Taylor thanks for making this video. I’ve been wanting to get a tone that brings the rawness of 90’s brutal death metal while maintaining the note clarity
Axefx and Mooer Ge 200 sounds similar with Stock IR , But I like the HX stomp's sound all the way . I own the Mooer Ge 200 and won't say it's bad , it's really cool and With some tweaking you can get out the sounds you desire .
I have hated the HX Stomp in all of these tests so far, but it slayed in this one. Once again, the stock Ampero IR sounded fizzy. The Mooer sounded pretty good in this one too. The custom IR made all of them sound much better.
One thing I've noticed in most of these shootouts is that the Axefx and the Mooer tend more toward that processed tone, a little more mid range, everything just sounds "good" on them. Then the Helix and Ampero have more of an airy, sometimes fizzy in the high end sound, but then also sound more aggressive/grunty because of it. Sometimes that sounds more "amp-like", and like they give more of the real amp's character, which gives more variety to the tones. All sounded great here, especially with your IR, but its just something I've noticed and commented in previous videos. It seems like the companies have 2 camps they tend toward. Axe Fx and Mooer sound like everything is more polished and the Helix and Ampero sound more raw, in general. Either could be good or bad depending on what you're looking for. Still, neat stuff. I vote Engl next! I love the Engl Savage, but any one would work. Lol
Another awesome comparison man! Cool idea showing the amp settings, so we can try and replicate the core tone. What's your preferred boost on each modeler? I liked the Ampero a lot, tho I own a GE200. And btw, thanks for sharing your IR with us :) I got it from your 5150 comparison video and I have to say... Dude, how? I don't get it... I tried so many cab IRs so far and nothing came even close to what I wanted. But your IR fit like a glove... We all chase that sound in our heads, and your IR was right in there... The sound I go was so wide and rich I couldn't believe it. No 2.2khz mess, no 4khz mess, just pure awesomeness. Thanks again mate, and keep this up, you've became my favorite UA-cam guitarist.
Dude, thank you so much!! 🙌 I'm glad you enjoy the IR. I spent a lot of time picking my cabinets (even from other Mesa cabs), and these 2 just sounded best to my ears, so Im glad I can digitally recreate and share them!
@@TaylorDanley I'm sharing your videos on the Mooer GE200 Facebook group in the hope that more of us GE users benefit from your awesome tones. I do hope they sub as well :)
Revv Red Channel would be a cool shoot out!!! I’m really new to modelling, recently reconnected with my love of music in a huge way and started playing guitar and seriously practicing, I also have a spinal injury and the Marshall JCM2000 TSL60H and 2X12 cab that I bought brand new in high school is impossible for me to pick up or move anywhere not to mention that since having kids I haven’t been able to push the volume up to the #2 position (not 2 o’clock) before being told it’s way too loud so After watching hours of reviews and comparisons on UA-cam and such I got the HX Stomp I never would have believed that modelling would sound that good and with a little tweaking I’ve gotten some awesome tones my only gripe with it is that it should have the Pod Go form factor with the built in expression pedal amd the Pod Go have the Stomps I feel like it should have the ability of giving you half of the helix blocks because it’s got half the dsp the 6 block limit is a bit annoying when it can do more and even if the 8 blocks with 3.0 is true from what I understand it is still being limited compared with what one one of the dsp chips of the full helix is capable of doing that gripe aside I am super happy with the unit and I’m also a new subscriber here and I’m liking your content keep up the good work
Hey guys, thanks so much for watching. If you haven't already, make sure to SUBSCRIBY for +10 INT Edit: Also, I completely forgot to mention an important detail. I boosted all of the amp sims with the built in ts808's in each of the units! Gain 0, Tone 5, Vol 10!
Fractal, all day, by a good amount for my tastes. The other's lack some of the low end thump and roar that is a vital part of what makes the JCM800 so awesome (I like them so much that I own two). And a couple have a bit of weirdness in the high end as well. Also, finally made a decision on which modeller to go with, and have a FM3 on the way!
It does sound the most like a real JCM. It needs just a tiny bit more high-end sizzle. I personally hate the JCM in the Helix. It's my least favorite amp sim in the unit by far. In this shootout its 2nd place though. Prob due to the IR.
I like all of these suggestions! I've actually already filmed and tracked next weeks, but I will more than likely add these to a poll for the following week!
As usual, great comparison video! Man, the Ampero sounds full on black metal! \m/ I'll test ou those settings tonight, see how they compare to my current JCM settings.
Taylor, it seems to me like the common settings for all units is working against some. Not all the units use the same response to the controls so they will sound significantly different. Going back to my comment with the last one. How about trying to dial in your best tone with your reference unit, say the AxeFX III and then try to get all of the other ones to sound as close as you can to see if they can get to that same level. You could try doing the same but with a different one as the 'standard' one. I believe you will find that they can all produce nearly the exact same tone.
I feel like the AMpero always needs a parametric EQ to detect and filter out the harsh frequencies. Awesome Video.. Do all these Units have a Bogner Überschall simulation? That'd be interesting
Yeah, it definitely helps to cut the high end. May be a case if it's better to have it and not need it, than need it and not have it? I'm not sure if they do, I'll have to check
On the Ampero using a custom IR... make sure your microphone setting is "off" or it will badly color the sound (at least for these comparisons, that color can be great when dialing in tones.)
