Jeff: Im done with trailing plants!!
Also Jeff: Im adding more cuttings to my trailing plant to make it fuller😂
Hahaha....I'm not buying anymore though. I have to save this baby
I don’t let mine get super bushy like this for this reason. I shower all my plants when I water them now, and by keeping them less bushy (but not bare) it’s helped tremendously
Hi Mechelle how are you doing today 😊
Get the predatory mite mixture of mites. You can keep your plants free of spider mites, thrips and other pests. The mixture is great so you get different types of mites that prefer different types of pests as their favorite meal.
If you have an active infestation get the adult mites and then sachets of eggs that will hatch on a staggered timeframe. Loving these and I use nematodes for fungus gnats. Works like a charm. I wish I had done it sooner instead of wasting SO MUCH $$$ on mosquito bits, peroxide, systemic etc. none of them worked half as well.
That’s a great idea thank you. I am going to try that. Where can one buy these mite mixtures?
Do they work with mealy bugs? I've been told they don't which why I myself have not gone that route.
@@ChristyD97 I’ve never had mealy bugs so never looked into them. Check natures good guys their website will tell you what predators work for every pest. I’m sure they have something. I have an extensive booklet they send with orders. If I find it tonight I’ll post what works
@@rhodealexandre6583 I’ve purchased from natures good guys and……. I forget the other business it begins with K. Just search predatory mites for sale. I wasn’t sure at first how I’d feel about them. After you release them it’s rare to ever see them again. They hide in the plants and come out at night. I started out with nematodes “predatory wormies”first and was absolutely amazed how much better they worked than all the other “remedies” I tried.
That punch in the gut sound effect, when you made the first cut, I felt that. I’m sorry you had to cut all of that beautiful growth. I’m watching and learning from you, and I hope I can catch those little *%&! when they come in. Thank you for sharing your strategies for salvaging plants. Currently I’m dealing with other little pests, including a juvenile feline who did so much damage that I had to chop my philodendron brasil.
I love seeing your brasil at the end of the video. Despite the chopping, she is still gorgeous!
Hope your Brasil recovers nicely. Thanks for sharing Jeff!
Hi Carol how are you doing today
Where are you from?
I lost my Brasil to a pest issue a few years back. I haven't had the courage to try again and buy another Brasil because it was so devastating 😂. Also I didn't realize Canada doesn't allow use of systemic pesticides! Here's to your Brasil's health 🥂
It's not a banned substance that I can see (it once used to be) but no one imports it
well its not banned here but it should be , its killing the good insect as well
Jeff I hope it works but I’ve heard thrips are hard to get rid of. If you win the battle, please keep us posted.
Oh I've had thrips before and it is what it is haha
Thrips seem especially bad this year.
So far, since the spring, I’ve lost a 30 yr old Ponytail Palm, 5 assorted vining philodendrons, and a few other miscellaneous plants.
I’m trying to keep a couple vines in water only, to end the thrips growth cycle , spraying plants down with water, and have tried various insecticides. (Including Capt Jacks bug brew…☹️)
Right now, I’m using a mixture of water and diatomaceous earth that I spray on….once it dries it seems to be working, but the leaves all look blotchy from the DE…..
What a way to live!
In all my years as a plant mom, I can’t remember this kind of struggle, and I see lots of people on social media with the same issues….☹️
I can relate to your frustration, it’s very sad to feel like you’re in a losing battle with these little varmints.
It’s very sad to lose a beloved plant too!
I hope you are successful in beating those thrips!
I don't stress about them....just cut off infected leaves, treat as best as you can and ENJOY THE PLANTS LOL
@@EverythingPlants Yes, I agree….lol
That’s about where I’m at now too ! 😊
I’ve battled with thrips for at least two-three years now. I went from 130 houseplants down to 40 in a relatively short period of time. Integrated pest management seems to be the only approach that’s helping. It can get pricey, but compared to what I have invested in my plants, it seems to be worth it. It looks like you might also have echinothrips (aka impatiens thrips) in which case green lacewing larvae and swirski mites are the way to go. The lacewings target adult thrips while the mites target the egg, larval, and pupal stages.
I'm daaling with thrips too. I am using systemic, though. I wouldn't be able to bring myself to put those new brasil babies in with that infected plant! 😅 I'd have to put them in a pot all by themselves! I hope this new stuff you're trying works for you. I know pests are just a part of plant parenthood , but it is so aggravating and exhausting dealing with thrips! 😢
Haha....either they survive or they don't. The strong will survive
Thank you for sharing beautiful and amazing plants lovely collection beautiful lovely
I use beneficial nematodes from NemaKnights. Takes care of the fungus gnats, thrips and a bunch more. They come in little capsules that you shake into your pots. Very convenient.
