Piano and keyboards player Richard Tandy sadly passed away earlier this month - Jeff Lynne's right hand man in the studio and was still playing on tour until fairly recently... RIP Richard 😥

I used to play Face The Music regularly after getting home from school. The beautiful songs were like a warm salve, helping to heal me from any slings and arrows that I may have experienced that day. My school life was ok but Face The Music did help me after coming home after a not-so-good day. Waterfall coming in after Fire On High will always be high on my list of favourite ELO music. Thanx Tyler.

Waterfall has such a gorgeous vibe to it, one of my favourites off of Face the Music. I'd highly recommend you listen to their album Secret Messages next, it was the follow up album to Time and it has to be one of my favourite albums of theirs, plenty of amazing songs throughout. As always thanks for the video!

To follow the impactful opening instrumental "Fire on High" with this beautiful track only reinforces the sheer talent that is Jeff Lynne.

The song is perfectly crafted. The descending cords “pull you in and take you down” - like a waterfall.
Jeff has a great voice with near-perfect pitch as other musicians have said. He just doesn’t use it as the band’s showcase element as does, say, Freddy Mercury, Bono, Tom Petty, Rod Stewart, and others have. His voice is a “part of the whole,” yet would be sorely missed if not present.

Tyler, very stoked to have you back with more ELO! This song is beautiful, I'm glad you reacted to it. As for an ELO album to react to, you've only reacted to 5 of the 17 songs on their Platinum double-LP, *Out of The Blue,* so that would be great to do. And for the 5 tracks you've already reacted to -- *"Turn To Stone"*, *"Standin' In The Rain",* *"Big Wheels",* *"Summer and Lightning",* and, *"Mr. Blue Sky",* -- you could react to live performances of those songs when it's their turn. instead of the studio cuts which you've already done. If interested, let me know and I'll provide you with links to the best live versions of those songs. Most ELO fans consider it to be either the band's second best album (my opinion) or the band's best album. The only reason I'm not recommending you react to ELO best album, A New World Record, is because you've already reacted to 4 of the LP's 9 tracks, so only 5 of the songs would be new to you. Go with, *Out of The Blue,* there are plenty of new songs on there for you (12), and you'll love it!

Really glad your back with ELO. They are going to do a last tour of USA this year with a new album "Over and Out "Richard Tandy recently died in Wales. He was one of the founder members and Jeff's right hand man, until 2017 when he had to retire due to bad health. He is also the voice of "Mr Blue Sky " and of course the "Please Turn Me over " at the end of the song.

Note the crashing drums that punctuate the bit in the middle where it switches up. Jeff Lynne taught himself to play on a one string guitar that he "acquired" from a friend, hence that picked out guitar sound he uses so often including on the most recent material from 2019.

The instrumental opening to “Waterfall” is repeated later, with the full string section as an interlude just before “Strange Magic” on the original Face The Music album. This beautiful interlude rarely gets heard anymore unless you seek it out, as it’s never included with the song on the various hits compilations.

As much love as ELO has gotten over the years, I still think they come off as underrated. So many creative choices and sounds off of their more obscure work that few or no one will ever hear. It is astonishingly beautiful.

Great song, which follows on superbly from Fire on High. I think this is a brilliant album.
Glad to hear you continuing with ELO. I never tire of hearing them. You were right not to compare Jeff to anyone. He is unique, a real genius. In terms of other albums I can't remember if you have done anything from the Secret Messages album (Secret Messages, Bluebird, Four Little Diamonds, Rock and Roll is King) or from Balance of Power (So Serious, Sorrow About to Fall, Calling America). Zoom is an interesting album which I wasn't that keen on when it came out because it doesn't have all the strings and orchestra sounds of the earlier albums and if you expect it to be similar you will be disappointed, however it is an album that has grown on me over the years and one which I now play often particularly in the car. It shows a different phase in Jeff's life and is more akin to stuff he was doing with the Travelling Wilburys and other artists he was writing for and producing around that time. You might like it. I'd recommend Moment in Paradise and Stranger on a Quiet Street. 🙂

I think I’m right in saying that the background vocal ‘Face the mighty waterfall’ is reversed and played at the start of Down Home Town on the second side of the same album

Jeff Lynne has a ukelele that George Harrison gave him. Probably some YT clips of him playing it. I don't know if he ever played it on an official recording. Maybe on the Infinite Monkey Cage theme tune (that is a BBC radio science program). It was written by Eric Idle (of Monty Python fame) and he lived next door to Jeff.

@@paulmckearney4945 I remember the video of Jeff and George playing ukuleles together. But the sliding instrument featured in "Waterfall" is a clean (undistorted) electric slide guitar. I've duplicated it here at home. (I love playing slide guitar.)

@@paulmckearney4945 I remember the video of Jeff and George Harrison playing ukulele together. I don't recall Jeff ever credited with playing the uke on any recordings, but it's possible he did. The sliding string solo part that's featured throughout "Waterfall," however, is a clean (undistorted) electric slide guitar. I've duplicated it here at home. George Harrison famously featured slide guitar in a number of his songs including "Give Me Love." If you listen to the beginning of that song, you'll recognize the slide guitar as sounding very similar to that found in "Waterfall."
