  • This is the original Macintosh floppy version of Cyan's first game, an adventure game for children called The Manhole. It was created by brothers Rand and Robyn Miller of "Myst" fame, and released for the Mac's HyperCard software in 1988. It is running here on System 3.0 and HyperCard 1.01.
The game was re-released on CD-ROM by Activision one year later, with additional Redbook music tracks. It saw ports with colour graphics to MS-DOS (1989), Fujitsu FM Towns (1990), and NEC PC Engine CD (1991), the latter two with a choice of Japanese or English texts and voices. An improved edition titled "The Manhole: New and Enhanced" was released for MS-DOS and Windows 3.1 in 1992. The heavily extended CD-ROM Masterpiece Edition with pre-rendered 3D graphics in the style of Myst was released for Windows and Macintosh in 1995.
Cyan would create two more adventure games for children-"Cosmic Osmo and the Worlds Beyond the Mackerel" and "Spelunx and the Caves of Mr. Seudo"-before landing their smash hit "Myst" in September 1993.

The game that taught me the word "indubitably." The nostalgia is deep here.

Anyone remember clicking on one of the portraits in the ship and having it say, "Indubitably"? I always found it so amusing as a kid, and can still hear it in my head to this day anytime I come across that word lol.

This game sparked parts of imagination as a child. I'm not too grown to proudly say how much fun I had playing this with my mom after she got home from work at night when I was little. "Oh my, there's a tiny boat in my tea cup." Lol

Lol parts of this simple game were quite thrilling and mysterious to me when I was little as well. To be young with an overactive imagination.

This was one of my favoritest games on my family's old '84 Mac. It's just not the same in the updated color version. Thanks for confirming my memories of this game as being MUCH different in the original. It was a lot more interactive, with more stuff to do. I heard there was a deluxe version of this game in the original, where you could click on the alien spaceship and go to more world with more trippy adventures.

I can see how this inspired MYST, it's the same bloody engine from the looks of things.

Video games were so much better back then 1.) More was left to the imagination. The adventure element was there 2.) Expectations were still low, as far as current gaming went, so everything was awesome 3.) We were young and more impressionable. There was a "purity" about gaming in general 4.) Strategy guides and spoilers weren't a thing

There was a shareware Hypercard sorta-game called "Sea Dreams" that I now realize had to have been completely inspired by this first edition of manhole. It was a good deal more surreal and bawdy than this, but nowhere as extensive and non-linear.

I don't know why and I don't know if this was even intentional from Cyan at the time, but looking at the first frame of the game, the iconic manhole and the hydrant, I can't help but think of the opening line of The Hobbit, by J.R.R. Tolkien: "In a hole in the ground there lived a hobbit". That's it. Tolkien's legendarium is gigantic, but it all started from that one line, from that one hole in the ground. And just like that, this game has a massive world to explore, and it all starts from a hole in the ground.

Well, this is the oldest piece of nostalgia that I can clearly remember experiencing.. I think he was working on the game? maybe a port? I mean I was tiny in 1988 and I remember it being more around.. 1990 or so. I definitely at some point got the impression this was something he was working on.