I've never seen a thrip on my leafy houseplants here in London ~ I sometimes get an outbreak of scale insect or dreaded root-munching mealy bugs (mainly on succulents/cacti). Although you achieve a tropical microclimate for your amazing plant collection, are thrips a particular pest endemic to the dry Canadian Plains? The issue with your P. Brasil maybe be the congestion of leaves bunching on the shelf (it provides too much of a happy enclosure for thrips). It may not be a logistical possibility, but I wondered if suspending the P. Brasil in a hanging basket from the ceiling may provide more beneficial air circulation through foliage? Also, I wonder if there are pheromone traps available? Keep soldiering on Jeff! ~ just love how you steadily expand your collection, and develop your plant-care techniques :)
Very interesting! I don’t have house plants at the moment since I have 9 cats. My workplace however had a lot and even though I’m a confident gardener outdoors, I need help with the houseplants! Thank you!
Hi Alice how are you doing today
Jeff I really hope that your Brazil is doing fine in the meantime!
The other day I noticed some larvae and two adult thrips on my Brazil. I immediately sprayed it with a systemic insecticide and cut off the damaged leaves. The problem I can't isolate the plant since I don't have much space.... so I sprayed all the neighboring plants as well (I found a thrips on my neon pothos that was nearby).
The next few weeks I will be super paranoid and constantly checking all the plants! LOL!!!
As always thank you for your video!
Hi 👋👋👋 Jeff, Happy New Year 🎉🎉🎉🎉. Hope 2024 finds you Happy, Healthy and Wiser.
Can't wait for new content. Jeff. Hope all is going well 💯!!!!
I have been lucky. I have not yet encountered any thrips, but mealy bugs just love my house and all my trailing plants and many of my hoyas. Mealies seem to love all my trailing pothos plants in particular. So, yes, I'm crying with you:(
Hi Jeff, thanks for your videos... I learn a lot about plants. I have some plants in water, what fertilizer can I use to help them develop quickly and with good foliage? thanks for your help.
Oh me! Brasil and Micans are a couple of my favorite ❤
I take the plant into the tub, wet it thoroughly, just the leaves not the soil, then saturate it with Safer's End All as well as the soil, and put it in a clear plastic bag and leave it in indirect light for a week..this kills everything and the plant is fine
I'll have to try this. Thanks!
I forgot to mention make a few ventilation holes in the bag
@@EverythingPlants I forgot to mention to make some ventilation holes in the bag so you don't get fungus
I get beneficials twice a year. This spring I got 2 types of predator mites and they worked wonders!!
It's New Year...where is our lovely plantman? :)
I am taking January off....I'll be back soon! Love the plantman hahaha
Hope you're keeping well....enjoy your well-deserved break! Looking forward to February, and an update on the botanic garden :)

Hahaaa! I had to rewind when you were chopping your Brazil. I swore I heard it "ooooooh"...😂
Too bad you can not use systemic granules.😢 Your plants are gorgeous!❤
Muito linda essa planta. Ainda não tenho Filodendro Brasil.
Your Brazil is so beautiful…I had a nice one and little by little it disappeared 😢 I saved a tiny cutting that now lives in a tiny pot. Maybe it’s philodendrons in general?..I have a neon or lime green one that seems to be going downhill quickly. It very well could be thrips but I look and look and never see a single bug on the plant. I see yellowing and leaves that are damaged…I’m about to get the snips out and start props in water. I’ve been trying to get systemic granules but can’t get it delivered to my address here in the states either. I have scale on a variegated schleffera and I refuse to give up the fight so I’m spraying and picking them off. I should just toss it but I’m determined and I guess a little crazy. Bugs suck…and for the longest time it was a non issue for me but as you say who knows how they get in.
Hi Jeff, that's not good that you can't get the systemic pest control in Canada. Good luck with all the plants.
It would solve all the issues lol
@@EverythingPlants yes it starts in the soil. Such a shame. Maybe 🤔 there is a natural remedy. Like cinnamon. On the top of the soil. Or putting out containers of apple cider vinegar.
I think I had thrips on my new cebu blue pothos
I chopped and threw away everything that was infected and put the rest in a perlite prop box. When i do maintenence on the box i take it out of the room to check for pests. 😅
Hope it's all good.
@@EverythingPlants Hope so too! Thanks :)
Jeff, where are you? I hope all is well.
