These are some of the most creative spell card designs I've ever seen! Simplistic and creative but fun and challenging! Your spell card concepts are some of the best out there! I like how you don't fall prey to the same trap other touhou fangame makers fall into. They just have this notion in their heads that "hurr durr more bullets means better spell cards hurrrrr" which is honestly missing the point of spell cards entirely! Spell cards where meant to give a fair fight, to give the weaker species (ie. Human like Reimu and Marisa) a legitimate fighting chance against powerful youkai like Yukari and Junko. Their minds somehow equate bullet density and impossibility of capturing the spell card to beauty, when there's so much more factors that make a spell card design beautiful! I think Junko might actually be a stab at these fangame makers. ZUN showed them that it's not always the number of bullets and difficulty that makes a spell card pretty :) Junko has one of the lowest bullet count per spell in the game, and yet she's also one of the most difficult and interesting bosses! Your spell card design would fit perfectly in a legitimate ZUN-made touhou game :)
An interesting point! Yes one personal pet peeve of mine is when I see fangames that just try to pack in more and more bullets onto a pattern without any consideration for what's "fun" -- only what's difficult. I myself fell victim to that pitfall when I first started scripting. If you'll look at some of my earliest works for instance, you'll see how back then I prioritized over making stuff that's "hurr SO DENSE" just for the sake of being super hard. Nowadays I really admire the works I see where scripters do something unique with bullet patterns to force the player to move outside their comfort zone. Granted, I still have issues with ZUN's danmaku for Junko in that it was a bit TOO simple, to the point of apparent laziness. Though I don't blame him, it seems he succumbed to fatigue while developing LoLK and didn't have the time to better elaborate on more interesting danmaku for Junko while keeping with the theme of "simplicity." My goal with this script was to show you can keep it simple while still making things interesting and fun. And thanks! :) Though I could never make a full-length fangame in a million years because I don't have the attention span nor the creativity to come up with that much material. I mean look at how long it took me to get this script out, haaaah.
(late much on my part) He was also going out of his comfort zone to create Junko; fans had complained that his danmaku was too design-focused instead of actually difficult. Hence with his LoLK final boss he had been pressured into making a boss that was simple and difficult. Without playtesters, Junko PTSD was born. On the contrary, you have quite a wacky style in regards to your danmaku and have the freedom to do so- this won't kill anyone's run by being taken off guard. With his works he also has to worry about making a feasible boss for an official game; a final boss, no less. It could have been as wacky as yours for a final boss due to pointdevice but he also had to take Legacy into account. Also when pressured into something you generally feel obliged to meet expectations, hence creative freedom is less prominent. However, in HSiFS he did flex a lot of creativity with both the final and extra stages, especially with the backgrounds. A show of his ability to make simple danmaku creative and fun would be Anarchy Bullet Hell in my opinion due to taking a simple attack and putting his own unique twist on it. Personally, I believe Junko was just a middle finger to people trying to have tougher danmaku instead of him being able to enjoy developing a boss character. Alcohol can sure put you in a piss poor mood.
What I always emphasize admiring about your work are the clever gimmicks you come up with, but working with Junko's "pure danmaku" style in such a captivating way really calls for an emphasis on your raw patterning skill. At the same time, of course your cleverness also continues to shine -- the way you can take a simple theme like "rings" and squeeze every last bit of creative interpretation out of it... Man, the three-dimensional illusion at 5:00 was my favorite. The aesthetic of 10:40 really struck me too. And the last survival spell really instantly communicated the PC-98 throwback vibe in an interesting way. ...JESUS CHRIST, THOUGH, THAT BONUS ENDING. The concept of danganmaku punishments is now among my favorite things.
My original idea was to try to code a whole cutscene in "3D" with the characters as paper cutouts, mimicking the style of a Danganronpa execution. I know it CAN be done, I've seen other scripters do really cool things with 3D camera control in Danmakufu. But sadly I'm not that skilled in it yet, but more importantly than that it would've eaten up a lot of time... I just wanted to get this script out there before I dragged it on any longer, so I settled for a simpler "punishment." Simplicity is (Touhou)Junko's M.O. after all~
Pain in its truest form. True Gengetsu Raep Tiem would be literally impossible, and was probably made to deter people from timing the attack out. I can see why he made it into pure streaming, but slowing it slightly (to make it actually possible) and making it random would probably have been a more faithful (and more rage-inducing) way to go about it.
Holy shit AJS, this has to be one of your most best scripts ever, despite it being Junko. The patterns are incredible and pure. These scripts never fail to please me.
This is pure genius. Junko surely purified your brain to make there beautiful patters... Oh, o no... Oh god, Junko, why... Why are those patterns so... Hellishly pure?!
Thank you for making this! Junko’s one of my favourite touhou characters, and i feel like her gimmick is pretty underutilized. The pattern at 0:45 is probably one of my favourite patterns i’ve seen made for her, it follows her strict rules but still manages to look extremely cool!
At first I was like "I'm not gonna watch 20 god damn minutes of this" but... that was absolutely mesmerizing. Christ man, the "rotate blue bullets and red bullets" pattern was INSANE
Nice script. That was really interesting though the part where you control the danmaku to not hit Reimu. That's the most interesting and unique mechanism that I've ever seen. Then again you always were good at making unique and interesting scripts. Awesome work! Okay on second thought, the ring part was also pretty killer and I think I like that even more. OMG, that bonus content. I love you AJS! That was brilliant! A+++++
