Should I buy a Weihrauch HW97k? The best air rifle in the World?

- My personal opinion on the Weihrauch HW97k air rifle. This is purely an opinion, if you disagree you are right too!
Stocks may go up as well as down. Always read the label
www.airrifletuning.com
I have a 97 with the sporter stock, it's my meditation gun. I have PCPs for pesting but if I just want to sit and shoot gongs and spinners it's always the 97 I reach for. I have a TbT kit to fit to it but I think I lucked out because mine shoots as well as any airgun I've ever fired (including other 97s, even pro tuned ones), has done since I took it out of the box, and I'm a great believer in "If it ain't broke don't fix it."
I got a brand new HW99s and gave it straight to my gunsmith, he shortened the barrel and threaded a silencer then cleaned and tuned.
It is hands down my favourite springer, I combined it with a red dot for roaming around the farm. It's so smooth and really quiet for a springer and fires with a pneumatic thump type noise rather than a bangy twang and it is really lightweight.
I also own a AA TX200 and just sold my .177 HW97k as I can't see me ever using in instead of the 99s and TX.
Me too 99s barrel chopped and tinbum kit, debure and lube. Nice weight for a Carry gun..
I had a pro sport, and a 97kt loved them both but the weight of them in the field was killing me (tennis elbow and golfers elbow) so bought a hw99s in .22 absolutely loved it and started looking into tuning potential. Found out what sandwell field sports can do & ordered an imp mk11. Then really fell in love! The following year I ordered a sandwell tuned hw95 in .177 absolutely fantastic also. Im going to buy a hw97kt stainless and have a go with the tinbum kit myself.
I love my HW77K best springer out there and have a 3-9 Hawke scope with Pistol grip stock and I installed one of your Maxi kits. Shoots .22 at just over 11ft/lbs at 25 yards 10 shots make a hole smaller than a 5p
Agree have a laminate hw77 .22 open sight and super accurate no tunning
Hi Nick, another TBT excellent video. The HW 77 and 97 you helped me with are doing well. I think what I like the most about them is once you get the TBT Maxi-Pro kit installed they are easier to shoot well. As the way the rifles come to the USA they plenty powerful and do put out close to 15 ft lbs. What I found is at that power level the hand shock was difficult to allow a good follow through. When I installed the Maxi-Pro kits they settled down and the shot cycle was much less harsh. Now the gentle thud of the shot allows a good follow through. Might not seem like much but with all the action of the spring and piston going on before the pellet leaves the barrel the less shock the shooter has to deal with the easier it is to shoot the rifle accurately. Please keep posting this type of video. The in-depth explanations are very valuable.

Thanks@@halmason9252 . We chat regularly by email, and as you know I am always looking for new ways to learn about a guns shooting characteristics. In my opinion the most accurate gun you own is the one you use the most., the gun you use the most will be the one you enjoy shooting the most.
That is how TbT was born😁
I have a 77k full power from new and it is only getting better the twang has gone and it's more accurate than anything , it's in 22 built in 2017 stock, and I love it❤
I have had a TX200 for 18 months. Was very disappointed with it "out of the box" although I put it down to not shooting springers for 30-odd years. The anti-beartrap is indeed a pain in the arse but a TBT maxi kit halved my group size. 👍
if you want to sale the tx200 then tell me, you go for Hw97k
I tried a 97K with a thumbhole stock at my club the other week. I was very impressed. It fitted my hand beautifully and felt a lot lighter than it was because the balance was so good. I'm trying to tell myself that I don't need one, but I'm weakening.
you need one
@@desmonddarkest I needed 2, but just sold the .177, keeping the .22. Mine are 14.5fpe rifles.
You need two.
I have had the Maxi Short Stroke kits in my 97KT and TX200 Mk111 for over a year. They run around 11.2 ft/lb and 11.4 ft/lb respectively. When fitted with my Element Helix, they are both capable of hitting Golf balls at 65 yards. At present it sits on the 97. In very little wind I repeatedly hit a 15mm spinner at 65 yards.
I originally installed the TBT kit into the 97, to try and eliminate hold sensitivity, and generally improve the feeling of the recoil. Out of the box I was directly comparing it to the TX. For me the 97 just felt a bit too workman like, twangy, not quite agricultural, a bit "That will do kind of feeling." The 97 now makes a very nice thunk, is super consistent and a delight to shoot with 8.44 grain FTT pellets. It was so nice to shoot that I installed a Maxi kit into the TX. This now prefers JSB Exact Heavies 10.34 grain.
