Sir tamil and malayalam are not that closely similar because malayalam has sanskritised words. He learnt malayalam from his wife and he acted in many malayalam movies. And kamal sir also speak malayalam like vikram sir because kamal hassan sir acted in 50 malayalam movies he had spended his childhood in kerala. Except this 2 actors know other tamil actors don't know malayalam. Malayalam is close to old tamil than modern tamil. And vikrams wife is from kannur kerala and he has malayalam speaking relatives.vikrams malayalam sounds like palkaad malayalam. I think he byhearted palkaad malayalam slang. So tamilan that easily he will not speak malayalam he needs some hard work to learn. Many malayalees will understand some basic vocabulary of modern tamil but they don't understand deeply. Malayalam is not an easiest language to learn and speak. It is more than 70% sanskritsed and it contains words from some words from todays tamil, many words from sangatamizh(ancient Tamil),arabic, portugal. So arabic words, sanskrit words, portugal, old tamil words restricts the native tamilan to understand malayalam. Even tamilan good at formal tamil also find some extent difficulty in understanding malayalam he will understand malayalam in limited extent. A tamilan who is very good at ancient tamil literature will understand malayalam well. If tamilan knows tamil literaturey(tholpakkaiyam) and sanskrit he will learn malayalam too easily.
