04dram04 - I bought a Cayman S 4 years ago. It's excellent. Did the computer ECU deal, Borla exhaust and an IPD plenum. It's possibly running 325hp but I don't know for sure. It's plenty fast and sounds great. If you get one, at least do the Borla exhaust. They sound kind of weak without it to be honest.
This is for sure the most underrated auto review channel on UA-cam. The production value is on par with some of the top dogs of the industry and the content is great. I like that you don't forget what got you this far (tuners) but are also able to give muscle car fans some great material. Keep it up!!
It is so funny that everyone is talking about the IMS but not the fact that only small amount of Porsche have that problem. I bet they don't even own one. I drove my 2006 987 boxster for 5 years with 113k in it. Still running like a champ lol
Wing Hang Shih, I wouldn’t go skydiving if a “small amount” of parachutes didn’t open. Believe me, you’ll want to jump out of a plane without a parachute if the IMS bearing grenades your motor. IMHO, IMS upgrade is worth it for peace of mind....if driving a manual, just do it when replacing the clutch.
Wing Hang Shih, 05 987 BS here with 144,000 miles driven. My IMS can only be replaced by either pulling the motor or milling out the crank case and pulling out the bearing. Fortunately my single row bearing is much more robust than the previous single row but the earlier double row suffered almost no failures. The first single row bearing is where most failures occurred about 8%.
149k on my 06 CS. Hands down best car I have ever owned. Almost nothing has been problematic, and compared to the Corvette, BMW M cars, S2000 and AMG I owned prior to this (they were all great cars), this is THE CAR. I am always thrilled at any excuse to drive it.
Five years after your video the old man with the figure stands up to time. Jealousy will get you no where! I've been blessed to find Porsche, the greatest sports car company or all time, and the Cayman rivals the 911's I've owned, though they are different beasts with there own nuances and pleasures. Cheers.
Great review, i never get bored of driving my old 2007 manual cayman, has'nt had a single thing go wrong in 6yrs, just wear and tear stuff. brilliant car.
Literally just finished watching the mk3 2jz swap and this gets posted hahah. Awesome, and you guys are one of the most underrated car channels on youtube. Keep up the great work!
Correct. Also the stock engine is boring dull black. So you have 3 jobs to do. 1) Engine bay detail 2) Painting of top engine IPD plenum parts with heat resistant paint, accenting the PORSCHE lettering carefully in a contrasting colour. 3) Installation of after market clear engine cover. Will I be doing all of the above to my Cayman S? HECK YES!
Well the Supra video was supposed to be up on Tuesday, so here's another video for today lol. Enjoy! :D Like us on Facebook and Instagram! Listen to the Roads Untraveled podcast!
Hey I know you guys like older tuned cars. However I have a 2016 /M235i you guys should review. They call it the new E46 ///M3. Its a BRILLIANT little car. Let me know.
Manual Gen 2 Cayman 2.9 here.. Love the car to bits. My first job was at Toyota in the very early nineties I drove almost new mk1 and brand new mk2 Mr2's in the Uk. I owned an imported GTS 2.0 Turbo in 2011 .. And as great as they are they will never be on the same level as a Porsche Cayman, although just as quick to 60
Nice. I ended up getting the 987 purely b/c finding a 911 targa 996 in the black/tan interior was impossible... but man in love w/ the Cayman S. I might change to a shorter shifter but aside from that, the car is literally a perfect daily driver.
Only a small percentage of 996's experienced/are destined for IMS failure. I think something like 2-3% of them. Good thing is, you can replace the IMS with a ceramic one. You can have it done for around 1 grand, it's worth the peace of mind in my opinion.
IMS .... I like to call it the Porsche boogie monster! .... please... I may have changed when I hit about 80,000 miles currently I am at 50 K... or if I have a new clutch put in.
Nicely done. Over the past few months you have continued to develop your style and "find your voice" so to speak. You're definitely on track to become one of the great mainstays.
The Cayman I reviewed had a sprint booster too, as well as the sport chrono. Let's just say I've never felt such good Throttle response in my life. Great review!
What a great video! I own an 06 Boxster S and everything you said sounds like me talking about my car to others. Until they've driven it, they just don't get it. It's not about the numbers, it's the driving experience. I can't get over how amazing that engine cover is, car looks great.
I just bought an 07 Cayman base and your video is making me super anxious to receive it! Hopefully it'll be delivered here on a few days. This one you're driving sounds beast.
