edit: at the time i wrote this comment i only heard from secondary sources which said it wasn’t as bad as people made it out to be and i didn’t watch the movie (i think it wasn’t out on netflix yet so only a few people had watched it at that point), it was wrong of me to take what they said as fact without watching it and i should not have made this comment

There are several criticisms toward Liberal Arts education systems, but the difference in cost at $55k/y 3-year university degree (international timeline for most degrees) vs. 4-year (Liberal Arts) is $55k.
The difference in a $2k/y (common international cost) versus $55k/y for a 4-year degree is $218k.
Even if one were to go with inflation-adjusted prices of only US universities, the value comes out ridiculous. Ivy league schools in 1960 were ~$2k/y. Inflation-adjusted, that's ~$20k/y now. $55k/y for 4 years vs. $20k/y is $140k/y.
"Programs and pre-reqs that have entirely nothing to do with the field you actually care about" is a huge red herring. If they were more than a drop in the bucket, the cost of the few 3-year schools in the US would be closer to international and 1960 (inflation-adjusted) standards. However, they aren't.
Because higher university is privatized. They compete with each other to make their campuses more attractive and some of these extra amenities come from non tutition fees. Like I go to UC and we had to pay like extra $500 fee for a new swimming pool.

I went agains a person with a bachelor’s degree to get a Banker position at a bank. I thought I was toast but I got the job. They chose experience (maybe charisma) over a university degree). From there on I stop believing in the importance of college.

Actually most Silicon Valley big names are changing their job descriptions to 4 year bachelors or equivalent work experience or projects. Which means you have to grind it out with online free courses and build your own project portfolio to stand out but it’s possible

I was a TA at University of Illinois during grad school and still left over 50k in debt, and they tried to argue we shouldn't get tuition assistance the last semester and I spent months in arbitration just to get a couple thousand.

It depends on your major. If you're getting a STEM degree, probably. If you're getting a BA without getting any practical experience like an internship, then probably not. I write this as someone with a BA who has a job that doesn't require it.

@@alankoslowski9473 The problem is that everyone get pushed into STEM so now there are a ton of people with STEM degrees and not enough jobs to for them so it's hyper competitive at least in my state. There are level 1 help desks roles in my area that requires a bachelor degree to do what is essentially gathering information and passing it to the higher tier if it's not a simple fix. the fun part is that they pay like $12 an hour if you're lucky. What needs to happen is a institutional shift in the way education is viewed and funded so people don't go into debt just pursuing a degree they want at any college in the country.

Being penalized for not going to college is even worse when you realize that only ~33% of Americans actually go to college. That’s a minority even though it’s everyone in some places.
Trade schools and vocational training should be given more importance.
Here in the west coast of the states the MINIMUM of trade school is $25,000 for attending a 6-8 straight months with MAYBE 3 days of either tardy or sick days...then to even get the license of whatever you are trying to get is another $370 minimum. Books are $50 used, $100+ new. Just remember they DO NOT REFUND ANYTHING

The saddest part is that even with a degree, once you're over fifty, you're still worthless in the eyes of most potential employers. I was lucky enough to get my BFA in the late 1980's. It pulled me out of poverty into the middle class. For years I enjoyed a good income , good credit and the chance to feel a part of the American dream. Then I turned fifty. Job offers disappeared and my income declined to the point where I burned through my pension and eventually had to sell my home. At the beginning of the year I was hopeful for a chance to start earning good money again, then Covid-19 hit. I've been out of work since April.
I'm also an adjunct instructor at a local community college, that was forced to close it's campus because of the pandemic. Without any assistance the school expected me to have an online class available so that it could list my class in the catalog. I declined. I didn't want to broadcast a Zoom class from my condo bedroom so the school could make most of the money. At a certain point in life, you get tired of jumping through hoops to please people, only to get paid a pauper's wage.

