The upper got completly destroyed much quicker than the sole, my best was 3 months and my last pair only ONE month, they got completly torn and NOT from any outside factor. Like a self destructible material, never seen in any shoe, while, suprisingly enough, the upper in the Mont Blanc, which looks pretty weak, but the appearance deceives, is still holding up after one year, a record for any Altra running shoe.
I’m super stoked that the Timp is ditching those silly drain holes that let in too much dust and caused blisters and has upgraded to Vibram Megagrip. This will not only make it competitive (dare I say canabalistic ) against the Lone Peak but the Topo Athletic Pursuit too. The Hoka Speed Goat is really a totally different shoe IMO. For me the stack height and last on the Timp is a great balance of cushion and protection while still feeling reasonably nimble. I can’t wait to try them out. They will likely replace my current Olympus. We will see.
Timp is one of the few Altra models I have never tried. I've tried one Lone peak...can't recall if it's the 4 or 5 but I enjoyed it. Favorite trail model remains the Superior. Nothing fancy but super comfortable and always gets the job done for me.
timp and sup are not cool names. outroad neither. mb is too posh. olympus is still olympus. but since they do wack on the via and flow anyways, paradigm trail would have been the real deal lmfao. vanish seem like a lost cause down for race nerds.
I have a few runs in the Timp 5 and it is awesome. I have run in every iteration of Timp and this is far and away the best. I have a few runs in the speedgoat 5 but it was to narrow in the forefoot. Lone peak is ok but Timp 5 takes the crown.
Spot on review.- I picked up a pair of Timp 5 this afternoon and ran 6 miles in them right out of the box, and I already know I won’t use my Hoka speedgoats anymore. I love the fit, the grippy vibram soles, and all around comfy cushioned feel.
I may be a bit weird but I really loved the Timp 1. I completed my first 100K in the shoe and had zero issues on the very tough rugged course so that may be why. I have owned all the variations of Timp and I have liked all of them but the OG Timps were the best.
I have the Timp 3 and I love them except for the lack of sharp rock protection. The trails in my area are rocky and I definitely feel the sharp ones through the Timp. Definitely the Vibram outsole should help with that, but one of the great things about Altras is the ability of almost curl your foot around obstacles which I think increases grip and confidence naturally. I hear that the stiffer Vibram sole takes away from this. So I’d like try both but I may move to the Lone Peaks. Altra Original footshape for life!
Great review and thanks! I like the lower stack height and wider fit of the Lone Peak, but having used Vibram Megagrip (on my sandals) it's so damn impressive it's really hard to settle for less. IMO Altra need to upgrade any future version of the Lone Peak to Vibram and be done with it. People who will put up with grip half as good just to save $10 or so aren't really serious anyway. They may be worried about losing sales but I think it would be the opposite.
We agree that Altra needs to update the Lone Peak to have the Vibram outsole. One of our biggest complaints with the Lone Peak is that it's not grippy enough for technical trails.
Timp to me is the Superior big brother. Fitment, ground feel are nearly the same to my normal feet. But if you run on muddy, rain, river crossing and those not so forgiving trail, LP all the way.
I bought the Timp 5s and love them. Altras have always fit my feet the best but the Loan Peaks just don't fit my feet as well .. I own several models of Altra and I would say that the Loan Peaks fit the least well, particularly in the toe box .. for some reason my foot just swims in the Loan Peaks but not in the Timps. The updates to the Timp is much needed and make the extra $$$ worth it.
My Timp 4’s uppers tore terribly early on to the point I had to Gear Aid and Shoe Goo them to keep them together. I loved the look, fit and comfort of them but they just didn’t hold up long enough. Altra honored their guarantee and sent me the identical shoe which I am using gingerly. That said, I’m looking forward to the Timp 5s to see if all the negative feedback forced Altra to improve the product.
