    As an individual who been involved personally and professionally in the highest forms of motor racing for the better part of 45 years (S.C.O.R.E., I.M.S.A., C.A.R.T., A.M.A.SX/MX, IndyCar, N.H.R.A.) and a Porsche 911 Carrera owner for nearly 30 years I can't begin to tell you how much I appreciate the quality, brevity, and lack of redundancy in this video.
    This of course means I definitely will not take the time to contrast it with many "men" masquerading as reviewers whose collective time time piloting a 350bhp+ firewagon is less than my total hours living as a seagull.
    Much less any advanced formal study in television, commercial production, script-writing, set design or film. I don't say these things to be insulting. I say these things to be very insulting.
    There is a reason we have bartenders, attorneys, lifeguards, banjo players, heart surgeons, and tire salesmen. Guess what? Those jobs aren't easy either.

      Thank you so much for your comment... I needed a smile today!! You have hit the nail on the head as far as this channel is concerned... not sure if you've seen any other material on this channel? I'm NOT a professional UA-camr, I'm NOT sponsored or paid to say certain things (so much content is these days). I don't review a car every month and say "this is the best car I have ever driven". This is a down to earth community channel and I dig your comments.
      If you're ever up for a livestream given your motoring background and appreciation for all things Porsche, I'd love to feature you. During lockdown we did a bunch of livestreams which I will link to as below, we featured subscriber material so people could showcase their story, and we even managed to interview the Porsche Cayman 987 designer Pinky Lai. You have skills on track, however I'd also like to say you have skills with the written word. Very eloquently put ;-)

      Enjoy the holiday season to the max. I’ll do my best given that XMAS is cancelled in the UK... if you do ever want to reach out I can be contacted at maxrevscars@gmail.com. Though don’t feel obliged. Most of the people on this channel are middle-aged, which means we don’t care about the fluff commentary, life is too short, just speak the truth. This guy is spot on. I've owned my 07 Gen2 for 10 yrs and i will never sell it as it is the best Car I have ever owned. I drive my Cayman daily and love it, I do all of my maintenance and it is in perfect condition. I can't go a day without some asking me about it and admiring it. When I first bought I was afraid I spent too much money on it but after owning it all these years I can still get a decent amount for it if I ever decided to sell it (not). Great Buy, amazing car and I feel completely blessed to own it!!!

      I know I’m biased as I own the same car as you, but hey, you sum it up well! If I had all the money in the world, maybe my answer would be different. If I read your comment correctly, like you, I spent a little bit more than I could really afford on my Cayman. You know, when you stretch yourself than little bit in the hope it will be worth it. Thankfully it sure was!!!

    I have owned the 987 and 987 Gen 2 and agree 100%. I have also witnessed Porsche throttle back that car rather than build it up. Therefore I installed a proper turbo into my gen 2 and it made the car into what Porsche should have as their premiere line now. I dont understand why they would not want to state and shout out an improvement in the cayman that surpasses the 911 but sometimes mass is hard to move into another direction once it starts moving in volume.

      Rishi, thanks so much for your comment. I've only had my Cayman for 5 months, so with 4 years of ownership under your belt, you certainly are speaking from a position of knowledge!
      I think the 987.2 is a future classic. I've been keeping my eye on the used prices for the last 1 year and they seem to be holding their value well.

      Sure. Yes, I've had minimal depreciation. If you have any questions or want to delve into nuances about the car, feel free to message me. The bittersweet conclusion I've reached is that no other car will comprehensively offer as much on an absolute basis or cost:fun ratio (be it the new Cayman,turbo s, 458, chiron). a baby CGT/'vintage' 918 for sure.

    Great video, I agree. It's fascinating how it's widely known that if Porsche had it to do all over again, that they'd opt to go with the mid-engine platform, rather than restrict the power of the Cayman for the sake of protecting the 911's historical significance (and marketing). Gen 2 Cayman definitely makes the most sense in my opinion, for all the reasons you've stated.

