Here's to the only living actor who actually attended the funeral of Hattie McDaniel. Class, integrity, and a fire in the belly that would never be quelched.
Well ... James Cagney passed away on Easter Sunday, 1986, Jose. You're right, though, about her funeral. Unrivalled class. - Cheers. - Stay well and safe! VCH & Midlantic Theatre Co., Newark, NJ, USA
@@virghammer1by “living,” Jose meant the only actor alive at the time of Hattie’s funeral. And when you think of the huge number of stars who were around in those days, that says a lot about Mr. Cagney.
Cagney as the captain in " Mr. Roberts " was grand! Orson Welles, a fan of Cagney, said, "...maybe the greatest actor who ever appeared in front of a camera. " I'd agree.
James Cagney is hands down, one of my favorite actors of all time. When I found out he was actually a song-and-dance man, as demonstrated by Yankee Doodle Dandy and several other movies/shows, it blew me away! The man had gravitas. He SOLD you on the idea that he was either plain rotten to the core, or a genuine hero. I can't remember the movie, but he spoke Yiddish, which had me laughing as I grew up around some Jewish folks. He was of a special breed.
One great actor in praise of another. George C. Scott's praise of James Cagney was/is well earned! James Cagney one of the greatest! One of the greatest of all time's.
An unbelievable human being who inspired Mikail Baryshnikov to become a ballet dancer, and waa a pallbearer at his funeral. Unbelievably intelligent and moral and incredibly spoke fluent Yiddish!
I grew up in the same town that Cagney lived in when he died (stanfordville) my grandfather used to work on his coolers lol. They named the road he lived on "James Cagney Way"
His performance as Cody Jarret in White Heat was absolutely mesmerizing, you just couldn't take your eyes off of him, almost rooting for the evil little bastard.
Me .. growing up during the 60's in NYC .... I got to see Cagney movies they showed on Channel 9 Program known as "The Million Dollar Movie" .. they showed the classics - this all pre-Turner Classic channel... oh yeah, the time when the only channels on TV were - 2(CBS) .. 4(NBC)..5 (I think at that time Fox) ..7(ABC) ... 9(WOR-TV) .. 11(WPIX) .. 13(PBS) ...41&47 Spanish channels .. that was it for channels unlike today lol ....
5 was WNEW into the 80's I believe. Million Dollar Movie was great, you could watch the same movie everyday for a week. First time I saw "Gone with the wind" I thought THEY stole the music from MDM ! Sure was great to be a kid in NY.
I simply do not have the words to convey how much I love, respect and admire this giant artist! He's a perfect example why I don't care for most actors today. Who could possibly top him? Though he often played a bad guy, when his humanity comes through, he can melt the hardest of hearts! As long as film endures, he will be loved and remembered fondly, always!
Beautifully put, Cheryl! Any words I can say - and I've said plenty! (lol) are completely inadequate, too. "They" utterly broke the mold w/ him, eh? The Best of best.
James Cagney - the BEST. George C. Scott, no slouch either. -- Ahhhhh, but Cagney ... Well, all: We've had giants among us ... Thanks, JC and thanks, GSC! You gave us all So much.
Before the G.I. Bill was initiated, James Cagney was the only source of support and encouragement to the young soldier who returned from the WWII and was responsible for getting him into movies. That was Audie Murphy, the most decorated American soldier in American history.
I'm a girl and watched all his movies as a kid/young adult. Sometimes I act just like him in his movies! and also live in solitude. LOL Can't help it. He's one of the few role models I looked up to.
U & me both, sister. My nickname was “Cagney” growing up, everyone knew how I adored him = my idol. Never could find a man like him. I always feared that when he died I’d cry my heart out forever -but when he passed in ‘86 my son had just been born, which saved my heart from breaking into a million pieces. I recall ppl gathered outside a NYC church when his coffin was brought down its steps, how they applauded. Wish I could’ve made it there that day to say goodbye. Am also a loner & never did, or will, find my James Cagney. But if I’m very lucky, I might see him past the pearly gates one day down the road...