I agree with your feelings, but I have to point out that this would only benefit ONE class. A huge portion of the endowment is put into longer-term investments that make money by themselves, so that next year the endowment will be as large or larger. This is explained well by the phrase, "spend money to make money." They support themselves and their students with the revenues from these investments as well as the massive interest on the accounts. Spending a large portion of it, let alone all of it, in one place would hurt the students' aid more than it would help them.
Reminds me of when I went to college and really wanted to live in a dorm. I looked at them and it was insane prices, something that my family could not possibly afford. They're priced higher than the houses and apartments for rent in the area. For me that was a shocking realization that my university is catering to the rich and trying to make money instead of house students.

It’s not cooperate greed it’s the government’s fault. The solution to the problem is to stop giving out student loans. When the government started giving out student loans, college became affordable to more people, so the demand for college increased.
In response, colleges jacked up prices because people could afford to go with student loans.
If we stop giving out student loans, not as many people will be able to afford it, so demand will go down. In order for colleges to stay in business they will need to drop their prices.
This is guaranteed to work it’s basic economics.
@@King205 Essentially, stop people from going to college so less people will have high paying jobs. The people with high paying jobs will have plenty of money to fall back on, can force higher pay because there are few people to do those jobs, and the people who can no longer go to college can do the low paying jobs.
Maybe if they're lucky, they'll commit suicide and leave more money to everyone else and give their dead end, mind numbing and unappreciated job to someone else, who will likely be talked down to and degraded because they didn't go to college. They will be unable to get money to sent their children to college, and repeat the cycle.
Basic economics? The rich don't care how much money they have to spend; they can afford it. The college may hike up prices, but the people able to pay will do so. Instead, what happens is the college grows smaller and more 'elite'. It's the nobles vs the peasants all over again. Only the rich 'deserve' college because they can pay for it. Those that can't afford it don't deserve it anyway. Rich get richer, poor get poorer.
But yes, it's all the governments fault and not corporate greed. Basic economics, meet common sense.
@D. Steven For profit colleges are a cancer. They've never had moral superiority. If they ever claimed it, they lied. Honestly, that was one of the biggest draws for Bernie. Make college free, and anyone who wants to go can go. Pass or fail on your own merits. A great number of people don't go to college because they know they'll be paying for the loans for the rest of their lives. Make college free, and more will go because there's really no reason not to. It'll raise the collective intelligence of the USA, though, and lord knows we can't have THAT.

Community colleges, trade schools and vocational schools need to be promoted to their local high schools more aggressively. We do not want our future leaders to be burdened by thousands of dollars of debt. The burden of never-ending debt on a person's health is so detrimental.

This is confusing, why say system? In any society larger than a small town, self-interest will become the dominant motivator for the vast majority of individuals. Everyone is trying to get on top, it is human nature. If Harvard can afford to not allow students to defer a year they absolutely will, unless the negative implications outway the profit motivators (ie empathy concerns or future profit lost). Only in our individual interactions can people become human with each other.

To be fair, the answer was rather nuanced, and asked people to look into real academic statistics and for students not to get sold by the glamour of lazy pools and theme park show-offs. He spent half the episode pointing out the reality of NOT attending college.
Except in this one, because not getting a degree is far worse.
Easily the best “Is college worth it” piece I’ve ever seen. The cost of NOT going to college is the real detriment. Community college is the way to go in my opinion. No reason to pay absurd tuition for the first 2 years when you end up with the same paper at the end of it all.
yup, because I took AP classes and did dual enrollment, I found out that I only need to get one or two semesters to get my Associates and go to a university.
That's all bullshit. I am a heavy duty mechanic and my wife is a finance officer with a diploma. We make over $150,000 a year and live very comfortably. We work Monday to Friday 9 to 5 jobs. I'm 39, have a pension, investments in mutual funds and zero debt. I live in a $400,000 house, which I intend to pay off in only 10 years, and both of us never went to university.
The propaganda telling people they need to go to university is just bullshit. Go to a trade school or community college. Cheaper and you will probably come away smarter than the average university student. Plus you won't have hundreds of thousands of dollars of debt.
Hasan, I wish you had mentioned community colleges, which are free for low-income students. In California, most community colleges are free for all local students for the first two years after high school graduation. It's an affordable option for the first two years of college, and then you can transfer to a more expensive college.
I was one of those people who did go to a community college & a Jr college & a trading school...no difference at all. I had to pay everytime & i live in California
I was also in a community College and I swear it only had the most in competent people working. Nobody knew what I had to do to get the job I wanted/degree that I wanted and everyone's answer was to just do more schooling. A full time job and a part time job at the same time BARELY helped me pay for it (while also borrowing money from my older sister). The education system is so fucked here.

