I am reading Paul Huson’s Mystical Origins (on your recommendation) and it is really fantastic. My first book was Seventy Eight Degrees and, while I didn’t have too much trouble with getting through it, my main take away was to really look at the symbolism in the cards (RWS or any other deck). That launched a bit of an investigation into symbolism in the Occult and Art, which I am still enjoying. I have a variety of decks, including those with their own system like the Mary El, and what I love about them is the perspective that different artists bring to their work. How I choose to read these cards is up to me. Thanks for another interesting video!
I recently discovered your channel and immediately binge watched your book review videos and subbed. I am curious whether you’ve read or maybe reviewed Benebell Wen’s book called Holistic Tarot. If you haven’t, I would LOVE to see a review some day. After I got the book, it crossed the threshold of overcomplicated and jumped into the realm of wtf for me - I don’t know how else to quantify my reaction. I believe she is an attorney by profession but for the life of me, this is a book that convinced me I can understand quantum physics faster than tarot. Or understand nothing at all, because I just don’t get the purpose or the message or what it does or says about tarot at all. I don’t know what school of thought informed her work or how her approach is holistic. I hope you check it out and make a review video. I maybe so uninformed and missing something 😅

I just found your channel and love it. There is a condensed version of the 78 book RP put out in 2021. The New Tartot Handbook. It’s a basic description of the cards without too much extra. I really liked what you said in the last minute or two. Your philosophy is refreshing.
Wow! 🤯 You always make me think! 🤔 I love Rachel Pollack. 😃 Her books I would NOT read from cover to cover. Especially Seventy Eight Degrees of Wisdom because it is rather heady to read. Most tarotists I know use her book more for reference. Something to dip in an out of if you want to know what somebody said back when. I agree with you that playing cards are older than tarot. I also agree that it’s problematic all the overlay of esotericism, numerology and astrology on the cards. It’s just a bit too much. I just read the cards as I see them, period, end of story. Thoroughly enjoying your channel!

As to your statement about finding a sort of holy grail to reading the cards, when I began reading, I would always be on the lookout for another, different deck, the right one, the one that would finally lead me to understanding. It took me a while to realize the answer to reading the cards 'better' wasn't rooted in anything external. I do wonder if the multitude of videos from readers who collect decks reinforce this idea for new readers without meaning to do so. I am lucky in that I began before UA-cam. My tarot book was Anthony Louis, Tarot Plain and Simple. It is just that. A bit of background, definitions, suggestions for how to learn, and a few spreads. Rachel Pollack came later, and as someone who majored in literature, I found it a bit dense and all over the place, and generally not useful to my goal of becoming a better reader. Someone suggested that it is useful for an occasional consult, which I agree. I also agree that it is overly complicated. Just love your channel, really resinate with your thoughts, very much enjoy hearing a bit more intellectual discussion of Tarot. Keep it up!

I found History of Tarot by Farley to be very good reading. I am also using Bunting, but that's just Tarot for Beginners, but the Farley book is so nice. I wonder what you think of Benebell Wen's book and tarot? Or did I miss that video (I am new). I feel like a warning for readers if any author says "I've read a lot of scholarly books", which means, what? Who recognizes that? I also feel her Tarot is an attempt at some grand unifying theory. Like Bahai tarot. Every time I think of Berlin, I think of Wings of Desire. I don't know why.

OK, what I love and hate about UA-cam is how random the algorithm is. How have you never turned up in my feed before. I LOVE what you said about esotericism and religion on the one hand and paganism on the other. Absolutely , the former are "fear of death" ideologies that have crippled and controlled us for centuries. According to the Spiritualists, people reported being pretty fine after death. I think "paganism" whatever that may be, is about connecting with, valuing, enjoying, loving our lives not worrying about what is going to happen thereafter. I also love that you are essentially calling out the elitism of many Tarot ideologies. I avoided the Tarot for years because I just thought it was way to "high falutin." I just could not get all that complicated Kabbalistic numerological stuff memorized. And when people told me to just "go with my gut" I thought they were just being lazy. No! They were being historically correct, as it turns out. Thank you so much. I am subscribing immediately. (Love the hair, BTW. And I dislike Jung, the Nazi sympathizer who sexual abused his patients. Architypes be damned! Often sexist anyway. Yuk!)

I thought you might like it because it basically says, you can use these complicated numerological, kabbalistic etc. systems if that floats your boat, but you can use a lot of other ways as well. I myself like the "story approach." That is, what story does this card seem to be telling right now and in conjunction with the other cards. But then, I'm Irish and we like our stories. If you haven't already seen it, you might check it out.
Huson started writing the later book as a kind of update of the earlier one, but the project took a different turn, and the result is that the two books are very different, and both are well worth reading.

I was thinking of Benebell also. I also have her Tarot deck and its companion book, The Books of Maps. I have yet to sit down to properly read it.
