    It would seem that Bach's Chacone in D minor was meant to be played by Moran Wasser on this 11 string guitar. This is just perfect.

    Many people will have goosebumps at 6 minutes and 3 seconds. It is meaningless to talk about technique or 11-string guitar when talking about Moran. I can say with certainty that he is an artist who transcends such levels. He has studied Baroque music extremely sincerely, and has constructed a highly advanced and profound musical world, eliminating low-level pretensions and bluffing. This is impossible for an average person, and there must have been days of unimaginable stoic training behind his performance. Bach left behind many arrangements of his own works, but Moran's performance will leave him smiling.

    Aside from the extra depth of the interpretation because of the low basses, I absolutely love the ornamentation in this one! It's original and perfectly placed through the piece. I also adore the sound, even sounding like a harpsichord at some point. For my taste this is the best interpretation I have listened to so far

      If I were cast on the proverbial desert island w/ only 1 piece of music - only this, certainly. Disagree a bit about "most interpretations;" the great Narciso Yepes, for instance, w/ his 10-string instrument? Even, let's say, Bream & John Williams, Maestro Segovia disciples notwithstanding, play the work differently, if not as dramatically so as here, to my ear? Your thoughts appreciated, withal.

    I love Bach, and I love the Partita that this is based on. But I can’t get over what a profound and meaningful interpretation this is. It is simply the best guitar interpretation of Bach that I have ever heard. If I have a bad day, I fire up UA-cam and I listen to this before I go to bed. It restores my soul. Wasser’s interpretation is amazing, the playing is faultless, the overall experience is transcendental. I agree with the comment below: if we ever needed to prove to an alien race that humanity, at some point in its history, was worth something, this would be Exhibit One. Bach wasn’t just the best, he was on a different plane; and Moran Wasser manages to convey it to the listening world. Thank you.

    Not one of my best Chaconne, but the best of the best! Stunning..., His masterful left hand fingers don'ts lose any one note, firmly pressing the strings onto the fret, which leads to clearer sounds than any other's. His right-hand fingers' touch is no less powerful than delicate. Thumbs Up. Applauds from all my heart.

    I own a 10-string, so I can appreciate what he's got going on. He's making use of all strings, which is always nice to see from a multi-string player.
    He's tuned a half-step low (C# instead of D). The lower pitch seems to give his 11-string more depth and presence. I must say I like the effect. And yet he has a capo on the 2nd fret! Which means, with his tuning, the E string would be a D, the A string a G, the D string a B, the G an F, the B an A and the high E a D. But why capo? Shorter effective scale making some of the more severe stretches easier?
    His arrangement and expression are outstanding. One of the best versions of the Chaconne I've ever heard.

    • @bacicinvatteneaca
      @bacicinvatteneaca 5 років тому +14

    The sublime portion from 4:04” !!
    The control from 7:00” onwards!!
    The beauty of the integral whole piece!!
    The bass and dialogues from 7:51 !!
    I am speechless. I thought piano versions could. It be topped. I still prefer this on piano, but you gained not only my respect but my sincere admiration. JSB rejoices in Heaven listening to you at 9:10, for example.

    • @josephmarcello7481
      @josephmarcello7481 4 місяці тому +1

      Nonsense! Like everything else, the chacon is far too easy on piano and therefore one does not get the deep drama of a human body challenged with negotiating the complexities of Bach's art.
      Like most pianists, were for that matter most instrumentalists, you seem to be largely chauvinistic about the sound of your instrument, which is only natural. Natural. But when looked at from a higher viewpoint, as to what actual sounds and timbtes do the greatest justice to the internal drama that is unfolding and expanding in such a profound way, one would have to go with an instrument which is touched directly by the hands of the player, such as a violin or a guitar, the most intimate of all instruments as both hands connect with the sound medium without any intermediary, not even a bow. Bow. Listen again with beginner's ears!

      I wonder if he's using Tempered tuning for the top and bottom strings. Strings are few ¢ cents off:
      sharp top three strings / flat bottom three strings to sound more "in-tune" like a piano.

I should say perfect, even brillant. I played a lot this Chaconne, I love it, a 13 min of written improvisation, a full image of Bach genius. I love a more singing way, some deepness here and there but... this is my expectation. We are all different, and we should remain so. I'm always curious about other ways, other sensitivity. It shows me so many other side I ignore.... Thank you for such a great work.

    To call any work or performance "classic" tends to exaggerate - but here? I think, not at all. Moran Wasser, w/ this Mueller instrument, gives us something stunning, in an established work of classic status many times heard, in many interpretations. Wasser's thinking & feeling of this piece has a dramatic power, an eliciting of the music's potential force, that astonishes me. I could say that this is what I have wanted from the Chaconne Dm all my life, & didn't realize it.
    Wasser's "collaboration" w/ the Dieter Mueller 11-string instrument lends power to an originality of phrasing & tempos, that could have been disastrous if not done perfectly, & if not supported throughout by the resonant strength of this unique guitar. Interesting that the additional 5 strings seemed so little used directly, w/ little or no fretted notes; & yet, how well they anchored, "proclaimed," if you like, the most assertive or lyrical phrases that Moran Wasser's truly original mind gives us.

    Senza parole. Derek
    Without words. No doubt that we are dealing with one of the greatest guitarist of this era. Every performance by him is beyond any human executive ability. Perfection for what belongs to the human being. Dear Moran, I wish you the best he can aspire to in this world. Derek

      Perhaps. The most important thing is to make sure we have George Bush (both of them), George Soros, and Jacob Rothschild in the closet when the alien comes. We certainly don't want to show our worst.

    Thanks for your interpretation of this deep piece. My favorite one.
    Tears in my eyes while listening.
    (The fast scales in the minor section are, in my humble opinion, played as they should be: for the first time; i don't hear staccato and notes played in a flamenco way).

    When you hear musicians like this play this complicated, incredibly beautiful work it grows and grows on you. If you love it too, I can recommend John Feeley's performance on the 6 string guitar as well. A different performance by another superb musician. I shall continue to tune in to both of them whenever I need another shot of Bach. We are so lucky!

      technically brilliant. but u know he's shredfinh through the thing in a little over 11 minutes, can't help but preferring even a mdiocre violin recording, many of the lyrical passages are more expressive on a string instrument.
      admittedly some of the embishments and arpeggios in the middle sound interresting and fresh played way faster on a plucked lute-type instrument, but thats just a curiosity.

      I think your opinion of Smits is still right, Jon S.K. This is amazing. But 7177 below is right - it's a bit rushed at precisely the points restraint is called for. Smits get all those points - and destroys you with her performance.
