@@DupontandLowesWarrior well, one reason is they ain't painted anymore... they're wrapped, of course it won't look as good. just one of many ways they've become "fake". maybe not the right word, but nothing like they were in the 90's, and that's why it sucks now.
A solid race from the 90s....in full 60 FPS.
NASCAR seriously needs a streaming service. I can watch these all day. All the other races on YT in murky 30 FPS can only satisfy so much.
I miss old Bristol. 36° banking and the old grandstands were such an awesome look. The stadium now is cool and all but this is when Bristol was at its peak imo.
Lol it never had 36° banking. When they did the remeassure in the early 2000's before the repair it was discovered that briatol was always 32°. Giving talladega the distinction as the steepest banked oval.
It was also a stadium by 1999😂

BP is by far my fav of all time. He has many of the greatest commentator moments of all time. The way he talks about the race during the race when its happening in real time is priceless. He really was full of a lot of energy and life. He is still missed by many today. I know I miss him. RIP ol BP

A great driver and even better announcer. He could bring excitement and interest in a race with the leader 2 laps ahead. He, along with Ned Jarrett, really made the sport for people just being introduced to the sport. NASCAR owes a lot to this man.

It was a cheap move. Labonte should have filed an objection but was to much of a nice guy to do so.
@@davethompson3140 Dale had only done that move 1000 times....people knew it. Ask Darryl Waltrip.haha. I watched it when it happened, I still was not happy. Dale was beaten by a better strategy for sure and did the Intimidator thing to steal a win.
@@zublacus -I think it’s one of the worse things I ever saw in NASCAR. It’s beyond me how they allow a guy to intentionally spin out a guy then give him the win especially if they’re so concerned about driver safety. Even the guy behind Earnhardt at the flag hit him in disgust.

I watched this race when I was 5 with my grandpa. He died when I was 12. I remember him screaming in anger when lobonte passed dale, and yelling with excitement when Dale spun him around. Dale Jarrett was his favorite but he was still happy to see the Intimidator take a win when Jarret couldn't.
Two things I remember about this race like it was yesterday.
The first was obviously the ending but the second was my now wife and I getting doused with beer by the Earnhardt fans sitting directly behind us jumping up and down celebrating the victory.
This race is an all-time classic race yet only 7 cars finished on the lead lap. Just goes to show you don't need the manipulation of Lucky Dogs and Wave Arounds to keep everyone on the lead lap to have a great race.

Wave arounds and lucky dogs are for safety, not race manipulation. This race would have been completely different if DW didn't wreck Terry racing him back to the yellow.
There will never be a breed of drivers like these guys ever again. They are what made it so great.
I agree 80 s 90 s even early 2000s were outlaws and badasses , now these racers are dbags who look like geek squad employees and 3/4 of them are spoiled kids whos daddys and grand daddys bought them a car. Most of these drivers don t know what its like to spend your rent $ on tires and using bill $ to enter the race. Dale was the epitome of a real blue collar racer. I can t even watch the sht they call racing now and the rule changes and the racist pos Bubbles who loves attention is just a joke..
They’ve made the cars too easy to drive compared to back in the days no way these guys could drive 80’s 90’s era cars also I hate the lack of personality nowadays sure it’s a few guys but back then we had guys who had charisma on and off the track. That’s what made racing so entertaining back then you had guys like terry labonte who stayed out of trouble and raced smart guys like markmartin who raced clean no matter what guys like Jeff Gordon and rusty who didn’t back down from anyone guys like dale Jarrett or Ricky Rudd who were just born tough as nails and raced same way guys like Earnhardt or spencer who were aggressive I could go on but I mean drivers now are not just boring off track but race like robots on the track it’s nothing exciting and thrilling

It's because it was on ESPN and they tended to broadcast in better quality than other sports broadcasts at the time. If you had Dish or something similar it was probably looking like this when you watched it.
Fun fact: Earnhardt suffered a hard crash at Atlanta at the beginning of the season, this cause a little bit of bone in his neck to pinch his nerves, he didn’t get his neck fixed because the surgery was risky and Earnhardt didn’t want to miss a race, so he was one handing the steering wheel every race after the Atlanta race including this one.

