This was a milestone in her career. One of her biggest songs ever, still loved and played nowadays. Was #1 in Europe and #4 in the US. Not bad for the fifth single of an album released a year earlier. This album was sooo good, this could easily be a first single but she had so much to choose from. Iconic 80s classic for sure. Timeless
This was such a HUGE hit in the 80s.. it's probably her most streamed song/video.. gorgeous melody.. it's one of her most performed tracks too ..the sticky and sweet tour version is amazing
Do you think the Sticky and Sweet tops the Girlie Show rendition? The GS performance remains my absolute favourite and to my mind, one of her most dynamic live performances ever!
Yes, she has had spectacular versions of this 1986 hit through her tours including S&S, but my personal favorite is the 2001 Drowned World Tour (DWT) where she performed it in flamenco style with choreography that brought the house down. In that final Spanish segment of DWT, she also performed an awesome Lo Que Siente La Mujer (What It Feels Like for a Girl) with an an all-female tango choreography that evoked of female empowerment. IMO she’s simply a genius of a music writer and performance artist.
Madonna has had an enduring natural affinity and passion for Hispanic/Latin music, art and culture that has influenced her throughout her life and career. She co-wrote this 1986 hit of an imaginary idyllic island of San Pedro while she was living in seaside Malibu, CA with her then husband Sean Penn. While developing and recording her True Blue album, she would drive to/from home and the recording studio in Los Angeles using the north/south Freeway 110 that passes through downtown LA. She revealed in an interview, that while writing the lyrics for La Isla Bonita she used the word “San Pedro” from the freeway off-ramp signage “TO SAN PEDRO” which is where the 110 FWY ends and is the location of the port of LA.
While it wasn't her biggest hit during the era of it was released (True Blue), it eventually became one of her most popular songs as the years progressed. When this was released, her status as a iconic pop star, had already sky rocketed. Her peak definitely came a few years later, but this was the transition between Pop Madonna and artistic Madonna. This has become a staple song for Madonna on many of her tours. It's definitely one of her favorite songs and she has since tried to duplicate that latin flavor in future songs being she loves Latin music. Quick tidbit... this song while only in it's instrumental demo state, was originally offered to Michael Jackson. He passed on it, and it eventually fell in the hands of Madonna and she wrote lyrics for it. This particular video is her most streamed video even more than Vogue, Like A Virgin and Like A Prayer.
This is THE SONG of Madonna's life, each weak it garners 2-3Million more views on UA-cam. I have clear memories on how big this one was, it really catapulted her into mega stardom. One hit after another, each one bigger & bigger, not slowing, constantly raising the pace, people today are not aware wgat she's achieved! From that moment on she was in the Michael Jackson league of LEGENDS. At least in my humble opinion. She was here to stay!
The next single she released after this was sort of a sequel or a sister of this. It was called “Who’s That Girl?” and should get a reaction also. :) That’s the thing about Madonna’s heyday from ‘83-‘91… each video/song she released built on the one that came before it.
Ooh...I'd love to see them react to the live version...the Who's That Girl Tour cemented my Madonna obsession at 5 years old ❤ In particular her performance of The Look of Love
@@lutalice the Who’s That Girl show is a master class in performance. Sometimes I feel Madonna is lost in later shows as the technology is so intense. This Show, and Blond Ambition are almost perfect.
Germans have a thing for Latins things and music anyway, i don't think many people realize it. Madonna's biggest hit in Germany was Hung Up though i believe, it was #1 for 9 weeks beating even La Isla Bonita.
One of my very favourites by Madonna ! .. Love the melody line and the feel of it .. Thanks for the reaction, and this is definitely playlist worthy .. Would suit Summer / Holiday / Latin / Chilled music listings .. I'd like to think Marissa's "8" was totally based on the song, but I suspect she gave a point or 2 to the guitarist !😉😅
"True Blue"(nice 50s style video with actress Debbie Mazar) "Material Girl"(she was the first person to sing upside down before 5O Cent) "Lucky Star" video that showcases Madonna's dancing background.🎶🎵👍
Was supposed to be for Michael Jackson, but he rejected it, Madonna revamped it and made it her own, one of the co-writers: Bruce Gaitch (dunno if spelling is correct?) Also co-wrote I Stand Alone for Agnetha Faltskog which has a very similar Spanish feel. Madonna I think has said La Isla Bonita is her favourite song, and she certainly has included it in many of her tour productions. In the UK at this time (1987) Madonna could do no wrong, this was her 3rd No’1 off the True Blue album. Her stadium tour of the Uk was hyped to high heaven, and Madonna didn’t need to even do interviews she was so newsworthy. What is interesting is in this era of the 80s, it was all about being iconic and elusive like Michael Jackson, almost larger than life. Madonna would deconstruct this image by 1991 by filming Truth Or Dare which lifted the veil of celebrity. She probably was the blueprint for all the reality and fly on the wall documentaries that are around now.

Actually, "bonita", means "pretty", this video has a profund spiritual simbolism... People around dancing represents spirits resting in Heaven, that's why they're just dancing so Happy. And Madonna represents a girl about to die, hopping for God's caress... When the video starts, you can find a woman in black, wearing a White mask, she represents death anda Evil, defated by God. Just amazing piece of work...

Last night I dreamt of San Pedro
Just like I'd never gone, I knew the song
A young girl with eyes like the desert
It all seems like yesterday, not far away
Tropical the island breeze
All of nature wild and free
This is where I long to be
La isla bonita
And when the samba played
The sun would set so high
Ring through my ears and sting my eyes
Your Spanish lullaby
I fell in love with San Pedro
Warm wind carried on the sea, he called to me
Te dijo te amo
I prayed that the days would last
They went so fast
Tropical the island breeze
All of nature wild and free
This is where I long to be
La isla bonita
And when the samba played
The sun would set so high
Ring through my ears and sting my eyes
Your Spanish lullaby
I want to be where the sun warms the sky
When it's time for siesta you can watch them go by
Beautiful faces, no cares in this world
Where a girl loves a boy, and a boy loves a girl
Last night I dreamt of San Pedro
It all seems like yesterday, not far away
Tropical the island breeze
All of nature wild and free
This is where I long to be

La Isla Bonita was originally presented to Michael Jackson but he rejected it. I now think it would be very weird if Michael would sing it HeeHee Shamoan😂
First latin inspired Madonna song, more to follow, most of them nothing close to La Isla Bonita with Spanish Lesson hitting an all time low😂
@Marvin Quezada I like Medellin☺️ and totally deleted I’m going bananas, thank you for putting it back in my head….NOT😉Why’s it so hard (which title implied something so different being on Erotica) has nice reggae vibes, not latin but there are crossovers. What about Evita. I can’t handle that album but it has some latin reference.😅
Salsa dress? Omg no! Is a tipical spanish flamenco dress from de South os Spain, si different than the salsa
