Rudolph Valentino's Voice

  • A documentary style educational video in which I try to recreate or imagine Rudolph Valentino's speaking voice using interviews with his brother Alberto and nephew Jean, and his songs as a reference point. The dialogue I have created is very short; it was both a challenging and fun project. I have also used a snippet of Kashmiri Love Song and the documentary is underscored with Shostakovich - Piano Concerto No. 2: II. Andante

There is a voice demo on UA-cam. He's reciting a poem. It's Chrystal clear, and he had a beautiful voice. I think the powers that be saw talkies coming and, thank goodness, recorded a demo. He would have been a bigger phenomenon, if that was possible.

@@amywalker3684 I'm not too sure he would have been bigger because there were other stars coming in that became greater at the field only because they were better actors. It's hard to say how it would have translated. I didn't think his voice was that deep but rather average. He would have done okay with the talkies for sure. Remember though this is when some of the most famous guys in history were coming around. Gary cooper, Clark Gable, Spencer Tracy and these people seem to have more skills at acting. It's just really hard to tell. We can go by Charlie Chaplin as an example . Charlie Chaplin of course was a comic character but nonetheless, when Talkies came out, she wasn't nearly as popular as before. Charlie Chaplin was an absolute genius at direction, production, acting and going to sick he started his own studio with a couple people back in the days when that was crazy to start a studio and try to go against the major ones. United artist. You may have or had not heard of that before but I am pretty sure when you're watching some movie at home in the future, you'll notice the name now that I've tossed it out to you. If you already knew about the story then you understand just how big Charlie Chaplin was. It carried over into talking movies but his Fame diminished because there was much more competition with other multiple types of movies. He was never at the bottom of the heap of course. Rudolph Valentino would have faced more competition with pouring in of actors and actresses from practically everywhere once silent films dissipated. I think when the talking movies came out that this is really when the so-called Golden age began. Generally I've heard actors and actresses and others speak about the Golden age of Hollywood being from 1940 to 1970. It always sounded a little crazy to me because I never would have thought of the '60s being considered part of the golden age

My grandmother saw Rudolph Valentino when he and a dancing partner travelled in a show. I think he was low on funds and needed to go on the road for a time. My grandmother said she had the chance to see him in Lowell, Massachusetts at one of theaters in the downtown of Lowell, Massachusetts. She said Rudolph Valentino was as handsome in person as he was in the movies. When he collapsed in Manhattan, he was with friends and his top hat fell off. One of them kept it until the 1950s when it was thrown out and the guy who trashed it, regretted it by the time he was interviewed for a book around 1966.

Where did that snippet of Valentino's voice come from? I wonder. Can't the recordings of songs he did be digitally enhanced and perfected, somewhat, to be more sonically correct and deemphasize or eliminate those annoying castanets in one song? Why no one has conceived of this idea is amazing. ✌♐

I notice watching his films that all the other actors are good but it’s what you expect from the silent films but with Rudolf he’s extremely natural even beyond today’s standard. And there’s a gentleness about him that over shines all of the Hollywood greats. The women were feinting because of the talent that he displayed and the gentle spirit that he was and is. He made them feel for the first t8me that it wasn’t jus5 an actor but a real human being which captivated them. I think his death was foul play because no American star could touch him and they didn’t want the king of Hollywood to be an Italian. I’m truly amazed at this mans persona and ability like so many people.

Au contraire to people who were dismissive of this classy, well spoken gent. Valentino had a wonderful baritone. Even with the so-so audio recording quality, you hear him well enough to know he had just a slight accent. He sang in tune. And phrased just fine. I am convinced, had he lived... he'd have made the transition to talkies very well. Once he jettisoned that "Sheik" persona that had become such an albatross, both personally and professionally. He would have been terrific in those Warner gangster movies...alongside Eduardo Ciannelli...oh, just imagine!!

Valentino would have only been bigger with the advent of talkies. Difficult, as that is to imagine. Provided he didn't have a voice like a squeaky door hinge!! Which, by every account, he did not. Anyone that physically expressive would have been even more charismatic with sound to augment his chemistry with an audience. Only Elvis had a charisma of a similar magnitude to that of Valentino. And this is with a voice muted by silent pictures. INCREDIBLE!! In that respect, Valentino is the greatest star ever. Hands down.

    Saludos afectuosos.
    Sr.. Arturo Garcia Hernández.

The accent. That was something most Americans at the time didn't like. Very anti-immigrant. Pola Negri also had a heavy Polish accent. That's one of the reason's that everyone was so excited to hear Garbo talk, because the rumor was that she had a very thick Swedish accent. "Garbo talks!" was a big thing about "Anna Christie". "Gif me a viskey, straight". And later w/Ninotchka, she was known as so dour and taciturn, it was "Garbo LAUGHS!". She did one more film and then vanished because she felt she looked too old. There are a number of free downloads of original books about Rudy available from The Internet Archive; you join and then get digital library tickets and you can download some of their really old digitised books ... such as Valentino as I knew him; written in 1926 by S George Ullman, Rudy's manager and friend. It's a very interesting read.
From the same place you can also get Natasha Rambova's 1926 account of her marriage to Rudy from the same website. It is also a free download. Rudolph Valentino: a wife's memories of an icon.
You can also download Pola Negri's 'Memoirs of a Star' there, where she gives an account of how she met Valentino and their relationship. Amazon has digital downloads of Rudy's book, 'My Private Diary', which was ghost written by Herbert Howe in the 1920's ... the account of his early days is not quite factual though ... it was somewhat stage managed by the publicity machine of the day. You can also download Rudy's book of poetry called 'Daydreams' on the Internet Archive and his fitness book.
I would also recommend Affairs Valentino Special Edition by Evelyn Zumaya and the 'The True Rudolph Valentino' by Baltasar Fernandez Cue - who Valentino hired to write his biography some weeks before he died. I think those give an all round view of Valentino. It may also be worth buying the S George Ullman memoir published by Evelyn Zumaya which also contains George's later account of his friendship with Valentino ... Very interesting. Judging by his brother's voice and his nephew's voice, I feel that Rudy's voice would have been similar, but who really knows? It's really very difficult to tell for sure. Unfortunately, it will be a mystery that we will never be able to solve.
