    Missing Melanie. She taught me to quilt way back in 2018. As fate would have it, I was diagnosed with kidney cancer around the time I heard of Melanie’s passing in January. Reading about her journey gave me the faith to start mine and rediscover my love of crafting. She brought so much joy to my life.

    I like how you don't just cover what to cut but also the correct way to cut. For a beginner like me it's so nice that you don't assume we know because some other tutorials don't even mention including the line or making an edge you can trust. That makes so much of a difference! I was frustrated for so long cause I couldn't figure out why my pieces seem to get slightly smaller as I go when I thought I was doing it right. TYTYTY. this helps a lot!!!

  • @Ronibearable

    The easier option, cut from the left side for your first cut. Line the ruler up with the bottom edge and make the first cut slightly larger than your measurement. Flip that first cut piece around and square off the uncut left edge. NOW, you continue cutting from the left, no need to flip the strip around. Anytime you move the stack of strips, there is movement. If you are cutting only 1 piece, flipping does not cause a problem but when you are stacking several, cut from the left and square the first cut and don't move the stack.. just continue from the unmoved left edge. Easier, and more accurate.

      Might I suggest to go to Good Will to look for fabric? Also, I find some great fabrics in the women's dress section. A size 3x, for example, has a lot of usable fabric. Practice a 1/4 inch seam as it can be challenging.

    Thank you for a great video! Any tips on getting a straight cut when using a rotary cutter? It doesn't seem to matter the brand or newness of my blades& cutters, there always seems to be a 'jog' in my fabric so the line is never quite straight.

    • @karenwescott2615
      @karenwescott2615 4 роки тому +3

      I used to have the same problem until I started standing with my shoulder in line with my ruler (cut line) and angled my blade just into my ruler instead of straight alongside the ruler and that seemed to stop the issue for me.

    Melanie, do you not iron your fabric beforehand? I iron and starch the living heck out of my yardage before I do any cutting as I'm so afraid of any shrinking. Do you not have those issues? Hello Melanie,
    Have you ever made quilt outta you old t-shirts? I got alot of old football, army, and fraternity shirts I'd like to use. Been thinking about buying a machine to have another hobby. Thanks for sharing😀

    • @christianne1984
      @christianne1984 5 років тому

      I'm not an expert, but after following her tutorials to make my first quilt, I would suggest checking your old t-shirts for any stretch. Having any kind of stretch in your fabric can cause problems, both when you're sewing (stretch is challenging to work with for beginners) and down the line (warping and distorting). 100% cotton is a quilting favourite, and it has no stretch. Even if you don't go that route, I definitely recommend buying a machine and starting this hobby. I've been finding it really fun and satisfying!

    Hey Melanie! Got a question for ya. I'm getting close to begin quilting and/or FMQ on my very first quilt...💃🏼 😂 (& it's a queen size). I may have bitten off too much cuz the machine I have sits on my large sewing table however it's not flush with the table. I have an accessory piece for my machine that works like a Sew Steady but I really don't think it's substantial enough for so much bulk. Do you have any ideas as to how I could ..get a great price for a long arm 😂 OR "quilt-as-you-go" (which I've never done before & you could do a tutorial 👍) OR just struggle along in hopes that it doesn't look completely awful. Make sense? I need your brainpower! 💪
