To make the smoke look more crisp and thicker, I would recommend setting a Float node under the scatter, and set it to a level of 2 :). Then you can adjust you density to get it thicker or less thick, in combination with the Absorption :). Hope this helps, and awesome tutorial by the way :D!
Sorry for the confustion all, what I meant by float node under the "state" was to put a float node under the "scatter" section, then once your float under scatter is set to a value of 2, you can then adjust your density to get a thicker or less thick smoke look. As for making sure your smoke is not looking pixilated, you want to make sure under the octane object tag on your smoke, that you set it to a lower voxel count. Note, you can only adjust the voxel count on Turbulance FD simulations, where as VDB's that have been loaded in like in Travis's video, you can not adjust he voxel size, its pre ditermand by hundini when you sim it and export it. Hope this helps :).
Really great stuff man! Thanks for sharing. If you're wanting a sequence in the VDB object in octane, you can select the first frame, load it in and then in the "from" and "to" boxes you can adjust the frame range. You may need the "$F" expression instead of the "$F3" I'm not positive of that one. Also, Houdini needs to have the same frame rate as C4d or you'll get some weird gaps in playback. Cheers!
Love how you dive right into things and give it a good go! If you want to increase the density of the smoke particles I recommend krakatoa. It can be used with 3dsmax and c4d, it will use the particles from houdini and multiply them by millions, very fast as well.
You probably all figured out how to get the VDB to be less pixelated, but just in case, I believe it's within the medium tab, change the density of the volume medium to something below 1. and the volume step length to something below 1. That should make it very dense and smooth, at which point you can go into the Scattering part within the Medium tab and turn the scattering phase way down to allow for more transparency. I used this on a cloud I made in Houdini and it seemed to help out pretty well.
It would be cool to create an asset from Houdini with which we can control the smoke simulation in C4D with some extra options, like adding collision objects...
Have you tried rendering at 60 FPS or higher in order to remove blurriness? Also, the rendered sequence may be sharpened in Photoshop or After Effects. It's just an idea, never tried it but I will give it a shot myself. Thanks for the tutorial, great value in there! :)
This is a good tutorial... However, what I'm trying to achieve is to create a smoke simulation for a moving object... I created the animation of my object in Maya, and cached it to alembic... Then I imported into houdini to create my smoke effect on the moving object, but after selecting the object and clicking on the pyro smoke sim like you did in this video, I did not see any smoke and also my object disappeared... Please someone should help me out here, I'm actually getting frustrated
Hello. I want to export a fire animation to Houdini den blender. However when I come to the volume-import button in the blender and call the vdb files I created, it gives the following error, I write the exact text: (volume ^^firesı m _0001^^failed to load i lo error: could not get size of file C:\users\msi\videos\VDB sequece \firem_0001.VDB.) this is the error. What should I do about it? It gives this error when exporting from houdını to blender .Have a nice day
Thanks Travis, do you know how to make the same process but using trails? Because when you create trails the pyro solver creates a lot of containers and in this method cinema 4d recognize only the firts container...
vdb is baked simulation - doing another sim on top would look weird - and is kinda silly

Hello Travis, great tut. I've a question, when I export the simulation Houdini is making just one file instead of a sequence,, any clue? Thanks for reopening your channel :) ! Best
Sorry for only seeing the message now, glad you figured it out i was going to mention exactly that :) Oh, and i had to start from scratch again with this channel because youtube deleted my main one without any proper reason or closure but i'll still upload on here.
hey Travis any idea why when i go to export my vdb files it only exports one file? also when i select the files destination in houdini some of the words turn red?

Hey bud, can you explain what you mean setting a Float node under the state? In Houdini? In Cinema? Thanks man!
@@jebhardwick Octane, most likely.
please elaborate

Awesome! Thank you for the informative feedback, i'll keep this in mind.
Yep! totally works. Thank you!
Thanks a lot!
damn it the more i see of houdini the more i realize i'm doing myself a disservice by not learning it right now
Its incredibly powerful software, i still need to dig deeper into learning a lot more about the program.
Thanks !!!

