The first ever piece of debussy that i listened to was prelude to the afternoon of a faun and I immediately imagined that faun running with full enthousiasm through the beautiful forest scenery, enjoying every second of its life. Ever since that moment, every piece of debussy reminds me of some sort of fairy tale.
Debussy 'speaks' to me. Something about this orchestara - the players, the clarity of sound and vision, the filming focusing on the different players. And it's free! Thank you.
Thank goodness Beethoven never withdrew his first two piano concertos, or Schoenberg Verklarte Nacht, or so many other pieces because the composers felt they had “outgrown “ them. This is a marvelous work that Gieseking, among others, always loved to play. Thanks for this lovely performance.
Notice the female musicians smiling and clapping enthusiastically at the end. I just love this. I love when the orchestra visibly loves and enjoys the wonderful music they play as well.
Bravissimo. How beautiful to see this. I adore the Debussy Fantaisie and have performed it myself. Wish more concert pianists played it .. I love Debussy' sensual musical color palate and a refreshing change from always hearing Prokofiev or Rachmaninoff for 20th piano and orchestra works
I only discovered it a couple of years ago and I’ve been playing for 30 years. It’s our own fault though. I knew of it but just never bothered to listen. Strange enough this is the second live performance the past couple of months to come up in my feed. Another unjustly neglected piece is the Fantaisie by Fauré.
I learned this piece when I was 17 years old, 90 years after it was written. It's a pleasure to play. Debussy had withdrawn it, not wanting it to be performed. I understand why. It's a lovely piece, but there are structural elements that went against what Debussy was aiming for and exploring at the time. He felt it was still too steeped in the Romantic genre.
Quite refreshing - this had a youthful exuberance, but quiet moments like the opening of the second movement were beguilingly dreamy. This music lover in Washington DC USA is really falling in love this orchestra and its irresistible videos!
While I've long loved Debussy, I was not familiar with this until I heard it played last night in Cleveland, with Leif Ove Andsnes, soloist, and Michael Tilson Thomas, conductor. Left me wondering why it isn't played and recorded more. People smarter than I (a large group) may have some good answers. Maybe there are no good answers, and it's just been neglected, as happens with so much other good music.
I appreciated this performance more than I did the work; I never seemed to warm to this "Fantasie", but I always enjoy hearing - and seeing - this great orchestra. I'll look forward to hearing pianist Aimard in some more interesting music.
Spellbinding. Few other composers are as ephemeral and chimeric yet wonderfully idiosyncratic as Debussy. I also feel that, despite its deviation from traditional concerto form, this functions as Debussy's Piano Concerto in G Major.
The only fault I can find with this performance is that the final movement was a bit too slow and stodgy-- Martinon's recording from the seventies is far better at catching the contrasts in the mood, to the point of sailing over the handlebars. . .

I love Debussy's music so much. 7:20 is so beautiful
'god i love Debussy, i wish he had composed a piano concerto.'
'He composed a fantasy for piano and orchestra :)'
Despite the title, the work can very well be considered a piano concerto. Marvelous!
Wonderful. Composed in 1889 at. 27 years old.

Tokyo
Never heard of this beautiful work before. Maybe because only a few pianists have this on their repertoire?
How come no one plays this? I've been playing 50 years and never heard of it.

I'm a Debussy fanatic and I've never heard of it either....

I Heard It in 1970, Decca record. They never play It cause Classic music Is in the hands of chat class

Vraiment magnifique ! Merci.

Jeu tellement riche en impressions !
Thank you. Such a delightful concert. Missed it when it was streaming but catching up now.
Merci, merveilleux clip !!
Thanks so much for upload this great work which I didn’t know in spite of being a huge fan of Debussy
Bravoooooo

I see. So, Debussy invented The Freak. And Joplin invented--The Tweak.
Better than Ravel.
Why is the audience so empty?? Are there covid issues over there at the moment?
Perhaps people get intimidated about attending events where they get dirty looks for clapping at the wrong time?
@@kereyquaid2140 Yeah, that was an embarrassing moment for you, wasn't it.
Good performance of a boring piece by Debussy. French music is a lot of fluff compared to German.
"German", "french", ... Who cares ? Well, I don't !
Boring??? Not one bit
I am German and love Debussy, while i have to say that nationality is not what i appreciate a musician for. I appreciate them for their works :)
low iq moment