I have to Lone Peak 6 (I believe) and the Timp 4. I like the Lone Peak for general use, running in the snow and on the trails. However, I don't care for the way it performs on more technical trails, I think due to the width. Even though I have a wider forefoot, it's almost too much. This is where the Timps come in. I do like these quite a bit. While I don't gravitate towards high-stack shoes, these have been great so far, especially for the way they take on more technical terrain (nothing crazy, just rocky, rooty trails). I feel like the outsole grabs a bit better on the Timps and the slightly stiffer outsole is more protective. Seeing that the 5 has a Vibram outsole is great and I look forward to trying them. Thanks for the great vids!
Very valuable insights, many thanks! I have TIMP 4 and Olympus 5, will continue with both the (upgraded) models - TIMP as an all-around shoe, Olympus for the trail ultras.
Regarding width, last year I tried on the Timp 4 and the Mont Blanc. The Mont Blanc was just a bit wider and more comfortable. It was such a great shoe. I hope the Timp 5 meets or exceeds it while being just a bit wider.
Love these reviews! Do you have any tips for bunion feet? The topo athletic and Specter have the width at the wrong point (end of the foot not where a bunion peeks out;) . Adidas boston fits well bit is a fast shoe, looking for a more slow run shoe with width at the right place. Any ideas?
I wish Altra would make their shoes in multiple fits. The Timps just don't work for my feet at the standard fit. I'd also appreciate the additional 4mm of cushioning.
@jimjurek7911 the olympus has more cushioning than I prefer. I like the ground feel of Altra LPs but for thru hiking it's not enough. I also think the new timps will get much better traction.
We agree that there should be more Original Foot Shape options. We have a lot of people on both sides of the spectrum. Some of them want more Original fit options, whereas some want more Slim fit models.
I have the Mont Blanc, love it. Great for races…but the sole wears too quickly. Would the Lone Peak be a good option for training and a bit of leisure use?
Glad to hear you love the Mont Blanc. The Lone Peak would be a perfect option for training and leisure. The Lone Peak is Altra's most popular trail running/hiking shoe. It is perfect for both slower training paces and casual wear.
I want to try the Timp.. but here in Brazil we dont have Altra. So I cant try on before bying. I have to choose one and send to Brazil. I only use Altra because of my wide feet. I Just love LP. Dont know If It worth trying another model
I love the timps and only thing missing imo was the crip! So exited to try it ! Altra need to stop giving all the nice colors to the ladies. Men have feelings to 😂
I abused the snot out of my Timp 3.5s and still going. I feel its so comfortable for my foot, fits me like a glove. Is the Lone Peak 8 more comfier? Should I try the speedgoat?
I have had 3 pairs of Lone Peak, I like the wide tobox, and I have many kilometers in them, as I do alot of extreme-marc, such as Mammut-march. Next year I have a march for 100km, only on tarmac….which would you recomend?
The previous timp was crazy narrow and not their standard fit at all. I also wear the provision which is standard fit and it fits me fine. But I couldn't even keep the timp 4 on before it was uncomfortable. So is the timp 5 a true standard fit like the provision?
I actually find the superior to be wider than the lone peak. Do you consider the timp to be actually narrower than the lone peak? If it is then I unfortunately can’t get away with using that narrow of a shoe. The Topo Pursuit seems to be my useable option at the moment.
The Timp 5 sounds promising! I had to return the last model after the outsole was showing wear even after 10 miles. Vibram megagrip, plus it being lighter than the lone peak, make it an enticing choice
Yeah.....I commented saying basically the same thing. Horrible materials. I don't know how so many people wear these shoes. They're garbage! I run ultras and trail run in CO so idk maybe they're just not designed for lots of varied terrain. Which is ironic since they're a trail shoe company first.
@@lyrilljacksonI'll have to look that up. I always thought they were trail first with their burgundy Lone Peak 1 with the stupid heel tab that caused me to eat shit multiple times in one week.