At present I am playing with a Sytong HT60 on the TX. Different. The 97 has the Helix on, paired with a Chinese Mini8 range finder.
Thankyou for such a detailed appraisal. I only say it how I find it, many agree👍
Hi Nick, still loving my 77, particularly now I’ve put a walnut CS thumb hole stock on it. I agree they are heavy, only took mine out on a walk around hunt once and it was a long day lugging it about, a sling would be the answer however. I shan’t go into the details of the day my TbT was fitted 😂 but will say… I’m very pleased with it.
Hi Nick, nice video as always! My 97 with your TBT kit has become a laser...at 25 yards it's 5 shots one hole, I'm not having fun anymore in fact I pushed the target to 50 yards😅
Sounds great!
Fitted your TBT kit to my 97 today, tranformed it! I knew it would as I've got one of your TBT 's on my 41 year old 77, tranformed that! I bought the 97 second hand but I know it's never been apart before because I found exactly what you said, horrible manufacturer's grease 🙄
I will be doing a video on grease removal very soon👍
My blue laminate 97 is Nick Simmons tuned. Superb accuracy and handling.
Awesome rifles. I highly recommend them. Yes the weight can be an issue for some but the performance is great.
I own a ProSport as well which is also great and less front end heavy but accuracy wise there's no significant difference. However the ProSport cost me almost £600 more and can be more fiddly to load especially in .177.
Great video. 👍👍
Best rifle i ever had in 177 loved H&N field target trophy ammo 3x9x40 scope
97K and 77K owner here. both 4.5mm. 97K has vortek tuning kit 16j. 77K has TBT kit. factory spring 20j i cut 6 coils now shoots great 17-18 J. thanks for everything you do for the airgun community! greetings from Bulgaria
Thanks Nick enjoyed the video I have a 97 with a tbt kit fitted and it’s awesome 🤩
Excellent video...keep up this series.
Nice one. Big up Andy BlackMax. Sorted my Rekord out a treat.
Thats a stuning lookin rifle dude
I love the Airmax 2-7X32. Have mounted this scope on several of my HW's. The perfect scope for the HW30 👍 In my opinion has the Vintage series a to thick crosshair for precision target shooting and do not have the half dots. On my HW97 and 77 i have the Airmax 30SF 4-16X44 compact to get good acces to the loading port. My choice for hunting is the HW35 because the barrel latch makes the cocking cycle very quiet The TX200 is a no go for me because of the same reason. Great vid. Cheers!
Agreed, the small magnification also suits the Pard scope mounted nightvision very well as it has its own magnification already, you get a very narrow field of view with high mag scopes
Agree about the little Airmaxs, great scopes, but after a lot of swapping I settled on an MTC Viper-Pro 10x44 fixed on my 97. Easy to get to the loading port and lighter than a zoom, which helps keep the weight forwards too.
@@davidpaylor5666 Good with a fixed magnification mate. I have a 6X SWFA on my Airarms S410 i use for pest control. No risk to mess up with hold overs on different magnifications. Mistakes on paper targets are forgivable not on animals. Cheers!
@@rapalaron6348 Spot on.
A trend that makes me laugh is these lads with ultra-light magnesium chassis on their sub-12 PCPs but with x56mm scopes on top. I always think you should fit the smallest scope that will do the job.
@@davidpaylor5666 Right David. I call those lads nerds 😆 Using bipods and trigger sticks for their "light" PCP's and can't hit a soda can on 30 yards with free hand shooting.
I have recently bought a HW 97KT STL and i just love it, so nice to shoot and involving the tota experience 😊.
I had a 97KT/177 for around 5 years.. absolutely amazing accuracy ( RWS Superdomes) the only reason I sold it was when your lugging it around the fields for several hours the weight became an issue (partly due to a bad back), I now have a HW95K/177 which again is amazingly accurate (again with RWS Superdomes).
Love my (totally standard and unmodified) '77. *Insanely* accurate, and never noticed any 'twang', but VERY hold sensitive. Food for thought - thanks!
Yes oh yes go and get one i did so about six months ago and haven't regret have both weihrauch and air arms and love'em both
Hi Nick. That 97k long i picked up the other month is running in nicely, and you won't believe it, but i picked up an original mk1 a couple of weeks later after searching for years. That's life init. Lol
So, that's a 77k, a 97k, and 2x long 97k.The troublee is i seem to have a spare kit, so i might have to "find" a 77 as well.