    IMS bearing - From 2006 forward the IMS bearing is virtually a non-factor in the 987 platform (2005 Boxsters are still subject to a higher rate of failure). Porsche installed a modified IMS bearing that virtually eliminated the problem. Reports of IMS bearing failures on 2006+ cars have been almost non-existent on this website. While there may be a small percentage that do fail, the frequency of failures is by far much lower than prior to 2006. So much has been made of IMS failures (class action lawsuit, etc.) that some vendors have created hype for their IMS repair kits and will attempt to sell them to anyone with an IMS, regardless of year/make/model. If you are fearful of an IMS problem in a 2006-2008 987 then have it checked out, but likely you will not have a problem. That isn't so much a track day thing. Seems to affect the odd car that has been stored a lot and not revved much or had oil changed much. Automatics seem more vulnerable than sticks because they typically don't get the revs on a regular basis, but we don't have scientific data only occasional word of mouth postings.

      That is very good to hear Waleed, as I have a 2006 Cayman S. Did they put the double row IMS bearing type into this year as an upgrade to the single row design that I hear had an 8% failure rate ?? Is that the modified bearing design you referred to, or was there something else ?? Thanks and Cheers

    I’m looking for a 987.2 Boxster S right now. I think it’s one of the best looking cars ever made imo especially with a hardtop. Also, it’s way cheaper than the Caymans right now. It’s crazy to me that they cost less than an s2000! Anybody who has the money for a 987.2 Cayman/Boxer should jump on it, future collectible for sure. Hydraulic steering, light weight, good gear ratios, no particulate filers ruining the sound. It’s just not possible to build a car that good anymore.

    Minor descrepancy - the 987.2 3.4 motor is not the same as the 987.1 3.4. Same capacity but completely redesigned heads and block for starters....Not to mention the addition of Direct Fuel Injection to the 987.2 3.4, though the 2.9 retained traditional MPFI. By the time the 981 came out either engine was DFI.

    I like to think the 981 is preferable, because except for the engine, which gives you about the same feeling in both cars, the 981 is a true step up. The entire car is virtually rust free now, i.e. aluminium or plastic body parts and structural parts, which also lowered the weight. So if you want to buy a keeper, seeing how the latest engines sound crap, a 981 can materially be as pristine in 20 years as it is today, but a 987 will be a lot more prone to rust, deterioration...

    Is the steering that much different in the 987? I really love the looks of the 981. Not really massively keen on the electronic break but it'll do. The clutch felt pretty heavy - does the 987 feel comparable? I believe they are both a similar width/size - did you perceive the 987 to be smaller or more nimble when driving especially on tight roads? Thanks

    • @MAXREVS
      @MAXREVS  3 роки тому

      My opinions on steering feel, clutch, and size across the generations. Clutch and size applicable to all generations, the steering references are to the non-GT products. The GT cars have the same weight in the steering, but are more precise, less slack in the system. 987 definitely has the stiffer clutch by a measure. However I like it. It’s an age thing, if you started to drive cars around 1990, it’s perfectly fine. I have driven older cars with WAY stiffer clutches with NO power assistance as a youth. The 718 clutch is softer than the 981, but not as much as the difference between 987 and 981. The steering feel is personal and subjective. On a recent road trip a big difference I found is that when you enter a corner and load up the front wheels by turning, I could feel more through the steering wheel with the hydraulic setup. I do believe there is less feedback through the electric racks in the 981 and 718. However in normal driving it’s fine, and you will soon get used to it. On the size note, yes I do feel the 987 is smaller. Part of this is due to the cabin, just feels smaller. The car is also that little bit smaller. I haven’t driven the 981 or 718 for a long trip like 500+ miles, however I do feel the cabin setup, centre console redesign, and external sizing does make the car feel bigger. Whichever Cayman you choose, you will quickly forget about these issues and just enjoy the car. Saying all of the above, I’d love to own a 718 GTS or GT4 if I had the money.

