Carving A Walking Stick For My Sign Painter Grandpa
Вставка
- Опубліковано 14 жов 2024
- This video is all about carving a walking stick for my retired sign painter grandfather with no lathe and explores some ways to heavily customize a cane. My grandpa was turning 85 and I wanted to make him something very special for his birthday. The last time I saw him I noticed he was stooping a little due to his walking stick being a little short so I decided it was high time he had a very unique and personalized way of walking around - with his new Retired Sign Painter's Cane.

I don't have a lathe in my small shop, so if it wasn't for Jimmy DiResta's video about making a sword cane without a lathe I wouldn't have attempted this project. Maybe if I was a little more ambitious I should have made a hidden sign painting brush that came out of the cane 😂. Check out Jimmy's video here: • ✔ DiResta Sword in a Cane
And another thanks goes out to The Crafsman - Steady Craftin for his video on easily applying transfers to wood. I used this technique to get a dead-accurate template to follow when I was carving in the personalizations on the cane. Thanks Crafsman! • EASY Photo Transfer to...

One last thanks to Lee's Better Letters in Portland for supplying the One Shot Labels. You guys made an old sign painter and his grandson very happy!

I just ran across this video. I am from Portland. My parents owned Portland Sign & Neon. In the 80s I managed Denco Sales, another sign supply house. I knew Bob Patey and called on his shop. It's indeed a small world. I found this video while looking for ideas for carving handles for the fractal burned canes I make as a hobby!
Thoroughly enjoyed watching this! You used not only a spokeshave, but a custom dowel plate. Mighty fine product, my friend. Glad the transfer trick worked for you! I was pleasantly surprised to see that you actually cut the ruler marks into the wood. That just adds SO much to the quality of the piece. I'm stunned by this project - the meaning behind it, and the workmanship involved.
TheCrafsMan SteadyCraftin that means a lot coming from you CrafsMan! I’m continuously amazed by the friendliness of the crafting community in UA-cam and you’re no exception. Thank you for taking the time to leave these kind words and as you say, “keep steady craftin’ “ brother!
From one Old Sign Painter to another.. What a perfect gift!
Inspiring.the patey family has been known in pltd. For many decades.thank for the shout out to Lee @ Lee's better letters he's been outstanding in his support of sign artist for over 40 yrs. .a great artist, but a better person. Love h.b.
You must be the best grandson ever, and your grandfather must be wonderful too. Beautiful cane!
Thank you for the kind words Catherine! Funny enough, that’s my Mum’s (grandpa’s daughter) name
Thank you for sharing about your grandfather and the stick also mainly for the story of your grandfather as I also too think of my grandfather because grandfather is gone 😢 💔 thank you once again for the love of story
Well done your grandpa looks really happy and I’m sure he’s proud of you too
Thank you Gudjon, he seems to really love it which warms my heart!
What an awesome and thoughtful gift for your grandfather. Thanks for sharing the presentation part of your project. That really made the video for me...
Thank you very much!
Beautiful, thoughtful gift. Just such a beautiful thing to do.
I can gladly report that he still loves it and uses it daily 😊
This is so heartwarming.. genuinely brought a tear to my eye and sent me down memory lane thinking of my own memories with my grandpa. What a wonderful way to commemorate a life in service of his industry.
He's definitely a great man that deserved a great cane. Cheers acid!
@@Craftswright Side note.. I watch ONE damn video about a cane and now the UA-cam algorithm thinks I'm obsessed with cane-making.. I've seen 7 separate recommended videos on cane making since watching this.. haha. Totally worth it though.
😂😂😂
What a beautiful piece and a great tribute to your grandpa.
really sweet of you to do that for your granddad and I appreciate all the detail you put into the craftsmanship of this piece. The extra long half inch marker was definitely a nice attention to detail!
Let's Plays I may not be able to make a perfectly round cane without a lathe but I can pay attention to detail! 😂
Thank you for the kind words!
The thought and care blessed all involved, a momento that will stay in the family, well done
A wonderful production! I am about to make a cane for my older brother, who, after a year of numerous surgeries and physical therapy following a horrible accident is now able to get around with a cane rather than the wheel chairs and walkers he has been using. I will certainly use this video has a prime resource for my work. Thank you!!
Wow, I'm touched by this video.
Thank you Christie! Do you have a sign painter in your family too, or was it the sentimentality of the project?
Beautiful. That’s the coolest custom cane ever.
Thank you my friend! Meant a lot to me to make it and from what I hear it means a lot to my grandpa which is the important part 😊
I appreciated this one as well. I mostly loved the level of detail you went to with the flicks of paint and the sign paint labels. I don't know your family but, you explained the important parts. I couldn't help but smile when your grandpa said, "What a guy!"
Keep 'em coming. I'll share away.
Man, Justyn, thank you so much for your viewership and your deep and detailed comments! This project was a special one for me and I love that that's coming across to others. Cheers to you and yours bud!
Nicely done man, love how you breathe life into your family's legacy. And Brenda sure ain't gonna be happy about her lip stick, liner.
Thanks brother glad you enjoyed it! This was pretty easy to pour some passion into since my grandpa is so important to our family.
You can bet your butt I had to buy her two new ones just to keep the waters calm around the house 😂 worth it.
Oh man... Fantastic.

Oh man - I recently did my first walking stick and a video it for my dads 70th but I kinda want to take it back and throw it away now after seeing this! Absolutely so much thought and little nods to his history went into this I just loved this build! :D. Well done sir!

El Catrin C haha I’ll take it! For some reason the majority of my videos have no dislikes...even though I don’t think my content is the greatest. Maybe people are just being nice 😬
@@Craftswright well, is not the greatest, but is really far from bad , and who needs to be the greatest ? the important thing is making what we like
El Catrin C I’ll take far from bad any day. Thanks for the feedback and kind word friend. Cheers!