Shocked you sell more tx kits mucka.
Any excuse for another gun Mark?😂
it is my favorite airgun for 15 years
Just found your channel subscribed straight away liked your information
I love what you did with "shortening the barrel" by sliding the shroud rearward. Brilliant! 97HC!😄
Nice stock👍Glad to see CSofS is now offering laminate options.
Great video,keep them coming 👍🏼👍🏼
That Hawke Airmax 2-7x32 is a cracking little scope. If the reticle was a tad thicker, it would have been my all time favorite springer scope.
Super video, thank you!
Great looking stock sir. As an owner of a TX and Prosport, both great rifles in their own right, I prefer my 97.
The twang in a Weihrauch subsides after it is broke in. It may take a couple of tins but it is worth to allow for that.
Brilliant video content, confirming my preference for the HW97. Ive tracked one down and bought it.
Great video, looking at the HW97 blue laminate 😎👈🔫🎯
That modification to the barrel weight looks good, if I was to copy your idea I'd be tempted to try and copy the underlever catch on my mkII Eclipse and keep a couple of inches on the lever, and it would be different.
I have both 97k and a 77. The 77 is the better of the two, especially if you can get one with a 25mm piston. The "moderator type thing", does nothing, completely pointless.
I’m waiting for the next shipment at air guns of Arizona (it’s been in 7 months now) but I put a few dollars on a 97-Kt with the walnut thumb hole stock. I keep checking on it every few weeks but it doesn’t seem to be in stock yet. They do have a 125 year anniversary edition in stock, it’s a red lament with all the fancy stuff engraved on it. But they want $300, over the price of walnut thumbhole one. I plan on hunting and plinking with it and maybe look into HFT. I have a few nice scopes to mount on it. I’m buying a rifle to use, not to sit on the shelf. Anyway I have really enjoyed your videos and I just subscribed and look forward to seeing your next one soon. Thanks so much, Kurt Goss
That is a long wait Kurt! Maybe next time you speak to them you could ask them to stock TbT kits, we send up to 20 a week to the states which makes it look like there would be a market for them👍
I just bought a old hw 77 mk1 , rifle is in mint condition like brand new, i do not really like it because of the low power, I’m in the states,, but now you mentioned the reasons why people like those with 25mm piston , i maybe understand more and use it for short distance, but I do prefer more power like my hw 98, 👍👋
you are great Nick !!!
I know right?! If only someone would explain this to my wife……..
Stroke length is the reason i only have a mk1 and mk2 tx200, mk1 is still my favourite though. As much as you get used vto the anti bear trap very quickly ,its still better without one.
With one or two exceptions a Weihrauch is always a good purchase! I used to a have TX200 but had to sell it to pay a bill, miss it tremendously! The HW97 or HW77 are *almost* equal out of the box to a TX200.Tuned it's just a matter of preference.
Wish I could too😘💕👍👍
The 97k is the best choice because of it's unmatched quality, simplicity and accuracy. Add a vortex tune kit , polish everything inside , a good scope, a Diana recoiless scope mount and you'll have one of the absolute most accurate airguns money can buy . No pcp is more accurate than a tuned 97k , a few pcps are as accurate but not more accurate.
Don't know if there is a really cheap spring gun that actually groups well and has a reasonable build quality but it would be interesting to see a low cost build to see what magic you can perform on a budget. I appreciate the fine build quality of the gun you mentioned but for the total cost I would buy a pcp and have good accuracy and multiple shots for the same money out of the box 👍
Hw99s. I had a hw50 silver shadow grey import from Germany and I shot my first 60 in hft competition with it
HW97k will cost you £465.00 all in brand new, Not many pcp's cheaper than this plus the cost of a bottle etc...
Have to kind of agree with you on your comment, the quality of Weihrauch rifles have been proven to death on UA-cam, tell us something we didn't know ? would be better if you can show what you can achieve with say a sub £200 new rifle with your kits against the higher market guns. Yes we all know secondhand quality guns are available... why would you buy new in my view except for warranty ? dont want to upset the Weihrauch fan boys but there is life out there using other manufactures guns even 30+ years old
@@gecko278I am starting with the rifles I have. After that I will start looking for other “projects”😎
The cheapest weihrauch is hw30s, its really enjoyable to shoot, if you’re planning to hunt I’d consider the hw50s, it needs some refining from factory though, they’re overpowered and overgreased which causes them to diesel. I opened mine up from new, degreased it, put a tbt-kit in, cut a few coils from the spring and it’s a gem now:)
Love this weapon
Well prefer the 97😊❤👍🇬🇧
Enjoyed your site a lot. I've got a HW97 & am interested in your suggestions to strip it down, remove the original grease & oil etc & replace it. Could you put up on your site, your recommendations for the grease & oil replacements please. Thanking you again for a very informative site.