@@fifty3843 Yea, it's true. Dale didn't really start to recover until the next year when he started to return to form. He had gotten healthy and was winning races again and finishing well in races he didn't win. Then...well...we know what happened

Man. Everything about this race was awesome. The TV crew, the drivers, the paint schemes, night time at Bristol, and my favorite driver winning.

Yeah, he just rattled Terry's cage by deliberately dumping him. He received a vast majority of boos from the crowd including Earnhardt fans and from disapproval of the broadcasters for his action. Typical Earnhardt. His explanation with his patented 'cat ate the bird' smirk on his face. Straight out lied when he said he just meant to rattle Terry's cage. Everyone saw that deliberate take out. He earned some respect for his driving ability but none for his dirty driving tactics. He's the number one on the NASCAR list of dirtiest drivers.

Miss these days, no bs, good racing, evidence is in the crowd vs. Today
Loved Earnhardt's comments a few days after the race. Someone asked him about all the boos he got in victory lane and he said "If they're not cheering for me, then they'd better be booing me." Truth is, I believe him when he said he wasn't trying to wreck him. Of course he was trying to knock him out of the way as had been done many times before and since (see Gordon/Rusty for just a couple examples) but I have no belief whatsoever he intended to tear up Terry's or anybody else's car. I also find it funny that so many people cite this race as an example of what a dirty driver Earnhardt was, yet no one cites Petty, Pearson, Yarborough, Waltrip, Allison, Gordon, Wallace, Busch, or anyone else who does the same thing as being dirty drivers.

Those other drivers never intentionally wrecked a guy to win a race... Earnhardt made a career out of it. I personally don’t think it’s cool to wreck others to win a race, then have the Gaul to call yourself “the intimidator”. Should have called himself “the wrecker”

Part of me says Dale would’ve hit him in the quarter panel if he wanted to wreck him. But part of me says there’s no way he was going to let somebody beat him because of new tires.

So, just bump him out of the way cause he's got better tires? Quarter panel? He *knew* that all he had to do was touch Terry in the turn to do it. Yeah, sure, he was the Intimidator but that was just crap.
And 100% of me says he hit him exactly where he wanted to, and exactly where he needed to, to be able to say later it wasn't on purpose. :) Shadows of controversy almost always loom around the greatest drivers.

Dale had an unfair handicap pitting on the back. He had to bump and run due to the old tires he had because of a choice he had to make due to the handicap. He did what he had to do to win.
Even with the sorta ugly finish, this was a fantastic race overall. Those last fifteen laps or so are still so exciting to watch, even knowing the result won’t change over twenty years later. Bob Jenkins, Benny Parsons and Ned Jarrett in the booth were also magical for this period of time.
Ned was also magical with Mike Joy and Buddy Baker

It was the perfect bump and run if Terry had held it. "He had stickers didn't he?" 😅
Once Labonte doored Earnhardt on the front-stretch coming to the white, what did Terry expect?. That's why he drove deep into turn 1 and bottomed out. Earnhardt got back to him and the rest is history.
One of the better rationalizations, but no less of one, in defense of the "when-I-do-it-it's-different" i.e. "it's not wrecking when someone makes 'racing' contact to me first, then I just don't let off in the corner and spin/wreck him" Dale Earnhardt, Sr. school of thinking.
If the positions had been reversed that night, Earnhardt fan's engines would sound quite different.
@@michaellavin6417 What you don't realize is that a lesser or average driver would have hit the wall when Terry body slammed Dale coming to the white flag out of turn four. Dale saved it and you can watch it with him working the steering wheel which is an awesome view.
If Nascar went back to this they would fill every seat, there is just enough grit still left
There were boos everywhere that night and my family wasn't too happy about it either, I didn't really care at the time 'cause it was Dale, I knew he was gonna do what it took to win no matter what. My uncle always said, he isn't a guy you want to have is second spot with a race on the line. Dale appealed to so many people, the guys working in the field and the guys that worked all day and hunted and fished and Dale did that too and also happened to drive fast cars for a living and people loved him for that and they were proud to be "Number 3 Men" because they had someone who talked like them. Dale Earnhardt is irreplaceable, while he is no longer with us he is still a legend, and his exploits on the track are still fresh in our memories.

