No, Tom Baker and Lalla Ward were not both divorced when this scene was filmed. In fact, they hadn't even gotten married yet when this episode was filmed. They were married a short time after Tom had finished his final episode of Doctor Who and then divorced a year later. Peter Davison was already into his second season on Doctor Who by then.

It's a shame that JN-T thought that Romana and K9 were too smart, they should have been the companions in Logopolis and accompanied the Peter Davison Doctor for a little while.

Damn I hope Romana returns one day, I want her travelling with a future Doctor so badly. Thanks to regeneration the writers can do whatever they want with her, so much untapped potential for the modern series. Well, hopefully he'll run into her somewhere or maybe on Gallifrey.

"you were the noblest Romana of them all!"
why do i find this line so sad?

The Fourth Doctor's final word on Romana reminds me of the Eleventh Doctor's remark on River: "No, she won't [be absolutely fine]. She'll be amazing."

As rushed as Romana's goodbye seems, it fits with time quickly running out before the back blast destroyed the Gateway. Plus the Doctor hates goodbyes, and after Sarah Jane's superb (and thankfully not truly final) farewell in Hand of Fear,I think the Doctor was realizing how lonely life was going to be and each goodbye to the people he grew fond of was just painful but repetitive. The more he felt toward a companion, the more he tried to control the feeling of loss when they'd leave I think, thus Romana leaving seems to be almost awkward in its keeping it professional, tho I believe the Doctor had very strong feelings, being that Romana was his own species, had grown into a heroine fighting the good fight after a somewhat haughty intro, which only validated The Doctor's own lifestyle choices. In short, Romana's growth into the Time Lady heroine showed the Doctor he was doing the right thing in battling injustice and evil everywhere instead of sitting back and watching like the other Time Lords. So his sense of admiration, affection, and most of all, a true deep friendship with someone from his own world was tempered by the knowledge of the loneliness and loss sure to follow. Very very sad, but of course the Doctor wouldn't let that show.

But Dr number four actually said "I will miss you" to Romana; he didn't say the same to Sarah or Leela.

There's been some speculation that Romana eventually returned from E-Space only to be killed on Gallifrey during the Time War, but that's just speculation. No one really knows what became of her but as far as I'm concerned there's still one more Time Lord/Lady out there.

I'd have liked for this scene to be a bit longer and more emotional.

I adored Lalla as Romana. But it would be most interesting to see who could play a regenerated Romana at some point (and hopefully soon) in the current series.

Wanted to add that given K9 would be functional behind the mirrors, I think more than anything it was the Doctor's way of leaving Romana with as much help and protection that the Doc could muster in such a harrowing countdown to destruction. Plus I think he knew Romana could no more return to Gallifrey than he himself could. And undoubtedly he built K9 MK III just as he gad built MK II when the original stayed with Leela, but it only served to remind him of Romana being gone and that friends can never be replaced, and making him think of Sarah Jane and all his friends long since gone. So K9 MK III went to Sarah Jane, the Doctor's gift of protection extended to all three of the companions, friends and emotional insurance against loneliness during his 4th incarnation. And with that knowledge that his 3 closest friends were safe and protected as well as could be by the K9s, the deeply depressed and lonely 4th Doctor gave in to the future quickly catching up to him- his own farewell to his 4th incarnation.

I think Romana really left because she couldn't stand Adric! Kind of unfair though. She gets the genius robot dog and he gets custody of the bratty kid.

Romana became Lady President of the Time Lords during the early years of the Time War, and had initially tried to stave off the war's outbreak. Unfortunately being the leader of the Time Lords (and therefore a high priority target for the Daleks), and having been replaced by the revived Rassilon by the war's end, I think it's pretty clear that Romana was killed during the war.

I'm a big fan of Romana (Doctor/Romana shipper here) but the Doctor's goodbye seemed kind of...emotionless. It's like he was just dropping her off for the weekend, not forever.
P.S. I'm one of those people who think Clara is Romana.

@codyw1 No, I get that. But I think she could have stayed if she really wanted. I mean, the Master and the Rani have been uncatchsble for centuries. If she really wanted to stay and the Doctor really wanted her to, I think they could have managed it. The Time Lords don't seem to be very good at catching Rogues.

Would Romana dare fight the Time Lords if they had decided to take her back to Gallifrey and have her punished for refusing to return? The Doctor fought them once during the War Games after he called them to ask for their help to return the soldiers from different wars in Earth's history who were kidnapped by the War Chief and they brought him home after his request was granted.