    Are a lot of those engine issues present in all 987.1 or just the 3.4? As I've heard the 2.7 in first gen was more reliable and didn't have bore scoring issues? So I thought a 987.1 2.7 would be safe

    • @MAXREVS
      @MAXREVS  4 роки тому

      Great question. This subject is covered throughout this video, as we listen to a 987.1 base Cayman owner - ua-cam.com/video/z3Nn364MkfI/v-deo.html
      In short, the 2.7 is more reliable. However it has to be noted, the issues with the 987.1 Sport engine are not that common, and it’s generally over-reported. I saved longer for a 987.2 Sport to avoid this whole issue. I’d say the safest choice is between a 987.1 Base vs Any 987.2. Good luck!

      Thanks for taking the time to comment. Daily driver? For sure, even though I use the train to get to work. The service interval is every 2 years for a minor, and every 4 years for a major. Or after doing something like 20k miles if that comes first... I’d need to check the manual.
      Minor in the UK is around £300 and major around £600.

      I bought it after it had the work done. The previous owner needed to sell it due to divorce. It still had the break in oil in it when purchased. Yes, it now has a 3.8. I have the receipts for it and the total cost was 25k. I talked to the builder (who owns about 40 Porsches) about it to get all of the details and he said as it stands it has about 90 hp more than what it came with. I am not sure as I have not taken it to the Dyno, but it is extremely quick. I am going to do a review on it this Spring once the snow melts here in Minnesota.

Has the water pump been checked for impeller rattle? How are the coolant hoses looking? These I’d say are the more common issues. You didn’t mention if it’s a 987.1, 987.2, 981 or 718. Love the 987 Cayman. Just to correct you: the 987 Cayman was launched in the UK in 2006 with a 3.4-litre 295bhp Cayman S. Then in 2007, the 2.7-litre 245bhp Cayman was introduced - model numbers were much less than the S. The base model is often overlooked by the more powerful 987 S, but dig a little deeper and you will discover that many people consider the base model to be the hidden gem. Check out this article from Chris Harris off Top Gear who owned one. www.arthurlea.com/Porsche/Harris/harris4.jpg?fbclid=IwAR02z6J5RtEEaqQ2mSQQUt-nzUfmhiJ1Uv95nJe8d8esGQ2JcdehzKVvgpY

      1530swimmer Thanks, did I get the launch order wrong? I think for the sake of the graphics and introducing the cars, I wanted to present them in model order, not launch order. It was a while ago, can’t recall what I was thinking, however thanks for the correction. Yeah, that was a proper Chris Harris article before he got super famous. Nice writing style he has.

    • @1530swimmer
      @1530swimmer 4 роки тому

      @MAX REVS Yes, the launch order is incorrect in the video. The non-S was launched later (in the UK at least!) with an updated engine to the S, hence it having a more reliable engine and less production numbers. Keep the excellent content coming! I think we need to see a full generation line up of the Caymans from past to present, that would be epic - video idea? I can provide the base 2.7 in cobalt blue!

    I just bought a 718 - and since I've never driven a 987 G2, I'll not notice what it could do - and probably won't care. I like to buy new and with the upgraded interior. The engine is still behind your head in the 718, right? If you could tell me if I could buy a 987 G2 BRAND NEW, let me know, and I'll cancel my build and buy it.