Does the Timp 5 have the same heel as the Timp 4? The Timp 4 has some kind of wierd inlay on the heel that should keep the heel locked. But it is bad and make the heel slip. So how does the heel compare?
Nope, different heel cup. The old Timp's heel was almost like a baby Olympus but this heel is closer to the Lone Peak's heel. It's lower and a little flatter compared to the Timp 4.
I really wanted to like the Timp and the Outroad for less technical trail running but the Topo MTN Racer was so obviously more comfortable and durable just based on trying them on… good that Altra recognized that. Definitely appears to be aimed at the Speedgoat.
The cushion and outsole are much improved on the Timp 5. The width on the 5 is slightly narrower. However, we haven't had too many complaints, if any at all, about the width.
I think the lone peak 8 is the style of the 7 with the feel of the 6. Not sure why they ever moved away from the 6 to be honest, but the 8 seems like a step in the right direction, but still not quite as jaw dropping as the 6 was.
Unfortunately, it is too early for us to say anything about the durability of the Timp 5. However, because the Vibram outsole is molded into the midsole foam, we have reason to believe that the outsole will stay on significantly better than some of Altra's previous models.
I used the LP5. Midsole was ok, but i will never ever run with maxtrac rubber. Every other compound wins (except nike). Even the Puma rubber for street shoes is better. So its nice that they bring the vibram to more models.
I truly can't stand altra's ego max formulation. Not sure what they did, but it is so incredibly mushy. I just got a pair of torin 7s and I can say that they probably will be relegated to walking only as I just sink into them, and as a very light runner I don't like the feeling. Is the timp 5 very similar in feel to the torin 7 in terms of midsole?
I think the sizing is more close to true compared to the last version. We have had to size people up a half pretty frequently in the Timp 4 but I think this one will be closer to true.
Altra categorizes all of their shoes into 3 fits based on the amount of room in the toe box. Slim fit is the most narrow Altra fit, but still offers more toebox room than most standard shoes from other brands. The original fit is their widest fit in terms of toe box room. Standard would fall right in the middle, and a majority of their shoes fall into this category. We have a great video that goes into more depth here: ua-cam.com/video/LFwQg6Qwle4/v-deo.html
Oh boy, now I’m torn. I love my LPs since switching up from Superior 3.5 and never thought I’d get the Timp. But after watching this….. 🤔 Great video as always, Steve❤
Please assess the ankle roll counter measures to each shoe. This is an underrated metric that needs to be highlighted in trail running shoes (coming from a person that broke an ankle in the trails because of a poor designed shoe)
The Timp 5 doesn't have any support to it that helps prevent ankle rolling. The Lone Peak has a plastic heel cup that sits above the midsole to help prevent your ankle from turning. The lower stack height also makes it inherently more stable.
I can bet anything that the upper in the Timp 5 is not much better than the one in the Timp 4, meaning you'll get a maximum or 4 months before the shoes become unusable and completly torn
Even wearing nothing but Altra shoes for over 5 years and have loved them. Too bad the quality control has gone down the tubes. The last three pair I have worn have tread delaminating after only a month or so and those were my work “only in my optometry office” shoes. Not running or trail walking or hiking. Carpet in the office shoes. What a shame
We love Altra as a brand too! The quality control on some of their more recent models has gotten better, but we agree that it still has room for improvement.
if ur really splitting hair the miniuate diff of the lugs on tp5 mb1 and mb2 and oly6(5 was zzz and i'm a pleb that never used 1-4 gens of any altra trail equiv timeframe) make a huge diff paired with everything else. since i already have tp5 half a yr ago + and they be spamming too much mid(no pun fr) variations for the gen for me to begin to utilize or afford, tp6
They both lose IMO. I've never burned through so many pairs of shoes ever in a couple different seasons, or had to take such egregious advantage of a return/exchange policy, as I did with Altra and their absolutely horrible shoe build. 3 pair of Timp in one summer. 4 pair of Lone Peak in another summer. I tried on and off since this company launched and they have gotten so bad ever since they sold. Sorry i don't have a beaming compliment to share but i think this company has been cranking out awful shoes at shamelessly high price points for something that is completely sub par.
these are not good colors, way to corporately mid and sipid. vf be shoving tnf and earlier tbl cheap collabs down ib's throat and altra shoe cameos down every next product as well. yikes. tell dicaprio to buy the brand that makes his favorite shoe lonepeak 5 milred already. or stop making highstack fashion shoes for loui XIV kids. the military tossing salomon after decades also doesn't help or relate to me much. does altra sponsor the army now already since 2023?
Thanks for all the Altra reviews you do. As someone who only runs in Altras I'm grateful for your videos
Thank you so much, your support and kind words mean a lot!
I liked the Timp 4 but the outsole wore down real quick. I’m glad they put on Vibram and reduced the weight.