Lovely friendly intro to these topics bro, thank you!
Great tutorial, thanks! How do I export the fire without the smoke or possibly together?
that was very informative for a guy who just started with houdini. ty a lot :)
Thank you!
Thanks very much!
Thank you very much.
It turned out to export the sequence of clouds in 3ds max
$ F3
Saved my day.
please how to export water&foam and whitewater from houdini to cinema 4d ... can you created video tutorial .... please sir
and partical pls :)
does albemic work? ive only done it for just an ocean not sure if it also brings the foam out

Nice demo thanks Travis!
That-s a great tutorial dude~ thanks alot! does anyone know how to STOP the sphere from emitting smoke ?
In the pyro node, select the container object - animate the ACTIVATION option from 1 to 0.
Hi great tut! Do you know how to export a vdb (Fire/flame/smoke ,etc) WITHOUT the sphere geometry? Can you create smoke with an object ? Thanks
Great tut!

How would I import it entire VFB animation seequence?
you just saved me on a job today im gonna buy your assets as a thank you :)
really cool, thanks for sharing this tutorial!

Thanks so much for that tut. Helps a lot.
No problem ;)
where can i buy that plugin?
Hey, any tips on how to animate that smoke or cloud in c4d + octane?

Solved it was de _$F3 lol :(, thanks anyway !
Sorry for only seeing the message now, glad you figured it out i was going to mention exactly that :) Oh, and i had to start from scratch again with this channel because youtube deleted my main one without any proper reason or closure but i'll still upload on here.
smoke is blurry probably coz the version of Houdini you are using is apprentice which'll export and render stuff in low quality.
How to fix the blurriness? I searched on Google and couldn't find the answer.
thank you for this amazing tutorial! you saved my life ;-))))
It's only my pleasure, glad i could help :)
its just renders one frame. what am i missing ?
Any idea why my vdb sequence is not exporting any of the channels (density, temp, etc) ? :(
ever fix this?
try make folder on desktop and export VDB in that folder, then try import to your software..
Hi can i ask you where can i find VDB for houdini and how to install ?
Hey man! Awesome tut! How would you do the same with the Sky Rig? Thanks :)
Nevermind! Figured it out :)
I have never tried the sky rigs unfortunately, I've only experimented with the bare minimums in houdini.
It's cool! It was pretty much the same thing but I just manually hooked up the convert to VDB and file nodes :) Simples! :)
can we scale the smoke in cinema 4d?
Is there really no way to bring in the whole animation sequence into C4D? I feel like there definitely is a way to do that.
I've got a video for rendering the whole sequence > ua-cam.com/video/eDXc9fL92-I/v-deo.html
hey Travis any idea why when i go to export my vdb files it only exports one file? also when i select the files destination in houdini some of the words turn red?
I have the same problem. Houdini is exporting only one file instead of a sequence of vdb files. Can't figure why. Anyone?
I'm sure you've fixed this but for anyone else wondering it was because I used a lowercase f rather than an upper case one
@@lucyknowles1205 this helped!!!
@@michaelyu8459 yay!
Will this work with Arnold render?
As long as you know how to import VDB it will
Can I save it as fbx file?
Anyone nows why it says 0 grids loaded and nothing happens when I import the vdb file??
nice tutorial!
how to export the whole video?
In the octane vdb tab there is a start and end field. Just input the frames you want there.
Question, when I import the VDB into C4D, the VDB's looks pixelated? Is there a fix for this?
try pathtracing
what gpu are you using?
GTX 970, i need to upgrade.
Hello, I don't have Octane. Is there another renderer I can use to simulate this?
Any render engine that supports VDB can do this :) Arnold etc
Travis Davids great thank you!
Did you figure out why the smoke looks blurry?
The smoke is weirdly pixelated
vdb not found erro, what is this?
what if it were particles
can't export pliss help me
I don't have a pyro import section. Only my Geometry, and pyro_sim.
EDIT: I'm an idiot; I had to zoom out to see it lmao.
lool
Render it with Arnold 5 for Cinema 4D :3
arnold is too expensive i guess..
cool 666
Thank you
you said f3.......PLEASE MAKE IT CLEAR THAT THE "F3" HAS TO BE CAPITAL "F" ;)