Great comparison! Loved hearing the stock IR’s and then the custom IR’s. The biggest improvement was the Mooer. I own the GE150 and will definitely hunt down some to load into the unit! I’ll let you know if I get the same improvement with this one.
Taylor Danley That’s awesome! I’ll let you know how I like them in the GE 150. I’m pretty sure that all the Mooer units are basically the same at the core of the processing.
I honestly like the way you did the Soldano demo.....all modelers and amp using the same cab ir.....really shows the real differences. My $.02. I’d like to see another demo with the 800’s like that one day 🙏🏼
With Custom IRs the Axe FX III sounded best to me in the mix. The Axe FX III unfortunately doesn't have default IRs for Amps, You have to audition several of them to find the right match for the amp and it can get overwhelming quickly. I wish they had a default in order to at least provide a starting point for new users.
Hi Taylor, Thanks for the video. After watching all the comparison videos I am surprised that the Axe III sounds as muffled and has less dynamics/articulation than the rest (at least to my ears). It's surprising for a gear that expensive and endorsed by many pro musicians. I've never owned a Fractal product, but is there a chance that some global settings need to be tweaked, for example tweaking the instrument and line impedance on my HX Stomp makes a lot of difference. Again I'm not implying that you don't know your stuff far from it, it's just that I'm really really surprised.
Should I buy the Line6 POD HD500X in 2020? I’m currently using a Zoom G3Xn. I’m really confused and I’m on a budget. I want to record with my gear and use it live as well. Helix and Axe FX are way out of my budget😢
Nice! I think as far as stock IRs, the Helix sounded best to me. With your custom IR, the Axe FX and Helix were pretty close, and honestly would be hard to tell the difference in a blind shootout. One thing I noticed is that your Axe FX with the stock IR seems a little boxy, and I'm wondering if you maybe have the power amp simulation turned off, for running into your PowerStage 700? Could have just been that IR, but that's what it sounds like to me. Regardless, it was a great video! Keep it up!
All simulation is ON with stock IR. I actually never turn the power amp emulation off, since the PS700 is solid state and flat response (mostly). I know what you mean, not sure why it sounds that way.
Great demo, they all sound good but the Axe and HX are in a different league. I think the Axe sounds better with the stock IR but adding the custom IR really brings the HX and Axe closer to each other so I really would see no reason to go for the Axe personally. Also, anyone else notice the high pitched whine in the background of the Axe when it is solo'd at 09:40 ?
for me hx stomp is the winner.then ge200.axe fx did gd but sounded bassy.maybe a tweak in the eq can fix it.ampero seems to be the next mt2 wanna be..but above all really like the comparison.great video.kindly do some on rectifier n bogner plz
Is it just me or do the AxeFX and the GE200 sound similar to each other with the stock IR? With custom IR the Hx Stomp and the AxeFX sounded similar to each other.
I'm debating the headrush or the ge250. I did a poll a while back, and I know people want the headrush, but I'm leaning ge250 🤔. I was really underwhelmed with the elevenrack back in the day. 🤷♂️
Well, maybe they were modeling a modified JCM 800. I have two sitting right next to me and they don`t sound anything like that. Stock JCM 800`s don`t have near that much gain (that`s why guys like Lee Jackson and Mike Soldano modded them all the time back in the day). A JCM 900 (which I also have) can do that gain structure no problem. I even played along with your video with a stock 800. Not even remotely in the ball park. Good video though. Thx.
Ampero sounded too fizzy (I believe because of their take on the Mesa cab)... I think it can sound much more like the hx stomp which sounded very good but nothing like a real Jcm800 with that Mesa cab (v30's).
What surprises me so far in most of these comparisons is that the Axe Fx3 has a substantial mid boost compared to the other modellers. It does make it a tad more articulate, but is it accurate? Looking forward to that 5150 comparison in the future to verify!
Another aspect why including a real „vintage“ JCM 800 in such a shoot-out is not a good idea: Old 2203s and 2204s from the early 80s can sound RADICALLY different from unit to unit. Production tolerances, different tubes, differently biased, you name it. My two best mates and I all have 2203s from back in the day, and when we run them side-by-side, you probably wouldn‘t think they are the same amp type, even though none of them have a modded signal path / are hot-rodded. Mine, for instance, is fiercely bright, while one of the others is a lot darker and chunkier sounding. Based on their serials, the two amps where produced some 6 to 8 week apart from one another in ´82... The third sounds more like Eddie Van Halen‘s 1959 SL in that it has this vaguely fuzzish, grainy drive texture that the other two lack completely. Built in ´83.
I know this is true, and can explain differences in amp modelers as well, but everyone always wants to hear the real amp side by side. I think the idea is that more to see what differences there are in terms of digital vs analog processing, not just tone. I do have one coming in soon for a blind shootout, should be fun!
I don't get setting all the models to the same settings. Those settings are almost certainly not going to sound the best on all amp models. If you want to do a true comparison, dial in the best tone on each,, then compare.

Sometimes, yes
The IR file isn't available anymore. Can you re-share the link?
What Z parameter (distance between the mic and the cab) is set to in Ampero stock IRs? Default 75 or 0?
Closer to 15. I usually set to 0, then pull back to taste. Typically end up somewhere around 15-20.
