  • Testing the Intel Core i5-12400F six core 12-thread CPU in 10 popular and demanding games in 2024, using an RX 6900 XT discrete GPU.
    Perhaps as a side effect of being in the PC enthusiast bubble, I’m guilty of ignoring the Intel i5-12400F. Whether for its lack of E-cores or multiplier overclocking, there’s something about the vanilla i5s that just makes them seem boring. Well, after randomly buying one on a whim, I can tell you that it’s… really good, actually.

      I think it's a good thing that the CPU market isn't totally monopolized by a single company, and is more divided as it is currently. I like to see competitiveness, gives us better products. You could probably snag a 32gb kit for the price of a 5600mhz kit of 16gb of ddr5 (at least where I live). IMO, the extra memory is better than the added speed

    • @nepnep6894
      @nepnep6894 23 дні тому +2

      Do not go for 3600 DDR4, get cheaper DDR5 instead. Locked ADL and RPL skus have a locked VCCSA voltage basically making anything above 3200 gear1 down to the silicon lottery. DDR5 doesn't seem to care as much and you can do even 7200 on some 12400 just fine. If you enable XMP for anything above 3200 in almost every scenario you will actually be slower by default since it will halve your IMC clockspeed. With DDR5 speeds gear2 is fine, but at slower speeds like 3600 this is a problem.

    I needed an igpu to get started so bought the i5 12500 (was only 10 euros more than the 12400 and better igpu) and I can confidently say this CPU has more than enough power for my usage, and probably will for many years.
    And it may sound weird, but I actually like these CPUs with only P cores. They feel "clean". Knowing everything will always run on a good fast core is nice, even if e cores are pretty powerful nowadays and it probably doesn't matter.

I had to invest in a slab of ptm 7950 and a thermal right peerless assassin and still see 70c in some titles. I'm running h670 so my ram is the only thing overclocked. Intel 6th gen Skylake was great architecture after that they just pushed to the limit the same thing. Same thing happened with 12th Alder-Lake - great new architecture, and now we see the same in that sense that intel just milks with 13 and 14gen to instability levels.

    Best budget Intel chip of the past 10 yrs imo, bcoz it actually has a reliable upgrade path (up to 14th gen) if you choose your mobo right. I went with a B660 pro bcoz it has enough vrm power for an i9 later, but that'll be crazy on a locked mobo, so I'd go with an i7 14th gen in a few yrs👍

    The 12400f is a solid if boring cpu, but depending on prices, I prefer to recommend the 12600kf, it's usually $20-30 higher, and you get those 4 cute little efficiency cores for extra processing power. But, if it's significantly cheaper, there's no reason to not, at least, consider the 12400f.
