Can we please make the insulin patent public domain already? Also, has anybody ever heard of the "Open Insulin Project" before? Most of us should support them.
The patent for the inslin expired a long time ago so it technically is public domain. A new party could go out and make the original drug but there's a lot of paperwork to make biological drugs which makes the cost of entry into the market hard.
Hasan, your confusion is economic, not cultural. FDA won't approve new drug unless it beats current market availability and conditions. Sometimes the market condition is current approved drug is affordable for patients. If you have a new drug in the pipeline that you know to be better for your patients and your business (less legal liability because less complications/actionable adverse effects), then the government leaves you with only one legal option to positively benefit your target population: raise the price. It is illegal for a pharmaceutical company to pull drugs from market without FDA auth. The dude is smug because he knows history will prove he saved lives, not eliminated them. As a diabetic here in the U.S. I was a victim of this. Even through Federal Blue Cross it was $500 per prescription set (i.e. a box of Novolog, a box of Lantus, and needles). I ended up in the hospital with a blood pH of 7.05 (normal range is 7.35-7.45). I've learned a few things since then. One, Novo Nordisk offers a manufacturers coupon for Novolog, making it $25 for a prescription, and two, there is a cheaper alternative to Lantus known as Novolin N, or NPH, that costs $21 per prescription. My cost went from $500 down to about $50 for the same amount of insulin. How did I learn about these things? NPH was prescribed to me by the doctors during my hospital stay, and the manufacturers coupon was from a friend of mine who is a pharmacy tech. Novo Nordisk didn't tell me. None of my endocrenologists had ever told me there were cheaper options. Ask your doctor bout NPH, and google NovoCare discount. First Time making a comment on Patriot Act. For the Topic, I clearly reject the American drug policy and I hope the American society changes their mindset of using desperate people to make big money. I’m sry, to bother with this and I know addressing comedy with criticism isn’t the kind of fruitful way, but as a young German, I highly reject the impression given by Hassan in 10:04. Well…I give him the first two statements. Those might be true although chocolate is more a swiss thing to do. However,… saying I lived up the lie and I was told that my, in my case, Great-Grandparents where only good people, conveyed as a fact and the audience just laughing and cheering about it, is in fact hurting. I might be too sensitive, but as a viewer of Patriot act, I know that Hassan is capable of using Real Talk for important things to submit. Using the heavyweight Burdon of my generation for a small joke feels just wrong and I would like to share my point of view. E.g. Making jokes about the American heritage of racism can be contextualized by most of the American audience. But I don’t think that Hassan’s statement, as it was uncommented, used as a joke and more or less portrayed as a fact, can’t be put into context, because most of the American people don’t get a chance to know how deep our roots in history run in my generation and how we learn about our Big size Heritage. My Generation learns about the crimes of National Socialism in primary, middle school and high school. Those crimes are used and are present as narrative in every kind of medium u can imagine, weather it is a book, videogame, movie, podcast, choose whatever u like. Nearly every kid in school visited at least once one or two contraction camps. I visited 8 concentration camps around Europe by the age of 19 and I made that 9 by the age of 24. I learned about the darkest outcome of hatred, nationalism and patriotism of my Great-Grandparents. I wish Hassan would not have conveyed the image that my generation has to be updated about our German history like a fact, even though it was used in a joking context, when in fact we’re facing the bigger problems of the future, preventing those kinds of crimes to happen again in the world, because we are well aware of them. Thanks for your attention.
I think the joke was more pointed in the direction: Look, even evil germany does this better than we do. Being german myself (~1 generation older) I would second his line, that we live on the thought that it werent our own grandparents. It really is something of a taboo. Sure, we all agree that really bad things happened and that germany is to blame. But I know no one who said: My grandpa was a Nazi. 'My' grandpa always seemed to be the minority that had nothing to do with all of it. My grandpa talked about his time in the war... but it never came to speech ( even to my mind for a long time) how much part of the system he was. Since some of my strongest positive childhood memories inherit from the vacations at my grandparents, I think I know why I did not wanted to ask that question for a really long time. But I think it is a different thing one generation further. You normally have no connection to your great-grandparents (other than 'being family') so you are able to see things more neutral, which certainly is a good thing.
German here. Considering his audience, his joke targeted the wrong generation. My parents never learned about the Nazis in school, I did. During the 50ies and 60ies, the past wasn't addressed, at least in Western Germany. Nevertheless, my grandfather was a Nazi and an arsehole

Also, has anybody ever heard of the "Open Insulin Project" before? Most of us should support them.
the natural version of insulin is not covered by patent
The patent for the inslin expired a long time ago so it technically is public domain. A new party could go out and make the original drug but there's a lot of paperwork to make biological drugs which makes the cost of entry into the market hard.
Insulin is technically open source with parabiosis.
A free economy depends on the government to make sure it stays truly free. The same applies to meritocracies. No regulation =/= free economy. If you truly want a free economy, you need some regulation or else it devolves. Antitrust laws break up monopolies, for instance. Monopolies; you know, things that MAKE THE ECONOMY LESS FREE.