I am having the same problems with my monstera deliciosa. The thrips just wont die! And after 2 years of pest free orquids, some of them has gotten that cotton thingy pest. 😢
Pest are exhausting sadly
Hi my friend how are you doing today ❤😊
Hi Jeff, I am sorry you have deal with Thrips. I do not worry too much about most pests but thrips are another level of annoyance
Hi Jeff. After watching this I think my ❤philadendron might have thrips. I kept thinking the yellowing leaves was from overwatering but I'm having second thoughts. Good luck!
Oh no.....do you see any damage on any leaves?
@@EverythingPlants Yes. Besides yellowing I've seen some deformity. Think I'm going to take a much closer look at it! Thanks for the heads up! Have a good week Jeff!
I have one that's huge too. I usually spray her down in the shower and rely on the systemic and occasional insecticidal spray.
Hi my friend how are you doing today ❤😊
@@austinhowland7221 okay. How are you ☺️

This video came exactly 1 day after I found my trailing pothos had been covered in thrips, it’s such a shame 😭
I just discovered thrips on one of my philodendrons on the weekend ☹️ I’m curious to see how this new pesticide works for you. 😀🇨🇦
Hi Linda how are you doing today
did you try dipping it into 10% bleach solution? I do it with bromeliads before they go into my vivarium but not sure if plants can take it. pretty sure something like Philodendron melanochrysum is gonna melt away but thicc leafed plants should take it? whaddaya think?
I saw someone say that if you water Neem oil into the soil, it can actually act like a systemic. I haven’t tried it though. We can get it in Canada for use in making cosmetics etc and often it is in Asian supermarkets. Might be worth a try.
That's what I'm doing with the PureCrop1....as a soil drench. We will see how it goes. Thanks for the Neem suggestion!
Hi, do you mean you add neem oil to your water?
@@sushiegirl yes that’s what they said.
@@EverythingPlants definitely interested in seeing how you like it!
@@Planty-Mandy oh nice, i’ll try that 🙏🥰
I purchased an inexpensive duster to distribute diatomaceous earth, and don't have any pest problems. If you don't use diatomaceous earth, it might be worth trying.
Can I ask what the top three ingredients in your new treatment are? I'm one of those people who enjoy reading labels before I buy a product LOL😅 some of the brand name PetSafe pesticides contain easily found products like lemongrass and Eucalyptus
Soybean oil (10%), corn oil (5%), other ingredients : water, guar gum, glycerin, citric acid, soap, vanillin
@@EverythingPlants lemongrass tea tree and Eucalyptus do some pretty amazing things
I hate seeing all those cuttings going into the trash! I wonder if you or anyone) could take all the cuttings and swish them through soapy water to remove thrips? Or should this actually be done this way because they lay their eggs in the plant’s leaves and the soap might not kill eggs? I’m curious because I’m like you with my brazils.
Thrips lay eggs in the plant tissue so it’s best to get rid of the potentially affected leaves.
You haven’t posted for a while; hope you’re well.
I love Brazils to much to give up on them lol😂
Me too haha
So thrips are the black insects that are crawling on the leaves ? I get confused if the insects are white or black. I seem to always get the black insects issue with hoya crimson princess and pony tail palm, so I no longer buy those plants.
Yes, they're the black Insects :)
I'm from Ottawa and I can buy mosquito bits at my local nursery and systemic granules on Amazon Canada. **edit** sadly they took it out of amazon now I can no longer re-buy :(
Can you send me the link to those Amazon granules through my Instagram account?
@@EverythingPlants will do!
Do you mind sharing the name of the systemic product? I had previously checked Amazon and couldn't find anything. Thanks.
@@rayneboone9696 it's no longer available, I wanted to re-buy but it's no longer in my rebuy, i'm so sad!
Can you soak them in the tub?
To wash off the thrips do you mean? I spray them off with the hose and then treat with an insecticide....I'm hoping the 'haircut' helps it along too
Why don t you post anymore?
I keep getting thrips on McDowell 😭😭 thirdtime now….
I've corresponded with you before and I've been growing and collecting for about 40 years. When I'm backed into a corner with pests I use Ortho home defense spray very lightly and there's no more problems. You can use a spray bottle of water to rinse leaves but you use it very lightly and it has worked very well for me. Let dry before the light is back on. When I use it I don't spray every inch of the plant I just get a bit here and there and it works out
Hi bobbie how are you doing 😊❤
I don’t understand if that plant has got a problem and it’s got a bug in it. Why would you plant baby ones around a plant that sick? Why would you do that?
You'll never be able to completely eradicate a pest issue or be completely pest free. I look over my plants as often as I can..... I spray them down with water and or an insecticidal soap to manage the issue. I can't have a bunch of different plants quarantined in a different area all the time as I have a large collection with limited space. The key is just managing the issue. I don't get stressed out about pests
Bugs suck😢
Yes they do!
