The thing that blows me away is that teenagers today who see the Breakfast Club still relate. Just to make you feel really old, Anthony Michael Hall, the youngest acter in the movie is now 10 years older than Paul Gleason was at that time. In 1985 Gleason was 46. AMH is now 56 years old. Next year this movie will be 40 years old.
I remember the ending, when Ferris goes into the kitchen the entire theater crowd all stopped in our tracks while egressing the place. When he said the end lines "...go home..." we all got embarrassed & laughed then filed out still laughing about how he got us all!!
I was born in 1967. In my humble opinion the 1980s were the best decade to be a teenager! Thanks in no small part to John Hughes and his films. I had a major crush on Mia Sara.
Growing up in the Chicagoland area at this time my friends and I would drive around Northbrook, Deerfield, Winnetka, etc. looking for sites from the movie. We found most but Ferris’ house is actually in California. Great video!!
@MrSunDevil23 The house is located in Long Beach, California, about 2 miles from where I live. I had no idea where it was until a cycling club I ride with rode past it. LOL
This movie is my absolute favorite of all time EVER! The first movie I memorized (including singing along to all the music). My sister was so annoyed because she knew that my little 9yr old self didn't really understand what was going on. As time went on to somewhere in the late 90's/early 2000's it was playing on like HBO or something. I recall my mind being completely blown. It was like the first time I'd ever seen it but still knew all the lines. P.S. I'm glad Emelio turned it down. Alan was perfect for Cameron.
I caught the end of this movie when I was a kid in the 80s.. all I could remember was them trying to run the car backwards and it crashes through those floor to ceiling windows... It bugged me and lived rent free in my head for YEARS.. not until I finally found it in the late 90s and was overjoyed when I finally watched it all again and found out it was a great movie too!
That’s me exactly, but with Slapshot. The first time I saw Slapshot was late night movie on tv around 82-83. Didn’t know what it was but remembered the Hanson Bros. Years later…
Some days at work when it's past time to go home I'll go to the stragglers still there and say "you're still here - works over - go home" bit with hand gestures.
Great trivia/commentary Loved hearing all them different Stars considered for the roles and how i don’t think this movie could have had any better combination of actors
Here is another fact that wasn't mentioned in this video.... On August 5, 1987, while driving a rented car outside Tempo, Northern Ireland, Broderick crossed into the wrong lane and collided head-on with another car. The driver, Anna Gallagher, 28, and her mother, Margaret Doherty, 63, were both killed instantly. He was vacationing with Jennifer Grey, whom he had begun dating during the filming of Ferris Bueller's Day Off. He suffered a fractured leg and ribs, a concussion, and a collapsed lung. Grey's injuries included severe whiplash, which later required surgery to avoid paralysis. Broderick told police he had no recollection of the crash and did not know why he had been in the wrong lane: "What I first remember is waking up in the hospital, with a very strange feeling going on in my leg." He was charged with causing death by dangerous driving and faced up to five years in prison, but was convicted of the lesser charge of careless driving and fined £100 (US$175). The victims' family called the verdict "a travesty of justice". The victims' brother/son, Martin Doherty, later forgave Broderick amid plans to meet him in 2003. In February 2012, when Broderick was featured in a multi-million-dollar Honda commercial that aired during the Super Bowl, Doherty said the meeting had still not taken place and that Broderick "wasn't the greatest choice of drivers, knowing his past"
Another thing nobody ever comments on... At UT Knoxville There is a Ferris Hall and a Bueller Hall across the street from each other in the engineering campus. Weird, eh? When I went there in 80's it was Bueller, but some rich guy donated money and now it's Dabney-Bueller Hall. Ferris is where I spent my time, for the EE students.
You don't mention that in the photo of Jennifer Grey you show of her dressed up for the Twist & Shout street scene, you also see Richard Edson, original Sonic Youth drummer and actor who plays one of the parking attendants who steals and joyrides Cameron's fathers car. Just saying.
Ruck and Broderick were noticed at the same time. They were doing the Broadway run of Biloxi Blues together in '85. I think they even mention it on the DVD commentary and in one of the 'Behind the scenes' videos made during the shoot.
My wife went to Glenbrook North HS while this movie was being filmed. She and her classmates were able to watch the scene when Broderick picks Sloan up in the Ferrari. FBDO will always have a place in her heart. She got such a kick out of you mentioning GNHS. Thanks!
How could you leave out the awesome fact that one of the parking attendants was played by Richard Edson, drummer for one the coolest bands ever, Sonic Youth!