This makes Junko seem REALLY pissed off for some reason. She's just speeding things up. It makes me feel tense and hyped up. We really are fighting the mother of gods.
This was a ride from start to finish, but That ending got me good, I was expecting Junko to tell Enoshima to destroy the moon, but NOPE, "THEN PERISH" I cracked up so much
This script is all sorts of amazing. Using only the basics, the diversity of the patterns here is breathtaking. And, the gimmicks, oh my goodness, the gimmicks, especially the pattern where you move the bullets instead of the player and the bullet-frog jump, among multiple others, I've never ever seen those anywhere to date, even if, extremely rarely. It's very tricky to navigate through these gimmicky attacks on the first encounter (got my ass handed on the frog-jump attack, arrived with 13 hits, hobbled out with 37), but I love the concepts of these. Would be interesting to see those implemented into a classical boss fight.
Thank you~ Yes, one of the challenges I've realized is that while working on gimmicky spells like that, I get used to it to the point that I forget how difficult it can be to grasp for first-time players. In the case of this script though, I don't exactly intend you to do your best on your first run of course. That's why I implemented a system to let you skip whichever attacks you want to get to the ones you want to practice on subsequent runs. And in fact, this is why I give you unlimited time and free reign to move about the rings when the "frogger" attack first begins -- to give you some time to come to grips with the movement controls before it starts throwing bullets your way.
But where's the fun in that? :T Besides, the goal of this gauntlet is to get hit as few times as possible. And not all of the frogger phases are that bad... Though I've found that it's best to dodge normally, and then if you get hit by a tricky wave to just press forward a few rings to take advantage of s.
I... Well played my dude... The danmaku was so creative, the gimmick cards fit... You made Gengetsu's timeout mess into an aimed meme!!! The bonus content, where do I start... The punishment was hilarious, Junko getting destroyed was cathartic... I love it. And I'm pretty sure Junko would as well
This is really cool! For using only rings, this has some of the most creative patterns I've seen. If I were to nitpick a bit, the Gengetsu phase feels pretty unnecessary. It doesn't fit in well and is fairly underwhelming (literally just streaming). The penultimate attack was awesome though, kinda reminded me of Frogger, actually. I'd love to see the concept expanded upon.
Yeah, I was heavily debating whether or not to leave the Gengetsu phase in or to just keep it separate as bonus content. But I kinda wanted a "flashy finale", and I figured what better way than to pay homage to THE PUREST ATTACK OF ALL (that, and I was proud to have managed to musically sync the attack... ;w;)
Touhou Pro: *In a Crowd of people* I need to get outta here. *Somehow gets out of the Crowd extremely fast* Touhou Pro's Friend: WHERE IS HE? WHY ARE THERE SO MANY PEOPLE HERE? *takes 10 minutes to get out of the Crowd* Oh, There you are how did you get here so fast? There's alotta people there. Touhou Pro: *_Skills._*
I find it hilarious how I recently got a friend into Touhou, who had more experience with Danganronpa, made a Junko joke and then I find this video I am glad I saw this, though I wish it was done on Lunatic difficulty
Amazing. I was worried that, judging from the name and the first 2 attacks, this would turn into Mokou's「Countless Death」, which is considerably boring. I'm glad I was wrong. You are creative as always, especially the survivals! The idea of controlling the bullets instead of your own character is greatly executed, and the other survival spell reminds me of the frog crossing the road game. Obviously, not every pattern has a wow factor, but some of them are really interesting, like the flower at 2:40. Also, I find some attacks hurting my eyes and brain, particularly the ones that involve bullets "slithering" like 4:30, but hey, they are cool! The only one I find it weird is the bubble attack at 6:40. Why is the bubble bigger as the attack progresses? I think that makes the spell easier when it should become more and more difficult. My favorite attack would be that Rape Time out of nowhere, followed by the 4:30 hesitating bullets. Edit: Forgot to add that it was a very slight let down that the rape time was a streaming.
The bubble attack gets bigger because she adds more bullets in with each wave (up to a certain limit), so I needed to increase the bubble size to accommodate. This attack was actually REALLY hard to balance because with the way i designed it, you might occasionally get walled because the RNG hates you. The best way I could find to reduce the chance of cheap-shotting was to increase the bubble even more than I originally had planned. But trust me when I say it's still a very tricky attack~
I'm in tears. I'm so happy to see you posted something and especially something this entertaining. And I know exactly what the last song is. I have it downloaded but I can't find the original video either.
Okay, I JUST NOW got the reference at Junko's last spellcard (13:53-ish). It's Gengetsu's fucking timeout attack from LLS. Can't believe I didn't recognize it sooner! Still, I think fits in pretty well with Junko's other attacks considering a lot of them involve deadly rings/circles and whatnot.
After some searching, I was able to find the last song, though, there are some sound effects. It's called "ジョーカー・ジュンコ ~ 永遠の純化". ua-cam.com/video/oon8H939bp0/v-deo.html
Nice find! Yeah it seems the original video I got the song from is gone now. I can only wonder if COOL&CREATE is actually starting to crack down on videos of their more recent songs?
15:48 _ohhhhhhhh_ I actually was confused about these double names a while ago, so it's nice they're being made into a joke (I wanted to know touhou junko's name, but thought it wasn't junko, because daganrompa junko already had that name)
Things Junko likes: Circles, red and blue bullets, micrododging, PAIN
"Pixel-Perfect Micrododging RNG bullshit"
She also likes Raep time!
Don't forget purple bullets (although it's a mix between red and blue bullets...)
She also likes purple, orange, red and blue flame-like bullets
Makes sense, in lore she doesn’t really care about making her abilities look beautiful, she just wants to fucking kill you
Pure, solid, unadulterated PAIN
You know what I find funniest?
One of Junko's closing spells genuinely resembles Raep Tiem.
Wow, this script looks really serious
_hits the __13:53__ mark_
... I forgot this was AJS
Hey, it’s still a bit serious......

