    F 16 has been my favourite fighter since I first laid eyes on it back in the mid 70s, it fulfils that maxim - 'If it looks right, It will fly right'! It has certainly stood the test of time too, still front line after nearly 50 years, not many can claim that, keep it flying. Great content by the way, my first time watching your channel, will definitely keep an eye out for more content from you.

    In the Air Force 10 years. Worked in the Alternate command post building in germany for 4 years. Drove my car to work each day, passing through the ready area and surrounded by Vipers. Many times waiting on the side of the taxiway for F-16 moving around. Was exhilirating and the F-16 will always be my favorite jet. All the pilots were top gun guys it's seemed. Once a month I did a training program I created for the pilots. Got to meet and talk to so many pilots. I felt so proud to even be a small cog in the F-16 program. I love the Eagle, and of course the F-22 and F-35, but my heart will always belong to the viper.

    Thank you for this video……I love the F-16….Fighting Falcon :). My grandfather was an aircraft engineer and he retired from Texas Instruments and one of his last projects, contracted with General Dynamics, was integration of fly by wire. 1970,s technology that we use in every modern fighter today. When I saw the F16 up close at an air show, I was impressed with that it's seeminly 95% engine, and the thunderbirds really put on a good show with the high G maneuvers and low level flying.

      You show look here on UA-cam for the 2019 Indy 500 flyover video. An A-10 and F-16 did a second flyover and the Viper simply electrified the 350,000 fans there with me. The race paled in comparison.

    Made by a fighter pilot. Makes sense now. The bubble canopy from the P-51. The pressure controls on a small stick, so you can maneuver without having to move your whole arm. Reminds me of the best pilot of WW2, Hans-Ulrich Rudel, a JU87 Stuka Dive bomber pilot. He helped design the A-10. Hans Rudel knew a lot about ground attacking. He had over 2500 sorties with over 500 Russian tank kills with the Stuka. If you look close at the A-10 you will see the gull wing design. It is not as pronounced as the Stuka, but it's there.

    Grew up next to an Airbase and we always called it the Viper, anyone in school who called it the Falcon was laughed at. Went on base for many scout trips as well and one time they let us sit in the cockpit of one of the F-16's in the hanger, we also got to see the C130 up close and go inside as well, but the jet was way more cool. We weren't allowed to take pictures, but to sit there and see how it felt was awesome.
    I also got to see the Thunderbirds up close as I then worked for the Police Department and one of my spots during airshows was to keep people away from the end of the runway, I made sure to bring some good earplugs as it was loud.

    Max, as a retired Army Aviator I many times had A-10 pilots or F-16 pilots pull up alongside wave and then move out. In Close combat the A-10 has the power and legs to stay with the grunts as long as they need My dad was an Army Air Corps guy and I grew up singing the Air Force song. Hi Max, I worked as a WDT/WCT for a NORAD RCC back in the late 70s - early 80s. During that time, the F-106 filled the primary stateside Interceptor role and I executed many scramble orders from the Senior Director. As I recall, we could expect a handoff in approx. 5 min. How quickly can an F-16 get off the ground for an Air Defense scramble?

    I know this video is about the F-16 but ahh that F-15 is such a beautiful machine. I live next to an airbase in the Netherlands where a lot of Americans used to be stationed, it's a museum now and a nature park. It's accessible 24/7 and you can use your bike to drive over the runway haha :) they have an F-15 in the museum hanging on the ceiling. The Dutch government had full control over the American squadron which I'm told is quite unique because normally everything would have to be run through the American chain of command.

    I moved to Ft. Worth in 1973. This was the time when the YF16 & YF17 were competing for the Navy and Airforce contracts. At the time when the YF16 won the AF contract, it was being called the "Fighting Falcon" because (according to the Fort Worth Star Telegram) "it can take the Eagle six ways to sunday". I don't know about the politics of the names, but it was being called Fighting Falcon before it had won the AF contract.
    According to the FW Star Telegram at the time (yes, this contract was a big deal at the time for General Dynamics, located in Ft. Worth) the reason the F16 did not win the Navy contract is because the Navy wanted the redundancy of 2 engines.

The number that screams out to me the most is flight hour costs which you mentioned regarding maintenance. The "Viper" name comes from Battlestar Galactica. Apparently some General Dynamics guys were BSG TOS fans and codenamed their project "Viper" and the name stuck with pilots. Eventually the Mk. VII in the reimagined series returned the favor by giving it features of the F-16 (underside intake, leading edge extensions, bubble canopy, and fly-by-wire).

    It's a really good aircraft. It's my number one USAF aircraft. But the Thunderbird's like the Blue Angles don't get the new stuff right away. They get the aircraft from the fleet that are close to retirement due to how many flight hours are on the frame. They inspect them, repair the frames, pull the gun out in place of a tank for the smoke system. I thought being a former Thunderbird pilot you would know this.

    • @Stubbies2003
      @Stubbies2003 8 місяців тому +2

      Well sorry but that isn't true. When the Thunderbirds moved to the F-16 A model it was in 1982-83 and they were brand new aircraft. This was 1-2 years before the first C/D models of the Viper were even out for the rest of the USAF. When they switched over to the C model it was in 1992 and those airframes were built in the 1986-87 time frame. An F-16 that is 5-6 years old is hardly the time frame where the Viper is "close to retirement".

      It’s the opposite for me, the thunderbirds are fast and aggressive more fun to watch. The blue angles are very grateful and nice to look at because of the tight formations. Love both teams though.

    As a 32 year army officer, keep the F16 in the sky ready to dog fight anything. Let the A10 do the ground support. The A10 is the army guy that is on patrol or out in a COP, best friend.

    The f16 as a dedicated tank killer is feasible, but the gau8 cannon on the a10 was made just for that job, flying low enough and armored well enough to take the 20mm, 30mm, .50 cal rounds from tanks that don't want to cooperate, the f16 is a prima donna, needs pristine runways and heavy maintenance support, the f16 can't compare to the a10 for actual extended close air support deployments, they might be able to get the job done, but at a much higher logistical cost...

    When the F-16 was first put into service, along with the F-15 it had the same basic engine is the F-111 that was the aircraft that I primarily worked on. It did have a problem with a third stage compressor failure. And in an F-16 oh, it doesn't allow the F-16 to survive and engine failure. The F-16 is almost impossible to Glide except at very high speeds. It is made so far out of balance, in order to make it and very agile, it almost precludes it from being able to be landed dead-stick, matter fact I still don't know that it can be done. Once they transferred over to the General Electric engines and got rid of the Pratt & Whitney hybrid bypass turbofan, that issue went away. The first generation General Electric engines, had a exhaust thrust of about 27-5. About 2,500 pounds more than the Pratt & Whitney engine. The export model of the F-16, the one with the j79 in it is still quite a competent aircraft. Do not know if they're still making that particular version for export, it's a couple of feet longer but the j79 is always been a very capable aircraft and they have gotten rid of the smoking issue that the F4 used to have with that engine. Mostly because they no longer use a separate oiling system that consumes oil as its press through the bearings. I believe that it actually uses fuel under high pressure through the bearings before it goes to the combustion chamber.

    In fighter jet terminology, what exactly does it mean to run out of energy? Does that mean youve slow down too much and have no more air speed to maneuver? Thanks in advance!

    • @BlyGuy
      @BlyGuy 8 місяців тому

      Low energy just means you are going slow. The F16 hates going slow and if you're in a Viper and find yourself in a dog fight, with a low energy state, odds are not in your favor.
      The F18, especially the Super Hornet, on the other thrives in a low energy state, same with the Raptor
