Hi Robert, I'm late on commenting this video, but I found your channel because I am on that same quest : finding the "perfect" Marseille-Waite deck ! I love your reviews (real reviewers are hard to find on YT these days) and I really enjoyed this one. I know the deck because one of my friends owns it, but I agree with you : the faces look strange, the colors are too muted and depressing for my taste, I don't like the fake mediaval style either. I just want to add something about Emmanuelle Iger : this is a project she has had for years before it was produced, she's quite famous in France in the tarot community because for years, she was one of the very few authors teaching about RWS (Marseille tradition was still the dominant one, even 5 years ago) and a lot of french people learnt their RWS with her books (I'm one of them). I'm just giving you a little more context around the fact that only her name appears on the book. The french audience wants to know that it's a book written by her, and no one else. I'm sure it's not mean and that she is very aware about artists needing to be fully credited as well. I hope this makes sense. This comment is getting long but I have a question around the same topic : do you know the Deck of the Bastard (self-published by Seven Star) ? It's a mix between Etteila for the majors, RWS for the minors, and other historical sources I guess (court cards are not RWS). It sounds strange but it seems to work fine, I saw some good reviews (Benebell Wen has one on her blog). I would love to hear your point of view !

And the book is great because everybody can decide from this book the direction they want to go or they don't want to go (in research). For me it cached fire. While I appreciate an honest review , this just compares it to your personal preferences for RWS , not a review of the deck on it's own iconography . I usually loathe busy decks and empathize how distracting they can be . This is a more detailed Style consistent with Art Nouveau - check out Spirit Keeper's Tarot for a truly busy deck with way too much detail and poor use of colour. Oh No! I'm sorry you felt led astray by my recommendation of Tobias Churton. He is a scholar so his style may not be for everyone, but he is objective, I do still hold to my main recommendation of Lon Milo DuQuette's book Understanding Aleister Crowley's Thoth Tarot. His style is very entertaining and engaging and it gives an excellent introduction to Qabalah/Kabbalah and Golden Dawn ideas. The RWS deck is also based on this framework with some differences, it is just the symbols are more overt and layered in the Thoth deck. I hope you get the Beetlejuice gig, you wear this makeup well :)

I've found your videos on books really helpful and they led me to some wonderful reads. In particular - Paul Huson's Mystical Origins of the Tarot, Ronald Decker's the Esoteric Tarot and Anthony Louis' Tarot Beyond the Basics. The only Thoth Tarot book I've actually enjoyed reading is Angeles Arrien's The Tarot Handbook which she wrote because she read Crowley's book on Thoth and "decided that its esotericism in meaning hindered , rather than enhanced" the use of Lady Harris' artwork! She interprets the cards from "a cross-cultural perspective and universal view, honouring their visual execution". I'm finding it an easy way into understanding the Thoth. It feels like a book with a lot less Swords energy!

I really like your grounded critique of Pavlov's deck. I remember the hype and agiotage around this deck. I bought the one from Etsy from the artist himself only at 3rd attempt a while ago, long before it was printed by US Games. Mine is printed in Taiwan and of rather good quality. I was happy to have scored it back in the day as I really like the style of his art. His artistic erotic style is rather beautiful. I was very enthusiastic about this deck. However, at the end I was rather disappointed in the sense that I couldn’t work with it at all. As an RWS fan I always need to have the classical canons respected in any Tarot deck which claims to be derived from RWS. You know which card killed the deck for me completely? The Knight of Pentacles. Pavlov got it completely wrong. How on earth do you come up with an idea of a wheel-chaired knight of Pentacles!? It is a total abomination in my view. Yes, he is not as fast as Knight of Swords or Knight of Wands, but definitely not disabled, just cautious and contemplative about his next move. But you go much deeper and more detailed at the flaws of the deck. Again, another deck which is totally beautifully made and totally a masterpiece in the artistic sense, but a total waste as a Tarot instrument.

Snuggling up in bed with a family bible! :-) Oh Robert! BTW, you look gorgeous today! And I realise that, as I said today, it's been 7 days since you posted this video. Alas, I am watching this video with considerable delay, as I've just started another training in Astrology. So I am late for a very important date, one might say. Turning to the video, I must admit that I am not a fan of Alchemy. I am also not interested in Kabbalah all that much and many other disciplines around Tarot. And to be absolutely honest, just handling Astrology, Numerology, and Tarot is plenty, with attempts to add Marseille and Toth later down the line. I also couldn't figure out what those elephants balancing on the cups meant! They certainly drew my attention though, to the point that I forgot the meaning of the original RWS card! :-) I don't think I would appreciate this during the actual reading with the client, when one is already somewhat stressed out.

Me, too. For years I’ve seen the cover in catalogs or online, but had no idea it was so “parts” heavy. 🤣