I was surprised they used a Red Wings Gordie Howe jersey, being that the movie takes place in and around the Chicago area. Back then, with both the Red Wings and Blackhawks in the same division, they hated each other,so it would have made sense for Cameron to be a Blackhawks fan,and wear Bobby Hull's jersey instead
Matthew Broderick and Jennifer Grey were involved in a fatal car wreck in Ireland just after filming Ferris Bueller's Day Off. Broderick hit a car head-on, killing a mother and daughter. Broderick suffered several broken bones, a concussion, and a collapsed lung, while Grey had to have surgery to avoid paralysis. Broderick faced 5 years in prison but ended up with a small fine instead.
I worked in a movie theater at the time and was lucky that our theater had "Ferris Bueller's Day off". I must had seen the ending of the film at least 50 times if not more. I still watch it on a DVD that I still have of the movie.
Mandela Effect: I saw the movie in Santa Rosa California (Sonoma County) in 1986. I remember buying the Ferris Bueller soundtrack at Tower Records on cassette. The soundtrack featured Big Audio Dynamite, which I had never hear of them, John Williams Star Wars main theme for the Ferrari going airborne scene with the garage workers, and Twist and Shout by the Beatles. Is it any wonder they claim the soundtrack was never released? The memory if not true is absolutely powerful Madela Effect. As far as the movie, I recognized it's light genius back then. Not many people realized it was a classic at the time. Unlike say Back to the Future.
This was one of my top 5 favourite films of all time. I don't know if it would have been as good with Michael J Fox, but it would have been interesting to find out.
Noted from your snap when mentioning Jenifer Grey dropping in on the dance action (twist and shout on the float scene) also featured character actor Richard Edson - he played one of the garage attendants that ‘took care’ of the Ferrari in the movie 😊
I went to Glenbrook North also, class of 81, and the town of Northbrook did paint their water tower with save Faris that was used in the movie, it was maybe a 1/2 mile away from the high school
Although you mentioned Ferris Bueller and The Breakfast Club being filmed at the same high school, you didn't happen to mention that the the two shoots overlapped, so there were times when both movies were being filmed on opposite ends of the school.
While based in Chicago, Ferris Bueller's house was actually located in Long Beach, California. So in the scene where he's running "home" to beat his parents, he's actually going from Chicago, IL, to Long Beach, CA. That's a long run!
Twist And Shout By The Beatles wasn't included on the 2016 release of The Ferris Buellers Day Off Soundtack CD from La La Land Records due to licensing LOL!🤗💽🕺🙋
@0:14 - I learned 25 things actually. Before you even get to your list, I realize that they used Carver audio equipment here (save for the equalizer) and at that time, my young self thought Carver was the best.
Grew up with this movie, but watching it as an adult, Ferris is a fully developed sociopath. Despite how the movie resolves, he is a terrible friend and sets the worst examples for how to treat people.
@MicrophonicFool Same here. I guess the events in the story could not transpire unless Ferris was the way he was, and when I first saw this movie I didn't think about it, but decades later, indeed I see it differently too. The only problem is when life imitates art, or maybe in real life too many people like sociopaths.
But that's what made this whole set of events happen. We grew up with people like ferris, pretending to be friends, but really out for a good time for themselves. We were left alone at young ages, and a lot of us got bored. Some got jobs, and others got to cruise around. We networked, tried to find friends with cooler toys than what we had. That's all, nothing more. If that makes ferris a sociopath, then most of gen x is also that way. John Hughes tapped into the mindset of gen x to create movies for gen x.
Nice video, but it's "Gordy Howe" -- with a hard G. Jordy Howe? Yikes. Fun Fact 25. Come to Chicago and visit the Art Institute to see much of the art from the movie. It, alone, is worth the trip.
The sound track was released eventually. I got it a couple of years ago. Twist and shout it on there, but ONLY the brass are playing, they didn't get permission to play the combined track.
It was George Harrison who didn't like the brass on "Twist and Shout," not McCartney. John Hughes tells the story on the directors' comments track on one of the DVD releases.
Im sorry if someone already mentioned this but Twist and Shout was not on The Beatles White Album. Also, it was not a Beatles song. It was recorded by Top Notes.
The 80’s wouldn’t be the same without John Hughs. His movies were exactly the sentiment of what growing up in the 80’s was like. We miss him.

Still can't believe he died of a heart attack at age 59 while walking by himself in midtown Manhattan a couple of blocks from the Chrysler Building. 😖

Such a classic film !

I rock that shirt a lot and always get compliments!
Great review! One correction though, the hocky player is _Gordie_ Howe, not Geordi.
I get "Inspector Gadget" vibes when I see Ferris dress up in the Trench coat and hat!😎😆👍🏼
