What a wonderful old film with a good life lesson that remains true through the ages. I was born in 1952. it amazes me to realize how much things have changed since birth. I can remember some of it. And the old folks were wonderful. I used to sing in the church choir. A few times we went to old folks' homes. I can still remember their sweet smiles. Now that I'm old, I understand. I love seeing young children. But now, it's almost a crime to look at them.
I am as old as You,same observation ,one thing different I was growing in Poland under "communism" but most of people were nice ,and the churches were filled to the brim with elegantly though modestly dressed people.
I showed this film to my mother; (as with Beverly Michaels) also born in 1928. My mom is 96 and said that she felt she was back in 1951 while watching the movie. It is funny to me.... when I watch b/w movies, the "bad girls" (even gang members) are wearing pearls and look like they just came from the hair salon! Betty and Irma certainly looked upscale and refined to me.
One of my favorite Railroad Film Noir movies. Simply fantastic! I saw it a few years ago and I've been looking for it for a while. Sobbering life lessons. Thank you! 👏
Right. Hugo has did it all! In my opinion, he was underrated. I always thought he was authentic and gave such integrity to the roles he played. He helped Cleo Moore quite a bit in her career is what I've read. Seemed like a very nice human being.
Hugo Haas was brilliant….his charm is addictive…I suggest you watch all his films, most are here on UA-cam. Most of his films show him as a lonely middle-aged man who falls for a femme fatale, but still interesting stories..
I'm blown away by all the talent in Haas's films. He's wonderful as actor, writer, producer, etc, and I love the two leading ladies that grace his films - Beverly Michaels and Cleo Moore.
This is a great movie. I watched a lot of these old flicks and most of them are pretty good, but this one is exceptional. Definitely did not see “it” coming. Great ending!
I love the way Beverly Michaels portrays the heartless, vulgar, selfish, stupid gold digger, which she does in a number of films. I think she does it better than any of the big name actresses. Shelley Winters would often portray similar characters, but she would always soften them up somewhat, which might be believable but it takes off the edge. I also haven't seen any other bigger actresses do a great portrayal of that type of character.
Yes, just watched this amazing film. Beverly Michaels..... Wow!! What a fantastic actor. Her naturalness is just mesmerizing! She was born the same year as my mother and my mother is celebrating her 96th birthday tomorrow. Lovely Beverly died a bit young. I now, want to see all of her movies!

Always like anything Hugo Haas starred in or produced. Would have liked the ending of this picture better if Beverly Michaels had ended up with her head on the railroad tracks.
LOL and she would still have that beautiful scowl on her pretty face! I think that would have been a little too "Hitchcock" for this beautiful film though. We would also have missed her "girlish" sticking out her tongue along the tracks at the end. So, I can't agree with you.

I recently viewed an episode of "Cheyenne" with Beverly Michaels. She was over the top creepy. It was a disturbing performance that was allowed to continue unchecked by director Richard Bare. She went into a vacant frenzy that was close to comedic. If you have a chance to see it...
You describe her performance as, "Over the top creepy. It was a disturbing performance that was allowed to continue unchecked by director Richard Bare." ?? Unchecked by the director?? What does that mean?
There is no accounting for taste. If yours is the only negative comment among hundreds, you might consider the fact that you might be lacking in that department."
The only person who could act was Hugo! I take that back, she's good, I dislike her intensely. I have a feeling she was like that in real life, she married a 50 year old man when he was 20 in her real life.
Michaels is one best and most underrated Femme Fatales of Film Noir. Though her films were low budget affairs---the stories hackneyed riff-offs of Scarlet Street (45) and The Postman Always Rings Twice(46), yet she gave everything to her roles in other films like Wicked Woman (53) and Betrayed Woman (54). She deserves to be better-remembered.

I second your very legitimate POV, though the name of the poster suggests that they may not be a native English speaker and may have a different perspective as a result. At least it’s “in English” and not simply “English,” which always leaves me wondering whether the film is actually British (until I watch it) :) What’s annoying to me, BTW, are posters who suggest that anyone who says anything even remotely critical or even mildly instructive is “entitled.” That’s truly irritating and AH-ish!

That's because for 60 years, America has lived under the iron fist of The Great Society, thanks to comrade Lyndon Johnson.
I was born in 1952 also. Our farm was bordered by a railroad, just like this movie. It was a wonderful era to grow up in! 🎉

Closest to wonderful 40s and 50s Italian Cinema by an American movie at the time. ... Wonderful drama and acting - thanks for uploading!
The lead actor deserved an Academy
Award for his performance in this movie.
Yes! He’s wonderful…he escaped the NATZIS came to America and was successful as a filmmaker and actor!
Excellent from start to finish!

I wonder if that reflects a fear he had . . . or a fantasy/fetish.
Big thanks for this, I enjoyed it immensely...Beverly Michaels does evil women so well...
She's good in wicked woman
The BEST~ I'd let her "walk all over me" any day! 🤣😉

Such a nice movie with fantastic acting

Talk about femme fatale...very interesting tale.

I liked her in East Side West Side... beautiful and hard as 💅... she looked great in the mink stole. She had the full lower lip pout...
Liked her in the film, too. Can't find that on UA-cam. But Ava stole the movie.
great looking girl great actress ...horrible depressing story line
I see this movie more as a comedy (clever lines) with the whimsical music throughout. But everyone sees things differently.
She was an absolutely awful woman. So evil 😠
She had the talent to make evil... so attractive! The perfect "femme fatale."
