Do you know why Mahoraga was shadow boxing during the fight with Sukuna? If you watch the Blu-ray version that has been blowing up on the internet, you would notice that Mahoraga was punching air for a while. Some people might be confused as why it did such a useless move in the middle of the fight, but if you go read the fucking manga, you will know that Mahoraga was not only able to see Sukuna’s technique, “but it can also deflect” the slashes of the King of curses. This is actually a major change in the anime version prior to the manga as Mahoraga’s ability was made more reasonable, it needs multiple wheel spins in order to adapt to Sukuna’s technique, just like in the fight with Gojo where it needed 5 spins, but in the original version Mahoraga just needed 1 spin and deflect Sukuna’s slashes, then yeeted him across the map. Complicated techniques takes multiple spins where as simpler techniques takes few spins...this was well explained in the manga
Do you remember the chapter? I was theorizing that the fewer spins was because Sukuna had just 16 fingers, but what you said makes more sense.

But since cleave and dismantle are just slashing techniques , it just takes 1 spin to adapt .
Where as Limitless technique consists of
Blue , Red , Infinity barrier , and hollow . All are different applications of limitless and is a complicated technique in itself. So Maho needs more spins to adapt to Gojo's limitless...(5 spins I think)
Sukuna CT got revealed which is Shrine and not cleave and dismantle.
It may be the case that cleave and dismantle may be just one aspect of his technique which is why it got adapted faster in just 1 spin.( But it is just a theory at this point)

Mahoraga wasn’t deflecting anything. Once sukuna realized mahoraga was adapting to his slashes, he started feinting to confuse him. Mahoraga would swing at the air to use his severed limb as a projectile. After doing that a few times sukuna started feinting and mahoraga adapted to the feints and also started feinting.
I know this was the reason given by the director or whatever but its such bs. It does make maho look weak and with the bad animation its hard to follow

The scene wasn't even hard to follow, you could clearly see Mahoraga boxing air to predict the slashes as Sukuna is faking him out by pointing his finger at him. It's not bs at all, the directior's explanation just shines more light onto the context of this scene.
And just because the shading or animation style doesn't fit your taste, doesn't mean it's bad. If this is bad animation then stop watching most anime in general, go back to Demon Slayer, Fate and KyoAni animes if you wanna watch anime's with "Decent" animation. Because if Sukuna vs Mahoraga is bad, then their animation is just decent to good levels.

I mean, that doesn't really matter, Mahoraga isn't really sentient it's just following a basic set of programming to adapt to then counter attacks thrown at it until it kills the ritual invoker. It's way more dangerous when it has someone actually commanding it.
Nothing Mahoraga does here really has a chance of harming Sukuna, he's just playing around with it because he has an interesting opponent, in much the same way he didn't just open with DE on Jogo or just instantly atomize him with the Fire Arrow.

The animation studio posted a storyboard about the sequence and in the notes it said Magoraha was throwing all of those punches as means to launch his arms at sukuna in case he throws a slash that would cut them off.
This right here is exactly why Demon Slayer makes their slashes and moves with special effects because the moment the author says you cannot physically “see” this move and the people watching can’t see it, they say it’s dumb. Of course you can’t see it. It’s unseeable. That’s why Sukuna said his line with excitement.

The *real* reason in the Anime was that Mahoraga couldn't tell whether Sukuna would throw out a feign or not, Sukuna was bullying Mahoraga by waving his hands and posing while not actually attacking or lightly waving his hand when the Dismantle that followed was devastating. This was confusing Mahoraga to the point that he Adapted to Sukuna's fighting style and throwing his own feign attack, which is why you can see Sukuna smile before he is hit in the Blu-Ray, because he believes he corrupted Mahoraga's "Divine" status by teaching him out to Lie via fakeouts.

I think he was referring to how many spins Maho daddy needed to adapt and deflect the slashes. In manga, Maho daddy just needed 1 spin and play with Goatkuna but in anime, 3 spins were needed

There's a video about it but the gist of it is in the title"Sukuna taught Mahoraga how to lie". After Mahoraga adapts to the original slashes Sukuna starts mixing in faints between his attacks. Then Mahoraga starts learning how to react to faints and start throwing his own. This is the process of Mahoraga learning how to properly react to faints while Sukuna is pretty much just taunting him by throwing faints
the REAL reason why Mahoraga was shadow boxing was because Sukuna was faking those slashes but Mahoraga doesn't know when the real slashes were coming hence why he started shadow boxing, hoping to either deflect it or to throw its severed body parts towards Sukuna.
This was Sukuna testing how Mahoraga worked. He tested whether the adaptation was to the motion of the attack, the attack itself, or the combination of attack and motion. In the end he just adapts to the attacks regardless of motion.

When he's shadow boxing in the blue ray it shows Sukuna faking him out, so hes punching so if any of the fakes are actual slashes his dismembered arm would be propelled at Sukuna. The multiple spins are adapting to the fakeouts, strategy, and technique of Sukuna. Thats why Mahoraga ends up fakeouting Sukuna when he gut punches him.

Mahoragas technique is to be able to adapt to any and all phenomena ( not cursed techniques phenomena )
Sukunas have two two types of slashes and his domain is also slashes so Maho adapted to getting sliced and counteres that way cleave, dismantle and his domain
So why does he need 4 spins to adapt to limitless because limitless create 4 phenomena blue,red,hollow,infinity.

Also, with the storyboard release, we learned Sukuna was faking out Maharaga on when he would strike with Slash. So Maharaga was trying to predict it with the shadow boxing. (He used his limbs as a projectile twice in a fight, hence the shadow boxing, they get cut, they become projectiles)
Yeah it was trying to force Sukuna into a lose lose scenario, If he strikes it will attempt to counter and reflect his attack, if that fails then it’s limbs will be flung as Sukuna anyway.
The real spicy question is if sukuna is feinting his attacks because he anticipated that.