Piers Redfield everything you said here is correct, but wasn't Junko a divine spirit or something?
Love your profile pic ♡
I love this thread.
19:14 Junko: THEN PERISH

Too bad,no god is capable of saving her when it's junko

*gasp* IT’s her?!
Also, at 9:16 ... In Soviet Russia, you don't evade bullets, bullets evade you xD
but still hit
9:14 in Soviet Russia, you don't control Reimu, Reimu controls danmaku (sadly not you)
In Soviet Russia, danmaku dodges you.
13:55 Is she really doing it?
14:45 She is really doing it!!! Raep Time!!
(Hears music) This sounds familiar...
(Sees wings) Wait...
(Sees pattern) Could it be?
(Sleeping Terror part of song starts) RAEP TIME?
Josh29 Imagine if it wasn’t just streaming, but random like the original. XD

not gonna lie I was expecting a class trial with the way things were going
Way more interesting than the actual Junko fight lmao. Loved the creativity in these patterns.
Also that end part was a nice touch.
Yeah, this is much better than the original Junko fight.
11:39 It's like Youkai "Blazing Wheel" And Akitsu Nezu's nonspells had a child

Junko and Junko Enoshima.
Was a lingering thought in my brain.
And I just saw how that would go.
Pure Danmaku for inflicting Pure Despair.

Amazing job - especially the rotating bullets and the 3 stage ring ascension spell. That one was brilliant!