As a retired tenured college professor (40 yrs.), I can tell you that college is still a good idea. But it doesn’t have to be the huge debt burden it’s made out to be. How to avoid the debt? 1. Forget the Ivy League schools unless daddy is rich enough to have a building, or at least a physics lab, named after him. 2. The most economical way to start college is when you’re in high school. Many states will allow high school students take college courses for free. Families pay the tuition if the students don’t pass. I know students who graduated with an A.S. Degree (community college) before they graduated from high school. They enter college as a junior or late sophomore. 3. Get a general two year degree at a community college then transfer to a university. Freshman and sophomore course requirements are pretty much the same but are much less costly at community colleges. Community colleges aren’t supporting huge endowments or sports. At a community college you will have smaller class sizes and direct access to the professors. When I was a freshman at Ohio State U. my smallest class was 200 people (not counting my Phys. Ed. class at 80) and I didn’t talk to professors; I talked to their graduate assistants. 4. Don’t take six years to get a four year degree. Too many students drop a course the moment it gets challenging, or if the professor isn’t entertaining, or if the class is scheduled before noon. After the first day of class, you don’t get a tuition refund. Students can waste thousands of dollars by dropping classes instead of completing them. 5.Texts are expensive but they are available in different formats: regular hard-bound book, paperback, online Kindle-type format. You will always lose money selling books back. Buy either cheaper used books or online books for non-major course texts you’d probably sell at the end of the semester). Buy hard-bound or paperback books for major courses and keep them. They will be useful when taking upper-level courses in your major. There are many online sites that buy and sell texts. Make sure you get the correct edition of a text. The required edition should be on the course syllabus. 6. If you are smart, motivated and determined, take the maximum number of credits allowed with full-time tuition. At my college, 15 credits are full time but students can take up to 20 credits for the same cost.
Adjunct/part-time instructors are overworked and underpaid. However, they are not expected to do research, publish or participate on committees.

As a PhD student who had been a TA for years I have two main reactions to this:
1) Thank you so much for drawing attention to the commodification of education and administrative bloat that form the rot at the centre of our university systems.
2) I think you sort of missed the point and failed to address the key issue explicitly. You frame "is it worth it" purely in terms of income, not in terms of what you actually learn, and how an educated populace is so integral to a working democracy (although you do allude to it at the end when asking whether funds are better put into the pool or the library). But the growth of anti-intellectualism we have seen over the past years, and the growing ignorance of the voting public speaks to a populace which is loosing faith in and is not receiving an education in the liberal arts (especially the humanities). We should not push people away from going to universities due to their excessive costs, we should move to make universities affordable and accessible to all so that more people will become educated and better our societies and the wisdom of the average voter.
Another TA here, just finishing my master's over the summer and starting the PhD in the fall (also in the humanities). 100% agree on all points. Sometimes I feel like half my job is getting my students to consider that maybe, just maybe, there is a halfway decent reason why they're being asked to take courses in the humanities as part of the core curriculum even if they're STEM or business majors. The idea that college is just resume-padding or a kind of financial investment with education as a secondary, almost optional component is pretty damaging.
I really liked this episode for the conversation about the money and where it goes, but I think it's also very much worth being conscious of the fact that college can bring immense social value if we can make it accessible to everyone and stop marketing it as a 'golden ticket.' When I was a freshman, my university's common read was Andrew Delbanco's book College, What it Was, Is, and Should Be. It's a text I still refer to any student who shows an iota of interest in thinking about what they're doing with 4-5 years of their lives beyond the paycheck they think they'll have access to at the end of it.