We usually get indicators for his technique and usually we can always see it, so I don’t blame people for not getting it. (The clearest example is his domain slashes which we “shouldn’t be able to see” but we can because we are the audience, and people are used to that, and not them showing what’s really happening. That’s like demon slayer if it didn’t have the breathings effects, it is what is really happening but isn’t as easy to comprehend)

The anime would make sense because it puts Sukuna in a reasonable time limit. He started off overwhelming Mahoraga and after a few spins, Sukuna realises that he's basically getting stronger every time the wheel spins. So he uses shrine+fuga to finish him off before he adapts to all of his attacks.
The actual reason why he was punching the air was because he couldn’t see the slashes, he had just adapted to deflect the slashes whenever sukuna was in his slashing pose. It took another spin of the wheel for Mahoraga to adapt to Sukuna throwing feints
So uh what about when sukuna yells "YOU CAN SEE MY TECHNIQUE MAHORAGA" and laughs

He's not confused, it was actively trying to anticipate Sukuna Throwing a Cleave at its limbs to send it flying to deal damage, when it learned sukuna was throwing fakes, it started doing so too, adapting to the situation

Sukana perfectly explained mahoragas Adaptability in the manga : Mahoraga's adaptation is essentially based on time. To Make it Simple, Let's say that Mahoraga adapts to a random cursed technique in 5 spins of its wheel. If Mahoraga experiences the attack only once, it will take 10 minutes to adapt to it, and if mahoraga gets hit with the same attack, it'll adapt faster

He was overwhelmed by the concept of Sukuna's feints, and didn't know how much of what Sukuna was doing was feints and which ones were actual attacks, the adapting he was doing was adapting to Sukuna's feinting, eventually ending in him hitting Sukuna with a feint of his own, which is the reason Sukuna had that silly ass smile because he had corrupted the Divine status of the Divine General

After that cut, he adapted to Sukuna's mind games and fighting styles (which in this case is fakes, feint, fakepumps, and feign) and he counters Sukuna by doing the same feinting technique (he faked by using his right hand to punch, then immediately changed to left hand to punch) and finally landed a hit on Sukuna, that's why we see Sukuna smiling after Mahoraga landed a hit, he smiles because he knew that he corrupted Mahoraga's DIVINE status by making him doing feints

The real reason according to the storyboard artists was that Mahoraga had been adapting to the slashes by hitting them with his limbs and making the limbs therefore fly off to hit Sukuna.
Sukuna noticed this so he started feinting attacks. Mahoraga didn’t know what this was so here he’s trying to anticipate when Sukuna’s next attack will be.

That is not exactly the reason, some animators notes reveal that mahoraga was literally predicting the cuts, so when it happens his parts where directly launched in the direction of sukuna, thats why there a part where the arm of Mahoraga was flying towards sukuna, because maho predict the cleave, and used the impact to launch the arm from far. So when Sukuna starts to fake'it, maho was still predicting.

Difference between amount of spins in fight against Gojo and in fight against Sukuna was explained by the fact that the wheel takes time to adapt, it accelerates with the absorption of such hits. Sukuna has used the cuts many times, and Gojo has used his CT's only a few times.
he didn’t nerf him. every time mahoraga adapted/spin he could see it easier and his durability against it improved. but gojos thins is just infinity, it can’t have a weaker or easier to handle effect, so it just had a bare value of 5 spins to adapt and overcome

I loved that scene tbh, having both read the manga and watched the episode. They didn’t necessarily need to extend the fight for it to be good but I’m glad they did, to fill the episode. The animator hostages went crazy.

Sukuna litreally sais „you can See it mahoraga“
A buddy told me that in the anime version, you can see that Sukuna kept cutting off Mahoraga’s hands, and the divine general’s first method of “adapting” was to punch into Sukuna’s slashes to quite literally throw his hands into Sukuna as projectiles. Once Sukuna starts feinting, Mahoraga shadowboxes because he doesn’t know when the slash he needs to use to throw his arm will come.
The reason mahoraga shadow boxes is shown in the animation shortly before it. Once the slashes output become stronger then his body he launches is body parts at sukuna. Which is the weird scene of him landing hits but losing body parts at the same time. The reason he is shadow boxing is because sukuna started fainting his attacks so mahoraga expecting slashes punched at the air so when the slash hit him the arm would fly forward and strike sukuna. But since Salina and throwing faints, no slashes occurred so no limbs went flying. The animation in the blue ray has tons of really odd and fun hint into the fight if you watch it over and over
Sukuna even says “you can see it mahoraga,you can see my cursed technique”
by the way, mahoraga in that scene was antecipating sukuna slashes, since there's no visual or sound effect of mahoraga deflecting any slash, sukuna in that moment noticed that his technique was becoming useless against him since he was adapting to it, so he feints to notuce clearly if mahoraga was adapting completely to his technique.

Short story long:
Mahoraga can not just adapt to attacks, he can adapt to fighting styles too.
If you watch the Blu-Ray you can see that after Mahoraga's death and adaptation in the minute 12:44 he starts to be much more aware whenever Sukuna rises his hand, going full defense.
After Sukuna fooled Mahoraga on air by not doing any attack while Mahoraga was trying to defend himself by shadow boxing, he readapts on air and then lands inside a metro. In here he puts in use his recopilated data and instead of doing shadow boxing again he prefers to attack and defend at same time, almost punching Sukuna in the process.
After Mahoraga failed every strategy he decides to use the environment against Sukuna by launching debris instead of doing direct attacks since that point.