I will admit, when I first got in classic movies I resisted Cagney movies for some reason. Idk why, but then I saw Yankee Doodle, White Heat and One Two Three all in the span of a month. And I couldn’t believe how good he was. Amazing
Always loved his movies and acting. I used to work at a restaurant that he would frequent in upstate Ny near his home. He never came in while I was working. I so wanted to meet him.
RIP James Cagney (July 17, 1899 - March 30, 1986), aged 86 And RIP George C. Scott (October 18, 1927 - September 22, 1999), aged 71 You both will be remembered as legends
2:53) Take a close look at Cagney's face especially his eyes. I bet that's where Stanley Kubrick got the idea for the Clockwork Orange poster, Malcolm McDowell's facial expression.
1949 White Heat was Cagney's last bad guy picture. His last movie years was reaping the admiration and respect of playing the choice Good Guy roles he deserved. In Mr. Roberts Cagney's nemesis, contankerous character was as far as he went bad guy. His 1959 movie about Admiral Halsey was brilliant.
here is some TRUE...trivia regarding White Heat......during the scene he has the breakdown after learning his mother was dead....he was so convincing that many of the extras having not been told what the scene was about actually believed Cagney was having a real breakdown.... i loved JAMES CAGNEY growing up...he reminded me of someone in my family
I’m shocked that the words recited by Scott at the beginning - “wholly human,” etc. - were written for a man like Robert E. Lee. Massive kudos to Scott for finally speaking those words to a man who actually deserved them.
James Cagney was, in my youth, categorized as the “gangster type”-implying that it was easy. Watch him say goodbye to his dad in Yankee Doodle Dandy” or being a jerk to Doris Day in “Love Me Or Leave Me.” Then renew your opinion!
Both were adopted. This was before commercial DNA testing might have helped them understand their origins, contact biological relations and put their adopted lives into perspective. His adopted son James Jr. died prematurely from a heart attack in his forties two years before Cagney's death, so had he lived longer they might have reconciled. His daughter Casey married an employee on her father's New York estate but they divorced in 1981, so that may have complicated their relationship. She raised two daughters, born in the 1960s, that grew up in California so they probably did not have much contact with James Cagney, Sr. since they were 3,000 miles apart. Casey died from cancer in her sixties, twenty-two years after her adopted brother.
I agree. Honoring Robert E. Lee? He and the others from the South and who fought for the Confederacy were guilty of treason against the United States. They violated the very Constitution that so many Southerners claim to respect, honor and would die for. What country in the history of our planet honors treasonous members of the enemy's army by erecting and maintaining statues and monuments to the very people responsible for the deaths of 600,000 citizens? (in Robert E. Lee's case he and his fellow treasonous monsters wete responsible for the deaths of 600,000 Americans). Hey, let's erect statues and monuments him and his Confederate traitors.
My first thought. Attempting to honor the man who was responsible for the deaths of the most American soldiers in history... And using James Cagney to do it? I'm sure Cagney would not have approved.
Boy do we need more men like him in the world

I grew up on James Cagney movies. When he was on the screen, no one talked. He was one of a kind.
The greatest actor of all time. Comedy/drama/dancing, anything.
And he was real. A patriot, an honest man, no bigotry, just a good man.

He definitely did see that movie in that shot shoot out to him

No mention of his acting talent in the ending of Angels with Dirty faces is blasphemy.

Watch Cagney’s AFI acceptance speech it shows the mark of the man.

Cuando llega TCM USA a Latinoamerica, porque el actual TCMLA es muy mala su programacion
Sorry to heat that, sir - hope they change that!
He was also an amateur boxer.
That explains his toughness
Who did it,who did it, this is an outrage.
Both his grown children were estranged from him at his death ..
So ?
And that could well be *their* fault, not his.