can you provide any info about the sprint booster, like brand and price? I've had the 2007 base cayman, manual, for 2 years now and would like a little more power on demand. I've seen one legit chip/ecu worth 30 hp at a cost of $900 US...
I've seen a few of your vids and they're all great. I'm learning so much about my Cayman that I didn't know before. I'm a little less intimidated by the car now . . . Thanks!!!
6:30 It's funny you think and feel about a Porsche this way. Ferry Porsche son of the founder Porsche and creator of the first sportscar Porsche made, the 356 once said about what made him building cars 'Am Anfang schaute ich mich, konnte aber den Wagen, von dem ich träumte, nicht finden. Also beschloss ich, ihn mir selbst zu bauen' So basically he looked around and coudn't find the car of his dreams so he built it himself. A well engineered and efficient sports car. So you pretty much hit the essence of a Porsche!
Wife traded her perfect BRZ for a 07 Cayman 2.7. And its a fun car. Can definitely make a bad to average driver look much better. And the sound even with the factory exhaust above 3500 sounds so much better than that BRZ. A simple touch screen headunit does a lot to help with the age of the interior. It could use more power at times. But even with having a turbo mustang that cayman still makes me smile.
Went from a modified 2005 STi making 420 WHP (GT30R, built engine, full suspension, track toy, blah blah) to a 2007 Base Cayman making maybe 220 WHP. I'll never go back.
Would love for u to drive a pdk 3.4 S My 987.2 with chrin pkg flys Not high hp 315-ish pre tune but lite and a joy to drive De snorkled!! Glad u love the cars Hope to see more!!
Your Cayman looks amazing. Where did you get the front bumper? I saw NR auto has some 987 Cayman bumpers. Will really appreciate it if you can share me a link to that front bumper. Just looking sick ....
Flexing right now because I just bought a 2007 porsche Cayman from eBay for 12.5k. Picking it up Sep. 3rd. btw, what front bumper is this? i might buy that bumper with all the money i saved.
are u canadian? if so where are u from? and at now? ive bought a brand new Cayman GTS 2016 (and almost bought the downsized 2017 cayman S, great car also). Cant wait till it delivers in a week!
I'm wanting to buy either a Cayman S or a Corvette C6 Z06. I'm torn between both but I'm leaning more towards the Vette only because I heard things about the IMS bearing in the Cayman (in the 06-08 models). I heard that once it goes bad the entire engine is destroyed. Idk if that's true or not, but if it is true, that's a huge risk that idk if I'd want to take.
Nice channel, great video. Keep up good work. Myself I have porsche cayman 987 '06, love the engine cover with the blue tints, where did the owner do this?
Question, how is this a 2007 (base?)? The headlights look quite different, more like a 2009. I am getting to know a bit about Porsche Cayman--it is something I am looking forward to buy (2009 due to improvements) in a year or two.
I own a 2.7 base tiptronic Cayman and it is absolutely bulletproof. The trans is a tuned version of a ZF trans Porsche borrowed from Mercedes. I daily drive mine (110k and climbing. Service intervals are 100k for flushes versus 30k for the PDK). They were designed for the previous gen turbo cars, so can hold way more power than the Cayman can make. Most turbo owners dont start modding their trans until they hit north of 800-1000hp.
Only while driving Porsche you understand why this car cost so much.. Great review mate!
LOVE the clear engine cover.
HiroshimaSpirit they’re spendy as hell but you gotta get the HIP one (at least I did lol) can’t wait for it to show up at my door!
@@7royboy how much? And where do you buy them?
Where and how much is this engine cover?
welp, i guess im looking at cayman's on Craigslist tonight
This one is for sale.

Yeah he tried really hard. Bottom line: the 987 cayman is a masterpiece. You need the manual transmission tho.
It is so funny that everyone is talking about the IMS but not the fact that only small amount of Porsche have that problem. I bet they don't even own one. I drove my 2006 987 boxster for 5 years with 113k in it. Still running like a champ lol
Yes but you still should probably replace it as preventive maintenance because they go with no warning and its to late if it goes.

2007 2.7 987 are pretty safe as far as IMS goes. Muchless of an issue on this car.

Agree. I still remember when I turned a key first time ever, and the engine woke up. It's a unique feeling being in one of these.
Been thinking bout the plug and play controller for 987.1 boxster 🤔, good to see it actually makes a noticeable difference

The sound alone makes it worth owning. It's absolutely intoxicating.
Is the S model turbo and when did the discontinue the NA engine? Thanks!!
S model is an N/A 3.4L F6

Michael Scott, you don't have to worry so much about the IMS bearing in the 06-08 cars. It has a low failure rate (