Thanks for this video! I’ve been a Salomon guy for a while but have been planning on trying Altras this year, and these are the two I’m looking at
Thanks for watching. Altra is a fantastic choice for an alternative trail running shoe brand!

The new Timp 5 is certainly a wonderful shoe, we hope they release more fun colors in the future!
Hey there, would you recommend the Altra Timp 5 for hiking, as well?
I abused the snot out of my Timp 3.5s and still going. I feel its so comfortable for my foot, fits me like a glove. Is the Lone Peak 8 more comfier? Should I try the speedgoat?

¿Tallan igual las Lone Peak 8 y las Timp 5? Probé unas Timp 4 y me parecieron pequeñas en la misma talla.
Which would you personally recommend. Timp 5 or Speedgoat 6?

The timps are way more narrow, so if you like the width of the lone peak try the Olympus over timps.

erm
How is the midfoot of the Timp 5? I find the Altra standard fit is just too narrow in the midfoot for me compared to the lone peak reg/wide.
The midfoot width is pretty similar from the Timp 4. The toe box feels more roomy to me but the midfoot feels about the same.
I usually wear the timp as my hang out shoe because since 1 5 or 2.0 they went from original shape .....bring it back altra!
wasn't such a concept
Timp has always been on the same performance last.
I wish they also made the original with size. ( room for my pinky toe)
Other ppl say timp 5 is more narrow than 4....however seems Steeve always happy with newer versons😅😊
The cushion and outsole are much improved on the Timp 5. The width on the 5 is slightly narrower. However, we haven't had too many complaints, if any at all, about the width.
Why not Vibram when walking? Just curious.
I like the Timp more. It’s more comfortable. If I still lived by real trails I’d try the Topo Mountain Racer.

what's the difference between a 'standard fit' and an 'original fit'
Altra categorizes all of their shoes into 3 fits based on the amount of room in the toe box. Slim fit is the most narrow Altra fit, but still offers more toebox room than most standard shoes from other brands. The original fit is their widest fit in terms of toe box room.
Timp would be perfect if it came in wide like the Torin.
well no. it's just as narrow in midfoot.
Unless the Timp ever comes in wide, it will always be the Lone Peak
if ur really splitting hair the miniuate diff of the lugs on tp5 mb1 and mb2 and oly6(5 was zzz and i'm a pleb that never used 1-4 gens of any altra trail equiv timeframe) make a huge diff paired with everything else. since i already have tp5 half a yr ago + and they be spamming too much mid(no pun fr) variations for the gen for me to begin to utilize or afford, tp6
Sorry i don't have a beaming compliment to share but i think this company has been cranking out awful shoes at shamelessly high price points for something that is completely sub par.
what battle, Lone Peak is shit compared to the Timp.😂😂😂😂
these are not good colors, way to corporately mid and sipid. vf be shoving tnf and earlier tbl cheap collabs down ib's throat and altra shoe cameos down every next product as well. yikes. tell dicaprio to buy the brand that makes his favorite shoe lonepeak 5 milred already. or stop making highstack fashion shoes for loui XIV kids.
the military tossing salomon after decades also doesn't help or relate to me much. does altra sponsor the army now already since 2023?