I agree with you on the growing anti-intellectualism, I went to college for computer science and yeah came out with a degree and make a lot of money but I don't remember learning anything worth a damn in US History or Texas History, actually those courses are so whitewashed that the entire Vietnam war was like half a chapter in my textbook. This was a war that lasted well over 10 years and led to the death of 3 Million Vietnamese people, and we didn't learn shit about it aside from oh it was a mistake and America shouldn't have gotten involved. Our history textbooks in college were a fucking joke and they're even worse in High school. So until colleges can improve the curriculum and stop whitewashing history, I wouldn't recommend the humanities to anyone, at least not based on my limited experience.

While I was a teaching assistant at Binghamton University, State University of New York, I was eligible for food stamps because of my low income. Especially when I had a 15% state income tax on top of the federal income tax. I barely got by, and I remember accepting financial aide from my family for the first time in my life, as I cried over the frustration of not being able to take care of myself.

The Canadian post secondary schooling system follows that same principle as well. Tuition and book costs grow each year and the level of education stagnates. 55k for a year’s tuition? That is just INSANE!! When I went to university, the price of one year’s tuition (for a standard 5-course load) was $660.00. Now, for the sake of full disclosure, I didn’t actually pay any tuition because I had a selection of scholarships to choose from. My university education did not in the end have any effect on the career I ended up in but I would still argue for free higher education, just as do for universal healthcare. The true value of higher is not in what is explicit (the facts, if you will). The greatest gift of higher education is in what is implicit: the learning process, getting the habit of questioning what you are told, learning to think logically and critically and, yes, even the socialisation into a mass of diverse people. Higher education has no downside, it only gives you a toolbox of mental techniques and a base of information that a flexible mind can turn towards whatever it chooses, regardless of whether you actually received a diploma or not. (Pardon me; I do tend to run on for a bit.)

Here in Mexico, we pay 25 mexican cents (like a US 1c) a year for tuition. But once you try to become a professor, you start in a program as a kind of assistant with a salary of 70 monthly dollars (but with medical care). After that, you need masters or PhD to fight for a place as an adjutant earning like a hundred per month with little to no chance of EVER getting a tenure (or until someone dies of old age)...
Still a bad situation, but at least we don't spend in lazy rivers

They are paid more than most athletes, the best athletes draw huge crowds etc and can earn a lot of money, but they're really being cultural icons not athletes I'd argue when they get paid the big money.
If a professor does the same he will also see a wage increase, but the job changes from teaching a class of people to public speaking, youtube videos and interviews, it's more about volume.
I do agree that Academic work should be better paid and more decoupled from market forces perhaps so you can have more economically independent Professors or Scientists that can do work they believe to be important, afford integrity etc, instead of being cash-strapped all the time, to the degree that they take on work like grading because they need the money.

