We always knew they were their own separate entities from another realm. Meaning they’re not even an alien like Deoxys and Elgeem, they’re their own anomalies. Even the way they were introduced into the series showed their not like any Pokémon we’ve seen before. IIRC, it’s stated in official media that they’re not even what we call Pokémon. To think that all that lore meant “Oh, clearly just like legendaries, they must be!” is severe cope on their part tbh. It was all but confirmed and all they could focus on was how they view “Legendary” Pokémon. Literally the Mythical debate all over again.

Technically something alien to your realm is still an alien the term does not apply exclusively to extra-terrestrials it can even be used to refer to someone from a different nation technically. Please learn the difference:D

I don't think they could even be classified *as* Pokémon. The Aether Foundation had to make a specific Pokéball in order to catch them.

You know how we psuedo-legendaries? I think Ultra Beasts and Paradox Pokemon should be considered quasi-legendaries (except of course for legendary variants and the Raidon duo). They have a lot of traits of legendaries (high stats, ties to the story, gender and egg group unknown) but they're essentially too "common", being treated as regular Pokemon in their native environment

TECHNICALLY, they're just classified as "Pokémon" because... they're creatures that have special powers. But they're just extra-dimensional Pokémon, meaning in their dimensions they're just "Pokémon" or whatever name them people call them.

Gah I'm so nostalgic about the UBs now!Tbh, I dont think the code is ever great evidence compared to what's officially revealed/what's presented to us in the games.. we aren't really supposed to see that stuff. Love little pokemon fandom lore vids like this, hope we get to see more ultra beasts in the future

  • @UnchainedPandoran

While not labeled as legendarys, I include the UBs as well as mythicals and paradoxes under a general legendary banner. So while yes, UBs aren’t legendarys, they’re still rare and much more powerful Pokemon that have a limited availability. That’s how I’ve always looked at it.

  • @jeremymorris345

As far as I'm concerned, Ultra Beast will always be an off shoot Legendaries, just like Mythicals. UB were clearly designed to be comparable to Legendary Pokémon. Similar stats, obtained late game, non breedable, ect. Even to the point where they are marked as Sublegends in the game, until just being given there own category.
UBs aren't on the list of Legendary Pokémon but neither are Mythicals. I don't see people complaining when someone calls a Mythical a Legendary because of how similar they are.
Lastly, every time there is a Legendary Catching Gauntlet such as Ultra Wormholes and Dynamax Adventures, the Ultra Beasts are there. They are also a special mission during the Legendary Missions of the Crown Tundra DLC.
It's clear that Ultra Beast are intended to be similar to Legendaries, but have a special category like Mythicals.

Great video SaberIce, you just earned a new subscriber! I was always on Team "They're not legendary pokemon" and I'm glad I was right in the end. None of the official websites have EVER referred to them as Legendary pokemon & the gen 7 pokedex merely refers to them as "Ultra Beasts" and nothing else. The Scarlet and Violet Website refers to Koraidon as both "Legendary" and a Paradox pokemon, so the would've given the Ultra Beasts similar treatment if they fell under the Legendary category.

Ultra Beast and Paradox Pokémon are their own set of Pokémon and have never been Legendary except for Cosmog, Cosmoem, Solgaleo, Lunala, Necrozma*, Koraidon, and Miraidon. I think the clear distinction has always been there, it's just that the confusion comes from how the Ultra Beast were represented and the inconsistencies of said Ultra Beast.
As you put it, Ultra Beast are Ultra Beast, not Legendary.

Gonna be honest, the reason they were in code as sublegendaries and allowed in the legendary tournament, is because they are statted like legendaries, and to the average player who could care less the difference between meloetta aria and meloetta pirouette, they were legendaries. Until only 2020, I was still casual enough of a player to consider them kegendary because they were strong and rare. To the average casually playing the game 7 year old, they are rare, strong, and story important pokemon, thus making them legendaries. Thats what kids saw, and game freak allowed them in the tournament, cause they were statted like legendaries. The tournament wasnt about lore or story, it was about gameplay. Its why i suspect if they do a legendary tournament for scarlet/violet, any paradox pokemon will be allowed even though most of them aren't legendary.

What a great video! I loved that u fairly talked about this debate and gave the correct answer as for myself I have always thought of Ultra Beasts paradox pokemons and also Mythical pokemon as there own category of pokemon with there own unique distinctions from normal pokemon and legendary pokemon alike
I would love to see u cover this topic again with both the 'Mythical' pokemon are and what sub sub legendary pokemon are and basically answering the same questions in 2 separate videos
A sub sub legendary pokemon is I believe a fan term that originated from somewhere and someone online I believe that there sopose to be pokemon with relatively high base states that may be relatively 'strong' and may in some cases be the mascot for the region but some regions may have more then 1 sub sub legendary
some examples may include with incorrect spelling urshifu, ursaluna, ogerpon, togakiss, lucario, zoriark, electivire, aggron magmorter, gyaridos etc
there are probably more pokemon that fit that fit this niche and small category that I haven't listed

I think that there name is selfexplaning in it self "ultra beast". Deoxys is also a alien but he doesn't have a new catagory he's just a mythical that you can find more than one on earth or near it, legendary being only one(atleast in the games) and having responsibility and a role to fulfil that impacts the poke world, and ultra beast just like mythical and normal have a whole family tree doesn't have a significant game changing role the only thing makes them special are looks and imance states and the fact you have travel to another part of the dimension, time, universe to catch them hence being called ultra beast and having there own catagory. But this lefts a question to beg, if they are not pokemon how are pokeballs able to catch them? Does pokeballs also have power to capture humans?

Nice video, I enjoyed it and I learned more about a debate that I didn't really know was going on for so long! I always saw UBs as their own thing myself. I want to add that while I don't know how exactly legendary Pokémon were categorized in the games' code in older generations, the distinction between legendary and sub-legendary Pokémon has existed for a pretty long time; it can be seen in battle facilities which usually restrict certain, traditionally stronger legendaries from being used while allowing others since gen 3. Even the original Battle Tower in Pokémon Crystal had some sort of distinction made between them by allowing the use of Mewtwo, Lugia and Ho-Oh only on the level 70+ settings unlike the legendary bird and beast trios. These separate categories of legendary Pokémon have always been relevant in the official competitive scene of VGC, where sub-legendaries are allowed far more often.
