Icelandic for everything but expeditions! Way back in the mists of time a TV show called you bet challenged scouts to get one up and down and packed away in a very short time. My leader back then challenged our group to beat the TV scouts who failed. We didn’t fail having thought about it for a minute or 2 before starting and the whole thing including the fly was up and braiding pegged in a flash! We got so good we could get the whole thing out the bag and up in about 5 minutes. Big and bulky they are but I think there is a reason they still have a place in scouting and it’s their sheer level of robustness!
@@bigmaninthewoods no but before the start of covid, I was trying to talk my group into buying their first few tents as they were going to have to replace old stock. Hopefully I'll get the chance soon though.
The problem with a big expensive Air Tent is that it's not repairable. If you're hauling that weight you might as well go with the Icelandic. Our Group use the cheaper Vango tents which last a few years. My last group used The Canvas Force 10's which are easy to replace bits and bobs and as you've found, last forever. I have one. It's nearly as old as me and just about as faded! For a bigger tent I quite like the Robens Prospector. Our family went through a number of tents till we settled on the Tentipi Safir 9. You can camp through just about any weather and sleep well. Not flipping cheap mind!
I just bought an air tent for myself as l camp alone with my daughter. It is most definitely the way forward. My 6 year-old pumped ours today. But I did worry I won't be able to lift it into the car myself it's heavy and as big as her. For scouts where there will be plenty of hands I don't see the weight as a problem but the size and cost makes me think it's a long way off being commonly used for scout camps 😞
We have patrol tents and task force tents (4 man version of a force 10) But we are looking for some modern nylon tents for weekend camps Probabbly a tunnel tent design although dome isn't out of the question
The best boy scout tent is alway the tent that scouts can build by themselves. A pyramid tent is easy to build and for 4-season. A tarp tent is the favory one for senior scounts.
I buy the Eurohike Axon 3. We have used them for years at our group. Just bought 4 new ones from millets. £100 each. Problem with the patrol tents is u don’t want to be lumbered with packing it away yourself. 😁😁
Just imagine you are the quartermaster and someone brings along an air tent saying that there is a slow puncture! All very well with a bike inner tube (comparatively small), but finding and repairing holes would be a nightmare. The Icelandics still have for practicality, for the most part easy to repair. You find a small hole, put your bag in front of it and stitch it up later - you find a big hole, that’ll be the door!
I have an air pole tent, and as you say it weighs a ton, my bell tent is lighter. To be honest I can't see air poles catching on for scouts yet, 10 years time maybe when they are lighter maybe? They are cumbersome and I worry about repairing them with knowing how scouts can be. We normally use small tunnels (vango beta 350s) as its easy to set up and a 350 is 3 scouts plus kit easy. Can pitch Icelandic solo if you know what your doing but it's not fun.
@@bigmaninthewoods I used to do it for nights away training, alot easier if you have storm guys (and cheat a little and use a Niger ( 8 foot rather than 13 foot)
Air tents are great however not easy of the wear & tear of Beavers , Cubs and Scouts. Canvas is still strong and long lasting :) Backpacking tents and for dofe type expeditions and short stays or self isolating social distancing camping ;) thanks for the video.
Let's hope air tents are not the future. I have seen many a deflated air beam spoil a camping trip. Scouts is about teaching skills, to teach putting up a tent should involve... putting up a tent, not just pumping air into it. A Scout that can put up a pole tent can put up an air tent, but not the other way around? Understanding the simple engineering of a bendy pole threaded through the loops of a dome tent means that they could replace the pole for some bamboo or length of branch from the forest floor and make it work in a pinch. A flat air tent... there's not much you can do. And deep inside I think you believe this too which is why you'll never get rid of that trusty Force 10!
Can't see air tents taking off worldwide. Cold nights and the air would contract, hot they would expand. Our Scouts like dome vs. the A-frame, but for proper winter camping here in Canada it's quinzhee's or tarp - no tent at all!
We stopped using them when I was the only driver and only had a corsa (at the time) one patrol tent and my car was full.... Or I could enough tunnel tents for all our scouts and have room for more kit. I will agree they are warmer (or cooler in thr heat of the summer... Maybe next year we will take them to summer camp...
Lay the tent out, the corners give you the location of the pegs for the storm lashing, then put up the tent as you would a frame marquee one pole at a time.
1 airtents are not the future for Scouting 2 stop saying tenting 3 buy good quality domes, no less than a couple of hundred on a 4 man 4 use modern bell tents, they are fantastic my beavers can put up our 4meter ones up with only guidance ! 5 finally where you never thought to put up a patroltent single handed?

Hi Mark yeah I believe that we'll all move to air tents, the quality and design will get better.
Keep going and keep safe.
Have you tried airbeam tents yet?

Do you use your patrol tents often?
@@bigmaninthewoods no mainly due to the logistics of getting them dry and some leaders not liking them
@dasy2k1 that’s exactly my troops problem. We like to use them but it’s the drying them out if they get wet is the problem

I've tried to out an Icelandic up on my own... There was quite a few naughty words being said by me shall we say... Never again! Lol

Do you prefer canvas rather than the dome style tent?
The only tents that we have here the "cheap" Decathlon dome/Igloo style tents, I always wanted to see how those Icelandics are in real life
The Icelandic tents are awesome, but frigging heavy when wet

Totally agree..... I love the vango force 10, I'm actually trying to source the porch extension for it, but with no luck

If you know how to correctly put them up 😁

Also take ages to dry out when wet!
Patrol tents are able to be put up single handed, you just have to rethink the method.
I tried once.... Was rather tricky