Hi Hasan.,,
As a nurse , I can relate what he’s talking about.. also so much truth about the episode on fentanyl , old age.. and so on...
good job on that...
can you also make an episode on the nursing like the nurse:patient ratios, the work overload, the burnout how health care turned into corporate business in USA
Thanks again.
I love your show
I lasted 18 yrs, then I had totally burnt myself out. I tried to do everything, putting in 110%, could only work 50-60hrs with kids, thankful for my Mom, wouldn't have afford daycare. Never to barely slept, worked all crazy hours. It's been 8 yrs since I stopped, still can never sleep past 5/6 hours, I think my adrenals are burnt have no energy, still trying to learn how to I feel joy or excitement again. I wish I was able to pace myself better back then, or had ability for downtime, never was able to afford extras, vacations, have a savings or build a retirement, health insurance premiums for family at work was almost 1/2 my check,, rent/mortgages 1/2-3/4, being only income, or actual quality time when my kids were growing up. The few hours a day were always stressed and or rushed. And for all of it, you're rarely very appreciated, few and far between. I was an LPN (low paid nurse) and having to do everything for 20-40 patients was way too much. Especially when your an empathetic person and do your best for each.
Me after 1 episode - Why does no one makes shows like this more often????
After after 20 episodes - Becoz no one had balls like Hasan to host such a show!!!!

Thank you for doing this episode. My daughter is 12 years old and a type one diabetic. She was diagnosed when she was eight and it scares the hell out of me how she is going to afford insulin as a young adult. I know I was not responsible enough to pay for thousands of dollars worth of medication when I was 19 or 20, so I worry about making sure that she gets the medication that she’s going to need to continue to live every day. I have tried to stockpile insulin but because it expires so that’s only going to work for a year or two maybe? She struggles with so much because of her diabetes and I can’t make it easier for her. He’ll, we live in Florida two hours from Disney World, and have never gone because so much money goes into paying for insulin and we just can’t afford to take a vacation to Disney World. That is ridiculous because all four of our kids pay for the fact that insulin companies just want to get richer at the expense of families and diabetics all over the US. Thank you for making this topic a little bit more public. It really is appreciated.
9:48 She mentioned Taiwan which is where I'm from, and we have one of best public healthcare in the world

Universal Health Care will fix the problem so quick.
Do you really think pharmie won't make double if not triple the amount ?
@@ronnieDaking Universal Health care means one-payer system and price is controlled by committee(could be gov or mix of reps from consumers, doctors and pharmas and gov). Why do you think the same insulin cost 8 dollars in Taiwan and 25 dollars in Europe? Pharams still make profits in those countries otherwise they would be out.
@@stevenbrock528 and that will most likely lead to shortages. Prices aren't leavers some CEO just pulls up and downs, instead they are metrics of supply and demand. The moment prices start going up, entrepreneurs see this as an indicator that there is a bussiness opportunity and start developing their own product or service in order to participate in that market.
The only reason why this is not the case in the medical market is because it takes the FDA 12 to 20 years to approve of a new drug. Along with that patten laws prevent competition from creating a clone of the drug which they can sell at a competing price.
Meanwhile Cuba has a waaaaay better health-care system than the U.S. even though they're waaaaaay poorer than the U.S.

Then there is Barry Sherman, the generous owner of an independent generic drug company who refused to sell to American Pharma companies, found murdered, but the police just brushed their hands and moved on.
Love this show~!
So glad an episode was done on this topic. As a nurse, I see first hand the consequences of people not being able to afford medications, especially insulin, it’s really horrible and sad!
"One more episode and I'm going to bed..."
You lied to yourself darling
Congress should absolutely break the patent on insulin. I have no sympathy for these price-gouging pharma companies.
- the natural molecule insulin is not covered by patent, or patentable. So, everyone can in principle make it and sell it
- the millions of diabetic people could create a no profit association that can outsource the production to third party companies at agreed price
- the "hard" earned money of PBMs, insurance and pharma companies' executives, and politicians are invested in a mar-a-lago golf club membership
His show was cancelled because he made enemies of people who would rather you never know the truth.

Yemen is about the only place this happens right now I'd say. Oh and maybe the US.
As a European, my only reaction is: wtf....
My mom had COPD and one of her inhales was $900...that is on top of the other breathing treatment medicines she required. We were in line at the pharmacy one time and an elderly couple in front of us were going through their medications and their monthly expenses to determine what they could afford to pay. They were talking about cutting their pills in half to make them last longer. No one should have to live (or die) based on the cost of a medication...period. The wealthy in this country make all their money off the poor and low income. It's true from our prisons to our healthcare to our education.
You know. All you have to do is to take refuge in another country. It's just a bus ticket.

Oh God it's a joke for fuck's sake, this is why we can tolerate expensive insulin in the US, we love being free and don't sweat the small shit.
Okay Nazi
I hope your comment gets more attention. It's really informative
German here. Considering his audience, his joke targeted the wrong generation. My parents never learned about the Nazis in school, I did. During the 50ies and 60ies, the past wasn't addressed, at least in Western Germany. Nevertheless, my grandfather was a Nazi and an arsehole
Keep going. Its all learning and enjoying man
This guy has the best political comedy show ever! Love Patriot Act!
Honest advice. If you're having trouble affording your insulin, please talk to your primary care physician. They'll almost certainly have insulin on hand in one form or another and they'll be willing to help. I've had a lapse in coverage and walked out of the doc's office with 2 insulin pens in hand. No charge. Please reach out to your medical professionals if you're in need.
This show is genius.

How about a comprehensive health insurance for every American that covers most hospital visits, check-ups and pharmaceutical costs - AND allows large orders of drugs and medical devices to be bought and sold to pharmacies at a heavily reduced price thanks to large scale bargaining. It would save consumers, pharmacies and hospitals millions - and give drug companies huge orders with room for negotiable interest. More people able to afford treatment, for less cost to the taxpayer.
Wow. We could call it MediCare For All.
c a t please explain how you would pay for it. Unless they completely overhaul our tax system it will never work. The middle class would foot the bill.
@@Bucks7542 we already pay more taxes on healthcare than other country becausr prices are too high. If you bring the prices down you don't have to raise taxes and can cover more people.