Jimmy Tan The frogger attack is easy if you just abuse s. Just mash up and down quick enough, and you should only take one hit per cycle.
But where's the fun in that? :T Besides, the goal of this gauntlet is to get hit as few times as possible. And not all of the frogger phases are that bad... Though I've found that it's best to dodge normally, and then if you get hit by a tricky wave to just press forward a few rings to take advantage of s.
The prophecy has come to pass! Junko vs. Junko Enoshima, this is an awesome script!

THIS IS ONE OF THE BEST THINGS I'VE WATCHED IN MY LIFE, THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THIS FUCKING MASTERPIECE!!!!!!!
16:24 Ooohh, missed a chance to call it "Danmakuma"
This script had so many twists and interesting ideas for just using rings. Probably one of the most creative works of yours so far!
19:17 R.I.P Junko
Well She
*PERISHED*
That second-last spell was phenomenal.
It effectively cast Reimu in the role of an electron, bound by the rules of quantum mechanics within its atom!
Junko stole the Precious Gengetsu Theme
You know shit's real when Reimu's first reaction is to GTFO. Enoshima never stood a chance.
Reimu's first reaction is always GTFO though
I find it hilarious how I recently got a friend into Touhou, who had more experience with Danganronpa, made a Junko joke and then I find this video
I am glad I saw this, though I wish it was done on Lunatic difficulty
Damn I looove this script. They are all very fitting for junko and the survival at around 9:50 is really cool.
I see. I guess it can be said that, your generosity is expressed through that bubble. xD
19:16
junko enoshima can't even hope to dodge that since her hitbox is the size of her character. how unfortunate.
Just when you thought the ring/circle patterns we're easy
Props to you man, your scripts are always incredible and the spell cards are always really creative and neat to see and try to dodge ourselves.
That survival 10 minutes in... What a brainmelter!
Damn Reimu's too good for punishments.
The level is insane
idk why i feel that this battle looks more fair that the one from touhou 15, you awesome dude, i hope you make more in the future .
Wellll you are never gonna believe what time it is maaaan.
Oh wow, this is really impressive, absolutely love the one where you control the bullets.
You just gave me claustrophobia
This is the reason why I subbed. Amazing work!
12:00 that spell is like Orin's Yokai Blazing Wheel on steroids dude
Lol, the second when Junko said greetings and ad instantly played
Wow, Ms. Enoshima's 15 leagues behind you, at _least._ The punishment time didn't even *scratch* you.
14:07 RAEP TIEM
I'm in tears. I'm so happy to see you posted something and especially something this entertaining. And I know exactly what the last song is. I have it downloaded but I can't find the original video either.
Glad I found you. Will be watching and downloading your scripts now. Thanks.
6:35 I was thinking of "Bottled Purity" when I saw this.
EVERLASTING PURITY
but in a bottle
contains 100% concentrated purity.
14:08 i see the reference, i feel old
Gengetsu on minimal
The only script Sonic would ever like.
19:13 that voice byte is familiar. Flowey right?
That surprise boss thought!
It be here
16:20 more like bullet talk combat
Although it's actually called machine gun talk or something
this is truly a hard boss

JUNKO GIRL CHILL
After some searching, I was able to find the last song, though, there are some sound effects.
It's called "ジョーカー・ジュンコ ~ 永遠の純化".
ua-cam.com/video/oon8H939bp0/v-deo.html
Nice find! Yeah it seems the original video I got the song from is gone now. I can only wonder if COOL&CREATE is actually starting to crack down on videos of their more recent songs?
I can't believe someone was crazy enough to do this.
PURE DESPAIR
11:42 Orin flashbacks.
13:55 GENGETSU???
15:38 No---- NOT THAT JUNKO...
16:40 Komachi flashbacks???
for some reason i keep imagining this one saying "dodge my rings" in a new york accent
16:34 that title may actually apply, at least in works of fiction (solely because who puts a shrine maiden in their story? It's pretty specific)
15:48 _ohhhhhhhh_
I actually was confused about these double names a while ago, so it's nice they're being made into a joke
(I wanted to know touhou junko's name, but thought it wasn't junko, because daganrompa junko already had that name)
1:12 Totally not a Miko second spell reference.
because this is the most obvious reference in this script :^)