    • @MAXREVS
      @MAXREVS  6 років тому

      Wow!! This is a seriously interesting question. Thanks for taking the time to comment. Firstly I have to state I was on a budget which didn't allow for buying new. So the budget largely swayed my thinking over the Caymans. This video is a used buyer's guide, and the prices of 718 Caymans at the time of making this video were close to list price. So I ruled them out based on cost and the fact they're turbocharged.
      As for your question... BRAND NEW 987 G2 versus BRAND NEW 718? I can only assume that when you talk about a brand new 987 G2, you're talking about the original model which came off the factory line. In other words the older interior fit out. The 981 Cayman had a better interior than the 987. The 718 builds upon the 981 interior. I can only answer for myself, and that is that the 987 interior build is good enough for me. Is the 981 interior better? Yes. Is the 718 interior even better? Yes. But I'm happy with the 987 interior.
      If my local Porsche dealer offered me a brand new 987 G2, versus a brand new 718 Cayman, I probably would go for the 987 G2. Why? For the engine noise in the cabin, naturally aspirated engine.
      If my local Porsche dealer offered me a brand new 987 G2, versus a brand new 981, I probably would go for the 981. Why? The last of the naturally aspirated Caymans. I could live with the electrically assisted steering.
      May I ask if you test drove a 981 Cayman versus the 718? Many Porsche dealers still hold inventory of used 981s, often at inflated prices compared to new 718s because of the naturally aspirated engines.
      If you test drove the 718 Cayman and were happy with the noise on hard acceleration, heck just keep the order and buy the car!! I mean with all the endless model varieties, Cayman GTS, Cayman GT4, it will only be a matter of years until the 718 Cayman successor comes out. I personally have a thing for the naturally aspirated boxer engine. Prior to my Cayman I owned a Jaguar XFR 5.0L supercharged V8 saloon car. In the case of the Jag it was all about exhaust noise. In the cabin the engine noise wasn't that pronounced.
      What I'm getting at is that every car is unique in itself. Only because the 718 is being compared to the 981, is this engine noise comparison being made. Ultimately if it was me, I'd test drive a used 981 versus a new 718, and let my heart decide between the two. At least if you test drive a 981, and don't like it, it will just make you like your 718 even more. If you do like the 981, then maybe go for one of them? My character type is always to have more information at decision time than less.
      Lastly, whichever Cayman you get, you're sure to enjoy yourself. It's easy to compare the different Cayman generations against each other and nitpick. The really BIG issue is HOW AMAZING THE PORSCHE CAYMAN IS versus the competition like Audi TT, Nissan 370Z, BMW M2... at the end of the day every Cayman is a great car.

    • @johnvandehey7002
      @johnvandehey7002 6 років тому +1

      Great reply. Excellent points. Porsche is the car of my dreams - 911/718 whatever. I'll really like my 718 and I bought it (special order) with all the options I felt I need for $63.7K. A real bargain IMO. I'm not so much a sound guy. All aspects of the Porsche production separate it from most other brands. What I've wanted for my entire driving life - 55 years. It is a Status Symbol and separates itself from most others.

    The engine issues on early Caymans is almost a myth. I'm not saying IMS never happens on those early cars. Just that i failed to find a single example online of a cayman that has suffered an IMS failure and asking my local Porsche specialist he has never come across an IMS failure on a Cayman so it must be quite rare. Bore scoring however is an issue.

    • @MAXREVS
      @MAXREVS  6 років тому +1

      My 2009 Cayman S was my first ever Porsche purchase. I initially noticed a big price difference between the 987 Gen 1 and Gen 2’s when looking at the used market. Further research highlighted the bore scoring issue. That led onto discovering about IMS failure. This was all pretty scary stuff if something went wrong. Maybe I could have bought a 987 Gen 1 and everything would have been fine with the engine, but in the end I went for the 987 Gen 2 and bought from a reputable dealer (instead of private). Main thing I wanted to do with this video was at least raise the awareness. Then the viewer can decide what they do next.

      Its a big stretch Max Revs, and for a lot of enthusiasts on a budget, have family etc, that extra cash is hard to justify, let alone find. Personally, I know of nobody that has had bore scoring issues, and as you said, its maybe 5% of cars. A good pre test and buying from reputabable dealer should put one`s mind at ease. The extra power of the Gen is nice, though its not much really, and hardly noticeable in everyday driving.

