I work in a bakery and we have a man with autism who works with us! He packages product, puts together boxes, washes dishes and helps decorate cookies from time to time. Our bakery would truly struggle without him there!

I would like to add some information for the ridiculous and disappointing amount of negative people on here who claim this young man is not being treated fairly and only getting $2 per hour. I work for Community Vocational Services and had a hand in securing Nick's employment success and I also wrote the article that lead to this feature as I do this routinely for our successful clientele in our community businesses to highlight the success stories of all involved and in the hope it leads to the interest of others to get involved. Rest assured to all of you...he is NOT being exploited. He is NOT making subminimum wage. Woodloch legally cannot even do that. He is making a fair wage that any other worker in his position would make. He is treated with respect, kindness, and fairness. What most of you are speaking about in regards to subminimum wage is in regards to workshops. Which I cannot speak to because our agency does not do that so I suggest you do some educated research on that for yourselves. But what I can attest to is that many people in those type of programs start out there and work their way up to competitive employment. Some are ready for it right out of the gate of high school and others are not. Also people with disabilities who work also receive benefits such as SSI and SSDI and NO this is NOT ripping off the system. This is supplemental income so they actually can have some decent income while still be able to work part time hours. Yes part time. That does not mean they're exploited. That means that is the reality. Many people cannot hold full time jobs for many reasons...not enough endurance, etc. There are many different reasons and it is based on their disability. It is NOT because someone is looking to exploit someone for working just a few hours and pay them crap. Also there are waivers through counties (and I suggest if you're going to have an opinion to do some research on this) that allow individuals with disabilities to obtain supported employment, coaching in life skills, respite, among many other services. The Office of Vocational Rehabilitation offers short term services for employment and if the individual qualifies for waiver services through their county, they can have ongoing supported employment throughout their lives...such as what you see here as an example. This young man has taken part in many, many programs to get him to where he is. This was not just some charity case. This was a lot of training through school, job shadowing, and a wide variety of vocational training through many different programs. His parents are advocates and that is what you have to be. You have to fight for your child. Not everything is the hearsay and rumors. I hope this has cleared up the many negative misunderstandings and going forward please do not judge someone's situation until you truly know the facts and possibly even that particular individual's situation. I guarantee you everyone has a different story to tell. Please enjoy this story for what it was meant for...and without judgment.

Why should special needs feel limited in what they can do for jobs? Mostly we are only exposed to job seeking for banker, teacher, restaurant dishwasher/busser, custodian, and store greeter, bakery delivery or something else in a similar category. We should be able to make a living wage doing higher paid jobs like working as a certified nurses assistant (technical college offers an associate's degree for it) or professional hip hop, jazz, ballet, acro, arial and/or tap dancer, singer/songwriter, professional instrumentalist, commercial/tv/movie actress, reality show actress, fashion modeling, etc. For people who have gone above normal middle class jobs. I'm just trying to open some new doors for new opportunities in this generation of younger adults and for generations of younger adults to come! 👍

In other developed countries it is not a big deal for special needs to get employed because companies who hire special needs get incentives from the government. U.S. is really not an ideal place for such unique people.

I hope he's not being paid below minimum wages. Many employers take advantage of special needs adults. Those employers need to be boycotted until they give equal pay. Here's a video of a woman with downs syndrome who is advocating for people with special needs. She talks about the wages too. ua-cam.com/video/mmtnAVr_NY0/v-deo.html
