Sadly, Bernard Haitink passed away at age 92 in 2021, which means he directed this piece and others in 2009 at age 80!! He last directed a concert in September 2019, which means he was 89!!! Amazing and his directing was too!!
I was there, in Concertgebouw. I actually listened to this performance in Mar 2009. The program consisted of Mozart's 35th, Debussiy's La Mer, and Beethoven's 7th, all of which were so excellent and so touching that I can remember them as if I were listening in now. Although the maestro was suffering from a back pain at that time, we never realised such a disadvantage of his, due to the great rendition. Thank you very much, Maestro Haitink, and Concertgebouw Orchestra led by Mr. Eshkenazy.
I saw him conduct the Chicago Symphony Orchestra in 2007. Mahler's 2nd Symphony, got a second-row seat. Truly amazing performance. When I reach his age, I'd like to just be able to stand up for that long, much less wave my arms around the whole time. Considering he started conducting the year my father was born.
This is my favorite Work of Music of all time! Debussy so, miraculously, has recreated the "Experience of the Sea"----he, feels the sea, he lives it!!!! Maestro Bernard Haitink, ALSO, saw something else, which other Conductors just fail to see, and, FEEL before them: The BEAUTY OF THE SEA!!!! He has so much command of the Orchestra, that he brings out the BEAUTY in each Instrument with such care and TASTE!!!! All the sections of the Orchestra sounded so beautifully, with the, exact Poetry of each phrase!!!! This is, indeed, quite a "Master's FEAT!!!! I can't ever forget the truly beautiful "Line & Color" that he culled from each and every one of the Instruments!!!! We, most certainly, need him, today, and in the Future, to make GOOD TASTE and Deep Insight---- Happ
