    I make canes. You made a point on the wood dowel holding the handle on. My first one like that broke. Bow I use 1/4 inch thread rod and epoxy to hold the handles.
    Nice job on the cane, it turned out nice
    Keep putting out videos.

    Cane looks great. How tall is the cane do you remember. the video cut short when you were measuring the length. Also, I like to get a template of the handle where can I find it.

    • @TheBeardedWoodworker

      My mom is about 6 feet tall, and I believe the cane was 34"-36". I don't remember specifically. You are the first to ask for a template, so I'll have to try and see if I have it somewhere. I should have just uploaded it. Sorry.

    Nice job on your cane project. Nice to see your creative recycling of parts too. Just a little info for you and other fellow wood workers. Lowes & Home Depot carry the rubber chair leg covers or feet in different sizes 3/4" and 1" for sure and maybe a few other sizes. Happy wood working. Hope the info was useful. GF1. 😁😁😁

      Thanks! Yes, I agree. Luckily I found something that would work. The closest Home Depot and Lowes to me is 2 hours away, and I ran out of time to order anything online. Thanks for the comment!

      Very nice looking cane, it would even look good if you left it purple and a natural shaft.I am always happy to see family caring for each other,mine throughout history tried to kill others off in Scotland.

    I make walking sticks using 1 inch diameter dowels from Lowe"s/Home Depot with old doorknobs on top and leather grips below. I've wrapped some duct tape at the bottom to take up room for some rubber tips if slightly larger.

    The video suggested but did not clearly show how you cut the handle blank. Did you start with a RECTANGLE??? Would it not been more cost effective to cut the basic shape with a band saw? By doing so you could have cut two handles from the same rectangle of wood, one handle top facing one side of the wood's long edge, the other handle top, inverted, facing the other long edge.
    By forming the basic handle(s) in this manner you would eliminate a good bit of scrap, which means less overall cost.

    When you said at about 1.50 that you couldn't remember what the guy who sold the purpleheart to you called it, but the wood was was about 7/8ths of an inch, did he call it "one inch nominal" by any chance?
    That's one inch rough-sawn timber which has then been planed for you. If it's done on one side, the wood comes out at about 7/8" actual, or 13/16" if it's been planed both sides. I think in the US you call it S1S or S2S for single or double faced.

    I love the project but felt bad when i heard you say that piece of purple heart cost you almost $20.. Don't get me wrong, well worth $20 to make mom happy.. but I might question the integrity of your supplier. That board was approx $30 a board foot, which is almost 3 times what its worth.

    • @TheBeardedWoodworker
      @TheBeardedWoodworker  6 років тому +1

      Hey David, where I live, we don't have any real good woodcraft supply type places, so I was pretty excited I didn't have to order on line. But the 2 foot board cost $20, which was $10 a board foot. It was cheaper than what I was finding online, and I was just excited to find some. I'm not sure, because I don't know much about exotic wood as this was my first purchase, where you came up with the $30 a board foot. Thanks for the comment, though. :-)

    • @davesatosky5840
      @davesatosky5840 6 років тому +2

      a 4/4 board that is 4" wide and 24" long is .69 board feet, at $20 that is approx $29/board foot.

    • @TheBeardedWoodworker
      @TheBeardedWoodworker  6 років тому +1

      I see. I guess I was finding Purple Heart online for $12-$17 for 1/4"×2"×12". Nothing seamed to be as big, so I thought I was getting g a good deal. Thanks for the tip, and I'll keep that in mind next time.

      at the end of the day you did get a good deal, your mother loved it im sure and thats the best deal of them all ;) .. I did not mean to be patronizing, i have been a professional cabinet door maker for 20 years, have bought more hard wood than i can probably imagine... if your ever in central pennsylvania look up Bemenn woodwork and will take care of you ;p