I used to work with someone who had an A45 AMG. It used to suffer all sorts of gearbox transmission issues. Finally got fixed with a new gearbox... have a search on reliability issues. • @MAXREVS

      @Full Octane - Oooh, good question! I did look into this issue at the start. For me peace of mind was important. I didn't want to buy my new pride and joy only to discover it was a lemon afterwards, i.e. engine suffered from engine bore scoring. So the choice was actually:
      (Gen1 S) + ((Engine inspection cost) OR (Speciality backed car warranty purchase))
      (Gen2 Base)
      Getting a special warranty covering the engine proved difficult.
      The DFI engines in the Gen2 give you extra power over the Gen1, as well as peace of mind. So I'd probably go for the Gen2 Base.

    Interesting video especially since you seem to prefer the car I drive as my daily!! ;-) I have a 987.2, 2009 Cayman S manual 6 speed and love almost everything about it except the stock throttle response seemed delayed and the clutch uptake is a bit high off the floor for my liking... I've been driving manual cars for over 40 years from hot rods ('68 Camaro with a built 327 including a six pack set up), to little roadsters ('72 Fiat 850 Sport or '77 MGB), and the combo of both ('75 Triumph TR6 with a Ford 289 under the hood/bonnet), and my other present love, a slightly modified '76 BMW 2002, with its light flywheel and mechanical throttle linkage, but I have to say that this Cayman S is the only car that I have stalled more than once while softly launching... I was wondering if anyone else has had a similar experience...?? As a solution to make the throttle response a bit more active for the Cayman, I installed a "Sprint Booster" which has seemed to help with the electronic throttle delay! It now has little to no delay when stomping down! Just thought that I would throw this out there...

      Fantastic comment and thanks for sharing your experiences here!
      In the 8 months I have had the car, I've developed a habit whereby I give it too much throttle when moving off in 1st gear. Now you mention it, it's probably because when I first got the car I stalled it a few times.
      No idea what a 'sprint booster' is but very interested to find out more. Thanks!

    • @innervisionsOD1
      @innervisionsOD1 6 років тому +2

      Thank you for your kind response! The "Sprint Booster" is an easy, hands on install of basically a plug in device between the throttle pedal and the car's electronic control module. It costs a bit less that $300US. Here's a quote from their site, "Sprint Booster reprograms the acceleration signals in your stock ECU, so that your pedal responds quicker with little to no lag." It also has quite a few choices on how quick the response can be for your personal preference. I believe some Cayman's have a quicker throttle response with a special mode button, but the actual option escapes me at this moment, and my car does not have this option . The "Sprint Booster" does make it smoother for blipping the gas pedal when downshifting or heel towing, and it seems to get the revs up faster when accelerating. Before I installed this, the throttle had a bit of a marshmallow feel. There are some UA-cam videos on it. By the way...I do not work for them or have any financial connection to their company. Just an enthusiast!! :-) Cheers!!

      www.porscheinspections.com/content/downloads/M96_M97_GTPorsche.pdf
      My belief is that for the 987.1, the different engine sizes have differing levels of probability of being affected by bore scoring. Though yes, the smaller engine had fewer issues with bore scoring than the larger one. Not sure about being 'bulletproof' though.
      I was making the point to get the DFI engines in the Gen 2 if budget allows for peace of mind.

      If you find a good one, do it! I bought my 6 speed 2009 / Gen 2 in 2013, and four years later I'm loving it as much as the day I bought it. The handling is the best of the best, absolutely glorious. It's super precise, but not the least bit twitchy. It's extremely stable, well-mannered and perhaps best of all, forgiving. The engine, trans, clutch, brakes; all perfection. If you like driving, you will love driving this car. Without spending crazy supercar money, the Porsche Cayman 987 Gen 2 is as good as it gets. One caveat, however: shifter cables. Google it.