My husband was a teacher assistant while getting his PhD in electrical engineering. There underpaid, work over 40 hours, and with him being an international student he couldn’t get another job.
This is probably one of the major factors that universities have in searching/accepting international students. They have them by the balls. I taught two 5-credit classes per semester when I was a TA for a similar stipend mentioned here. Abdul Aden - That’s just their way of weeding out a large swath of people who aren’t serious, otherwise they’d be getting tens of thousands of applications for a routine job. If you’re serious, reliable, and can sell yourself as to why you’d make the best candidate and f*ing deliver (and not f** sh*t up) once you are hired - go ahead and apply anyway. I’ve landed many jobs where the ‘requirements’ listed on the application were largely flexible, negotiable, or irrelevant altogether. Put yourself on the other side’s shoes - if you’re working hard to honestly fill a much needed position, would you hire someone without a solid track record? The only other way is if that person has similar experience or can prove competence with spec projects they put together on their own time. You’re best bet without a degree is to work for a startup or a small mom & pop firm, get yourself some equivalent and transferable experience - and only THEN apply for Tesla. Otherwise, you’re competing with thousands of other grads from top named uni’s (especially in current time where folks lower their standards). Realize that’s instant gratification culture or entitlement if you want to work for the best of the best just starting out, but don’t actually offer the best of the best against a sea of other candidates. Just remember that sales is huge, you’ve got to STAND OUT. You got to sell it and be confident going in there that you’re a professional who gets sh*t done, because any doubts or insecurities you have about your qualifications or ability to perform will imprint on the person who’s job it is to hire you.
If all else fails, just know there’s lots of BS and politics involved - especially for an established firm with ‘professional’ HR whose sole mission is CYA. If the company has tons of red tape and HR, chances are that they are too big and well established at that point (meaning they have the pick of the litter and will make it harder and harder for new candidates to apply by raising the min. requirements), and I’d suggest looking elsewhere. Keep in mind, in the early stage startup days, Elon was probably screening every single candidate personally. Now he ain’t got time for that - he’s too busy launching rockets into outer space. His people do that for him, and chances are they make decisions out of efficiency (meaning they’re not going to read thousands of applications for an assembly line job) and CYA.
Usually the way to get rich without a degree is somehow to have a strong portfolio of innovations in a field to show. For example, say you’re an inventor who somehow got on the news for something to help the environment without ever going to college, jobs will open up freely. For that, some study hack sites like Scott H. Young, Thomas Frank and Cal Newport can help with the self study to make your own portfolio to show results. Not going to college and getting rich often involves a lot of independence in learning, without teacher’s guidance or due dates to help you discipline yourself. Though James Clear’s blog filled with research on discipline can help. Though this is mostly just the exception to the rule, honestly. Maybe the next best thing honestly is something from an online course, like on sites like Edx, Coursera or Udacity. It’s expensive but at most seeing degree fees around 500 dollars, it’s much less than real life college. Lots of Ivy League Universities giving off online courses, and while I think they’re overrated, the truth is people take you seriously if you associate with such colleges even in the slightest way possible. In my experience, usually fields with employers who are most open to online schooling are STEM fields and creative fields to some extent. STEM, because of course they’re the types who like to keep up to date with the latest science and technology. The arts, because a lot of them just tend to value the unconventional, considering the creative fields is considered an unconventional path to itself. Not sure about much else, it seems like other types of careers with online schooling would be a gamble.

During my master degree, I was a teaching assistant and unfortunately for me, I was better at teaching than the professor according to the student so the professor made me teach half the time and 3 days before the final exam called me to say she didn't make the final exam and told me to do it. I had to put 2 all-nighters to get it done to be sure the student would understand the question correctly and not fail miserably. I hated the professor for doing that.

How is college almost free in Europe and especially Germany, while it’s almost impossible to get in America? In America, you have to fill out fafsa forms and scholarship applications to get a little out of student debt (which is among the most pernicious debt). One option is to go to community college for two years and then state school, but CCs don’t have the same resources or research opportunities that big institutions have . We need better options in the wealthiest country in the world.
Easy: we live in a cooperate oligarchy where our rulers want nothing more than to keep us dumb and subservient. So they lobby our congresses to strip funding from education and reduce regulation. Then the oilgarchs are free to put their stooges and allies in administrative positions where they sit on their asses while getting paid millions of dollars and sweep up scandals to protect their predators.
It's sort of like how they put those rings around a cormorant's neck...
we also have free universities in argentina, and the university of buenos aires is the best in latin america, so uknow if a "third world country" can do it why not the US
College isn't hard to get in America, but getting a quality education and getting out of debt is the hard part. You live in a country where college is free, take a major that doesn't quite pan out, you can go back and still be relatively debt free. In America, if you take the wrong major and don't get a decent job, going back to college means either more debt, or being stuck in under paying jobs.
