Watching your earlier videos on making scabbards inspired me to give it a try. I have a stage sword and dagger purchased at a Renaissance Festival year ago that didn't have a sheath or scabbard and while they aren't as nice as that Albion long sword if figured what the heck. I didn't incorporate a belt into the sword scabbard but using a couple of frogs.they are functional. Your videos are easy for knucklehead like myself to follow. Love your work keep it up!

I'd argue you do NOT want the sword to fall out when the scabbard is inverted. The last thing you want is for a sharp sword to suddenly be dropping out, point up. I use the steamed and bent method for cores and found that with a little effort, you can find a good balance between hold and ease of drawing.

Thanks for posting this video. I watched this one and the the scabbard tutorial for the one hand sword scabbard. I have a lot of red oak wood boards from a boat project and was thinking of using that wood as a core for a long sword scabbard. I was wondering if you ever tried using oak wood before.
Don't forget about the examples of cloth-lined scabbards. The thin lining often made up for inaccuracies in the inletting while still allowing for a good fit along the length of the blade.
I have a few lined scabbards it's more so to do with side to side rattle in some Cases. Even in a perfect scabbard if there isn't a liner they can still rattle a tad side to side. Depends what the liner is as well. I've heard certain types of pelts were used due to helping with waterproofing the scabbard.

I think the only thing I’ve heard you say about getting the right size is that it’s tricky, but you haven’t really given guidance on how to actually do that.
Aside from that, how do you get the point sewn without it looking crumby?
I have been debating making a belt attachment point for one of my scabbards, but it doesnt have any risers on it. (Kingston Arms arming sword). Not sure if I should do this style with the two ties, or I ahve seen a similar style that has just the top knot (this holds the sword a bit more vertical)
With dying the leather it tends to be harder using a sponge since the dye soaks into it and you can't work it in as well. So a good thing to do is use a rag like part of an old tee shirt and apply the dye to it and work it in or put some dye onto the leather and then work it with the rag
For your leather molding! Instead of using your fingers, get a bone folder! Makes it way easier
scabbards are important since they make swords wearable.

What thickness leather do you use?
Hello. I am wondering what "weight" you used for the sword straps. I am looking to do a knotted sword belt on a scabbard I have that came with a sword, but the belt I have may be a bit too thick for it.
I would probably use 4-5 oz. vegetable tanned leather for straps, and perhaps 6-7 oz. leather for the belt. You would probably find that 4-5 oz. leather for the whole project is sufficient. I’d love to hear how it turns out!

So, you don't want a drop of glue to be seen because it "would look too modern", and then you _deliberately_ leave the lighter sides of modern leather vissible because "it looks better"? Dude, since that *SCREAMS* _chrome-tanned_ (read: modern) _leather,_ I hope you realize you earned yourself a snark.
Not sure you understand the difference between the dying process for chrome tanned leather and veg tanned. Chrome tanned leather is immersed in large tubs (you can Google it) and it receives an even distribution of dye. So, no, I would have to disagree with your assessment.
@@MattsGreatHall I'm talking of exactly what I've written: leaving the surface dyed and the sides and back undied makes it look _exactly_ as modern chrome-tanned leather, which as you surely know does look that way. Enjoy your well-deserved snark for going out of your way to make good leather look like cheap one.