      Yeah, they have an unfortunate tendency to break more than they should, which is never. One of mine broke, leaving me stuck in first gear. Fortunately enough, however, I was only a few miles from home when it happened, so no tow truck. You can imagine just how much fun THAT particular drive was.
      I bought a pair of Numeric Racing cables and switched them out myself. They function as advertised, no issues. They're great. I have peace of mind once again. Here are some links:

    Wrong - Gen 1 launched, or should that be lunched with the 3.4s - the 2.7 followed later and is fine, and the 6 speed version of that is rare as hen's teeth and the pick of the bunch. Gen 1 have more character, quirky roofline which gives them a definite 'look' less plasticy interiors too than the gen 2.Of the Gen 2 the 2.9 is bulletproof, rare but hard to find with good spec. As always with Porsche, the base cars are often the best road cars. That applies with this model too.Mine? A gen1 2.7 6 speed with PASM. Very happy!

      @MAXREVS  6 років тому

      Just to say I don’t know but will ask around. I’ve had my Cayman 8 months now... it was full when I bought it, so will check my oil levels when I’m next on a flat surface.

    • @daithilacha1
      @daithilacha1 6 років тому

      Thanks for the quick reply on that. I am hearing from various people that a slightly high oil consumption is normal, like 1 litre every 2000 miles. That would strike me as being a little high.

    • @MAXREVS
      @MAXREVS  6 років тому

      Hi Jimmy M. From the less than scientific poll I conducted (5 people I know who own Porsches, all different models), they said they have never had to top their engine oil other than routine services. However Porsche seem to officially state some oil usage is considered acceptable (was told to check my owner’s manual for the rate of oil usage). Mileage of engine and other things are factors, but I don’t want to speculate here. Sorry can’t be of any more help. None of the people I asked had a 987 Gen 1 either.

    • @daithilacha1
      @daithilacha1 6 років тому +1

      Thanks Max revs. That is interesting. I also have an Audi 2litre TDI and find that I need to top that up from time to time with about a third of a litre of oil. Have owned that car since 2011 and it runs great in daily use. Same goes for my motorcycles, so I am fine with using maybe a third to half a litre every 5000 miles espc if the car is driven briskly

    • @MAXREVS
      @MAXREVS  6 років тому

      I fully agree with your general approach. If there are no major issues why worry? My previous used car (unknown to me at the time of purchase) was resprayed back and front. Someone told me the car *could* have been in a front end collision with a light shunt in the rear. The car drove fine and there were no issues with it, yet I always had a nagging doubt about that car.
      Then again the previous owner/garage could have painted it just because it was looking tatty with some minor parking scuffs. Knowing it *could* have been in a small crash drove me crazy. I was better off not listening to speculation and just enjoying the car. Bit like your Cayman, it drives fine, it’s normal according to the manufacturer to use a bit of oil, so just enjoy the car.

      Hi Jimmy! Just came back from a 600+ mile roadtrip. I have oil information... as I was revving the car rather hardly for a prolonged period of time... my oil level went from maximum, to mid-way between max and min. Over just 2 days of vigourous driving. I checked the oil level again on the way home, and it went slightly higher, i.e. 1/4 below maximum. I learnt 2 things... 1) oil usage is heavily dependent on how much you rev the engine over a prolonger period of time, in my case, lots of 2nd and 3rd gear roads. 2) the electronic measurement system is not 100% reliable. On the same surface, I got 2 different oil readouts over a 2 minute period of time. I am guessing, maybe it takes around 2 mins from starting (the engine was proper hot beforehand anyway), for all the oil to fully circulate. Oddly, the 1st oil reading said maximum, the second reading (after oil had the chance to flow), read 50% below max. Bottom line, my engine drinks too. When you ask other drivers about their oil usage, the manner in which they rev the engine and for how long really is a big factor, given the fact I managed to consume so much oil in just 2 days and 600+ miles.

