you'd normally expect, correct? We're these numbers all that far off from your gaming set?
    Taking all numbers out of the equation, with the exception of carry, and just looking at the results you hit these wonderfully. Your yardages were super consistent and you were hitting it on target. Why don't you focus a bit more on the results and not the numbers?
    Finally, I agree 100% that the GW flight you displayed is not playable in the wind. I would love to see how well you could've delighted these irons. Could you incorporate that into reviews? I know that most of the time it's more down to the golfer and not the equipment but for this set, being as unique as they are, it would've been interesting to see how adaptable they are in that regard.
    Love the videos Rick! You do an awesome job.
    Cheers mate!

    • @kourt2469
      @kourt2469 7 років тому +2

      Brian Wright I don't get the argument that the gw isn't playable in the wine. Um what wedge is playable in the wind? They all launch high because of the higher loft. If your hitting into the wind you should club down or choke up to launch lower which you would do with any other club into the wind. I guess I just think that argument can be applied to any club into the wind and you'd have to manipulate your shot no matter the length of the club in your hand.

    Rick you gotta understand the concept here. Please don't get so wrapped up with the fact that they're coming out low. You're hitting down 7 degrees! You can't blame the clubs. Hi Rick, Can you please consider testing the One Iron Gold Blackstone irons? 3-LW. They also have woods, Driver and now a putter. Would love to see you review them. The science behind them makes sense. They have a book you can download to explain the science behind the clubs.

    So to answer your question on higher height in long irons yes you put it slightly forward
    Works most time in single plane swing aspect and can take height off by be ongoing further back for the short irons lower the height
    Single length takes little to get use to for few weeks or a month
    Changing ball position isn’t to much of problem you still have less setups than standard js
    But great striking dude !! was amazing consistency 👏

    Sorry Rick but I do have to agree with a lot of the other comments. You hit all those shots with three different clubs really well, good accuracy with excellent consistent distances but you can't seem to go against your pre conceived thoughts on how they would perform. Excellent video as always I do love your club reviews would love to try these out.

    It's all ifs and buts, them irons are straight off the rack.
    To make it a true review of one length irons Rick should go for a fitting to see if a one length set could be made the way he wants.
    Rick could try any off the rack set and something wouldn't be to his liking until he had it tweaked by a fitter.....

    Bet you'd get that 5I distance if you used the 7I length as opposed to the 8I length, don't you think? Yardage spreads, and dispersion is terrific these irons. Very nice review!

    Who cares if your distances are different as long as they work for you. If you’re more consistent but losing 5-10 yards let’s go.

    Rick, really like the review. I am with you on this and its clear that it isnt easy to make single lengths that work for everyone. Knowing what we know about weight placement to manipulate launch, I wonder if they need to go more extreme in their weighting at the bottom to get the right launch characteristics. Problem with that, the better players wont want to bag the lower irons.

    Why does Rick want these to have the same length as his normal, over strong lofted clubs? The problem we have now is that the lofts have gotten stronger as a marketing gimmick, forcing golfers to carry more wedges. I'd much rather have weaker lofts and not have to carry 4 wedges. I don't need to carry my 9 iron 150 yards because then I need clubs that carry 140, 130, 120, 110, 100 with a full swing. I don't want to have to use half and 3/4 swings to compensate. I'd rather a full swing with the right club.

    I just hit my best 9 holes with my Cobra Forged One Lengths, admittedly my putting was great. The question is, was the putting hot because my approaches were consistently closer? I did leave the 4 iron out of the bag and used my 4h instead.

      Love the idea of a 2 length irons, 2-6 (4 iron length) in a hollow face design & 7-gap (9 iron length) in a CB. Vary the CoR so the longer distance irons (#2 & #7) are more springy and the shorter distance irons (#6 & gap) are less springy, this would lessen the variation in apex height/decent angle.
      Dropping the fairway woods and hybrids would reduce the lengths/swings you need to practice down to just four: the driver, long irons, short irons and wedge. That is fewer than the 1 length irons, where you would still need to practice 3 or 4 lengths in the hybrids & woods.

      You can do that with the cobra one length forged set.
      Just buy the 4-7 in one length (blue) and the rest in standard length (orange).
      The lofts of the two different Cobra sets are the same so you do not need any further loft adjustments either.

    This seems like a fair review and im not sure about all the negative comments about the review. People are not always going like a clubs that are released all the time hence why people choose different clubs from each other. What i do find odd is that Rick says that he is not happy with the length of distances with these clubs and cobras single length but when he tried the callaway apex irons he said that they were too long with the distances, so only this point i find odd as this seems to contradict what most golfers want when they buy clubs that they want the extra distance with accuracy. I appreciate that its a new concept and would like to see Rob potter's view on these. Hope to see a comparison with cobra and edel single length irons. I do like the idea of the three tier system and think someone should jump on that idea.

    I agree with the 3 different lengths of shafts. Maybe 6 iron length for 3,4,5--- 7 iron length for 6,7,8 and 9 iron length for 9,PW and GW.

    Although I don't disagree with much that has been said so far, to those who are saying this is the most consistent you've seen Rick hit irons haven't taken into account that Rick's golf game itself is improving. Check out his recent videos - he's been hitting much better overall.
    It still might be true that these make him more consistent, but you can't just simply compare it to his past review videos.

    These irons were very consistent on distance, spin, launch angle, etc. The five iron flight was a bit low, but it was stopping pretty quickly on the green anyway and you de-loft your irons more than most golfers. The gap wedge only went 1 yard higher peak height than the 7 iron, so it doesn't seem to be going too high based on the actual data. Overall, with these irons being only 8 iron length they would probably work better for most amateur golfers than off-the-shelf OEM clubs from the major manufacturers.

    Can you test these clubs around the greens? I'd think I would struggle with the shorter shots, little lobs, distance control with shorter swings. I would'nt mind losing distance for straightness but I can't imagine trying a 70 yard lob with a seven iron shaft. It's the game within 100 yards that would put me off one length shafts.

    • @BloodySoup74

      I would just keep my regular vokey 60* then have the rest of the SL set. That 60* is everything I want 100 yards and in. Including my chipping. Maybe have my 56* too. A gap and a pw would be fine in 8 iron length.

  • @drytadpole2197

    I really like the idea of same length irons. I hit my short irons much better than my long irons and a large part of it is their length. I feel like my short irons have a perfect length and mentally, I don't feel like its possible to hit the ball chunky.