Our very first Bristol Night Race, I'll never forget it. I took my dad who usually is pretty quiet and reserved and when we walked out of the tunnel high up in turn 2 and he saw inside Bristol for the first time, it was the only time I've ever heard him say, "This is awesome!"

I was extremely fortunate as a kid to fall right into being a huge fan around that time, oblivious at the time to the fact that this was one hell of an era. 96-03 was when I was a diehard fan before losing interest

Back when NASCAR was worth watching every week, back when some of the legends of the 80's were still involved, and a lot of young faces that are now retired, or retiring. Bristol and Talladega have always been my favorite two races.

Labonte’s line was better were he says, essentially, Dale always says that when he’s wrecking someone.
Best race I ever went to! I got to meet Mark Martin, Dale Earnhardt, Richard Petty and others that weekend. I bought an infield/pit pass and I will Never Forget it... Racing just isn't the same Anymore.
This Race gets better and better every time I watch it!
I can’t tell you how much this race is imbedded into my brain. Thought it was the coolest thing I seen at 9 years old when I was a huge Earnhardt fan

I was born in 86 and we grew up on 90s nascar we never missed a race and this race brings back so much memories as the greatest decade of NASCAR was coming to a end rip dale love you Texas terry

Well its a good reason to not slack behind or be slow because you only get those pits if you are not as fast as the others in qualify.

To this day it still makes me laugh that whenever nascar shows this they never show Terry Labonte actually hits Dale 1st not once not twice but 3 times. But that never gets shown.

When referring to "body slammed" it means that Terry took his car and hit it up against Dale's hard and it almost put Dale into the wall. Dale saved it one handed though. LOL at rubbing is racing. If that's what makes you happy. In this case one hit deserved another. That's actually the defense that RChildress used after the race with NASCAR and because of it they ultimately upheld the win for Earnhardt. He won it pitting from the backstretch. Very impressive Intimidator.

The only one I'd argue with you is the mandatory finish under green cause that can lead to exciting finishs

I was born in 88 and was 11 years old so i remember watching this race. Gordon, Labonte and Earnhardt Sr and Jr in the busch series were my favorite drivers. I didnt say anytning when he spun Terry. Just gave the tv the finger and went to bed lol

This is a great race at Bristol from 1999 that Dale Earnhardt won and that was a fantastic win for him and I'm glad Nascar let him have the win

The Bristol day race was my 1st live race..big 3 fan..he started last watching him drive to top 10..jus didn't have front pits either that race..but rusty was above everyone that day
When it was all said and done there were 23 combined championships by drivers in this race.

He was trying for the bump and run. I’m just glad I was lucky enough to be able to go to races and be at this one during the best time in nascar racing.

I know he wrecked him but like Terry drove into the previous corner so deep he hit earnhardt up the track. He knew it was coming back at him which is why he was so high up the track when he hit him back

Jimmy just wasn't sure the race was over for sure...lol. My favorite Jimmy Spencer related memory was when the starter said "Gentlemen and Jimmy Spencer start your engines."
Can you imagine how many more races Earnhardt could have won had he been a better qualifier. The fact that he was in a position to boot Terry out of the way for the win is really a testament to him and his pit crew considering he pitted on the back row.
Hard to believe Dale was gone less than a year and a half later
A lot of People had something to say about this Finish, but Terry made solid contact that could have sent Dale around just as easy a turn before. That was stupid, you don't pull that kinda sh*t with Dale Earnhardt, it's just not a good idea.