    • @daithilacha1
      @daithilacha1 6 років тому

      That is great Intel MR, so thanks for posting. Yes, I would expect noticeably increased oil consumption with revs, just like a plummeting fuel gauge !!! I will keep your comments in mind re the electronic measurement system for the oil levels. Of course, just like my Audi, I assume you would get a red light warning of some sort if oil levels dropped beyond a certain point, though one wants to avoid running that low. At least my bikes have an easy to see and foolproof oil level window. Cheers Jimmy

      One other thing Max Revs, did you ever get that under body measurement for me ?? My car had Eibach springs fitted by the previous owner and sits lower than I would ideally like. Not much clearance with the 19 inch wheels and the bodywork, though it looks cool !!!

      That's a good question! This video was the by-product of my thought process when buying a used Cayman. On the second hand market I hardly came across any 986s. The few I saw had over 100k miles on the clock. That was TOO USED a car for me. So you're right, given how old the 986s are, they are often very used when they enter the second hand market. I wanted a new looking car hardly used, which for me is around 30k-50k miles.

      Thanks!! Yeah, I watched these cars for a while and I eventually just KNEW I needed to own a 981 before the flat 6 went away forever. When the GTS was released I decided that was the one I had to have. A friend of mind had a GT4, which is obviously better, but very raw and uncomfortable. The GTS splits the difference by being a little faster than the standard S model, but with more creature comforts like PASM and 18-way seats. When the 718 came out I had absolutely zero interest. This is my Dream Porsche.

    DO YOUR HOMEWORK FIRST... Cayman and boxter have the same engines, the IMS issue and # 6 cylinder becoming oval because not cooled adequately- faulty engines - do not touch any of them 2007 to 1998. Thats why they are so cheap.

  • @dlg5485
    @dlg5485 6 років тому +2

    I must *completely* disagree with your assessment of the 718. You can't possibly have actually driven one if you believe it's "lifeless" to drive. Let's be honest, your moaning is really just about the engine sound, isn't it? The 718, with either flat 4 engine, outperforms its predecessor in every way, due to its wider, flatter torque curve. This is simply undeniable. Now if you're just talking about the 'feeling' that the engine's sound gives you, that's a very different and a very subjective matter, but if you're trying to suggest that the 718 Cayman isn't still the same brilliant driver's car it always was, I call bullsh*t.

      Hi there and thanks for your comments. I just love it when people show their passion and enthusiasm, as you have with your comments. I am going to check my exact words in this video when I get a better signal on my mobile. You are bang on! It is about the engine noise from within the cabin. I used to own a Jag XFR with 500bhp. I know the 718 engine is better in all the ways an engine should be, apart from it's soul. I agree this is totally objective, and not at all scientific. So no offence intended to 718's. Just not to my musical tastes.

    • @MAXREVS
      @MAXREVS  6 років тому

      D LG Right, so I checked the audio transcript and it is open to interpretation... “that engine is just lifeless to me, it doesn’t communicate with you”. I am, as you have suggested, simply talking about the aural characteristics of the 4 cylinder engine.

      yes but you would thiink Porsche, being the founder(Pioneer) of turbos, would have made one that doesn't lag. there is a good 1-2 seconds of turbo lag when below 3-4k rpm, which compared to the inline 6... there is none. Many manufacturers have found ways to almost eliminate turbo lag. Also the inline 6 can handle more power, you can get 60 whp... with a few simple bolt ons without worrying about getting a tune that might harm engine life

    • @dlg5485
      @dlg5485 6 років тому

      +Kohfu
      The 718 S has almost no perceptible lag, due to the twin scroll, variable vane turbo design that Porsche uses. These new advanced turbos almost eliminate the lag problem. I had the pleasure of driving a friend's 718 Cayman S for an entire day a few months back and it's an utterly spectacular car to drive. I actually prefer it over the 3.4 due to the much improved power band and it doesn't run out of breath at the top...it just keeps pulling to red line, which is amazing for a turbo. It is now more fun to drive on back roads because you don't need to wind it out to 7000 rpm to get to the power.
