  • In this video, Chuck demonstrates how to create a beautiful side-sewn leather scabbard for a sword. The primary advantage of using the side-sewn method is that it allows you to stamp, tool and decorate your scabbard, where a wet mold would not. With this design, you can customize your scabbard any way you like, and even match your scabbard to a favorite suit of armor! The creative possibilities are endless.

    Aw! C'mon, Chuck! You can't just leave us with a teaser like that at the end. A full suit of leather armor?! We need patterns, build videos, RenFair walkabouts showing it off!
    Beautiful work, sir. It was a speedy and thoroughly engrossing 47 minutes.

      lol 100 hours is nothing, i made a halfplate and it takes longer. especially with that level of art... unless... you were crazy enough to get this in die cut.

    I believe this is the first time we see you wearing this armour? It looks amazing!
    Also, an idea for a cool follow up - doing a scabbard/sheath for a curved single-edged blade, that still allows for tooling - I tried it several times, and doing a curved blade was always a huge pain

    • @mrchuck3338
      @mrchuck3338 Рік тому

      curved blades usually require an open necked scabbard when working in leather. In my humble finding anyway.

    Question: Will the bent prongs scratch against the sword blade?

  • @BillyBlaze7
    @BillyBlaze7 Рік тому

    Im curious if there is a way to calculate the amount of depth the welt needs to be in relation to the distal taper of the sword blade, since a lot of swords are thicker in the center part. I wonder if you split the difference of the height of the blade if that would make it too tight, maybe divide the height of the blade and reduce it by a 1/4?
    I am curious because I have a sword like this and have been thinking of making a sheath for it, maybe its best to wet form around the blade since its thicker in the center?

    So how about stitching leather over a wood scabbard? I've always wanted to do my own wood core scabbard. But I have no idea how I should stitch on that leather.

    • @kmersmann8040
      @kmersmann8040 Рік тому

      That sounds awesome! Could you cement the dyed and tooled but unfinished leather to the wood? then after that sets up, if you did a colored antiquing it would go down into the groove line and you could run the stitching spacer to make faux stitch lines... Then maybe if you put spots or rivets on, you could go all the way through the wood for a little extra mounting stability so everything stays together even if the cement eventually works loose?? Idk if that would work, but it works in my head.lol. i don't know how to satisfy the edges though...maybe if the wood was edge painted prior to the leather being attached...or wrap the leather around the edge 😬 just my brainstorming. Would any of that work??

      Chech this out,
      ua-cam.com/video/Lq9GHJqHn5U/v-deo.html
      Adam savage does a similar build like your talking. Not with stitching but you could always use a slightly thicker veg tan & leave a ¼" overhang on it & stitch it up. Or wrap the entire thing & stitch in the back. Hope this helps. 😁👍

    How will the scabbard fixed / hung up to a belt?

    • @WeaverLeatherSupply
      @WeaverLeatherSupply  Рік тому

      You can make a belt loop on the back panel but a better way, and the traditional way, to connect a sword to a belt is a “frog”. These come in all shapes and sizes. We have a video on a matching sword and dagger frog, here is a link to that... www.weaverleathersupply.com/collections/sword-and-dagger-frogs
