Oh my word, I made this today and used balsamico vinegar and sweet potato as substitutes. I also added fine diced soup veggies ( bag). It was really really delish and this is my fav cold weather comfort food this season🍁🍂🍄🌦️. Thank you so much Albert for sharing this heaven tasting dish. 🤗🇳🇱

My grandfather came over from Spain 🇪🇸 at the turn of the century and my mom grew up with many of the flavors and techniques you use. My grandmother immigrated from Poland 🇵🇱.
Living on a small family farm in western Massachusetts they ate well, if frugally, with dishes like this.
The Depression and WWII generation truly appreciated life and all its ups and downs.
My mom is 94 now and going strong 💪. This stew shall be lunch this weekend 😋

Good evening, this looks so nourishing and hearty. I find even though it is so hot, were are presently experiencing a heat wave in S.A. and man it is hot, thee is talk of rain by Friday, alas, when it is so hot, you feel you have no energy and a good plate of nourishing food just revitalises me!! Well, IMHO you can NEVER go wrong with potatoes, but now that it's October I think pumpkin is a perfect, sweeter and silkier option. Also a different flavor/texture profile, but I bet they'd be equally good in this dish. Both are great -- and now, I'm thinking of trying turnips!

Delicata squash is exquisite, most of the time you can eat it yellow+green-striped skin and all, which makes the chopped pieces look beautiful in your dish. Now I want to try this stew with dumpling squash, which is kind of like delicata, only smaller, rounder and sweeter.

This was amazing! I blended about have of the dish with a blender to give it a creamy texture and then added it back in with the rest of the soup. The pumpkin gives it an extra savory and warm taste. Thank you once again for a terrific recipe :)

I just want to say, I messed up making this and used 5 dl of fluid to cook the stew at the end instead of 5 cups and it was STILL good. That's how good this dish is (the lentils were a bit tough, I admit).

@@emmel4fun Yes, that's a thing -- plus, if you're soaking dry kidney or navy beans overnight and you've had them for a while, or if the water in your area is hard (mineralized), it can't hurt to add a little baking soda to your soaking water, to ensure that the beans will soften when you cook them. Just make sure to rinse them well before making your recipe, so the baking soda won't mess with the other flavors you add.

Never had a pumpkins stew. Usually at Thanksgiving for sweet potatoes I do half and half of sweet potatoes and butternut squash. For this may do 1/3 with pumpkin, butternut squash and sweet potatoes. Of course I always do original recipe first then play around with it. 🤩🤩🤩

Would it be OK to substitute maybe a cup of canned pumpkin? Obviously the consistency would be different, but you should still get the taste? I like the idea of nothing 'fighting' with the lentils.
