My favorite part of this video is the fact that they are describing the 90s movie and not the actual book. The captain dies during the crash at the very beginning and the beast is a soldier who dies during an aircraft attack in the air while they slept.
i hate the way this book is taught in english classes because it’s always framed as, “this is what would happen if all of you were stuck on a deserted island” and then the teacher leaves the room and waits for it to develop into full anarchy and it literally never does because the book is SATIRE!! and nobody understands that!! there’s also a huge time skip, and it actually takes the boys several months to actually commit a single act of intentional violence. when they do turn on each other, it’s because there’s a war happening, a pilot’s corpse crash lands on the island post-dogfight, and the children mistake the parachute for a monster and spiral into paranoia. this book is really about imperialistic, mind-poisoned children inheriting the legacy and trauma of violence from the adults waging war around them!!
Also I am pretty sure there was a survival story out there where a literal similar situation happen there were boys who survived in a deserted island and you know what they survived and didn't attack each other they worked in harmony!
@@socialfreak2 they mention that at the end of the video! it was six tongan boys who were stranded for 15 months. they all survived, and i'm pretty sure the biggest injury that happened to any of them was a broken leg.
@@TheCulinaryCompanion yes, the lesson of generational trauma and violence. but english teachers never focus on that part and instead point and go "haha look this book proves humanity is inherently evil"
I love the line, “If you had a fire, we could come rescue you, but the law of the sea says I don’t have to.” The “don’t have to” took me tf out. Like they can but won’t cuz they just can’t be bothered 😂

I’m so excited! I love this cast, and I’m sure this is going to be an amazing podcast. I’m glad Julia is here since she wasn’t able to come to a lot of the livestreams.
only 3 min in and I'm fnking crying bc this is so funny. grace being the only one with the accent and then the silent laughing and finger-pointing at each other, all of it kills me.
Omg guys this is such a great idea for a podcast! Especially since you’re all improv students and can tell a great story, but at the same time it’s entertaining interspersed with real cliff notes lmao. And I also enjoyed the recap and analysis and quick discussion at the end. Really good way to engage with classic lit!
I was scrolling through UA-cam shorts and then I remembered seeing the trailer yesterday and immediately go to your channel to watch this, I went outside and sat in a chair listening to this wreck of a video but man this video was amazing.
Im honestly impressed that this is actually funny and entertaining. Most of the time when short form content creators try long form content it just doenst have the same feel
Congrats on your first podcast episode!! Can't wait to see future ones ❤your guys' content is always so imaginative and funny. By far one of the most entertaining channels on yt currently
The "Survivor" reference is amazing. As a "Survivor" superfan, some little-known-trivia is that "Survivor" was inspired by the Swedish show "Expedition Robinson" which itself was inspired by...LORD OF THE FLIES! There's even a direct reference to this connection in Season 8 (Survivor: All-Stars) by the host, Jeff Probst.
I did a sick final project on this book sophomore year of hs lmaooo. I painted the different forms the "beast" takes throughout the book on a bunch of nesting dolls ending w the kids themselves (I think, cant really remember what I even wrote lmao). Teacher never gave it back to me 💀
This book traumatized me. I was in eighth grade and had no idea about the subtext, just the horrific death :(( Thanks for simultaneously reopening a childhood wound, and putting comedic Neosporin on it!
y'all I had to stop watching this at work and finish it once I got off because I kept cackling like a crazy person. Grace is too frickin funny xD love the recap at the end with a reflection on themes and real world events
If I had a nickel for every improv sketch comedy group with a podcast that releases on Thursdays in which they play characters proposed by each other, I'd have two nickels. Which isn't a lot but its weird that there's two. (Almost Friday Pod with Will Angus and Liam Cullaugh)
The end commentary about humans devolving into anarchy is one of the main arguments between Hobbes and Locke. My Poly Sci professor briefly went over it when discussing the human condition and government. I think it's so cool that Hobbes beliefs are portrayed in Lord of the Flies, but in real life, Locke is proved right (in this one instance) with the plane crash in 1965 with the Tongan boys.
Four decades after writing his debut novel Lord of the Flies, Golding published an article called "Why Boys Become Vicious." It's a short but very thought-provoking read; do check it out! It largely complements Lord of the Flies and clarifies his intentions with the novel quite a bit.
i'm not american but after watching this i feel as though i am both american and high
Me too and school also
LOL HAHAHAHA
hahaha
I’m CACKLING! This is great!
Lmfao gud line brother🤣🤣
“Welcome back to we didn’t read it!”
Considering this is episode one, this is an iconic line.
I caught that too, it's the only time that intro won't make sense
“Because being fat and gay is the worst thing you can do when your 12”
I know Piggy is often seen as Ralf's sidekick but I always saw him as the main character
Im fat and gay

Just shows they haven't read it (like the title says) 😂😂😂
I’m sure Golding would have rewrote it had he watched the movie.
Oh I was questioning that thanks lolll
@@HeathCottengim . . . He really wouldn't have. The point of the book was a parody of British school boys if they were left without adults.
Thank you I was so confused!!
Julia having to head to class at the end is so on brand for Julia. All the live streams start with “Julia’s not here because she’s at class”
Hyde's "no you're not" in response to Piggy being a forward in soccer sent me into hysterics