Go with the grease Nick sells on his site.
@@dullbrass Thanks, will do.
I will be making a video on that very soon
I've got a couple of hw97s they're good but my hw77s are even better you wont go wrong with either.
My mate is now waiting 11 months for his new 97 to arrive, he has a few shotguns and rifles, a keen foxer, he saw the HW97 and fell in love, but there are problems in Germany, and it still it hasn’t arrived yet, are you aware of any problems in EU, the dealers not forthcoming with info!
some great knowledge...................
To Nick:
If I may ask, who make the rings you installed and what is their height (medium or low)? I was looking to "downgrade" the scope in my hw77 (now a Airmax 4-16 x 50). Too much weight.
The next question is for everyone!
In your opinion, is there a need to install "dampa" style mount with a FAC gun? Or the Hawke optics, being well built, don't care about recoil?
I was thinking about a 2-7 x 32 or a 3-9 x 40.
Thanks in advance.
Sart0
I like it better than the TX200.
can we send our rifles to you for these kits to be fitted?
You can, but as you need to be able to do regular maintenance it might be worth trying to fit it yourself first
Short answer: no. Get a hw77, you have iron sights, rest is the same. 😊
Bonjour,
Cdt

What are your views on the hw57?
I haven’t owned one?!😱 I think the early ones had issues, but my customers seem to like theirs
@@tbtairrifletuning1520 Am I right in thinking that the HW57 doesn't have the Rekord adjustable 2 stage trigger? which would be a reason for me not to buy it, unless a replacement Rekord trigger could be fitted.
I've got the HW97 in black synthetic/nickle and can't find a fault with it, OK it had a bit of a twang but I cured that with a piston spring sleeve.
Greetings from Germany.
@Deleba333 the hw57 has the rekord trigger unit same as all the others
I know hw97 and tx200 always go head to head but what about the walther lgu, is that a contender??
The LGU is no longer in production, the others are.
No I shouldn't, I've got one :)
Get another one, no excuse! 😊
Buy a mk1 tx200 😘
More molybdenum Dosen't mean its better, this stuff is only 1 atom big and engineers have testet that, it can be even contra pruductive. They have told people that you can put even the powder on metal and rub it in and it will still work, becourse the stuff like to hold on on metal ect. Maybe the twing sound would be louder than with some grease in it. 🤔
And I would put some silicone grease on it too, becourse rust protection.
Never, EVER use silicone grease inside a springer! It will seize it solid!
I will be making a “How to Lubricate your springer” video soon👍
@@tbtairrifletuning1520 fun why are then many people suggesting it and doing it 🤔.
I don't have one, but I was looking in to it and I can't get one like the 97K with marine grade and thumbstock synthetic, that have also a traditional sight and a picatinny or so mounting, that the both sitgts could be used also a threaded end. 😔
Tx200 all the way never lost to a 97 yet , in any comp .knows running an77k for years
Would you consider giving me a donation for a man in a dark place,he suffers from depression anxiety and sciatica, his wife's in remission,he lost his home this year and his job due to illness,he needs a hobby to concentrate on , just to get some down time, and focus on something different,I pray 🙏 I don't come across cheeky,I've asked a few companies and have got some responses, some people think I'm cheeky and pushy ,but I'm just explaining the situation he is in ,I hope and pray you give this request some serious thought , thanks for reading and I hope to hear from you ,yours hopefully phil
one of the best springers, not the best air rifle
Now I’m confused? Springers are the best air rifles, so the best springer is the best of the best!😁
It don’t mean a thing if it ain’t got a spring!
How did you bore the centre out of yours to get it to the end of the barrel Nick?
The moderator and catch come apart, then I just put it on the lathe👍
Why dont Weirauch do the same gun with an Airsporter,or Webley mk 3 cocking and loading system ,,,instead of javing a lever hanging below the rifle ,just cock it ,return the lever and use a TAP loading system,,,thats the only reason i wont buy one of these rifles,,have the HW 35k and the HW 50s 125 anniversary, amd they are wonderful,,but for christ sake HW build one like the airsporter or webley did,,,no hanging cockin rods for christ sake ,rgds ,?
