I was given a small Monstera and I've been worried about it eventually getting super huge. Now I know that I can do this and keep the size under control! Thank you so much for your videos. I'm watching them all and learning so much! I'm sure my plants will be grateful.
Great video. I have a monstera that hasn't grown much over the last few years, but luckily it's still alive. I will repot using a similar soil mix as yours and place it under better lighting conditions. Keep the videos coming.
What a blessing you are to the plant community Jeff.. your experiments and adventures are fantastic! As a monstera grower I appreciate the fine job you did on your gorgeous monstera 🪴 Air layering must be the way to go.. I have a doubled moss pole with 2 monsteras on it that I care for, for my husband. Next time it needs attention I plan on air layering-that means 3 roots systems it seems 🙃😄. How long did the air layer take, and what season/time of year was it started if you don’t mind me asking? Thanks so much and have a lovely day! 🪴🌿🪴🌿🪴
Thanks so much for the kind words. I had it rooting for probably a month and then I noticed it was getting a new leaf. I just left it alone until that leaf emerged because I didn't want to disturb it. It was probably rooting for about 2 months which is longer than I would normally let it go LOL
I don't remember the exact amount of time, but around 2 months. I didn't anticipate it going that long, but it decided to push out a leaf. I just left it alone until the leaf fully emerged
Great video ❤ Jeff, what does it mean when a plant won’t grow? I have a couple like that, they have heat, lots of lights, new soil, fertilizer, water… they are just stagnant and I thought they would start growing in the spring but nope! I even moved them to see if they would prefer another location and no success. Thanks for your great videos. Here in Ottawa we are in high 38-39 degrees, it’s really hot ❤
I had one monster like this as well.... Didn't do anything for what seemed like a year. Could eventually put out a new leaf. It sounds like you're doing everything correct so I would say just continue to give it time. A lot of times it may seem like it's not doing anything but beneath the soil is where the action is happening lol. It's probably developing a root system large enough to sustain the next leaf as well Do you have a light meter ? What type of light is it getting natural or artificial?
@@EverythingPlants I have many grow lights. Some plants I found prefer less lights so I move them around but others just won’t grow. They are mainly alocasias, that’s probably why, they are finicky plants 🤣
Amazing, thanks for sharing this. I finally have a single stem monstera plant that's doing well, after trying several other times. Mine is about 4ft tall and getting bigger and bigger leaves. No inner perforations yet though.
Thanks for this one! I’ve been thinking about cutting my monstera up and I’m just a little nervous. This is very helpful! What do you do with the bottom rooted plant? My little townhouse can’t handle more than one full sized monstera…
Yes. I did have footage of this process specifically for this video.....but when it came to making the video, I couldn't find the video footage. I'm guessing the I mistakenly deleted it 😭
Thanks for the step by step, esp. using up partial bags of substrate. Sorry if I missed these factoids: (1) did you deliberately let the moss bag dry out? and (2) when did you do the air layering = approx. #weeks to get a rootball that size? Thanking you as always, Jeff
The moss was watered the night before this video, so it wasn't dry.....it was just packed with roots. It was rooting in this bag for about 2 months. Normally I wouldn't like it go that long, but when I wanted to do the video I saw the new leaf emerging and didn't want to do anything until it developed.
Wow this was the most amazing step by step process for cutting a monstera thankyouuuu ❣️I haven’t done the moss yet but was going to propagate my well my daughter n laws that I saved lol we were talking about it not definitely feel more confident 🤗off to the moss store ✌🏻🇨🇦
I’m looking back and thank for also the stray leaf cut I have one and I’m never sure that that’s the way to go but feel better now and wow those leaves are huge one day I hope !
Thanks for watching Helen. For those leaves you can usually somewhat contain them by tying them up..... This one just didn't fit so I decided to cut it off. Thanks so much for watching!
That’s a gorgeous plant thanks for sharing. My monstera freaked and about died, but of course I had to save a few pieces to try and propagate it. So here I am celebrating a 2” hole which is the only split in my four little leaves 😊 and there you are with your MONSTER plant. 🪴
@EverythingPlants okay thank you so much I love your channel btw, do you have any idea about the time they will grow back from a left stem like that and also if the size of the stem affect the results ?
Are the aerial roots always coming from the back? So when my aerial roots are on the side or front, it means my plant is potted the wrong way and the leaves just turned into the direction of the light source over time?
They alternate at the back with each node......one node will have an aerial on the left and the next node will have it on the right side. And yes....for monstera aerial roots of they are facing forward then it backwards. Do you have IG??? I can send you a video if you want
completely off topic but i see a huge ring of fire on your table; how has your experience been with it? is it relatively low maintenance? i have one coming in. thanks in advance!
Hey! So far it's been really easy. Whenever I see a new leaf starting to unfurl, I always spray or mist it so it doesn't get stuck or rip. Otherwise that's it! Good luck with yours!
@EverythingPlants We bought 2 very sad dying Ring of Fires from Home Depot (which I talked the guy into selling me for a reduced price 😈) they are doing so much better now! Would love to see a video on them too!
Sorry to hear. Looks okay on my end. Sometimes you might have to change your settings for higher resolution. I have this issue sometimes when I view videos on my cell phone. I click the settings icon and pick the higher resolution setting for clear videos
I love your no nonsense videos!
Loved seeing your helpers 🐶
😊 thank you
That monstera is insane!
It kind of exploded this year

Thanks for enduring the heat to show us your process! It was very helpful.
Haha....it was a real struggle 😂
Great job. You inspired me to do the same for my monsteras.
Good luck and let me know how it goes!
I like the way you cut off the aerial roots and redirect them into the soil. Much cleaner look.
Yes....it works out great!
What a big job! Thank you for the tips for success and another great video showing another beautiful plant of yours. 😊
Thanks for watching!

I'm trying haha
What a nice demonstration ! Thanks for the great info, Jeff👍
Thanks for watching!
Great video. I am amazed that the leaves did not burn as there were times where they were in direct sunlight.
Very brief periods. It's doing great since the repot
It does look very pretty.
Thanks!
Nicely done Jeff! How long did the air-layering take to grow such a big root system? Thanks for sharing Jeff!

Great job .. what did you do with the bottom stem ?!
For this one I was actually going to give it away but I forgot it outside and it got cooked in the heat.... So it's in the compost now
Great video ❤

How long did it take to get those rots from airlayering?
Very good demo. I'd they're a video before this showing what and how to do the root growing in that plastic bag?

How long did you have that spagnam moss on the stem? I mean to get that many of the roots.
I'm honestly not sure....guessing about 5-6 weeks
